The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

What an incredible performance! Thank you for posting Joni singing her first and biggest hit! She really had an ethereal beautiful singing voice and this song is a great showcase for her talent. "Why Don't You Believe Me?" charted at #1 in Billboard, and this was Joni's first appearance on the Sullivan show. Joni was my grandfather's favorite female singer and I only wish he could have seen this, so I'm sure it would have been one of his most loved videos. He told me many times how he heard this song on the radio in the early '50's and fell in love with her voice.
"Why Don't You Believe Me?" was written by Lew Douglas, King Laney & Roy Rodde.
This is a wonderful holiday treat! Ms. James was so great.
Thanks for the sharing Joni James singing on Ed's Show almost 72 years ago!

Born Giovanna Carmella Babbo
in Chicago in 1930, she passed away from natural causes at age 91 in 2022.
This song was her first recording, released in 1952. Her career was relatively short, only 13 years. Her last release was in 1965, a re-release of her 1958 hit: "There Goes My Heart." She made over 700 recordings, which cumulatively sold for over 100 million dollars.
What a pure, sweet and sensuous voice she possessed!
Unfortunately, she retired prematurely to take care of her
chronically sick
husband. She put her career on hold until her husband passed away at age 94 in 1986. Her sacrifice was our loss.😢
Hopefully both she and her husband are presently 🙏🌠"at the source of all light."🌠🙏
👍
Trivia tidbit: Ending Joni's 4 week run at the top was "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by Jimmy Boyd, arguably youngest ever to be no.1.
That girdle looks super tight!! Women were forced to wear horrible clothes!!
forced ?
@@fft2020 Of course!! Forced!!
Back in the years women had much smaller waist sizes! Mine was only 18 inches!
@ruthboykin9873 Wrong. We were all the same size as today. Today we aren't forced into clothing that sucks our breath out. Much more freedom! Today is a billion times better.
Zzzzzz
Can you do better?
@ 100%!
I had the pleasure of seeing Joni James many years ago in New Orleans at the Blue Room. I thoroughly enjoy the show. She sang beautifully
@@tinkertot1000 I was there too!
Great voice
