Do the clamps have to be separated a certain distance

Yes. The ones closest to the edge should go as far as possible while the two inside ones should be 2/3's of the way from the ends

Thanks for the message, Lion. This is an aluminum hard top cover that latches from the inside. So as long as you have a locking tailgate your cargo will be secure.
