Eric Johnson was absolutely "in the zone" during this whole performance - unreal playing and creativity...nice transcription, especially of that opening section Levi. Cheers!
Yeah, his playing on this night was bestowed upon him from that unknown entity. It’s one of those super rare occasions, when everything is just lined up right and some sort of otherworldly confidence just envelops you and it’s almost surreal and existential. Hendrix Band of Gypsies album from New Year’s Eve is another one of those. The U.S. hockey team beating Russia in the Olympics decades ago. There are more (feel free to reply back with some other examples). It’s like you’re in the zone. Nobody can explain how or why it happens…it just does. I’m sure Eric was aware that this was a big opportunity, to go on Austin City Limits. It’s recorded and filmed in good quality (for the time) and that show can really do wonders for somebody’s career. He was lucky that magic infiltrated him that night, and so are we, and it was all recorded and will forever remain immortal for generations to enjoy.
My guitar teacher (Carl Brown) got me into Eric's playing and style as it's his favorite guitarist. I gotta say he's one hell of a player. From his phrasing through to his near flawless technique. The man is just a beast on 6 strings! 🔥🤘
Eric Johnson is out of this world, he's quickly became one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Like, I was aware of him since always, but only recently is when I started actually getting into his music and damn, such an unique guitarist, not only because of his tone, one of if not the most recognizable guitar tones out there, but his chord voicings and melodies are all so amazing, I just love the guy.
Every time my playlist rotates this song through the car speakers, I talk to my wife about the magic of Eric Johnson. (I do the same thing with Marty) 😁
> _Although Eric Johnson is a guitar player, a great way to look at some of the harmony, some of the chords he is a fan, of is to look at expressing them on the keyboard, because you can be very visual with a piano_ Also because he (and his siblings) learned piano at an early age. He's stated that this influenced his style and chord voicings. Thank you for another (as always) great vid, Levi. Thumbs up!
I was fortunate enough to see the great Steve Miller- Eric Johnson opened for him, around this time. EJ is incredible; fast and clean and so tasty. Near the end of the show, EJ came on with Steve and they did a couple tunes together, with Eric soloing and it was just beautiful!
This is excellent! So much to learn from this. Eric Johnson makes wonderful, melodic guitar pieces that also serve as a one stop shop for a guitar workout of a master class! So many incredible techniques in one place! Thank you Levi for providing the Tab!
> _Eric's _*_Trademark_*_ is playing these open chord voicings_ Well played, Levi. Well played. _Trademark_ is one of my favorites of Sir Johnson's stellar pieces.
I was two when this came out, and brother i don't think I'd be this good if I started playing then instead of last year. This is such a beautiful song. Thanks for the tips as well.
I have been trying on and off for years to try and play some of his stuff, in fact i paid levi a few years back to transcribe a couple of his solos. Thanks Levi. So clean at speed, Incredible player. Downward pickslanting, upward pickslanting still can't get it, i think i should give up.
Please don't give up!! Put in the time and effort, it does pay off. Special thanks to Levi to transcribing this masterpiece. I have been watching EJ play live since I was a teenager living in Texas. Practice your pentatonics and break each section down to very small but manageable runs until you get them down and strong them together. You'll sound like Eric in no time at all!!!! :)
Better than most of the Sharpnel guys out there for sure. Tone, contours, speed, musicality instead of that 3 note per string shred or triad swept arpeggios.
Painting the theory on piano In conjunction with the tablature & performance overlapped makes these videos invaluable resources. Something from Stevie Ray would be awesome.
Levi, thanks for the piano voicing lesson, instead of buying a new guitar, I should focus on a keyboard, it IS a great way to study voicings, and apply them to guitar/bass
100% man, was the best thing I ever did. It's even more apparent in this video. Showing that on the guitar is possible, but nowhere NEAR as clear, and it becomes about fingering and the technique required to play it.
@@LeviClay yessir, I am grateful my university and conservatory gave complementary piano as a subject, I love it but never bought one... Best way to teach/learn music!
I remember when I started playing, back in the early nineties, I was such a Vai fanboy, I thought he was the best ever... I then read EJ had been awarded guitar player of the year by a big magazine and I couldn't believe it, I barely knew the guy but how could anyone be better than Vai? Well, it didn't take much to make me understand after I watched and heard his playing... Obviously, I no longer care about who's "best", I still love Vai as well, but I can definitely see why anyone would rate EJ at the very top

Expertly put zenland. I imagine him meditating for hours before this performance.
Those chords at the beginning are simply perfection.
Eric's playing always does two things for me: it puts a huge smile on my face every time and it gets me motivated and inspired to play and practice!

Man, I've loved this clip for years. Thank you so much for tabbing this classic!
Loving these daily transcriptions and harmony/theory lessons - really appreciate your work Levy!
Wow, thanks for transcribing this. I've been wanting to learn it for 35 years.
Damn I'm old. ;)
Thanks man. I’m a huge fan of Eric as well. I appreciate your work transcribing, perhaps, the most epic Cliffs performance on video.
The only time I saw EJ live (Blue Note, NYC), the moment his lead guitar came through the speakers, I was totally destroyed. Unique.
The last 4 bars of your transcription are my favorite moment in the whole song. Has been since the first time I heard it 30+ years ago.

The 1990? Version at ASL where he’s in the blue shirt is a really good intro solo too!

I was hoping you were going to do this one
Can you maybe do some Zappa songs or Dweezil Zappa concerts transcriptions? Love the videos!
I saw him in the late 80's opening for Satriani, and frankly Satriani might have not even showed up, Johnson was **THAT** good live.

😂 right. The wedding ring is already stucked round his finger.
