I went to Monaco last week. It’s really difficult to follow the track layout on a normal day without the barriers and grandstands we are used to see at TV, you really can get lost there.
I think that’s the point, to avoid people getting ideas

@@cristian9365 aaah thx, in hindsight it’s now pretty obvious, because the race isn’t really allowing overtaking on Monaco the race is actually already „done“ by the qualifying and the resulting positions as you mentioned 🙂 I thought too complicated
I was here for the race this year. No joke, they were faster during the installation lap than the actual race 😬
By the way you cheekily took the racing line a couple of times, it's easy to tell a big F1 fan!

There is also a statue of William Grover-Williams, the 1st winner of the Monaco GP back in 1929. At 0:34 on the right side, under the grand stand. And another at 2:20 on the right, it's not a particular driver / car. Just a random F1 from the late 90's / early '00
If this session could be removed during the race, cars would enter the straight with more speed. There could be more overtaking...

Drove round Monaco after the GP in 93...I was doing literally 30mph tops...these guys are doing 80/90 round there...the margin for error is non existant...RESPECT to the drivers who do it...

3:25 If I remember correctly, this corner was present on older layouts of Monaco dating back to the 50s
To be precise. There was 3 variations of the chicane
1929 - 1971 : 2 corners left / right. Same location as the curent chicane (3:09 on the video)
1972 : same 2 corners left / right. but 300m ahead. Like at 3:25 on the video. The chicane was relocated just the year because they use the road on the left (sea side) as the pit lane because there was working on the new pit lane / swiming pool road.
1973 - 1985 : same as 1929-1971
Since 1986 : 4 corners left / right / right left

That was about as interesting as watching the race. Well done on the footage though, it was good to see what it is really like when not a race track. Unfortunately, the cars have well and truly outgrown this racetrack and so they should move on to something much bigger and better.

LOL they havent figured out to make the middle line yellow in Europe yet? How do you tell if you are on a one way road? What do you do when you go somewhere new? Do you just drive down streets hoping someone doesnt come at you?
Hope, pray, and use your eyes to see if somebody is coming.
Road signs tell you. We use yellow lines during roadworks to overrule the white ones temporarily, by the way

I wonder how the emergency services operate when the formula 1 circus comes to town. Say, there’s a fire at the palace, or police are called to a domestic that happens to be on the other side of town. How would that work?
I'd wager for situations like that, they probably have alternate routes planned out, or even if they don't, they probably have helicopters or something to get around quickly
