  • Roof lantern problems are nearly always caused by the incorrect construction detail during installation, I have been asked to remove this old roof lantern as it simply fails to keep the rain out when there is a big storm
This is the first part of me fitting the new Korniche roof lantern where I talk about the issues with the old roof lantern and how we will change the construction detail to prevent future problems

Love your videos Robin. what I’ve learned from you and others over the last 3 years has given me the skills to undertake a complete back to brick renovation of my own property almost completely on my own. Keep up the good work! Chanel’s like these really do give people knowledge that could previously only be obtained by paid college courses and site experience. A lot of people still shun the idea that you can learn and become proficient via UA-cam but with dedication and effort you really can learn almost anything. Thanks again for all your hard work.

I bought and installed my Korniche lantern after seeing Robin with one on SkillBuilder. Easy to install, well made and its been totally dry inside for the last year. Would totally recommend them to anyone.

So glad you’ve made this video robin, I’ve done lots of orangeries sub contracting for a a local firm who use a local lantern company who make pretty overpriced crap, I have a private job to do for a good friend and have said I’ll be using this system due to price and great reputation… however I would probably have just made my up-stand as I always would with a good 10mm play without a second thought, very glad to have seen this, has probably saved me a day of head scratching and undoing my work. Thank you.

I have to say - this "As Built" design defies the logic of good design and water management.

It's logical that if gutters get saturated with debri and dry leaves during the summer season,as soon as heavy downpours of rain occur, the gutters will not be able to cope thus causing heavy ingress of water into the dwelling.

Hi Robin, thanks, looking forward to seeing how this goes. What is the flat roof system on your own roof?

I think in old money an inch of rain on an acre of land equates to about 110 tons ( approx raiding the memory bank )

So if there was the ability to clean the gutters, none of this would have happened?

Only way to stop having problems with box gutters is don't have box gutters. Even if you can get at them to clean them. The intention is there but nothing gets done until the water pours in. Then in the cleaning process damage to tiles and eventually box gutter. Water pours in. You mentioned flat roof. That would be my solution too. Strip off tiles right round. Construct pitched flat roof flashed and sealed way up under tiles. Build your upstand levelling box in the middle and plonk on your lantern. And leave a bit more space around it so humans can work around it. That last one is another architects nightmare. They have to be the least practical people on the planet. They think Builders are Spider Men or can fly. And they love box gutters. Say no more.
