  • What is Supercapacitor or Ultracapacitor? A supercapacitor is also called as supercap, ultracapacitor or Goldcap. It is a high-capacity capacitor with capacitance values much higher than other capacitors (but lower voltage limits) that bridge the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. The most commonly used electrode material for supercapacitors is carbon in various manifestations such as activated carbon, carbon fibre-cloth, carbide-derived carbon, carbon aerogel, graphite (graphene), graphane and carbon nanotubes (CNTs).
    Supercapacitors are used in applications requiring many rapid charge/discharge cycles rather than long term compact energy storage. Also, they are used in car booster packs and powerbanks.
    Currently, the supercapacitors are expensive than Lithium/ion batteries.

    when placing the capacitors in series, divide the CAPACITANCE !! YOU HAVE TO PLACE THEM IN PARALLEL TO INCREASE CAPACITANCE! AND TO THE AMPERAGE !!!

      That's correct. The amperage stays the same, you cut the capacitance value in half, but you double the stored energy, obviously, because you are charging the pair to twice the voltage. Hence the formula: E=1/2C*V^2. If you doubled the voltage in to just one of them, it would store 4 times the energy, but don't try it. It will likely destroy the cap. charging the 2 in series to the rated voltage of just one, you will get 1/2 the total energy, each capacitor storing 1/4 the energy each.

      Capacitors need to be charged like batteries. But, the good thing is, capacitors can be charged faster than batteries.

    Hi,
    I am from a computer science background and I don't have much knowledge on electrical and electronic things.
    I have drone which was built by assembling all the drone essential requirements.
    I have a battery which is 5200 mah, 11.1v 35C. I think I can continuously fly the drone for 10-15 minutes.
    Now I am thinking of another power source , which is tethered drone. I don’t mind drone tethering
    I have an idea in my mind to build the tethered drone. I am not sure whether it will work for me or not. Please help me on that.
    On the Ground I use AC power supply which is 230 volts and use some 14 - 22 gauge wire for 100 feet and at the drone end convert AC 230 volt to DC 12.5 volt. I mean some kind of adapter(AC to DC , 230 volts to 12 volts 1 amps) I will use. Now I am worried about is the amps which is required by the drone motor. I have a 180000uF 50V Electrolytic Capacitor which weighs about 700 grams. So when the capacitor gets charged from the source side and discharges at the other end.
    Will the discharge side able to run the drone motors? Please help me on this.
    And I also have some super capacitors, Can I use those capacitors.

      For tethered drone, you don't need any capacitors. You are going to power the drone from the ground. Your drone motors consume power over 30amps for 10 mins flight time. So, find a power pack from 230VAC to 12VDC 40A. You can find one without heavy transformer. You don't need capacitor, which will be extra weight for the drone. If you don't power the drone from the ground, you can consider about supercaps. But, you have to be very careful with 230VAC.

    hla soy de argentina y disculpa mi innorancia pregunto para remplazar la bateria de mi camioneta si yo compro 6 supercapacitor voy a tener 16.6 volt . estaria bien creo pero en amperajes cuanto seria y como la descarga de un capacitores muy rapida que hy que aserle para que no se descargu en el acto .yo tengo una bateria de plomo acido de 12 volt 100 amper .me podes desir como ago .yo creo que con capacitores me tiene que durar muchisimo mas grasias espero tu repuesta

      Hi Friend, for 6 supercaps in series, the total farad will be 62.5F. So, yoou need to assemble 6 parallel x (6 series) supercaps. So that, you will get 375 F(6x62.5F) altogether. It will be the minimun power to start your truck.

    Just wait until these capacitors gain the energy storage density of even a Lead Acid cell. Ooooo the cycle life!!!! The caveat, capacitors don't pay out their energy at a steady voltage. A constant current load has a perfectly straight discharge curve. To use it, you need at least a 4:1 voltage span, which means you may need a pulse width modulator to regulate the voltage available to the driven device. If you take a 16 volt capacitor and discharge it to 4 volts to supply a 3.7 volt device(cell phone), you will get 93.75% of the total stored energy. This example leaves only 6.25% in storage. If you stop discharging a 8 volts, you get 75%. usable, leaving behind 25%. I think this can easily be accommodated, considering a near 100% charge acceptance efficiency, and most of all, the ability to accept a complete charge in seconds! Given the cycle life, you'll buy a new device for the capacitor, not a new cap for the device. Please note: the energy stored in a capacitor is 1/2C*V^2 That means multiply the voltage it's charged to times itself. Then, multiply that number times 1/2 the capacitance value. That gives you the number of joules. (watt-seconds). When dealing with large values, divide the number of joules by 3600, to get watt-hours. (3600 seconds in an hour). That will allow you to compare capacitors to batteries, which are often rated in watt- hours.

    Just small notice: Your charging method of 2x 2.7V capacitors in series is not good. You may damage the capacitor. You need balanced charging. If one is full, not equal, for example 2V+3V.

    good try but it will not last longer as battery does. capacitor is only used for giving high amps for sec and then discharge

      Supercaps are a hybrid. Lots of current(but not as much as regular aluminum electrolytic caps), and high capacity(but not as high as a battery).
      They have limited use because in most cases, batteries or regular caps are better suited.

      Any supply current will do, it's just that more current will charge them faster. A 1 farad capacitor will gain 1 volt in 1 second at 1 amp. He was trying to get to 5 volts at 250 farads. a 1 amp supply will take 50 seconds. 2 amps, 25 seconds.......

      Hi Friend, supercapacitors are coastly than regular power banks for now. But, a good power bank's life time is around 1000 cycles. Whereas, a good supercapacitor's life time is over 1,000,000 cycles. Now you know which one is really cheap.

      Yes, but you may need more capacitors to meet the same power(based on currently available supercaps). for a long term usage, supercaps will be a good option.

      Hi, If you want to make a 12V 100A supercap car battery, you may need over 50,000 supercaps(2.7V). So, don't waste your money and time for now. Just wait for few years, you will be able to build your own 12V 100AH supercap car battery.

      It depend on the capacitance of the capacitor. For batteries, the charging voltage should be little bit higher than the rated voltage of a battery for quick charge. But for capacitors, we can not increase the charging voltage than the rated voltage of a capacitor. It may damage the capacitor. For example, for 2.7V capacitor, the maximum charging volt should be 2.699V and the charging current should be minimum 1000mAh to 2000mAh for better charging.

      1-faradcapacitor can hold 1 amp-second of electrons at 1 volt. From this formula, you can calculate the amp and also it depends on the load.

      Hi Slybunda, the electrolyte and electrodes of a supercapacitor are totally different than the conventional capacitors. This is why, supercapacitors are more smaller and lighter than typical capacitors.

      It totally depends on the load. If the load takes 0.5 A, it will last for few hours. If the load takes 50A, it will last for few seconds.

    I guess you don't know much about capacitors. You have two 500f connected in series making the total less than 500f. Just use one instead of connecting two. In order to double the capacitance you need to connect them in parallel.

      I guess you don't get my idea. If I want get 5V from supercap, how can I get 5V from one supercap. My purpose was not about farad. I know that it will be 250F when I connect two supercaps in series, but I can get 5.4V to operate my 5V devices.

    Not an accurate demo. Each capacitor has a different voltage.

      This demo was designed to illustrate different values, charged to the same voltage. If he was demonstrating the total energy each could store at rated voltage, You'd be right.

      @Enrique Trevino: You're right, but the voltage you mentioned means the (max) voltage that capacitor can stand. Here he charged all caps to the same 5V potentially, so only the capacitances matter. You may review the formula E=1/2CV^2 whereas V is the charged voltage.

At 5 volts, you've got 3125 joules total in both capacitors. 1562.5 per capacitor. even though the capacitors together could withstand 5.4 volts, 5 is close to the limits. It's actually an appropriate margin for tolerance. Two 500 farad caps in series = 250 farads. 5 volts times 5 volts equals 25. multiply that times 1/2 250 farads, that's 125 times 25=3645 joules. 1822.5 per cap. Notice: over 500 joules difference just raising the voltage from 5 volts to 5.4 volts! The energy goes up on the square of the increase in voltage.

      It depends on the load, if you draw power from supercap for few seconds, it would be over 40 - 50 Amps. But, if it is for few minutes, it would be 1 - 2 Amps. So, we can't determine the fixed Ampere rate without load's information.

    500F黑色超級電容充飽2.7V不到1小時自放電為2V左右,過一天 只剩下1.5v左右在過兩天0V是個重大缺點!!i

      請問兩顆超級電容串聯, 是否成了5.4V 250F的組合, 那麼是否使用一般2A手機的充電頭就可充電, 使用時的輸出電流是否會依照設備的需求穩定輸出呢?

      @@TheObeiguon兩超串聯容量相減,但耐压增加一倍 2.7+2.7=5.4V,容量500除2=250F。一般手機充1A太小不適合會先燒機。充超容設備至少至少要5~10A以上100A以下還要加一個電壓表來 監視。
