my pops brought ours home in the 80's i was only 5 years old .since then i worked in fabricating pressure vessels, vacuum chambers , food processing equipment, oil refineries, ironworker, ive done a lot and just the other day my dad caught me off guard and had me weld for him using the same old lincoln with the original 6013 rod from when he got the machine and it welded so smooth i didnt even have to chip off the slag ( real welders know what i am talking about) . the look in my dads face was priceless. keep in mind that nothing impresses old school fathers like mine. lincoln made this machine to last .
Wow you must be a really good welder. I cringe when I see the photos that new welders post online, as if they should be "proud" of their gobbly gook welds! ahhhh! Nothing is worse than scrolling through pages and pages of hideous, poorly shaped, crooked welds, with improper penetration. But then on Amazon, I was reading a review for an $84 "Hone" arc welder. There are many super cheap arc welders, but in the reviews for the Hone 165 arc welder, a guy posted photos of the commercial steam pipes he welded with it at work, and my jaw dropped. They were the most beautiful welds I've ever seen. I purchased the welder based on his reviews, and the arc is glass smooth, just as the man suggested. For $84! What the hell? I am actually shocked that they can make a really nice welder for $84 that runs on 120 or 220 volts, and has more than enough power for 3/32 welding rods. I am using the welder at 40 amps, and it obliterates a 3/32 electrode smoothly.

My grandpa has one of these welders that is 42 years old and it still works. He bought it new in the late 1970’s. We run 7018, 6011, and nickel 99 rod. It’s a very smooth running machine
Never welded before but have some projects that need done, so after much research, I decided to go stick over mig due to simplicity and cost. I will probably only use it a few times a year and don't need it to be pretty or too professional. Glad to hear all the positives on this machine. I just bought a new 110/220 one from Home Depot and am excited to get started.

@@meangreen7389 I got the Lincoln "Tombstone" style in dual current. I've used it a few times. I suck at it, but am getting a little better. Just doing basic stuff that doesn't have to be pretty. Good enough for what Im doing.
@@MrGoblue1131 - Thank you for your response. I too have some minor repairs around my home and welding would be the most applicable method to complete these projects. None of these will have any stress nor will they be visible as they are small mending jobs on a fence. I also don’t have any experience welding but know of the hazards to eyes, lungs and skin. But I’m learning from friends and family and I’m just about to pull the trigger on a welder. Thanks again.
Before you do anything critical, make sure your welds are done properly. I’m not criticizing, but welding is like learning the guitar. It’s easy to begin and play badly, but playing well takes quite a while. It takes about a one pound box of 3/32” rod to become vaguely proficient, before you should weld something you need.
I bought mine (Century AC 230Amp), used for $175 in Oct2021. I'm lovin it. So versatile and simple. Pick the amperage and go at it.
I've had my AC-225/DC-125 for nearly forty years and it's more than paid for itself. They're easy to work on if needed (rarely) and converting old ones to socketed panel connectors is cheap if your old leads need replacement.
Dad bought one of these when I was 9 or 10. I'm 60 now, and the current owner of it. I changed the very noisy fan last year, put in a more efficient one from Amazon. This unit still does amazing work for its age.
Going to pick one of these up tomorrow along with 1970s delta bench grinder and a torch/tank setup for 200$. I'm a crappy welder as I learned from my dad who isn't a great welder on a ACDC225 starting some 35 years ago. I cannot wait to start practicing and fabricating. First project are some Gate brackets and hinges for the front driveway as they don't make a matching hardware for what is embedded in the brick/concrete columns from 1966.
I got mine for 75.. it's a reliable beast! PEOPLE... IF YOU HAVE A FANCY MULTI PROCESS MACHINE YOU SHOULD STILL PICK UP ONE OF THESE OLD WORK HORSES AND LEARN AND TEACH YOUR KIDS THE OLD FASHION AC STICK... PS 7014 RUNS LIKE A DREAM ON THE OLD AC.
i bought mine in 1975 too $99.oo with hood and gloves included, new right off the Lincoln dealer floor and still runs today just like it did when i bought it

I bought mine at WW Grainger. About 1971, had it for over 20 years used it a lot !!
In all that time the only problem was. The fan quit.
I took it apart oiled the bronze bushings, and it was all like new again !!
I used a lot of 7014 rod, Very good AC machine !!

these machines will run after all the inverters have died. i have used them for 60 years, i can't think of a machine that has been in production that long
I was talking with a Lincoln factory rep a couple years ago who was telling me that Lincoln had recently produced the 1 millionth AC225 welder! The best selling welder of all time, and still manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio! I’m old school, and have stick, TIG and mig machines, but if they were all taken away from me and somebody offered me a choice of a new inverter or a 40 year old Lincoln tombstone for free, I’d take the Lincoln! I was a certified welder for 40+ years, and when my employer started replacing the transformer welders with inverters, they soon found out that if they broke down, and they often did, it typically cost $1500 minimum to get them repaired! That’s half the cost of a new machine! I’ve always been a Lincoln fan, but my local welding supplier recently told me that Miller Electric will be totally out of the transformer welder business this year, and only offer inverters! That’s a crying ass shame!

My Dad had one of these for many years. He built log splitters, trailers, go-karts, etc with it. My job was to change the amperage, operate the chipping hammer, and DON'T LOOK AT THE LIGHT!!!!! :)
I got one of these after my grandfather passed and it was my great grandfather's, he taught me how to weld on it and it is a super simple machine
7014 is the cats ass for that welder....6011 is good for first pass .That welder is one of the best stick welders ever made.
I run mine off of a 40 amp breaker and it doesn't bother the welder one bit.

@@TheTenmm it most likely doesn’t run full amperage and can only go up to maybe 90 amp @ 40%
I run mine on a 30 amp circuit. 115 amps . 1/8 rod. It will trip the breaker if I get into welding and don't take breaks. Smaller rod/75 amp/ no problem
For home welding projects this is perfect. You really don’t need a $6,000 machine.
Looks like a tad bit cold, if your running 7018 , and you can get the slag to peel off the weld it will peel up on its own, then you will know it's set perfect

I sold this one and missed it so much I got another one. They're great!
I got a new one in about 1966 .for about 100 dollars i still use it.
People now listing these for sale for $350, even though they know they have never used it, and they don't want it taking up space. It's shocking how unrealistically high the price of old used welders is. There are at least 5 of these AC225 welders for sale for $300 to $400 in my local area. That's just too much. The thing is, nobody buys an old used dedicated stick welder, unless they were born in 1931. I purchased a new "Hone" brand $84 arc welder from Amazon that has a glassy smooth arc, and is dual voltage. But, I really do want an AC machine, because I believe the lack of magnetic instability of the arc (arc blow) on an AC welder, is superior for precise welds.
I really like them, though I almost always use a little inverter these days. Used ones used to around $100-$150, but those days are probably gone.
I bought a nice one this morning locally for $125. I’ve had a 140 Lincoln flux core mig for several years but this is my first stick welder. I wanted something to weld heavier steel when needed which will only be a couple times a year. Seems to work great so far aside from me being a little rusty with a stick. I like the reputation of these machines so I’m glad to have it.
Look for one sold as craftsman. 2024 these Lincoln 225 sell for $100 plus. on facebook market place. depending on how pretty and accessorizes/rods/ helmets/

I’ve a question as a brand new hobbyist. I don’t have the 220 power outlet configured in my garage. If I had a large enough amp on a large generator would the power from the generator be ‘clean’ enough for this unit? The generator would be outside of the garage. I know that there are combo generator welders out there but they are purpose built to run off generator power. My question primarily has to do with using what I have for power and secondarily ensuring the Lincwelder can safely feed directly off the generator. Thanks in advance.
It would need a really big generator, but it would work. I can’t imagine that ‘dirty power’ would hurt one of these since there aren’t really any delicate electronics. A small inverter welder can give the same amperage output with less input amperage because they are more efficient, so you wouldn’t need as big of a generator. Most inverters will also run off of 110 with some limitation on output.
Kevin, this is one of the very few welders you can run from dirty power because it doesn't have the electronics that require a sine wave. Instead, it uses a simple but BIG transformer - a lot of wire wound around an iron core. I'm told, but I don't know first hand, that the older AC-225 welders were superior because they used copper in the windings, whereas the newer ones use aluminum. Copper is more expensive, heavier, but lower resistance. This is a beautiful kick-ass welder, it's totally reliable and my go-to for everything but aluminum. BTW, you don't need 50A for the lower ranges you use for most work - 230V 30A (dryer) will do. Less amperage than that, or 120V instead of 230V, would maybe work on small stuff.

@@montgomd Thanks. Unfortunately my garage wasn't setup for a hobbyist. I read one comment that it was easy to install but, Ill be honest, Im a little afraid of the breaker box. My oven is out and my dryer is out (2nd floor) so that means either getting creative or an expensive electrician visit. I appreciate the info. I may start to watch some How-to's on adding one to the garage. Btw, I think the amperage would be real low considering it would be 0.030 thick sheet metal on vehicle; no frame work at this time.
Good day sir l love how you explain and show in detail l am looking to start a sidelines business into full-time job on welding project's for people I have a 110v TC3508 TOOLCRAFT 160A stick Welder but when I was welding a sliding gate it kept getting hot and switching off and I have to wate around 15 minutes for it to cool down I am running it on a 30 amp breaker can you advise me on a good 110v welder in detail thanks 👍
Most likely, you are using an undersized extension cord, for the amps you are pulling and the distance away from the circuit breaker, and the rod size diameter is too big. Try a 1/8" or even 1/16" 6013 rod if you have to.

That's funny, I picked up one of those Sears machines at a curb sale ( I thought it was a battery charger before looking at it). The high range doesn't work but low works perfectly- just as nice as my Lincoln 225 seen in the video above. It's all cleaned up sitting in my storage area since neither of my sons wanted it (smile).
I thought it was funny seeing a stick welder being described.
We ran a few of those 225s at my first welding production job over 50 years ago- never had a problem with any of them, so I bought one- still using it, Harbor Freight has 1/16th stick rods that are great for thin stuff, running between 40 and 60 amps. Nice vid, Tim welds. Mike

Anyway to replace the stingers and ground by itself without cables or do you have to replace the cables also
You can replace the electrode holder or the work clamp on their own. Some of them have a screw that will clamp right on the wire, while others use a crimped connector. Some welding supply stores or auto repair shops can crimp on the connectors for you if needed, but I’d probably just get the type than installs with a screw.

If it is made of steel or cast iron, but if it is galvanized- grind off the zinc or do not breathe the smoke if left on.

Yes, but I don’t think it’s worth doing compared to just getting a DC machine.

Remember that this is a transformer welder, not an inverter or digital.
I have 30 amps. I don't run over 120 amps, and will trip the breaker at 10 to 15 minutes of continus arc.A big or heavy project will take longer.
I just bought a Lincoln 185 at auction, built in ...1958 ! It still works but only on full 185 amps using a 7014 stick, can anyone tell me what may be wrong or why it wouldn't spark/strike at any amps less than 185 ?

Are you using old or wet rods.
Probably a bad switch selector, unplug it, take it apart, wire brush and scrape all the contacts,
Blow it all clean then try it. Or turn the selector switch back and forth. HARD AND FAST !! 20 or more times, to clean the contacts, then try it.

Stick welders control the current, which is up to 225 amps. The voltage will depend on your rod and arc length, and is usually in the 20-30 range.
Yes, why the AC only model? I have the AC/DC model and also the Vulcan Commander.

@@marloflores8325 I love it! I think it's great! Just be aware that it's a heavy beast ~150 lbs. I made a cart for it right away. There are some reviews of it on UA-cam IIRC.
Now, 2024,The ac can be bought off facebook market place for $100 if you are pacient. The ac/dc sells used for $400 They made 10 ac for every 1 dc. And sears sold them as craftsman

No, but it strikes pretty easily and is very stable. Those settings/features are usually found on the smaller, more modern inverter machines.
My pops left me the same welder, AC 225-S, I’ve been practicing with 6011 1/8 rods at 90amps. The rod sticks a lot, I guess I need to up the amps to 105 or 120 ?
Yeah, or switch to 3/32 which will love 90 amps (it will be a tad hot), I think I ran 1/8 at 130.
6013 is easier to start on I believe. I haven’t used this stick welder tbh, I’ve used a smaller Lincoln stick. Make sure you’re in the right polarity too.
I just picked one up for 50$ today anyone have a suggestion on how to power it mobily I want to put it in my truck and use it if I need to fix something on the road
There’s a video on my channel about running a welder with a generator with some of the basic math and the necessary adapter. Spoiler alert: You need a pretty big generator to get much power out of the welder.

You need 50 amps. There are no regular wall plugs that can carry that kind of current.
The need 220 volt to run. 120 volt isn't enough.

I am confused !!! So this is a machine that can run 225 amps but you can connect it to a 50 amp power source without tripping the breaker??
Great question. Power is voltage multiplied by amperage. The power out of the machine is the same as the power in (ignoring efficiency losses). Since the voltage in is higher than voltage out, the amperage in can be lower than the amperage out.

Yes, easily. You can weld as thick as you would like with multiple passes using a stick welder like this.

Can you weld car panels with a Stick welder?
Maybe, but I would recommend a MIG welder because there is no slag, which allows you to make a lot of really small welds to spread the heat and avoid distortion.

To where can you hook it up if you don’t have an 50 amp breaker. I’ve heard you could hook it up the stove or dryer. Or how could I get a 50 amp breaker ?
Dryer is 10 gauge 30 amps, don't hook a 50 amp to a dryer circuit or you risk a fire , min 8 gauge line 220 50 amps. This is not a place to try a hack job trust me.
That is why you have a beaker to protect the wire.
No you won’t get full capability of the welder but I would not be afraid to use a dryer out let in a pinch.
I have used mine for over thirty years plugged into a dryer outlet. The machine only draws 50 amps at the highest setting and even then only when using a very large electrode. In a pinch I’ve used a 20 amp wall outlet and as long as I stayed under the 100 amp setting it worked fine.

If you have an electric stove, you have a 50 amp breaker. The breaker dosen't mind how many things are wired to it. Just use one at a time.

The generator would have to be fairly large (probably over 10 kW). A better setup for mobile welding is a welder generator combo. If you already have a generator that you want to use a welder with, I would recommend looking for an inverter welder because they are more efficient (use less power for the output that you get). mr welder pretty easy to wire a 220 breaker. You can even UA-cam how to do it. Just be careful

I run mine off a 7500 watt generator, I just can't weld hotter than about 180 amps
