One day, New York circa 2005ish, I was in line at a deli and I spotted Gene Wilder in line in front of me. I am not someone who gets star struck but I am an enormous Gilda fan and, well, seriously, this was Willy Wonka! I was dying to tell him how wonderful I thought he was, but mostly I had about a thousand questions about Gilda that I wanted to ask. Lucky for him I'm too shy to approach anyone like that. Based on his interaction with the clerk he was a regular at this deli. The clerk asked him something along the lines of, "you have a big day planned?" Gene replied, "Just heading up to visit Gilda." and I thought that was amazing. Gilda passed away 15 years before that and he was still visiting her grave. True love.
I love his voice....he was an extremely loving man ... now I can see that he was a fantastic comedy actor ... but also an ordinary calm, modest man....
Her biography was excellent. One thing it really brought to light is that many male doctors don't take women's health complaints seriously. She saw a bunch of drs before one did a CBC. That is seriously a flawed mindset that women are neurotic and are imagining symptoms.
It's so true that doctors sometimes do NOT listen to their patients. Poor Gilda knew she was sick and they wouldn't listen to her. This was not all that long ago when women were still not taken seriously, even women with influence like Gilda.
Made all the more poignant by what Gene says in this interview about them asking her what she was afraid of ("that I have cancer"). Hearing that just makes my heart ache all the more for both of them! :(
It's tragic that such a beautiful, talented, and funny lady died so young because she wasn't diagnosed early enough. I've read that Gilda knew that something was wrong and doctors would blow her off. One doc told her husband, "She's a very nervous, emotional girl. She's got to relax." Cancer ran in her family but the doctors weren't looking for it.
Operation Agatha- If you know that something is wrong, I encourage you to fight for a diagnosis. Many doctors don't take women patients seriously. We know our own bodies better than anyone.
Yep. He is extraordinarily classy here. Even when Chung, who I have found cringe-worthy so many times, I stopped counting twenty years ago, asks him completely stupid or insensitive questions. He just has his priorities fully straight. Mucho respect to Gene. And I hope he is ok, we know he too battled cancer (I hate that word more than I can say) a while back and I have really only heard and dismissed rumors about him in the last decade or so.
@@griffinmathers929 I had stage 4 uterine cancer a yr after gilda was diagnosed in fact a yr to the very day...had a hysterectomy at age 26 and have been cancer free since then it wasnt a complete hysterectomy as I still have my ovaries the tumor was contained in the uterus I didnt even need chemo or anything after the operation....some people are luckier than others I suppose...rip gilda radner
I can relate to Gene Wilder so much. I lost the love of my life February of this year. I have seen interviews with him recently & it's just written all over his face that he misses & love her still very much. Even after so many years, he still hurts from losing her. I know I'll probably be the same way.
Sadly, too many doctors don't take women seriously. My gf had a 21 centimeter ovarian tumor and was misdiagnosed THREE times before they finally did an ultrasound. First she was just "tired and stressed", then it was Crohn's disease. Finally she was correctly diagnosed, but they couldn't say whether it was cancer for another month until the surgery. The stress was intense while we waited and saw other docs who blamed HER for not getting PAP smears. Luckily, it was benign but she lost an ovary. I kept thinking of Gilda's story, which was eerily similar in terms of misdiagnosis and being brushed off by doctors. Her book was really terrifying but very touching and informative.
I’m very sorry to hear about the strenuous process your girlfriend and you had endure. Such stressful times :/ How is she doing now? My stepmom couldn’t eat or drink and had some headaches and stomachache so she went to ER and got X rays to which she was sent home. A second ER visit with persistence from our family to give her a scab of her esophagus was able to have doctors detect a mass with a 95% likelihood of stomach cancer. Took them 3 diagnoses with 3 doctors within three months to finally confirm. By that time, her symptoms worsened and time seemed to be running out. Her cancer spread to her lymph nodes and ovaries and back. Her feeding tube soon became infected which caused her belly to be severely infected and enflamed to which chemotherapy was discontinued recently. My family and I are finding alternatives ourselves to treat the infection and cancer. We are praying and hopeful everyday for her recovery 🙏🏼

Gene is such a genius when he describes his wife(Gilda Radner) and how she raised awareness about ovarian cancer. When he says, "I just wish that Gilda herself had been one of the people who had read about, "Gilda's disease" and could have benefited from it!!!", this just goes to show how in tune Wilder is. All of my love to two very bright souls who repeatedly made me laugh, in fact I think Radner was the first female comic who made me laugh out loud, and after that the barre was set very high. My ex went through something similar. She felt tired, moody & foggy in the head...lots of bloating & eventually she had to pull over to vomit one day. Twice the doctors told her it was either just depression or Crohn's disease (which she doesn't have). On the third try, they found a 22cm tumor on her ovary. Thankfully it wasn't cancerous, but Gilda's book kept swirling in my mind during the whole ordeal. I was convinced she was dying. She lost her ovary but thankfully that was all. Doctors need to take women's symptoms seriously & be thorough with their diagnostic tests.
Today on Utube I read a comment by some young person who said, "Who the f*ck is Gilda Radner?" I felt sorry for that idiot. Mostly because, if he knew the person he was speaking of so rudely, he'd feel like shit. She was my first crush when I was 9 years old. I didn't ask my parents if I could stay up late to watch SNL. I'd ask them if I could stay up and watch Roseanna Roseannadanna. RIP GR

Well, part of being a human being and not a bitter sad sack is understanding that we are all different. We all have different heroes and enjoy different entertainers. Gilda was and is a comedy icon, but unfortunately, most of what she did was on SNL, and NBC is notoriously stingy with allowing clips from their show. She died when I was 20, and I had seen her on SNL, remember some of her stuff like it was yesterday, but then I think, how do I remember when I always had to go to bed before SNL came on? :) So I don't even know how I got to see her, but I'm really glad I did. Being funny saved my life, pretty literally, in the years I was bullied, and I feel like I knew I was funny or that I could be, largely because of women like Gilda who just would go to the outer reaches of sanity and come back with hilarity.
My friend had ovarian cancer at 20 years old. The doctors said she would never have children after treatment. She got married 3-4 years later and had a son. The cancer returned. My friend was treated again. My friend had a daughter and a partial hysterectomy. Ovarian cancer can effect a woman that young. She survive, but was so sick. My friend would come to work looking really sick and weak. I don't know how my friend could work 10 hours. All I can say to my friend is Go Lila!
Could not disagree more. How strong, and loving your friend is, Twigra, to keep going, to be brave enough to find love and to be a mother despite all she's gone through and her all to personal knowledge that there are no guarantees in life. No one in the gene pool is completely immune to cancer risk and I'll put it this way...there are many in my family with kidney issues but I'm happy to be here and living the best life that I can even knowing I may be ill in the future than not to be here at all. If only people in perfect health were allowed to have children we'd all be extinct. Research and early detection are the way to go....judgement won't get anyone anywhere.
Wilder was able to do so much good with his outlook being that she was no longer suffering. Some wonderful charitable work to help combat the disease and help others .
You know I didn't realize that it was way back in 1988 that Gilda died, but all these years I've remembered her appearance on that show, or maybe it was another one, where she was SO happy that she had beaten cancer, and had her arms up in triumph, and then the sadness of finding out that it was a mistake-there was no remission. All these years I remembered it......it was so sad. RIP Gilda and Gene........
I didn't know Garry was gone! So this year we say goodbye to Doris Roberts, Gene Wilder.....Peter Doyle died awhile back.....Robin Williams, gone far too young.....Robert Culp died a couple years back .....Robin Williams had some kind of dementia. And poor Gene Wilder, Alzhimers......When I hear Gene speaking of Gilda 'writhing in pain' I WISH so much that people were made comfortable when they are sick and dying, even if it means they go a little sooner. Hopefully Gene and Gilda are together now in a better place........

I was reading an interview with Jane Curtin the other day and she talked about how Gilda admired Jane's marriage and the regular mundane days with her husband. She remarked how happy it made Gilda to then meet and marry Gene. Good couples don't come along too often.
Ladies, if you ever have the symptoms indicated in the video (check any reputable medical site online for a list of symptoms), just ask for a pelvic exam - to feel your ovaries - and a transvaginal ultrasound at the very least. They place a wand (for the lack of a better word) into the vagina to view your ovaries. It's safe and painless. I've had it done when I had ovarian cyst problems in the past.The CA-125 blood test, by itself, is not a good indicator of the presence of ovarian cancer, because it can result in false positives due to other conditions, especially in premenopausal women. It's generally ordered for ovarian cancer patients to detect disease response to treatment or reoccurrence. However, it may be requested by your doctor if a pelvic exam, ultrasound or other imaging tests that may be performed show the need for it.
It's amazing.... she didn't want to do that Garry Shandling appearance at first, because she thought that no one in the audience would remember who she was. Instead, when she walked out unannounced, the entire audience gave her a standing ovation.
My sister had the same thing, no one believed her until her cancer was inoperable. She was treated with radiation and chemo, which destroyed her intestines so that she had most of them removed. She did survive for almost 20 years before the cancer came back, but she was ill and in pain for all of those years. Why won't doctors LISTEN to women?
I had ovarian cancer Stage II C in 1999 - 2000. I was out of work for a year. I found out when I found a lump in my pubic area and asked my Tui Na practitioner what it was. He said it was a tumor and that I needed to have it looked at right away. Because of persistence and grace, two weeks later I was getting a hysterectomy. Next, I got chemotherapy. My doctor said, "You have a chance if you can get through the first three rounds with only three weeks in between." I did it. I also was told that exercising at least 1/2 hour every day would help the odds. I walked and did Chi Gong for ovarian cancer and did homeopathy with the doctor of the President of India and took herbs and had psychotherapy and went to a spiritual healer and my brothers came out to stay with me. There are many tales that could be told, but all that is necessary is I survived.

I do miss her so much, my husband has passed away from cancer due to Ageant Orange from Vietnam... friendly fire 🔥... and the government didn't tell him that he had been exposed to it when he was in phenom phen, Vietnam so as far as the lawsuit he wasn't in on receiving compensation, so sad because tho it took,40 years he passed away from the Vietnam war...he gave his life for everyone in America...I was married to him for one week shy of 42 years. He's been gone for 5 years now and I miss my soulmate.
My best friend died of ovarian cancer after 2 years. The only sign she had was bloating in the stomach area. Her clothes would not fit her anymore. She ended up having surgery where they removed her female organs and scrapped every lining clean. Yet she still died at a young age to me. 6 months before she died we went to Scotland and Ireland and she climbed Blarney castle and toured a lot of castles and seemed fine as he PSA was under 35. Then we got home and her count keep climbing. I visited with her all thew time but then 5 months later and noticed her eyelid was really drooping but she thought it was and infection. But then started to forget words. So I contacted her adult daughter who took her to a doctor and then a hospital where they discovered she had a brain aneurysm , so they did surgery and found out the her ovarian cancer had spread to her brain and she died 4 weeks later. Still today I miss her so much. I had her read Gilda's book "its always something" And she enjoyed it but thought she had beat it. Very bad disease.
I agree with you Phil. Gene, never again, seemed to be the same. I believe, that he truly loved Gilda and she, truly loved Gene. Someday...they will be reunited.
What Gene said about wishing Gilda could have read and benefit from reading about Gildas disease reminds me of a quote from a de-motivational poster i once saw.... “It may be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others” It had an image of a sinking ship among jagged rocks. Its unfortunate, but i think she became the lighthouse for us all.
Gilda was a tough act to follow, it makes sense that SNL has had trouble finding someone like her because they can't. She was unique among funny people in a way that is archetypal and irreplaceable. The kind of natural talent that poured from this gifted human being can never be duplicated because she was organically gifted and not created from a mold.

Gryffindor Geek Gene was happily married for 25 years to Karen Boyer until his death from Alzheimer’s in 2016. It’s disrespectful to his widow to say he and Gilda are now reunited as if their marriage meant nothing. Karen was the true love of his life.
They were comedy's super couple. They were awesome caring lovely people....sorry Gene, you still are. Loved Gilda and it still gets me teary to see this. Loved every minute of the two of you. You were always so uplifting and made everyone happy and feel good. I could see Gilda for 10 minutes and she'd be on my mind for weeks afterward. I'd always smile thinking of her and still do.
As I type my mother is dying in hospice from stage IV colon cancer, only wish I knew what and how to prevent it. Love my mom ,love Gilda and Gene, please people,something doesn't feel right get checked out. Many people depend on us and it hurts us all when someone we love dies from something as horrible as cancer,God Bless all of you.

Just reading more about her story. She is died way to young.... 42 of ovarian cancer. An oncologist spoke about her case and said it should have been detected and treated way sooner as she had a mother and aunt with cancer. All the signs were there... doctors blew the diagnosis until it was too late. They just weren't aggressive enough back then

How ridiculous that you think you know who he "thinks of when you say soul mate." I am glad he was able to get on with life but no one but him knows such things. That aside... This case will always steam me so, because her death was hastened by incompetent/uncaring doctors, which we also experienced plenty of when the woman I loved dealt with the same...and we went to the most highly-rated cancer centers in the world. Trust me: our biggest problem w/healthcare isn't cost; it's incompetence.
my mother had breast cancer two years ago, luckily she found it in its early stages so it hadn't spread through her body. She recovered and has been cancer free since. What happened to Gilda was sad and unfortunate, but what Gene Wilder should think is 'Would Gilda want me to spend the rest of my life sad and depressed?'
We know even more now than we knew in the 80's and the 90's especially in families that carry the gene that predisposes them to having ovarian and breast cancer. Sweet Gilda's death brought about a huge awareness of this deadly disease. Families that carry the gene can be monitored and even have surgery before it has a chance to develop. Angelina Jolie is a prime example of this.
I had a friend who died of it at 26. She had just gotten married and she started to get sick on their honeymoon. She thought she was pregnant. The saddest funeral i have ever been to. Her mother who also was dying had to come by ambulance on a strecher. She wanted to be there. Her sister jumped on her casket (closed) and cried my baby my baby. She was the youngest. I saw men taking off. This happened around the same time Gilda past away.

Just remember, ladies, pap smears do not detect ovarian cancer. Be sure though to get a pap smear regularly for cervical cancer.

My ex went through something similar. She felt tired, moody & foggy in the head...lots of bloating & eventually she had to pull over to vomit one day. Twice the doctors told her it was either just depression or Crohn's disease (which she doesn't have). On the third try, they found a 22cm tumor on her ovary. Thankfully it wasn't cancerous, but Gilda's book kept swirling in my mind during the whole ordeal. I was convinced she was dying. She lost her ovary but thankfully that was all.
Doctors need to take women's symptoms seriously & be thorough with their diagnostic tests.
A history of medical malfeasance regarding women. So 😥.sad.

Today on Utube I read a comment by some young person who said, "Who the f*ck is Gilda Radner?" I felt sorry for that idiot. Mostly because, if he knew the person he was speaking of so rudely, he'd feel like shit.
She was my first crush when I was 9 years old. I didn't ask my parents if I could stay up late to watch SNL. I'd ask them if I could stay up and watch Roseanna Roseannadanna. RIP GR

Well, part of being a human being and not a bitter sad sack is understanding that we are all different. We all have different heroes and enjoy different entertainers. Gilda was and is a comedy icon, but unfortunately, most of what she did was on SNL, and NBC is notoriously stingy with allowing clips from their show. She died when I was 20, and I had seen her on SNL, remember some of her stuff like it was yesterday, but then I think, how do I remember when I always had to go to bed before SNL came on? :) So I don't even know how I got to see her, but I'm really glad I did. Being funny saved my life, pretty literally, in the years I was bullied, and I feel like I knew I was funny or that I could be, largely because of women like Gilda who just would go to the outer reaches of sanity and come back with hilarity.

My friend had ovarian cancer at 20 years old. The doctors said she would never have children after treatment. She got married 3-4 years later and had a son. The cancer returned. My friend was treated again. My friend had a daughter and a partial hysterectomy. Ovarian cancer can effect a woman that young. She survive, but was so sick. My friend would come to work looking really sick and weak. I don't know how my friend could work 10 hours. All I can say to my friend is Go Lila!

Could not disagree more. How strong, and loving your friend is, Twigra, to keep going, to be brave enough to find love and to be a mother despite all she's gone through and her all to personal knowledge that there are no guarantees in life. No one in the gene pool is completely immune to cancer risk and I'll put it this way...there are many in my family with kidney issues but I'm happy to be here and living the best life that I can even knowing I may be ill in the future than not to be here at all. If only people in perfect health were allowed to have children we'd all be extinct. Research and early detection are the way to go....judgement won't get anyone anywhere.

You know I didn't realize that it was way back in 1988 that Gilda died, but all these years I've remembered her appearance on that show, or maybe it was another one, where she was SO happy that she had beaten cancer, and had her arms up in triumph, and then the sadness of finding out that it was a mistake-there was no remission. All these years I remembered it......it was so sad. RIP Gilda and Gene........

I didn't know Garry was gone! So this year we say goodbye to Doris Roberts, Gene Wilder.....Peter Doyle died awhile back.....Robin Williams, gone far too young.....Robert Culp died a couple years back .....Robin Williams had some kind of dementia. And poor Gene Wilder, Alzhimers......When I hear Gene speaking of Gilda 'writhing in pain' I WISH so much that people were made comfortable when they are sick and dying, even if it means they go a little sooner. Hopefully Gene and Gilda are together now in a better place........

Robert Levasseur I think he is, too, Robert. I had just posted a picture of him today on my facebook page. He is 82 now. He's a great man, just like Gilda was a great woman. Too sad their time together was so short.
I was reading an interview with Jane Curtin the other day and she talked about how Gilda admired Jane's marriage and the regular mundane days with her husband. She remarked how happy it made Gilda to then meet and marry Gene. Good couples don't come along too often.
Ladies, if you ever have the symptoms indicated in the video (check any reputable medical site online for a list of symptoms), just ask for a pelvic exam - to feel your ovaries - and a transvaginal ultrasound at the very least. They place a wand (for the lack of a better word) into the vagina to view your ovaries. It's safe and painless. I've had it done when I had ovarian cyst problems in the past.The CA-125 blood test, by itself, is not a good indicator of the presence of ovarian cancer, because it can result in false positives due to other conditions, especially in premenopausal women. It's generally ordered for ovarian cancer patients to detect disease response to treatment or reoccurrence. However, it may be requested by your doctor if a pelvic exam, ultrasound or other imaging tests that may be performed show the need for it.
When I was a kid, Gilda "Roseanna Roseannadana" was on SNL. I miss that crazy show but More I miss Gilda. It's so sad to have lost her this way :(
It's amazing.... she didn't want to do that Garry Shandling appearance at first, because she thought that no one in the audience would remember who she was. Instead, when she walked out unannounced, the entire audience gave her a standing ovation.
My sister had the same thing, no one believed her until her cancer was inoperable. She was treated with radiation and chemo, which destroyed her intestines so that she had most of them removed. She did survive for almost 20 years before the cancer came back, but she was ill and in pain for all of those years. Why won't doctors LISTEN to women?

I had ovarian cancer Stage II C in 1999 - 2000. I was out of work for a year. I found out when I found a lump in my pubic area and asked my Tui Na practitioner what it was. He said it was a tumor and that I needed to have it looked at right away. Because of persistence and grace, two weeks later I was getting a hysterectomy. Next, I got chemotherapy. My doctor said, "You have a chance if you can get through the first three rounds with only three weeks in between." I did it. I also was told that exercising at least 1/2 hour every day would help the odds. I walked and did Chi Gong for ovarian cancer and did homeopathy with the doctor of the President of India and took herbs and had psychotherapy and went to a spiritual healer and my brothers came out to stay with me. There are many tales that could be told, but all that is necessary is I survived.

I do miss her so much, my husband has passed away from cancer due to Ageant Orange from Vietnam... friendly fire 🔥... and the government didn't tell him that he had been exposed to it when he was in phenom phen, Vietnam so as far as the lawsuit he wasn't in on receiving compensation, so sad because tho it took,40 years he passed away from the Vietnam war...he gave his life for everyone in America...I was married to him for one week shy of 42 years. He's been gone for 5 years now and I miss my soulmate.
My best friend died of ovarian cancer after 2 years. The only sign she had was bloating in the stomach area. Her clothes would not fit her anymore. She ended up having surgery where they removed her female organs and scrapped every lining clean. Yet she still died at a young age to me. 6 months before she died we went to Scotland and Ireland and she climbed Blarney castle and toured a lot of castles and seemed fine as he PSA was under 35. Then we got home and her count keep climbing. I visited with her all thew time but then 5 months later and noticed her eyelid was really drooping but she thought it was and infection. But then started to forget words. So I contacted her adult daughter who took her to a doctor and then a hospital where they discovered she had a brain aneurysm , so they did surgery and found out the her ovarian cancer had spread to her brain and she died 4 weeks later. Still today I miss her so much. I had her read Gilda's book "its always something" And she enjoyed it but thought she had beat it. Very bad disease.

I agree with you Phil. Gene, never again, seemed to be the same. I believe, that he truly loved Gilda and she, truly loved Gene. Someday...they will be reunited.

What Gene said about wishing Gilda could have read and benefit from reading about Gildas disease reminds me of a quote from a de-motivational poster i once saw.... “It may be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others” It had an image of a sinking ship among jagged rocks. Its unfortunate, but i think she became the lighthouse for us all.

Gilda was a tough act to follow, it makes sense that SNL has had trouble finding someone like her because they can't. She was unique among funny people in a way that is archetypal and irreplaceable. The kind of natural talent that poured from this gifted human being can never be duplicated because she was organically gifted and not created from a mold.

Gryffindor Geek Gene was happily married for 25 years to Karen Boyer until his death from Alzheimer’s in 2016. It’s disrespectful to his widow to say he and Gilda are now reunited as if their marriage meant nothing. Karen was the true love of his life.
They were comedy's super couple. They were awesome caring lovely people....sorry Gene, you still are. Loved Gilda and it still gets me teary to see this. Loved every minute of the two of you. You were always so uplifting and made everyone happy and feel good. I could see Gilda for 10 minutes and she'd be on my mind for weeks afterward. I'd always smile thinking of her and still do.
The medical "profession " not only dropped the ball, but were criminally implicit in her death. She died in a lot of pain For No Reason.
The sad part is that a decade later, Gene Wilder lost his great leading lady, the incomparable Madeline Kahn, to ovarian cancer as well.

As I type my mother is dying in hospice from stage IV colon cancer, only wish I knew what and how to prevent it. Love my mom ,love Gilda and Gene, please people,something doesn't feel right get checked out. Many people depend on us and it hurts us all when someone we love dies from something as horrible as cancer,God Bless all of you.
@sarahsmith182 Mr. Wilder was trying to say that even though they went through everything they did, they still had a great time because they made each other smile and laugh, even through the pain. Which made it the best time of his life.They made memories, they didn't wait for them to be made.

Just reading more about her story. She is died way to young.... 42 of ovarian cancer. An oncologist spoke about her case and said it should have been detected and treated way sooner as she had a mother and aunt with cancer. All the signs were there... doctors blew the diagnosis until it was too late. They just weren't aggressive enough back then

This case will always steam me so, because her death was hastened by incompetent/uncaring doctors, which we also experienced plenty of when the woman I loved dealt with the same...and we went to the most highly-rated cancer centers in the world. Trust me: our biggest problem w/healthcare isn't cost; it's incompetence.
my mother had breast cancer two years ago, luckily she found it in its early stages so it hadn't spread through her body. She recovered and has been cancer free since. What happened to Gilda was sad and unfortunate, but what Gene Wilder should think is 'Would Gilda want me to spend the rest of my life sad and depressed?'
We know even more now than we knew in the 80's and the 90's especially in families that carry the gene that predisposes them to having ovarian and breast cancer. Sweet Gilda's death brought about a huge awareness of this deadly disease. Families that carry the gene can be monitored and even have surgery before it has a chance to develop. Angelina Jolie is a prime example of this.

I had a friend who died of it at 26. She had just gotten married and she started to get sick on their honeymoon. She thought she was pregnant. The saddest funeral i have ever been to. Her mother who also was dying had to come by ambulance on a strecher. She wanted to be there. Her sister jumped on her casket (closed) and cried my baby my baby. She was the youngest. I saw men taking off. This happened around the same time Gilda past away.
