Thanks for this breakdown, Tommie.I'm 53 and just started riding about 2 years ago. I did my first mogul run this year when the snow was good and forgiving. It wasn't pretty, and I fell a few times, but it was awesome. I was so tired after that, but the mental part (the fear) is now gone. And I also wanna say I appreciate your focus on breaking down these tough skills.

Live in Florida 55 years old been riding boards since 1996. I now spend 1 week boarding each month boarding. Thanks to you I’m getting better and you are the absolute best resource I’ve found. Your commentary is awesome and you do an awesome job of explaining. I will absolutely support you 100% every way I can. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for breaking down moguls. This is needed for any snowboarder out there who previously thought they were worth avoiding. Only can get good if you keep trying them and learning.
I hope you do more videos on how to handle steel black diamond runs without moguls. Wish I had more insight into how to turn early on such steep terrain. I can’t seem to turn my board down the fall line before turning without picking up hella speed

Moguls are great for edge warm-ups. Moguls for Snowboarders are underrated.

Liked your video. I’m a skier, and have been interested in how snowboarders handle bumps. Quite a lot of things are similar, such as using the terrain to manage your speed. Also I notice good snowboarders keep their upper bodies quite moving down the hill, just like good skiers. Skiers have the advantage that the knees are aligned correctly to absorb moguls.

I've been snowboarding since the 90s but I learned to ski first. I have always looked at the lines on mogul runs the same whether on two sticks or just one. The concepts are the same, just achieved through different movements. The fluidity and smoothness of someone cooking down moguls is amazing to watch and feels amazing when you're the one sending it

Cannot wait for snow season Down Under to arrive and to go find some moguls. This has been super helpful, thanks!!

It is important to note that rotation as an anticipatory move i.e opening or closing the shoulder by rotating through the spine will lead to inclination through the shaping phase of the turn causing your center of mass to be too far inside the turn making it difficult to transition to the new edge as well well as effectively managing pivot through the shaping of the turn. If we can start with twist using independent flex/extension of the knees and ankles to create early angles in our legs at edge change, then complimenting that with hip rotation rather than spinal rotation through the finish. This will allow us to maintain a balanced posture through all phases of turn which will allow us to effectively absorb terrain. I think you did an excellent job explaining hower it is super important that we distinguish where biomechanically rotation is occurring when we present. If i told a student to lead with shoulder 10 times out 10 they will rotate in the spine not the hips. For the record im going for my 3 this year and this was me practicing formulating my thoughts and not a critique of your video. You've been huge part of my teaching development and you inspire me everyday!

I always gain something from your vids! Don't stop. I would have never guessed you would describe yourself as an introvert. You always have so much energy! I wish I could cross paths on the snow to say thanks! I like to ride bumps using the back side of the top to make a banked turn, like a car turning at the Indy 500. I did purchase a benetek hoodie, and let me tell everyone, it is awesome, windproof, waterproof, etc, great stuff. Get one! Now! The only downside is it doesn't instantly make you a better boarder! 😅
Keep up the excellent work and energy!

I’ve been riding now for about 2 years with pretty limited amount of days on the slopes. Just last week got to experience the first really big mountains in my life. Let’s just say I wish I had seen this video before my trip😂 While I did really struggle on the hardest red and black runs with a lot of moguls, I feel I also progressed a lot. After watching this I actually can’t wait to get back in the thick of it and try this stuff out. Thank you for the awesome videos!

Tommie’s team taught this 50+ year old rider to hammer and love moguls in one afternoon. It totally opened up the mountain for me, and now I actively seek steep mogul runs.
Just do it. It’s worth it.

Tommie, I think the “complicated” turn you’re describing sounds like a down unweighted turn. They’re faster and allow us to absorb the terrain better than the up unweighted turn we all learn first. There’s another UA-camr, Malcom Moore, who describes these turns well… he hasn’t done the awesome mogul videos like you though. The key point I took away is that You’re timing the edge change with the rising crest of the mogul, absorbing it and changing edges quickly.

I would have liked to see a little more info on advanced mogul fun for things like doing jumps and spin tricks and how you handle that aspect of it. Maybe in a part 2;)

I love moguls, but I wish I was better at them! I can make it down basically any black diamond run with moguls but doing it without falling at least once is... difficult. I love em when they're powdery or slushy, but struggle when they're harder. Glad to see a vid like this!

I don’t hate moguls but I certainly prefer your west coast softer snow vs skied off ice coast moguls. Outside of technique I think snowboarding fitness is super important. You can only ride so long in them no matter how good you are if you aren’t physically ready. You make it look too easy Tommie!

Also, poker players have meet ups, games where they play against people who watch their vids, for fun. Just a suggestion, but maybe you could do half day meet ups, set a date (so people know if they can attend or clear their schedule) and then pick a number say 6 people, maybe divide the days by ability so you don't have a beginner trying to hang with more advanced, and spend the day, not to give lessons, but to have a fun day. Just a thought.

Can you go over an advanced technique to float over all the moguls as you go down? I saw a rider go down a hill straight line through a mogul field about the size of the ones in the video. I would like to understand how he did that.

I love your vids. You are awesome! Your instructions and guidance are wonderful, but sometimes you ride so fast that it is difficult to see the moves. I'm sure it takes more time to edit your videos, but having some slow motion in there would make the world of difference to many in your audience. Keep the videos coming!!
