Let's be honest though. Something that gets ignored about is that Lewa, had there been no complete stop to football for 2-3 months (I think it was 3) would have missed the two follow games (Barca?) and probably the first leg of the semi-final had Bayern somehow gotten through to it.
People don't remember he broke his tibula and was to be out for 4-6 weeks. He ended up out for 8 weeks total, albeit extra rest time given to fully recovered probably accounted for.
Also, the UCL got weird AF. The quarter finals onwards all took place in Portugal and the semi-final vs. Lyon was one game winner takes all.
I am not saying an astride but it should be noted the context behind it all.

Liverpool in the 20/21 season were all over the place. Title winning form in the first half of the season aside from the Villa 7-2. Relegation form in January and February alongside 6 back to back loses at Anfield because we didn't have any senior centre backs along with injuries in midfield and then title winning form in April and May which somehow resulted in a 3rd place finish, courtesy of Alissons injury time header against West Brom

I still vividly remember rival fans losing all hope when we (Liverpool) beat Spurs at the death just before or after Christmas, I think, to take the lead in the league.
And then we went away to Palace and smashed them 7-0.
Plenty of rival fans online and irl had conceded Liverpool winning the league. Probably also under obvious assumption we'd have one or two CBs signed by the first week in January. Tbf, I thought similar about such signings.
By the end of January, Man U fans had the taken top spot and their fans were so giddy, but City just ran them down.
We really should have gone B2B winners.

Lockdown football was crazy to say the least. Liverpool finally ended their 3 decade wait for the Premier League title only to celebrate it with no fans allowed. Manchester United were winning and scoring goals for fun. Manchester City won the Premier League title comfortably and they were 8th at the halfway point mind you. Chelsea won the Champions League. Lingard was balling for West Ham, Arsenal fan TV was peak especially when Arsenal were in the mud, Barcelona got smashed by Bayern Munich 8-2, Atletico Madrid almost threw away the La Liga title despite having a 20 point lead, Villarreal wins their only silverware by winning the Europa League title and they were 7th and qualified for the inauguration Conference League but qualified for the Champions League.
Lockdown football was chaotic with unbelievable score lines and crazy moments. For me as a Manchester United fan it was disappointing we never really tried to push for the Premier League title but for Arsenal fans it was a moment to forget.

Not only that 8:2 against Barca, the whole damn CL run from Bayern that year was nothing short of spectacular. They even conceded a lot of goals in the Bundesliga that year but their attack was so relentless it didn't even remotely matter. Maybe the early Bundesliga start after lockdown did in fact help. Kimmich/Goretzka in 2020 looked like someone with X-Ray vision playing next to the incredible Hulk lol.
The weirdest thing about this is how they seemingly fell of a cliff as a duo and didn't really complement each other on the pitch after 2020. They still played a long time in that combination for Bayern and unfortunately my country Germany and the latter one is still haunting me to this very day lol.

    You missed these:
1.Barcelona 2-8 Bayern Munich: Probably one of the most shocking results during the lockdown football. That was happened in the Champions League quarterfinals, and it was a single-legged format (Barcelona had previously got battered 0-7 by Bayern Munich back in 2013, but it was after two legs of semifinal). Since then, the two teams had faced each other THREE times, including the upcoming encounter at Barcelona's ground under the new Champions League format this season! Bayern's aggregate against Barcelona was so wild since that infamous quarterfinal game 4 years ago: 19-2.
2.Brighton vs Arsenal: The game was notorious for Bernd Leno's horrific injury that really sidelined him for a long period. Leno's replacement, Emiliano Martinez, quickly became the new star, making some brilliant goalkeeping performances that saved Arsenal's season with the FA Cup victory. He was later moved to Aston Villa and continued his consistency as a main goalkeeper. Dibu eventually became Argentina's main goalkeeper and the team went on to 3 major trophies (Copa America 2021, 2022 World Cup, Copa America 2024) with him.
3.Palmeiras winning 2 Libertadores titles in just a single year (2021). The 2020 season was concluded in January 2021 due to the pandemic, with the 2021 Final being held just only 10 months later after the previous season's final. This might be the rarest feat in the world football. Athletic Bilbao from Spain also played 2 Copa del Rey Finals within just 14 days in April 2021, since the 2020 Final was moved a year later due to the pandemic.
And more importantly, the lockdown football also saw the end of Diego Maradona. He died on November 25, 2020.

I’ll tell you what’s bonkers, Sheffield United finishing 9th in the 19/20 season. They had just got promoted from the championship after finishing 2nd. During lockdown they beat Spurs 3-1 and Chelsea 3-0 at home, also there was the 0-0 v Villa where goal line technology failed to pick up on a goal which ended up keeping Villa up and relegating Bournemouth. Before lockdown they had only conceded 3 goals against Liverpool and City separately, plus drawing against United 3-3. During the season they also almost did the double over Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal (drawing all 3 away games), the most they conceded in one games was 3 (which happened 4 times) and kept the joint 3rd most clean sheets with 13 (I’ll also mention BURNLEY KEPT THE JOINT 2ND MOST CLEAN SHEETS WITH 15 ALONGSIDE CHAMPIONS LIVERPOOL). I’ll end this with big up Chris Wilder.

Lockdown for me was the resurgence of forgotten players:
    1. Kelechi Iheanacho. Up to this point was a bright young talent in City’s academy who had made the move to a lesser but still relevant team in Leicester. Because of an injury to vardy during the 20/21 city he got his moment and took it. Scored 14 goals I believe that season and helped them nearly finish 4th.
    2. Ilkay Gundogan. This period really started his legendary status at City. Scored something like 12 goals for city this season when they didn’t have a striker and helped them win the title after being 8th at mid season.
    3. Jesse Lingard. We all know that one.
    4. Dominic Calvert Lewin and James at Everton.
The list could go on as well. What an interesting season to have witnessed

What I really liked about lock down football is that atleast in Bundesliga can’t speak on leagues that used fake fans lol, you could hear the communication between the players and it really benefited tactical teams since it was much easier to communicate

I loved the feeling that no fans are in the stadium, but the 3 points are just as important, and the fans are all watching on the tv. It made me feel that the others teams aren't taking it serious and we can get an advantage. It doesn't feel big when you win, because no fans are in the stadium, but you know at the end of the season, everyone will realize how much it all means. Love that stealth when dealing with rival fans of my club.

Lockdown Man Utd is almost as crazy as Arsenal.
They were awarded 14 penalties in the 2019/20 season, a PL record. Almost every match was guaranteed to be a Bruno Fernandes Penalty.
Anthony Martial scored 17 goals and 6 assists in 32 games that same season. He never recovered after that.

The reason we might look at lockdown football fondly was just because how different and crazy the experience was, personally I absolutely loved hearing how the teams communicated throughout the game, the raw shouting, instructions, unfiltered sledging between players (traore being a brick shithouse) was very enjoyable, seeing how english teams communicated vs german teams etc was super cool.

The last time Everton were an above average team.

People can say what they want about Liverpool lifting the trophy in an empty stadium, but as a fan who hadn’t been outside in months it was such an incredible moment and every bit as sweet as it would’ve been had I been there. Something about the players being able to enjoy their achievement alone surrounded by nothing except their team was kinda beautiful, it was ethereal in a good way.

People going on Neymar instagram asking him to go back to his old mohawk haircut, people putting 2011 Neymar as their profile pictures, and that final had the biggest audience in the history of any paid televison channel here. At thtat same year we also had São Paulo and Inter both bottling the league in a phenomenal way, and Palmeiras x Santos in the Libertadores final, which might have been the worst final in the history of football.

I do remember that CL final though. I mean, I don’t remember much actual plays anyway for this long but I know it was a 1-0 Bayern win vs PSG with Kingsley Coman scoring a 57th minute goal. A cut inside I think it was? Looking it up it was actually the 59th minute and a header. Close enough. Lewa really should have gotten his Ballon d Or that year. And yeah, people downplaying Liverpool s title are ridiculous.
Now that I think about it, some weird things happened in Romania too. They stopped the league just like everywhere else in March, restarted in June but it was still not going to be finished by the 3rd of August, UEFA s deadline for European participants. At this point, the title fight was between two teams, CFR Cluj being 2 points ahead with one match played more than CSU Craiova, them being scheduled to play anyway so that match was ruled a straight up final for the title with extra time and penalties if necessary. Craiova took the lead in the 10th minute. Many of us thought they would save us from the 3rd CFR title in a row. They didn’t, it was the 3rd of 5 CFR titles in a row. Then they ruled the rest of the table standing, which worked fine for the championship round (Astra facking Googoo was 3rd but they couldn’t get a UEFA licence so no participation and then it was Botosani and FCSB that had earned the right to participate via winning the Cup anyway) but was a massive issue in the relegation round, where a sickness-struck Dinamo had only played 9 matches (they were supposed to play 14 and everyone else had between 12-14 matches) and was pretty bad in those 9 leaving them second from bottom in 13th. Do you relegate them or not? The Romanian Federation said no, expanding the league to 16 teams instead and only making the last place team play a relegation playoff (they won). Dinamo fans will tell you they would have rescued themselves anyway had the matches been played. I as a FCSB fan said “maybe but we will never know, you guys were damn bad that year” and still teased them for it. Until they got relegated anyway two seasons later in a season where Dinamo player Gabi Torje promised their fans they will be in the championship round (top 6 teams) after a 6-0 loss to us, now it doesn’t really matter too much lol. Oh and also two of the clubs that took part in the championship round in the stopped season (Astra and Gaz Metan Medias) have since gone bankrupt but that s just average Romanian football activity, nothing to do with the pandemic per say
