    I forgot to mention, but the advance variation with the move... c5 is called the Botvinnik-Carls defence.

    At 13:26 the 5...a6 is a cool idea. I hadn't seen this before.

      @PassedPawns  Рік тому

      Yup! I remember that I was preparing some lines before a school tournament and I was unhappy with all of the lines after dxc5. a6 just occurred and after some deep analysis with an engine it turned out to be a very good variation.

    Im going to continue cramming the same stock openings i play now down their throats. Definately worth looking into for otb, though.

      Haha fair enough, I think even if you don't plan on playing a certain opening, it's nice to know its intricacies because the plans can very often be translated through different openings.

      @@PassedPawns and also useful to become predictable with openings and throw a new one out when they least expect it. I'm looking to get into a scrub section of an open tournament for 40 year old scrubs one of these days.

    • @PassedPawns
      @PassedPawns  Рік тому

      Definitely a plan to catch someone outside of their preparation.
      Grandmasters do it all the time with great success, so I wouldn't call yourself a scrub when you're adopting the tactics of the best players in the world lol.

      @@PassedPawns at the end of the day, I have to play like one to be compared to one. Regardless of preparation. I play a king's gambit with Bxf7+ that'd never work against a GM. But it's interesting to see how the people at my rating level on lichess have adapted to that threat. 😆

      @@chriszablocki2460 Fair enough. Unless you aspire to devote the next two decades of your life into becoming a grandmaster yourself, then the best approach to this game is to have fun playing it.
      That can mean playing "unsound" openings, but all that matters is you're finding it fun.
      However, I wish you the best performance in any future tournament you choose to participate in, because winning is definitely fun.

      Apologies for the late reply, you could either play h6 and then just trade the bishop off (or if it goes back, Qb6 is good). You're not worried about tradi g their dark squared bishop because then it will be a lot easier to target the pawn on c5.

    I've always been a part amused and part amazed that so many including yourself recommend lines in the Advanced Caro Kann that recommend advancing an early e6 without first developing the QB outside the pawn chain. I agree it's very playable but the result is playing standard known Advanced French positions a tempo down(for White). This means the question should be raised... If the position is so playable for Black, why does White play play the Advanced French at all? And yet, especially today you'll find that the Advanced Variation of the French is one of the most popular variations played by White.

    • @PassedPawns
      @PassedPawns  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for the comment.
      What you said isn't exactly true. The only time in this variation where I recommend the move e6... prior to developing the light-square bishop, is in the instance where white captures the dxc5 pawn.
      This capture variation does not have its own name in the French, and for good reason, it isn't popular and is never played at the top level because white has ruined their pawn structure, and overextended the e-pawn. It's even worse in the French defense since as you mentioned, black has an extra tempo.
      If you analyze that capture with an engine, black is already better.
      The most popular response to c5 in the advance variation is the move c3. The difference is, when c3 is played, the light squared bishop is already locked in by e6 and there is no compensation since the pawn structure is not ruined.
      In the Caro Kann line, our advantage is in the fact that after c3, e6 still hasn't been played and we get to achieve a superior position to the Advance French, even a tempo down.
      White plays the Advance French in order to keep the pawn structure closed and keep Black passive, and therefore it would be very rare for the dxc5 line to be played.
      Hope this clears everything up.

    That's the French except e6 for black.

    • @PassedPawns
      @PassedPawns  Рік тому +3

      Sort of, but the light square bishop is brought out and then e6. This can be perceived as an improved french with slightly different plans.
