On Android 8.0, to remove the battery notification, go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Notifications > App notifications, then click the hamburger menu and click 'show system'. Scroll down until you find 'Android System', then click it. Scroll down until you find 'Apps consuming battery'. Flip the switch to off.
My P10 runs super smooth with Nova Launcher on emui 5.1 and you don't swipe away those powersaving notifications, you answer the question if the phone should close the app regularily or not and then it's gone.
I feel that your last part of the review killed how good this phone is and although I do agree with the points you picked up on me personally I have switched from a Samsung Galaxy S8 and my only big miss from the S8 is the expandable storage apart from that I find the camera on the Mate 10 Pro a lot better than the S8 and the battery life well I feel that every phone manufacturer should be putting a 4000mah battery in all there flagships.
About EMUI. I'm on EMUI 5.0.1 on the honor 8 and I have used NOVA Launcher for a year now without any issues, maybe it's a problem of the new version though. As for the battery usage notification, it can be disabled in the settings of the power panel (top right corner), and I think that the fact that the notifications can't be expanded with a swipe is a bug; it used to be like that on the honor 8 too, but then they fixed it. I am not a EMUI fan at all, if I could choose i would use Android stock, but i wanted to point out these things because overall EMUI is not that bad, the responsiveness, in particular, has even improved over a year of use.
I've had this phone for a couple of days. And comming from Apple I very happy with it. Yestarday I spent 6 hours listening to music and it was still at 70%. My 5s would need a full charge after that.
Sahid. I wouldn't call him UNDERRATED and certainly not Overrated! Anyone into tech on UA-cam knows about Micheal Fisher and is certainly one of the best reviewers and 'IMO' the best story teller on UA-cam with the way he incorporates a Cinema like platform to tell a story of each device or topic that is put out from him! I agree with you, I just think you UNDERSTATED his position in the tech community! Cheers man
While english is not my 1st language I can clearly understand everything you say in your videos ..you deserve more recognition especially for the European viewers. Keep up the good work!
The "running in background" notification seems to be a stock Android problem as I'm also seeing it on my Xperia XZ. There's an app in Google Play that hides that notification - I know it's a workaround but at least it works.
I didn't experience what you detailed here in the beginning. On day two, I loaded Nova Launcher and for two months now, I have not had 1 single hiccup or crash. Not 1. I've owned the Note8 and S8, and I just hate those curved screens. IMHO, the Mate 10 PRO is the best phone I've used, minus the EMUI. Thank you.
my camera messed up months ago on my mate 9. still my daily driver because of battery life 😍 no other phone comes close on battery performance & it has a headphone jack
This phone deserves to be in the 800$ range, a phone with 4000mah battery with luxury features is always my choice .. Buying it instead of s8+ next week
By the way, there is Auto HDR in the camera app. It automatically activates whenever you're shooting scenes with high contrast, it's just you cannot see the option nor disable it manually.
For Audible books, get ANYTHING by Lee Child. I just finished Tripwire. Before that, "Running Blind". You'll find yourself sitting in the car still listening long after you've pulled into the garage. Best stuff ever. Thanks for the video Michael. Be blessed.
There are only handful of tech youtubers, whose videos I find very engrossing.. Mr Mobile is on top of my list. Hope to see more zeros added in our subscriber family ✌🏻
Every single one of your reviews is an absolute joy to watch. Plus, you're not just very charismatic, but you also give a very clear impression of honesty and objectivity. Big thumbs up once again! Although I have to note that I disagree with you (here & in the past as well) regarding how annoying the OS of Huawei is. You've obviously got some valid points, but according to my own experience with it, it's not as obnoxious as you describe at all, and the annoyances quicky turn out to be minor - not major as you may have thought in the beginning...
Nice ... Great video... I really like my Mate 9 that I've had for almost a year but the problem here in the US is Huawei has zero support.... I haven't received any update in ten months since LAST APRIL no security, no bug fix no emui, NOTHING.. If they want part of the market share in the u.s. maybe they should support the phones they've released here... Huawei makes pretty good Hardware but in the US the support is non-existent after the first month... I would think twice before getting me mate 10 Pro.
None of the options as alternatives you mention come remotely close in battery life. My favorite phone over the past year has been the Mate 9 and one of my favorite features is the battery life. It smokes the Note 8 and iPhones my co-workers have when it comes to battery life and even after a year it's still snappy and buttery smooth. I'd pick it over a pixel 2 or note 8 any day...
I have the mate 10 - after having a LGG6, S8, Iphone 8 this year and I have to say it rocks. Battery life, screen, speed, call quality for a non-carrier optimised device, build quality - even the software is OK.
Shaun I had 3T and S8+ the last year and made the switch to the Mate 10 pro a week ago. This phone is amazing! As quick as the OnePlus and much better battery and camera. My Samsung got battery and lag issues after 9 months. And it never had the quickness of the 3T and Mate 10 Pro. But God I do miss Samsung pay. I thought it would work on my Gear S3 but not with Huawei... Other Android devices but not this one yet.
Mark Awachie the build is awesome. On pair with the best! Samsung have the best display in the business. But to be honest, I can't really make a difference between FHD+ on the Mate 10 and 2k in the S8+. The Samsung is more vivid.
the background app alert isnt a Huawei thing, i am using a 1+3 on android 8 and sometimes i get these notifications as well, but not very frequently tho
I'm using a Zenfone 3 with Android Oreo and I also have those pesky notifs. Luckily you can edit notification settings so you don't see them in the lock screen or as a notif when your phone is awake but you will still see them when you bring down the notification shade.
Looks like they ditched the headphone port. Thats a biggy for me, as I often plug into my cars Aux, since I don't have a Bluetooth head unit, and I frequently plug into a PA system for organised events.
The "normal" Mate 10 still has a headphone jack. And if you don't have a Bluetooth head unit, there are Bluetooth accessories out there that you can plug into the aux to turn it into a Bluetooth receiver.
2:51 I bet you tried to place the stock weather widget on Nova Launcher. It's a known bug which hasn't been fixed so far, but everything else should work. And at least Huawei is being nice for telling you that the launcher you're trying to use might not be as stable or battery friendly as the stock launcher (though again, that whether widget bug is pretty ridiculous IMO since it has been there since EMUI 3.0 as far as I remember). And for the notification of active apps running in the background, that's how Android Oreo works - I get exactly the same one on my Xperia XZ1 Compact and I can't dismiss it either. And as for the UI design and features, I actually like it a lot. I use knuckle gesture quite often and also like how it doesn't allow app drainers like Facebook and Messenger in the background. I honestly don't find it problematic or annoying. And finally the headset issues you mentioned, probably you got the defective model. Many people are reporting that Mate 9 and P9 had horrible BT connection but this one does not.
i've always found huawei cameras to be better than iphones, samsungs and pixels, but reviewers never seem to say that. not sure if it's because they don't know what they're talking about. you can turn the intensive power notification off for each app. you press the down arrow to expand the notification in lock screen, not swipe down.
Had this a couple months now! Not one issue thus far. Fantastic performance. bought unlocked and using on Vodaphone in UK. Coming from Nexus 6P I can get along with EMUI. Brilliant.
The day the mate line up is sold in T-Mobile stores is the day I buy this phone. I need the wifi calling feature too much. But this is my dream phone otherwise
I'm loving my Mate10Pro. I ditched EMUI launcher and put the Google Now launcher from the 6P days (I upgraded from a 6P and loved the launcher). The monochrome mode on this camera is insane. I use that mode the most. The detail and also the ability to use it at 1/15 iso3200 for ultra low light makes it totally worth it. I highly recommend the phone.
I own this phone it is the absolute best phone I have ever owned. Hands down. The battery lasts for days with heavy use, huge amount of storage, and really nice size.
Depending on how easy this thing is to root and flash back to stock Android, it might be an excellent buy. But if it's a viciously locked bootloader, no thanks
This happened exactly as I thought it would. The mobile market in the US is just like clothing brands were in junior high school in the late 90s. It's pretty much random, the kids just pick one to be hot and if you aren't wearing it, you're a loser. They don't give a rat's ass what's better or not. It's just happenstance. They picked Apple and Samsung, and everyone else will continue to be the not cool brand. It's the equivalent of American Eagle and Abercrombie and Fitch circa '98-ish It's dumb as hell, but it is what it is nonetheless.
Javier Lombardo Von - Vietinghoff Scheel are the cameras really that good? I tried a regular mate 10, and I wasn’t impressed, I think I would prefer my iPhone 8 Plus camera, but I tried that huawei only for few minutes, after this review and your comment I’m really curious now
True. I got a good offer for this. But i passed. I just cant stand emui. Got htc u11 plus instead. But im really curious of the camera and the AI of the mate.
The notification issue you bring up around 3:10 in the video is an Android O thing I believe. I recall it can be disabled somehow either with an app or natively in Android 8.1
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] I completely agree. I used emui on my last phone (Honor 8) and couldn't wait to get away from it. Notifications are a disaster, you can't swype from lock screen as you said and they also disappear from status bar once the phone is unlocked. The emui list goes on. Pity since Huawei does manage hardware and design pretty on par with the top dogs out there nowadays, but emui has to be a deal breaker.
I'm getting this over the S8 or S9 for the simple fact I think I'm one of the only people that really hate the curved screen that Samsung has gone with lately, it's what caused me to leave them and go over to LG now I'm probably going to try Huawei. I have a physical job so I generally have a heavy-duty case on my phone and the curve just doesn't work so great with that
I hope they fixed those annoyances in emui 9, like not being able to even pull down notifications? Or the volume key being used for activating the camera? That's gonna be annoying. (Cause I'm getting the Mate 10 Pro)
Why carrier brand is such a big factor in the US? In my country there's also a carrier bundling but most people don't really care about it and some (me included) even buy phones that are not even released officially or imported from china.
Unlocked phones weren't really a "thing" here until recently. The carriers have always had a stranglehold on the market. Consumers have just *always* bought their phones from carrier stores, and it's a tough habit to break. (Remember also that the US has had a history of employing different network technologies, so for a long time you actually had to buy your phones from the carriers if you expected them to work right. TDMA/iDEN/CDMA/GSM ... it's a tougher cocktail to manage than just having all-GSM everywhere.)
Arif Rizky many in the U.s. think that the carrier price is the true price of the phone, not realizing that they will end up paying many hundreds through 2 years on a finance agreement. They just sign sign sign away. I sold an iPhone 7 recently to a co-worker for $200 and our boss thought I was ripping them off, yet our boss had recently gotten an iPhone 8 but she paid "only $49" for it.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] thanks for the reply man! I just hope unlocked phones will be more common there. While that may be a good or a bad thing. One thing I know is option and competition is a good thing for everyone.
Just realized watching your videos with HTC noise-canceling headphones are indeed a blessing! Your ambient music background made ur videos into art pieces ❤️❤️❤️
As always i love to hear you speak on and on. You never bore me. Your voice has the spark that most you tube reviewers lack and ya you're pretty good at what you do .
I love EMUI, IMHO, it's the best Android skin available. Actually, the reason I'd like to return to Huawei is just EMUI. Today my daily driver phone is Galaxy S8 and I would say, Samsung UX is nice but slow. Unfortunately, Mate 10 Pro is very expensive so my wish must wait for better prices.
I hate emui it a iphone copy cat. My mum had so much problems with it. Many launchers dont work well with it. Slow and laggy many of the times. And when compared to my s7 edges touchwiz it just as bloated, at least there are app for touchwiz where i can permanently disable all the bloats (bk disabler)
Watching from mate 10 pro, I usually really like your reviews but you didn't give this one justice. You swiped the wrong way for the notification and you can disable the annoying notification in the the settings that u spoke of. I agree that emu launcher is not as good as nova launcher but it's not so bad.
I've been using the Mate 9 for over a year. Was previously a longtime Samsung user.....but, EMUI works just fine for me. No device is going to be perfect for everyone's taste, though. But I'm sold on Huawei device quality and performance - and price. I happen to prefer the features of the regular Mate 10 (not a fan of the tall skinny displays, I want expandable storage and a headphone jack too). Hope it is also made available in the US. A realistic price would be in the $600 - $650 range soon. Great video review - as always. Thanks, Michael!
This notification about apps running in the background is the new "feature" of 8.0 Oreo. It is fixed in 8.1. OnePlus 5 has the same issue after update.
Sorry to hear it's an issue on other devices running 8.0, but this is most definitely an EMUI thing that I've been complaining about on Huawei/Honor phones for over a year. It significantly predates Oreo.
Thanks; that clears *one* of the problem notifications (there are two categories of them, one of which is, I suspect, the 8.0 problem). But here's the thing: I don't *want* to disable the power-intensive notifications. They really ARE useful when an app is running away in the background EMUI just isn't smart enough not to also display it for foreground apps. Very very frustrating.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] that's true, also I would love phone to have a better landscape experience (don't know about other phones) . It just doesn't feel right.
Mark C true facts here. If they every break into the us lg/sony and others are toast and Samsung will get hit hard but its hard to pry an Apple user away from the prison that is iOS
EMUI Is seriously not as bad as you said.. I mean it is at least as good if not better than Samsung's skin.. Plus it has oreo AND project treble.. BTW im pretty sure you can turn off that unremoveable notification thing...
I'm using Mate 9 running Android O, the notifications can be disabled in the settings. You choose to hide it from lockscreen, status bar, or even notifications centre. Different settings can be applied to apps individually.
I really don't like Samsung's third-party interface either, but it has none of the problems EMUI has ... and it actually has a unified look and feel. EMUI is an iOS clone with a ton of cruft shoveled on top. As for the power-management alerts: there are actually two (!) categories of these. The Android alert is indeed an 8.0-level "feature," but EMUI also has its own background-process policeman with similarly annoying notifications that pop up when you're actively using an app. Been complaining about it for ages.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] you can disable the battery notifications for individual apps or just shut them off completely. Also, not sure what was up with your Bluetooth experience because I've been using a mate 10 pro for months with Bluetooth headphones and it's been flawless.
As I said in the video, shutting them off completely is *not* something I want to do because it's a smart feature and I don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater. I just don't need persistent power-consumption notices about apps I'm actively using. Expecting the user to micromanage to OS to prevent that is just stupid.
It's criminal how you don't have a few million subscribers man.
zakaria omar exactly
But he will.
zakaria omar well go get him some then
zakaria omar - true one of the best reviewers out there. Better than mkbhd I would say
Cus his channel is new, before it he was working with pocket now channel.
I've been looking for this a long time.. Thanks!!
Thanks
I did that it still shows the notification?
ben sanzone do you know how to remove the (flipboard) news on huawei mate 10 pro?
.....but the notification that you can't remove when running something is a problem with Android 8.0, not with Huawei.
And on the OnePlus 5/5T
They fixed it with Android 8.1 Oreo.
That's the problem with Huawei. My own Android 8 smartphone don't have this problem
My P10 runs super smooth with Nova Launcher on emui 5.1 and you don't swipe away those powersaving notifications, you answer the question if the phone should close the app regularily or not and then it's gone.
I like how this guy always goes back to basics with shortcuts to stuff, convience, calls and signal
Same, it would mean the world to me if Samsung started putting that battery in their phones
I don't know what's the deal with disliking EMUI. I like it quite a lot. I even tried other launchers and went back to EMUI's default each time :P
Maverick Hunter K Same. It's a distinct look. You can't fight it.
Yep, 7x user here. I really like EMUI. Very flexible and useful.
Love EMUI Also
I find stock android really hideous and the EMUI is an elegant solution to that in my opinion.
Same here
About EMUI. I'm on EMUI 5.0.1 on the honor 8 and I have used NOVA Launcher for a year now without any issues, maybe it's a problem of the new version though. Your nova launcher crashed due to the analog clock widget. Same thing happened me. And the background apps notification, isn't that part of Oreo?
You are quickly becoming my favorite You Tuber. Great, relaxing atmosphere with your videos. Notifications...ON!!
This phone deserves to be in the 800$ range, a phone with 4000mah battery with luxury features is always my choice .. Buying it instead of s8+ next week
I have s8 and I would too
agreed.
$800*
ModerMon ?? Mate 10 pro costs 450€ so not really I guess
Did you buy the phone? I want to buy this phone... do you recommend it?
I'm really interested to hear your take on how it does again the HTC U11+.
you are SOOOOOOOO underrated!seriously what kind of person wouldn't subscribe to you after watching at least one video?

A Monochrome camera is the best implementation of a dual camera setup. The Monochrome camera on the Nokia 8 produces gorgeous photos.
That notification about the apps running in the background is a part of Android O, I get that as well on my Pixel 2 XL
Imagine the Mate 10 Pro with OxygenOS from the OnePlus 5T. You couldn't tell me that the perfect smartphone wouldn't exist
They would be THE phone to rule them all
There are only handful of tech youtubers, whose videos I find very engrossing..

EMUI is more into features than into simplicity
Thanks for the feedback! We'll have to agree to disagree about the horror show that is EMUI. :)
I got this phone for a month and I can say that this the best, most close to true ! Great job!
I’m a simple man, I see Mr Mobile I click immediately
I don't know why the subscribers is not increasing because your videos each one is awesone

It's supported by project Treble, no? So putting stock AOSP should not be too hard
Scintillating word play , stunning visuals you’re in a class of your own and a reviewer like no other love your vids they always just stand out
ive been rocking a honour 8 my next phone will probably be another Huawei. ive been really impressed by them.
Your videos are so beautifully structured, Mr. M! Like the type of textbook essay my professors never got from me.
the background app alert isnt a Huawei thing, i am using a 1+3 on android 8 and sometimes i get these notifications as well, but not very frequently tho
I think it comes with the Oreo
Instant Gratification Monkey You're right - it's an Android 8.0 Oreo thing, that can't be blamed to Huawei UI.
Funny I don't get these notifications on my V30 running Oreo.
박재인 I'm not getting these stuff too on my V20... cause still running on Nougat lol
I'm using a Zenfone 3 with Android Oreo and I also have those pesky notifs. Luckily you can edit notification settings so you don't see them in the lock screen or as a notif when your phone is awake but you will still see them when you bring down the notification shade.
Price drop + Custom ROM & I'd be sorely tempted to pick up this phone. Massive battery life is very tempting.
After a long time I've liked a review. Equally pointing out the pros and cons and finally giving the fair judgement. Great review!
Well you might want to watch more Mr. Mobile then. All his reviews are like that
2022 and still rolling like fine butter.
Looks like they ditched the headphone port. Thats a biggy for me, as I often plug into my cars Aux, since I don't have a Bluetooth head unit, and I frequently plug into a PA system for organised events.

Try Auto Notification app. You can block the annoying Android System notification that way.

i've always found huawei cameras to be better than iphones, samsungs and pixels, but reviewers never seem to say that. not sure if it's because they don't know what they're talking about. you can turn the intensive power notification off for each app. you press the down arrow to expand the notification in lock screen, not swipe down.

Depending on how easy this thing is to root and flash back to stock Android, it might be an excellent buy.
But if it's a viciously locked bootloader, no thanks
Ryukachoo Even if you unlock the bl, finding a custom ROM working on Huawei's CPU is impossible.
Ryukachoo I wanted to buy it but its very difficult to root it.. So I went back to Samsung
it's based on a kirin processor!
basically custom roms is a dead end !
krishna Venki Not entirely
It supports Treble, which means any bone-stock AOSP build can be loaded without issue
Huawei actually tells you how to unlock it.
Would you recommend it since the pre-order includes a $150 gift card?
You know it's funny I'm watching this video on a dull aluminum airplane wings
Can't your videos just go on and on?! Its so amazing watching your videos. Loved the review.
It's the equivalent of American Eagle and Abercrombie and Fitch circa '98-ish It's dumb as hell, but it is what it is nonetheless.
i bought it yesterday its fantastic, cameras are better than pixel, low light video an photos are best in cellphones by far
Man, that Camera photos looked so amazing!
Absolutely stunning review as always!❤️
The notification issue you bring up around 3:10 in the video is an Android O thing I believe. I recall it can be disabled somehow either with an app or natively in Android 8.1
It's also been a longtime problem with EMUI, which I've been complaining about for years.
Could you please review the HTC U11+
Mbuuqw Plays I know, it can be imported. 😊
As always i love to hear you speak on and on. You never bore me. Your voice has the spark that most you tube reviewers lack and ya you're pretty good at what you do .
You're swiping the wrong way for the high power notification dismissal
I love your commentary style bro! It's unique.....
U deserve 1 million
Anybody knows what kind of smartwatch is Michael Fisher using...?
in my opinion its the best phone of the year. Freaking love everything about it !!!
How are you telling me this guy doesn't have 5 mil subs?? Love your videos
Can we say that in your opinion, the Mate 10 and S8 cameras are overall equal? (as you seemed to imply at 7:31)
Watching from mate 10 pro, I usually really like your reviews but you didn't give this one justice. You swiped the wrong way for the notification and you can disable the annoying notification in the the settings that u spoke of. I agree that emu launcher is not as good as nova launcher but it's not so bad.
Notifications on EMUI are straight up shit. Nothing more. They're bordering on broken.
Aside from the questionable UI design, the mate 10 pro kills it on all fronts, especially in battery life.
Ewerton Magalhaes can't dismiss it. I've tried
This channel deserves 10 mil subs, even though it takes around 5 days for you to upload a video, you just make it perfect
Thanks; I've maintained a 2-video-per-week pace since the start. Takes time. :)
It's worth it every time!
I'd take the standard 10 with the headphone jack and SD card and higher resolution screen too!
Close your eyes and you still get to picture the video in your head, thanks to mikes voice and presentation 😍
Yes I bought also huawei mate 10regular..and its lovely beautiful,,iam happy with it.
It significantly predates Oreo.
you can disable it; go to Battery>>>setting(gear icon)>>>>turn off power intensive prompt.
Great video as always.
It just doesn't feel right.
mate 10 pro is Best phone for the year
that power saver notification is behaving exactly like that in one plus 5 also
I haven't really faced any of these issues on my honor 8 which I've had for a little more than a year now 😅
S Halder Same, I really love my Honor 8
Can we have a smaller version please?
Just bought one after your review
So? How was it??
How much is it
I Just got it and i LOVE IT! You need to get it and check out trick vida 4 huawei om UA-cam! This phone craps on everything Else, but mate 20 pro!
U.S is scared of this phone. This phone is actually way better than samsung and iphone trust me ive had samsung and iphone, but huawei takes the cake.
Mark C true facts here. If they every break into the us lg/sony and others are toast and Samsung will get hit hard but its hard to pry an Apple user away from the prison that is iOS
They damaged Huawei by banning them and cutting Google Play 🥺
Why can't you swipe to extend notifications?
EMUI Is seriously not as bad as you said.. I mean it is at least as good if not better than Samsung's skin..
Plus it has oreo AND project treble..
BTW im pretty sure you can turn off that unremoveable notification thing...
I'm using a OnePlus 3 Oxygen OS on Oreo and have the same problem with the usage notification too. Pretty sure it's an Oreo thing
I have the Mate 10 Pro and I agree with everything you said. I threw a skin for the software and it has made the experience better.
