Hey, found your channel today and will definitely give it a try! But maybe you can help to sort some confusion we have regarding dance styles and names.. After watching the German TV show "Kudamm 56" my girlfriend and I got interested in Rock'n'Roll Style dances. Sadly that was during Corona so the only option was to try with UA-cam (dance studios were closed). So we started with some videos of "Rock'n'Roll dance" which was more jumping than dancing and later we found out it's an acrobatic focused variation popular in Europe contests (not what we were looking for). So after some more searching we found a style using a 6 count step (2 triple steps and a rock step). And stayed with that one. However, we found very different names for dances that look similar (Jive, Boogie Woogie, Rock'n'Roll dance, East Coast Swing). Now I found your videos which look great for dancing but also look very different to everything we found so far.. Can you shed some light on why there are so many different names and styles seemingly being used interchangeably. Also happy to share a link to a video scene of what we're looking for if you don't know the TV show (don't know if it's known beyond Germany). Hey, no worries. Here we go; it all started with 1920's Lindy Hop, named after a news headline of Charles Lindburgh hops over the ocean. Lindy Hop is a very 'kicky' dance, that has quite a following and they have their own dance events and style of music. Check out the famous dance scene in the film Hellzapoppin; very acrobatic. Jitterbug; Swing Jive etc evolved from Lindy Hop, and their music of choice was swing; boogie woogie; that big band sound. The big change happened in the late 1950's when teenagers were jiving to R&B which was evolving into rock 'n' roll so that the 'white' kids could get involved. Elvis big selling point was that he was a white man that sounded black. One of the main recreational pastimes for the teenagers and young people was dancing at ballrooms and participating in jive competitions at these events. Problem was, the ballroom set (the organisation that promoted and taught dances like Foxtrot; Tango; Waltz) were the people that judged these jive competitions. So, what they did was, create a set of rules and footwork so that they could judge the jive competitions. Imagine young people nowadays who love to street dance, having to conform their moves to suit the rules of a dance competition. You'd get two very different dance styles; one is free-flowing with no rules and the other is a 'clipped' version. For example; Argentinian Tango is a beautiful, passionate dance. Ballroom Tango isn't. THAT's the difference! What became known as Rockabilly Jive / Rock 'n' Roll Jive was the jive dance that the young people enjoyed to do away from the ballroom jive competitions with it's restrictions to the moves and introduced footwork that wasn't necessary. Ballroom Jive is the 'umbrella' name for all the dances that we now know as Ballroom Jive; Ceroc; French Jive; etc They focus a lot on footwork which isn't necessary. For those of us that don't want to be part of this ballroom jive footwork nonsense, we focus on the original jive moves and more, and we call it Rockabilly Jive or Rock 'n' Roll Jive. To confuse it even more, you can search 'Rockabilly Jive' and you'll find a load of modern jive videos (seems prevalent in Canada) dancing to modern music! So, don't worry about your feet; relax with your partner and enjoy dancing to R&B; Rockabilly and Rock 'n' Roll music. Leave the modern jivers to dance to slower modern music ;-)
