You give Southgate too much credit. You demand that he isn't a bad coach for having them play with such tight margins and slow, sure approach, but then say that with their talent pool, he shouldn't be playing that way. So he isn't using his team correctly, and is a bad manager. Southgate has one of best teams in the world and plays like he has a group of players from the championship against Manchester City.

As a newer england fan who only really started paying attention to football as a whole in 2018 during the world cup I have alot of patience for southgate and think there are a lot of mitigating factors that soften the surface level severity of this defeat even if they dont excuse it but can also concede that it is objectively very funny that a defeat in this particular feature has happened around the euros again

trust me, as an australian who watches australia vs england in a lot of sports. there is an english state of mind that always lets them down. there is something deep within the DNA that leads to them always lose. Small detail : Southgate's 2018 World Cup run only happened because Belgium let them have the easy half of the knockout table. Literally. Probably still the reason why people seem to think he's actually a somewhat decent manager. If we let them have Brasil, we could have have a good laugh instead of the illusion England can win something. They never will win anything under Southgate. Southgate also famously missed a pen in the 96 shootout loss to Germany. Pizza Hut even got Southgate to do a TV commercial which the punchline is him missing.
Southgates brand historically has been based on failure. We'll look back on this England team era and wondered what they coukd have won with a half decent manager. Southgate is too one dimensional tactically, has no flexibility and struggles against teams that dont play how England expect them to.

Plus the idea that Southgate is a good manager is funamentally flawed when you look at who they beat in previous tournaments. The only big team he's beaten in a tournament was a washed Germany. He's got lucky draws and lost to the teams ranked above him. Plus this idea that JL and Dele were bad players, just because of their current personal issues is wrong. Those players in those years were scoring in cup finals and putting up massive numbers in the league. Southgate is a failed Championship manager who relegated the only teams he's managed (including England).
We probably shouldn't be losing that game, but it was a friendly where Iceland were setup really well for the fixture and England players are just trying not to get injured.

As an England fan, I'm really not concerned about this result, you could tell England were playing at a very low intensity presumably trying to avoid injuries and changed pretty much the whole team through the course of the game. If we win the first game in the group everyone will forget all about this game.

Southgate's only positive is the charmed life he leads in pot draws. 15% win rate against top 10 nations is a failure covered up by the fact he's barely had to play any. The world cup semi final performance the best teams they played were Croatia and Belgium twice. They lost all 3.
Players were clearly either complacent, or trying to avoid an unnecessary injury a week before the Euros. You could tell they weren't playing anywhere near 100% understandably.And Kane missed an open net. There's not really anything to worry about from that loss.

Everything you say about the culture is true but it goes back way before the Southgate era. This is the first generation of English players that have a similar level of technical ability to those of top international teams, changing the cultural mindset of a nation can take some time. I suspect this will be Southgate's last tournament regardless of the outcome, the choice of next manager becomes very important so we don't slip back into the doldrums we were in pre 2018. It is easy to forget when you get anomalous results like this just how much better England are now than they were.

The problem with Southgate is that he's a very tactically cautious and defensive coach, that's our weakest part of the team currently. It's a team made for a big Ange approach, cross our fingers and hope we score more than the opposition but have fun riding the rollercoaster of the game.

I've been anti-Southgate since the summer of 2018 when I was screaming at my TV for him to switch to a back four in the second half against Croatia; they were constantly getting in behind Kyle Walker and Dele Alli was a passenger in midfield. For everyone praising Southgate for the results in 2018 and 2021, I firmly believe a more competent manager would have easily gone one step further in both tournaments.
I’m so disappointed in England. So disappointed I bet you that they get out R16, and they will lose ANOTHER friendly to Iceland AWAY in the next 4 years.
