I loved minidiscs , but I heard they didn't make money because you could record over the the same minidisc over and over again damn near forever with no sound degradation.
Well. I got my R4 about an hour ago. I got through about 45 seconds of the first song before it died. This is my first Hiby device and thus far the experience is not great. It locked up while streaming from roon. I held down the power button for about 20 seconds and the locked up screen finally went dark. Now the device is basically dead with a blue light at the top. No combination of buttons does anything. The really cool part is that the device is so new there is nothing on the website for it at all. Outside of a way to buy it .

I stream but I still like a DAP because the dac and amp are better than the best dongles, dongles are irritating AF, texts and notifications don't interrupt the music, you don't drain the phone battery, and you can use it as a source on a desktop setup.

It was an absurd amount of money in a time that I definitely couldn't afford it. I used it until it broke. :) Didn't jump back in until around 2009 and went nuts on ebay. Glad I did because most of it is broken or far too expensive.
I just bought the Evangelion this morning. Super big fan of the anime so I can't wait for it to get here. So excited for it. The color is based on the type of audio file you are playing.
Soooooo, I know nothing about the technical aspects of this contraption, so here are some questions: Can it be connected to my car infotainment system, which has an auxiliary jack? I prefer a wired connection over Bluetooth. Can it be connected to my Yamaha A-S501 Integrated Amp so I can hear lossless music through my most beloved SVS Prime 6.5 Bookshelf speakers? Will it efficiently drive my Grado SR125 Prestige headphones? I heard it runs hot. Does it run hot? Does it support gapless playback? Thanks in advance.
I just received mine today. The EVA edition. And I've been the entire afternoon trying it, installing apps and things. I'm new in the hobby so for me all of this is new 😊 The only thing that is happening to me is that as soon as I plug any IEM or a pair of Sennheiser headphones I have, the volume turns down to 50 and I can't volume up more than that. Anyone knows why or had the same issue? Thanks in advance
Don't make a lot of sense to be fair, I'm using it with tidal installed, downloading albums at the highest quality and playing them back offline at better quality than any phone could manager
@@larrymtz83 If you're connecting a pair of IEM then it's a no brainier, if using Bluetooth it depends on your earbuds, it can send higher quality than what any Bluetooth buds out there support right now so will do 24bit 192khz easy, I love the bit perfect audio system wide, to me the value is incredible
The price is unbelievable. You can buy this instead of any dongle to be honest as you have everything, streaming, power, battery, sound tuning, class a amp. You can abuse it, so cheap. Hard to believe

My problem is that there's a decent amount of music that I own on cd's and have ripped to my PC that I can't get through streaming services so I've been looking at daps and there's just so many that it's really confusing. Especially with how the prices can be really all over the place. I'll probably get this one at some point if it's really as good as everyone is saying. Z isn't the first person saying this is the best dap for the price by a long shot
I am so surprised that there has not been some sort of ROM based physical media format at about half the size of a cassette. Heck, manufacturers are starting to guarantee flash chips for over a decade of active write use.

It gets super hot. Depending on what you are doing. I was downloading songs from Spotify and listening line out and I could have cooked a steak on it. Regular use it just gets warm. Incredible sound and fast software are the best elements.
It is a class a amplifier, which means it baseline loses like 75% of the electricity run into the amp to heat loss. Class a amps sound great, but they eat battery put off heat and there is a reason this thing is chonky cause class a amps are usually kinda bigger than this to my knowledge.

It would sometimes refuse to turn on and the only way i managed to make it work is to plug it in to wake it up and then try the power button. That worked a couple times. Then one day it did it again but instead of starting, it just got stuck in a boot loop. Screen would turn on and off forever. Went back home from work and it was dead. No screen, no lights, nothing. Had to send it back for warranty. Which sucks btw because they don't cover shipping for repairs at all. Only the return. 75$ in shipping down the drain and now i'm just waiting for news. Hopefully they don't screw me over.
@cadenlambert7401 They eventually sent me a new one. This one works, lasts a lot longer and doesn't get nearly as hot. BUT. It feels slower and it has horrible latency compared to the first one in dac mode. Which is half the reason I wanted this thing. Messaged them again about this and got nothing in return. Maybe just a firmware issue but who knows. They won't answer back.
I am getting this dap. I do have a pretty good library of music files but I do stream a lot of music and honestly it's more because I don't really love the awkwardness of a dongle dac and I've just found that my collection of 100 to 400 dollar iems and headphones just kick the shit out of my buds 2 pro. I like the idea of a device just for music, just like I have a kindle paperwhite just for reading books. I tend to gravitate to for purpose devices over all in one devices that need crutches to do the special things.
I bought the black version on Amazon on sale for $211, the day I bought it my EVA limited edition shipped from China 😅. So now I'll have 2 smh. I'll be gifting the black r4 to my brother or wife. But it was too good of a deal to pass up. Also it was warm for the first use and spazzing out a little and froze. I had to hold the power button and volume button to reboot it. After that it no longer gets warm to the touch, no matter what I'm driving, and the battery life is stupid good. Also it's smooth, not as smooth as my flag ship pixel phone, but not janky at all. The extra ram on the limited edition should polish it up that last little bit, so I expected it will be as smooth as my phone. I use it with Amazon music HD and download all the track is the best flac quality available for offline playback. Works great!!!
I like the glow in the dark green color of the hiby r04 since the light green always reminds me glow in the dark green and if there was purple version that zeos mentions of the hiby r04 reminds me of saints row video game series since they use a lot purple in there games. The purple that I like is the transparent gameboy color and nintendo 64 since they were nostalgic but are known for being classic video games.
Price seems right to me! Miss having a dedicated DAP. Love the Cyberpunk looks. Always like your reviews so many others say "uh" and "um" way too much, and look at you with a blank face while they steal bits of your soul with their boredom. Sucks you have to wait to drop an F-bomb.
My wife just bought me a Hiby R3 ii about 2 weeks ago for my 5 month sober celebration and kinda wishing she would've waited and got the R4... I can't be mad but I will eventually get one. I love the style! Great review Z!

This is going to be my 1st DAP and a dive into HiFi in general, not just on-the-go stuff. What's the best way to start a HiFi library to then transfer onto the DAP? Would HDTracks alone suffice and be at reasonable cost per song/album vs something cheaper?
I feel like DAPs are for us freaks who have collected and curated our own music libraries for years, not sure I'd recommend buying one if you don't already have your own library. And starting one during the age of streaming feels somewhat pointless, you're better off getting a Tidal subscription, they've stopped separating their tiers by sound quality and you're now getting the highest quality possible for whatever tier you choose (plus, out of all the streaming platforms, I think Tidal pays the artists the most per stream). So, get a BTR15 or something similar and plug it into your phone and you're done.
Your voice sounds like that common AI voice people are using. That means it's a good voice, but that also means that if you make shorts people might think you used AI voice 😅 love the video though

can someone tell me why would I buy this over the sony nwa306? I got it for 300$ and it's small and lighter (I want to use this for the gym and running). If the r4 is too big or heavy which one should I pick?
Took me couple weeks extra to get mine, because apparently they were having supply chain issues with the green and orange ones..had i known id have just ordered a silver one...now, that I have it...REALLY REALLY disappointed...apparently, their supply chain issues manifested into quality control issues in a rush to get these out...mine sounds ok, as long as I'm sitting at my desk listening with wired cans...but. I tried using it with Bluetooth headphones while taking long walks around the park and about every ten or twelve steps it stops and makes scratchy sounds similar to what wired phones make if you have a broken wire or bad solder connection...all that fancy hardware ain't worth much, if it's not connected properly...tried it with two different sets of phones (Skokie bone conducting and Skull Candy Crusher Evos) on three different walks. .same effect...portable audio player that's not exactly, PORTABLE...They, also, dropped the ball on their multi-function switch that is supposed to be able to serve as a lock switch...only locks the buttons...not the touch screen...so, tried putting it in a case on a shoulder hostel, but the inside of the case kept activating the touch screen and reeking havoc...
I'm sure you get tired of hearing this but could you look into the Wiim amp? It's essentially the wiim streamer with an amp for $300. Wondering if it's better than buying a separate amp like the A07 Max and then a wiim streamer.
Yeah: most resource-light open OS that doesn't (always) restrict what apps you can install on it. You can even run one without a Play store and just use one of the open-source stores like Droid-ify or F-Droid (though for DAPs it might not be as easy to uninstall GPlay as for phones).
Mostly because it's hard to get companies like Spotify or tidal to code their stuff to fit your proprietary os on your device. Also android OS is literally free, which means you don't have to code an OS just a custom overlay to be unique. I don't know if you have ever tried to build a Linux computer from a kernel but it's like that, except you also have to code a kernel if you wanna proprietary os. It's kinda somthing that would end up costing more to produce than the physical devices.

The R8 II is a veritable R-2R desktop setup, in your pocket! Albeit a heavy one. You could literally kill someone with! The RS8/CR08 combo takes it up a couple of people. Figuratively speaking.
Is the CR08 compatible with other DAPs or just the RS8? I ask because the RS8 is nearly 5 & a half grand here in Australia, whereas the R8 II is "only" about 3 & a half comparatively. If the R8 II is indeed "the best sounding THING" (DAC/amp) Z has ever heard in headphone hifi then I'm way more inclined to save up a little extra for that & a CR08 vs the giant brick of an XDuoo XD05 Pro with Sparkos SS3602 opamps and their upcoming R2R DAC card, using my phone as source, that I'm currently saving my pennies for. Even with the XD05 Pro coming in at less than half the cost of the R8 II. Edit: I just Googled it... The CR08 is compatible with other DAPs like the R8 II, although it sticks out a bit, whereas the RS8 sits perfectly in the docking position. It was primarily made for the RS8. I'll wait for the review of the R8 II and if it's as good as Z said it is here and the R8 II's internal battery can be bypassed when docked to the CR08, I'm getting them instead of an XD05 Pro.
Also don't sleep on Montreal style bagels, they are boiled in honey water so there is a hint of sweetness which could have maybe been an even better analogy for this dap than NY bagels (I live in Brooklyn so not MTL biased lol)
Still don't understand why they use a 1/4 inch jacks and make these things as thick as a massive brick. Surely can just use an 1/8 inch jack and optimise the battery better.

Viva la minidiscs! Still love all of mine. I just bought a MD player for my Onkyo mini component stack. It can't get here from Japan soon enough!

I feel like DAPs are for us freaks who have collected and curated our own music libraries for years, not sure I'd recommend buying one if you don't already have your own library. And starting one during the age of streaming feels somewhat pointless, you're better off getting a Tidal subscription, they've stopped separating their tiers by sound quality and you're now getting the highest quality possible for whatever tier you choose (plus, out of all the streaming platforms, I think Tidal pays the artists the most per stream). So, get a BTR15 or something similar and plug it into your phone and you're done.

I find the style of this player MEH but black is too anonymous. I've had my last smartphone for around 3 years and i got hella bored with it even tho it still worked flawlessly, and bought a new one for that reason

Took me couple weeks extra to get mine, because apparently they were having supply chain issues with the green and orange ones..had i known id have just ordered a silver one...now, that I have it...REALLY REALLY disappointed...apparently, their supply chain issues manifested into quality control issues in a rush to get these out...mine sounds ok, as long as I'm sitting at my desk listening with wired cans...but. I tried using it with Bluetooth headphones while taking long walks around the park and about every ten or twelve steps it stops and makes scratchy sounds similar to what wired phones make if you have a broken wire or bad solder connection...all that fancy hardware ain't worth much, if it's not connected properly...tried it with two different sets of phones (Skokie bone conducting and Skull Candy Crusher Evos) on three different walks.
.same effect...portable audio player that's not exactly, PORTABLE...They, also, dropped the ball on their multi-function switch that is supposed to be able to serve as a lock switch...only locks the buttons...not the touch screen...so, tried putting it in a case on a shoulder hostel, but the inside of the case kept activating the touch screen and reeking havoc...

Yeah: most resource-light open OS that doesn't (always) restrict what apps you can install on it. You can even run one without a Play store and just use one of the open-source stores like Droid-ify or F-Droid (though for DAPs it might not be as easy to uninstall GPlay as for phones).

Mostly because it's hard to get companies like Spotify or tidal to code their stuff to fit your proprietary os on your device. Also android OS is literally free, which means you don't have to code an OS just a custom overlay to be unique. I don't know if you have ever tried to build a Linux computer from a kernel but it's like that, except you also have to code a kernel if you wanna proprietary os. It's kinda somthing that would end up costing more to produce than the physical devices.

The R8 II is a veritable R-2R desktop setup, in your pocket! Albeit a heavy one. You could literally kill someone with! The RS8/CR08 combo takes it up a couple of people. Figuratively speaking.
Is the CR08 compatible with other DAPs or just the RS8? I ask because the RS8 is nearly 5 & a half grand here in Australia, whereas the R8 II is "only" about 3 & a half comparatively. If the R8 II is indeed "the best sounding THING" (DAC/amp) Z has ever heard in headphone hifi then I'm way more inclined to save up a little extra for that & a CR08 vs the giant brick of an XDuoo XD05 Pro with Sparkos SS3602 opamps and their upcoming R2R DAC card, using my phone as source, that I'm currently saving my pennies for. Even with the XD05 Pro coming in at less than half the cost of the R8 II.
Edit: I just Googled it... The CR08 is compatible with other DAPs like the R8 II, although it sticks out a bit, whereas the RS8 sits perfectly in the docking position. It was primarily made for the RS8. I'll wait for the review of the R8 II and if it's as good as Z said it is here and the R8 II's internal battery can be bypassed when docked to the CR08, I'm getting them instead of an XD05 Pro.

Wow makes me want this over my R6 III, the specs are nearly identical. Somehow this has more dac chips and power but 1g less ram.
Also don't sleep on Montreal style bagels, they are boiled in honey water so there is a hint of sweetness which could have maybe been an even better analogy for this dap than NY bagels (I live in Brooklyn so not MTL biased lol)
R6 is better. I'm betting they will make a r6 IIII and you will want that one more than this
