The performance inconsistency comes from the RAM. With ddr4 windows tries to split the work on to all ram channels equally. But one of the two sticks is just 4 gb, which is probably already filled with windows crap. So counter strike is basically running with single channel ram here. It should run much better with two 8gb or two 16gb sticks.
yup, balance that ram if possible...even if less than the 20GB you installed during video. I am also not sure about that laptop with that version of windows, but some of the drivers for some of the performance laptops allowed shifting loads from GPU to CPU for certain tasks, and when Win 10 first came out it was dodgy. Might double check drivers and all hardware capabilities are being used.
For the MSI GT72, For more consistent peformance, check for vbios update also check that discrete gpu is enabled, set physx in nvidia control panel to cpu , Enable sport mode, This laptop had a lot of issues with windows 10 back in the day with switching from the integrated gpu too the discrete gpu, Best way to test if laptop is working as intended is try furmark gpu test and check if voltage is consistent, Had one of these myself back in 2016 too 2019, Was all kinds of buggy until bios, vbios etc was updated
Awesome info, thank you! Sport mode and Discrete GPU was enabled, I believe Physx was set to the GPU though. I made sure to set everything on Max performance in Nvidia settings. But I did not update the vBIOS or the regular BIOS for that matter. I wanted to see how this video would do before I spent a lot of time on it. I'm pleasantly surprised so many people took an interest in it, so I'll definitely make a follow-up.
@@SalemTechsperts Ah ok, What i had to do too make this laptop work as intended was fresh windows install, manually install drivers myself not windows update, including chipset, intergrated gpu drivers and then nvidia and other drivers last, enable discrete gpu switch on the laptop, button below power button says dGPU, update BIOS and vBIOS, I also had to redo the thermal pad on the motherboard chipset, its underneath the silver heatsink below gpu/ next too m.2 slot gotta take whole laptop apart for that, Not worth it imo, But my laptop screen died after 3 years ribbon connector burned itself too death randomly so its just been in a storage atm for 6 years, Just keep in mind this pc only likes windows 8.1 not windows 10 or 11 it hates it when it comes to gpu switching from intel gpu too nvidia

The crud on the keyboard doesn't even have top be a specifically nasty material. I think it naturally attracts crud, as my wife's MSI had crud all over it as well (and no, I wasn't using it). I just got a replacement motherboard for it, and had to clean on and between all the keys with alcohol with q-tips to make it look decent again. Tbh 90$ for a screen for this PC is not worth it. It's actually a beast for low end and highly upgradable but the replacement parts ahhh that's always the case with refurbished laptops. 😢
Personally I do think it deserves to be refurbished Besides being a decent low end gaming laptop, with the option to add more RAM and NVMescan be a work laptop, or thanks to its blueray drive, a reader for someone's collection of physical media
honestly I would be estatic to have the chance at a laptop of that caliber, with or without the screen display. But for any consumer, may be best to add a display and hopefully the seller accepts a best offer. Another fire video, as always from the greatest technician that ever lived, Lupe. 🔥🔥
I personally think you should get a display and let it live a good life after its refurb! I love the fact that you can add crazy amount of storage and RAM - given that DDR4 maxes out at 32GB sticks, that's 128GB DDR4 (even if downclocked to 2133MHz) in a laptop. Which is simply beautiful. Shame you don't do international shipping, because I'd happily buy that (I'm in the UK). The cooling is better than that of my HP OMEN 15 and the GTX 980 probably outperforms the OMEN's 1050Ti as well.
If you still wondering about your question at 22:12 and why the isn't fully utilized while gaming, I suspect the ram config is at fault here. I'dont exaclty know how this Motherboard handles an asymetrical ram config, but from my experience it ether, 1 can only use 8GB in dual channel mode and the other 12GB in singlechannel or 2 is defaults to using the whole 20GB in SC mode, halving your memory bandwdth to the CPU. And as the Greatest Technician thats ever Lived might know, singlechannel is a huge performance killer, even while usinga discrete GPU.
I had an MSI GE62VR, 6th gen i7 and a 1060. Nice keyboard, too. Great to use right up until the hinges snapped. I bought a replacement lid with hinges and replaced it. Unfortunately, I must have damaged the video cable during the swap because now there’s a verical band of digital noise covering a quarter of the screen. Still works fine using the HDMI output.
I bought a Clevo from around that era 6 or so years ago because, well, the thing *did* have an upgradeable MXM GPU in it. You may have also been running your RAM in single channel (if you had 3 of 4 slots populated), which would have presented you with quite a large bottleneck, especially with asset streaming. If it has the 980M 8GB, it would still be definitely useable as a budget gaming system.
The RAM was dual channel since I only had 2 sticks, but due to the size difference, CS was most likely running in single channel on the 16GB stick while Windows was taking up the 4GB one. It has the "980", not the desktop 980, but not the 980M. Yes, I too think it's ridiculous naming but it's quite powerful!
i distinctly remember having some form of this laptop at some point in time and dont remember where it ever went, and yet i remember that exact visual of the broken hinges being That Crappy
I'm surprised that this laptop uses those plastic screw mounts for the lid despite being so expensive at the time, my 2018 ROG GU501 laptop uses a metal screw mount with rails going up the side for extra support so I'm not worried about it breaking. It's one of those thin ones though so its normal operating temp is like 80c during gaming with fans on full blast.
all gaming laptop (and workstation) fans rejoice, Clevo is bringing out a new desktop replacement with 50 RTX series GPU and at least 4 m2 storage slots soon !don't waste money on branded crap that will cost a fortune to repair if that's even a possibility.

Oh Andy, I wish I could have a Laptop-PC as good as that one, and the fact that it doesn't have a screen is even better for me haha, in fact I have a 2013 hp laptop, 3rd generation i3, and I disabled the integrated 720p screen so that it would only be reflected on my monitor (1080p)😂I assure you that I can't play basically anything on it, but at least it's useful for watching movies and talking with GPT chat, luckily the mechanical keyboard that I put on it separately improves the experience, but anyway, my advice for you is that you put it up for sale on the page, that machine is a relic and you will surely sell it quickly to someone who values it and knows how to get the most out of it. If I can, I will ask a relative in US to buy it for me and send it to you.Greetings, I loved the video.

So to this day I own the MSI Titan GT75 (i7 10850H / RTX 2070) and it has very, very similar internals as this old Dominator Pro. You might be right about the build quiality but I just love these machines - they don't make 'em like they used to and as you can see they might take a lickin' but they'll keep on tickin'. I say max it out the RAM and SSD and see what this thing can do - I think you'll be pleasantly surpised! (BTW I take very, very good care of my Titan - you won't find it at the bottom of a recyling ewaste box for a long, long time).
I want to love MSI so much because their laptops are so friggin cool but I've never once heard a good thing about their laptops that lasted for more than a few months before it devolves into "don't buy MSI this is garbage." I'm rightfully scared of ever buying their laptops

Cheezuz. I owned one of those. Tried to fix the failing keyboard, fans and repaste it. The keyboard didn't connect properly so I gave it away to a "fixer" kid. This is painful to watch. Mine was 970M 1080p screen and cost only $1600 new.
I have a very similar model from about the same period. The battery is shot, and I have removed it...the drives were both dead, and one of the fans was catchy. No screen cause the hinges broke. I know it works well for nearly a 9 years old machine. AND when it was new was easily a 2k laptop. I don't want a new screen I want to hook it up with wireless peripherals and large screen monitor...for a gaming machine in my spare room. The problem I am having though is time...lol. I want to model a couple holders in 3d to print to affix it to the back of my tv and I need to figure out a simple way to have it power on with limited access to the physical buttons.
pro tip if you disassemble many of these hinges, and use either the dry teflon or dry graphite lube in the mechanism it should resist having a similar problem. At least in my xp. There are a few that the hinge stays okay in the screen/bezel but snaps off inside the main body...in that case nothing will help.

I’d keep it as is and use it to learn CAD because it would be a decent little work PC with a cheap monitor
That keyboard gooch looks delicious 😋
This would make a decent workstation for AV production.
