- Flanders Field American Cemetery is the only World War I American military cemetery located in Belgium.
The 6.2-acre cemetery in western Belgium holds the graves of 368 American dead from the Great War.
Their headstones are aligned in four symmetrical areas around the white stone chapel that stands in the center of the cemetery. Inside are the engraved names of 43 service members missing in action.
Graceful trees and shrubbery frame the burial area and screen it from passing traffic. At the ends of the paths leading to three of the corners of the cemetery are circular retreats, with benches and urns.
The American Battle Monuments Commission also manages two World War II cemeteries in Belgium - Ardennes American Cemetery and Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery.
The ABMC honors America's fallen service members and their stories at 26 overseas cemeteries and 32 monuments.

I was there today and I can tell you (I am not a sensitive!) but many of the soldiers died so close to the END of the Great War! What person wouldn’t be angry with a terrible war ending in 10 days!!!
However, the cemetery is laid out beautifully. And even during WW2 the locals cared for our American Soldiers!
It is really too bad that we as Americans have so many of these cemeteries all over the World to erase the Evil & Tyranny that existed more than once in some places!
it makes sense that they died late in the war offcourse, America joined the war in 1917 after all
but what may interest you is how involved they were in Belgium after the war and before joining, starting with defying the Brittish blockade to bring relief aid to Belgian kids, this lead to a tense situation with the Brittish which could have potentially ended in war with the Brittish had the latter not been wise enough not to push their luck at that time. (in all honesty some of the food did get ceised by the germans, but they in turn were smart enough not to push their luck with the americans either, it saved many childrens lives and pictures of schoolkids with banners thanking the americans are still around.
after the war american philantropists funded reconstruction of the Leuven university and especially it's library, (German soldiers burned it down along with thousands of medieval manuscripts, incunables and countless other rare texts now lost. Germany was ordered to replace a portion of these but offcourse they could only offer German historical texts, most of which were the more mundane and allready well studied ones, many probably later copies to but it was more about sending a message
and above the doorway they wrote in latin "destroyed by German fury, rebuilt with American money" but this was removed only a couple years after as it was deemed to hostile to germans

Small, but very well maintained War cemetary,. Just came back from visiting it. The info center is small, but also very interesting,
My great uncle fought it he muses Argonne offensive and other battles with the Illinois national guard infantry wounded 3 times returned home Did not live long after the war died 1926 a young man the war killed him after it was over
