I'm in recovery from addiction. Been in recovery for about 5 years now. I'm also an atheist. I finally got clean when I hit rock bottom. The withdrawls were so intense that my plan was to unalive by throwing myself off a bridge when I finally ran out of money/support. I had to decide that my life was worth living and worth fighting for.
You know what didn't help at all? Any god or religion. In fact it was a HUGE obstacle to my recovery. I live in NE Ohio where AA was founded, it's really big here. ALL of the sober living houses are religious, they require church attendance and mandatory bible studies. All of the inpatient rehabs are also religious. I tried going to meetings but they told me I'd end up dead or institutionalized because I wouldn't give my life over to a 'higher power' (it's always Jesus lol) that I didn't believe in. They refused to help me because I wouldn't join their cult.
I finally found outpatient treatment and some meeting that were based more on volunteering and giving back then just religion, even tho it was still VERY religious. At every meeting there was someone who always said god was the 'only' way- which is super annoying when you are trying to do it on your own. Everyone else was handed a literal how to book while I had to figure it out by myself.
Fortunately I did. Today I work in a medical field where I deal with patient care, many of whom have either addictions or mental illness. I have a psychology degree, which doesn't increase my income but is still super helpful. My coworkers often come to me to deal with difficult patients because I'm so good at it.
I also have an amazing partner and my family supporting me. My life isn't perfect, I'm pretty broke most of the time but I'm killing it.
What I hate the most about religious recovery like AA and bible based treatments is it takes away all your hard work. Anything good you did- NOPE. God did it. You are totally powerless and god did it all for you. But anytime you slip or f^ck up that's on YOU. It's so toxic. Being in recovery is the hardest thing I've ever done. I completely changed my life. ME. It was SO HARD. But I put in the work, did so much therapy, got my mental health & meds sorted, exercised and got healthy etc. It was literally the hardest thing I ever did. And I refuse to give that away to something that I have no evidence even exists. I am NOT powerless, I am POWERFUL.
Sorry but that caller can suck it. I'm glad he got better, but he (and working 2nd shift plus overtime) is why I don't go to meeting anymore. I'm so sick of all the credit for my work being taken away and given to some bullsh^t fake deadbeat dad that only shows up when I do something sexual it doesn't like, or take it's name in vain lol. It wasn't there when I was in active addiction, withdrawl, OR in recovery. I was.

Congratulations on your recovery. Here in California, we have the option of going to A.A. with religion, and A.A. without religion. I was rather disappointed when A.A. without religion still pushes the core belief that you are broken and in need of a higher power. They allow you to pick your own higher power. So, I went with Gandalf. Unfortunately, they still used the book Alchoholics Anonymous, written by a prosetylizer and womanizer. Wikepedia has a nice bit on him. The 12 step programs are just a sneaky way to push religion, like church charity. And, they are not very effective, there are better programs that are secular.

That toxic relationship is why I STRONGLY disagree with the major religions _not_ being referred to as "cults". In this case, it's appalling that the underlying ethos is that EVERYONE is permanently, and unrecoverably monstrous (so much so that we are deserving of _ETERNAL TORTURE),_ and that no matter how hard you work at something, it's not you who did the good thing, that was God's doing. 🤮
It's mind boggling that people think that you need to adopt this "irrevocably broken" mindset in order to recover.

It's a scary thing to realize you, and only you, can have control and power over your life. Little kids come up with imaginary friends, have stuffed animals, or dolls. They are told to believe in Santa, Easter bunnies, tooth fairies, etc. At some point the kids stop believing in those things because they don't make sense.

There is 2 parachutes, one of them is packed badly, you have to pick one. Faith is asking god which one to pick and then choosing one based on a sign you need to interpret. An evidence based decision is asking someone who professionally packs parachutes all day to have a quick look and tell you which parachute seems to be packed better. The better packed parachute might STILL not deploy, but the second decision is still not "based on faith", it's based on examinable evidence. There is also a reason parachutes have "a backup parachute", it's because we know that even under perfect conditions, something can still go wrong, ie we never have an exact 100% trust.

Consider this: when hosts assign callers homework-asking them to research a topic they were uninformed or misinformed about, or leaving them with a question to ponder before calling back-what percentage do you think actually follow through?
Based on the numerous calls I've listened to, especially from repeat callers, my estimate is only about 20%. There are only a handful of instances where callers review their previous discussions or thoroughly research a topic that was beyond their understanding. Many callers seem to rely on the hosts to answer all their pressing questions. When dissatisfied with the answers, they often deflect to another topic or question, especially when they're cornered by a logical argument. This pattern underscores a reluctance to engage deeply with challenging concepts and to seek out information independently.

I think the problem is that religions ultimately restrict seeking knowledge. This because they make unsubstantiated claims and seeking knowledge can undermine those claims by showing them to be false.
Religions essentially fall back on: Believe what we say to believe, do what we say to do.

Next time someone asks, "what's the harm? I have everything to gain and nothing to lose by believing without evidence...". Just show them this.
Nothing to lose? This person has lost their ability to think clearly, to empathize or love without threats and dire consequences, to evaluate evidence uniformly, to have confidence in himself to overcome addiction without a crutch that cannot be demonstrated to even be real, and to be honest in the face of challenges to the tenuous things accepted with crap evidence.
This is the harm. It damages your psyche so deeply that if you question it and it inevitably crumbles apart if you ever decide to be honest, all of these things that make up the bulk of your identity come undone along with it.. You essentially have to relearn all these basic things and learn how exist as a person in REALITY.
The flood, evolution, etc.... These are all things that were told to him to prop up the crap reason to believe in the first place. But they want you to FEEL like it makes sense, it doesn't have to actually make sense. Look at all these crazy things you have to sacrifice and cling to for this "harmless belief" for fear of losing your identity. Please... tell me again how harmless it is....
It's truly sad to listen to. Where another Christian hears a godly, devout individual.... We see it for what it is. A really damaged person who never got the help they actually needed and is perpetually being told that faith and these very things that are damaging him mentally and making him talk like an emotional toddler with an equivalent epistemology and scientific knowledge, are the things that he should strive for to become a good person in the eyes of a being who can't even be shown to exist. What an evil fucking religion that turns people into this.

Why is it atheist can't comprehend the meaning of evidence.
Anyway there is some things people believe in faith that have horrific consequences like the idea your child is born with a brain of a different gender in their body. Atheist humanist seem to adopt this faith-based belief recently.
Atheists have a lot of faith-based beliefs like the idea their ancestors were sea creatures. Some also believe in the supernatural aka the idea of the origins of Life came into existence without God.
Atheism requires no evidence it requires no logic it doesn't even require the ability to think it's a disbelief. If you replaced the brain of somebody who believed in God with a rock and you did the same thing with an atheist you would end up with two atheists because neither one of them would have the ability or willingness to accept God if they had a rock in their head instead of a brain

One who is responsible may listen to another's proposition but they don't give a cart blanche open mind. They have some standards of coherence, evidence, and conciliance that must be met before they think of something as true. There are two kinds of faith: reality-based faith, and faith-based faith. Reality-based faith is merely recognizing that reality is consistent with itself, so it's the most reasonable variety of faith. Faith-based faith boils down to believing what you're told just because someone said so. If it were consistent with objective reality, it would be reality-based faith, but because it is not, it can only be faith-based faith. And that's essentially the same as gullibility.

      - KNEW exactly what would happen ("all is according to God's plan")
      - KNEW that he could even say goodbye to his buddies and give them last instructions.
What happened to such a Jesus?
A day of inconvenience, 3 days of timeout, and then he went back to where devout christians cannot wait to get, and there he gets the best place.
How lucky that suicide is forbidden in christianity, otherwise millions of christians woulf kill themselves in the moment they think all their sins were forgiven and they surely go to Heaven.
After Muhammad's revelation "When you give your life in the name of Allah (i.e. die going to war for me), you will go into paradise immediately and have 72 virgins for you" was VERY successful. even the pope has a revelation that dying for God in the crusades brought you into Heaven (skipping the virgins).
And this shortcut to Salvation has run halfway out of fashion, luckily.
No, that was not a sacrifice for Jesus - that was a small inconvenience. Compared to the sure eternal Heaven, anyhow irrelevant.
I always thought that a Jesus that knew he was mortal, that that was his ONLY life, that all would be over when he died,
but was so persuaded by the importance of his new ideas that he rather gave his ONLY life than betray his ideas,
that such a Jesus would be WAY more impressive, way and his teachings more relevant.
Any soldier who sacrifices himself to save his comrades, or was captured and tortured and does not betray his comrades
is more impress ive to me.
You are only so keen because Jeus is a superstar with superpowers. You admire his powers, and as he is the supposed judge about eternal torture (and according to the Commandments, envying your neighbour's belongings is just as severe as murder), one better keept at good odds with him.
Many US christians long for the rapture, they want this world to end asap to get to Heaven, as they pais dearly to their preacher to receive the guarantee that their place in Heaven is booked.
I am baptized as catholic, in my country you have 10 years of religious lessions of your confession in school, NEVER heard we the hysterical fundamentalist ideas that US christians so love.

'Faith' can mean a number of different things, which causes some confusion. There is the idea in some religious circles that belief in God is reasonable. Where the faith comes in is being prepared to rely on and trust in God.
The idea of just taking things on faith, on the other hand, is really the issue under discussion here. The problem is that that's quite arbitrary. Why believe in Christianity rather than something else? The reasons tend to be either cultural, personal, or both, none of which provide any reasonable indication of how likely it is to be true. I grew up in a Christian household in a mainly Christian culture. What does that have to do with the ultimate source and purpose of existence? Nothing at all, as far as anyone can reasonably infer!

The thing here is that recovering addicts feel an indescribable change -- they truly cannot fathom how they went from their former hopelessly dead-end/get smashed everyday psyche to consistently sober. This transformation is so profound to the extent that it truly feels like the hand of God MUSTve done it. A non-addict will never understand this type of experience that feels tantamount to a downright MIRACULOUS experience. An addict is wired different.
Im one and like you seem to convey here, I eventually understood that everything is on me, and I have taken accountability for my actions, processed the factors involved, and made it out of my horrendously dark past reality. Yet, I still wake up on somedays absolutely dumbfounded by my new sobriety. Importantly, Im always infinetly more vulnerable than others to relapse and Im constantly on gaurd. It gets exhausting, and Id love it if there was a God that helped me out in this effort. I think this is why people like this make believe and reap the benefits associated with lesser exhaustion as a consequence.

GOD DOES NOT ACTUALLY EXIST EXCEPT FOR AS A CONCEPT:
For those who claim God actually exists (besides as a concept), consider the following:
    a. An actual eternally existent absolute somethingness truly existing.
    b. An actual eternally existent absolute somethingness that has consciousness, memories and thoughts truly existing.
People who claim God actually and eternally exists basically are claiming that 'b' above is correct but yet simultaneously seem to be saying that 'a' is impossible to occur.
'a' above can exist without 'b' existing but 'b' cannot exist unless 'a' exists. Even per the scientific principal of Occam's razor, 'a' is more probable of being really true rather than 'b'.
I am one step away from proving God's existence, but am unable to find any actual evidence to do so. And nobody I've talked to seems to have any actual evidence of God's actual existence either. All humans appear to have are 'Theories of God'. Some humans appear to go their whole life basing their life upon their specific theory of God. Many give their God human characteristics and cannot even prove the existence of their God much less the characteristics given to their God. Some have circumstantial arguments for a God's existence, but others have circumstantial arguments for no God existing. Not one has any actual factual evidence that their God actually factually even exists. Hence, at this time in the analysis, God does not actually exist except for as a concept created by humans for humans. Humans have personified Nature and called that personification "God". Instead of what is claimed "God created man in God's image", it's more likely that "Man created God in Man's image".
Further consider that if the emotional parts of the brain override the logic and reasoning parts of the brain, people can be made to believe basically anything at all as being really true. It has also been scientifically proven that the brain makes up stuff to 'fill in the blanks' of it's perceived reality. Technology is often needed to perceive items that are outside of the human senses' capabilities. Plus modern science has already proven that humans can have visual and audio hallucinations that are very real to that individual. All the more reason for critical thinking being needed and to follow the facts wherever those facts might lead. Some people for some reason (social conditioning/brainwashing/wishful thinking) even believe in future eternity without end but do not accept eternity past with no beginning.
In addition, while modern science does not know what consciousness actually is yet, memories and thoughts appear to require a physical correctly functioning brain to have those items occur. Where is God's brain? Where are God's memories stored at? How are God's memories stored and retrieved? How does God think even a single coherent thought?
If inside of this space time dimension we appear are existing in, then where?
If outside of this space time dimension we appear are existing in, then where is the interface between that dimension and this dimension? No such interface has been discovered as of yet as far as I am currently aware of.
    * Note: Since this is a search for the real absolute truth concerning God, Intelligent Designer, Pre-existent Consciousness, etc, feel free to copy and paste this elsewhere to further the analysis and discussion.
    * For those who claim God actually exists besides just as a concept, please prove that 'b' above is really true and that 'a' is not really true.

    • @charlesbrightman4237
      @charlesbrightman4237 6 місяців тому +2

      Additionally:
      a. Modern science claims energy cannot be created nor destroyed, hence energy is eternally existent.

It would be useful to ask about details: age range, employment status, & social support. Younger people, unemployed people, unsupported people tend to struggle more to recover from Alcohol Or Drug Use than than middle-aged, employed, and/or supported people.
All the things the caller tried to use (recovery program, psychotherapy, meditative practice, etc.) which did not result in sobriety/recovery were still in his memory contributing to increasing potential to recover. It took time, during which he aged (eventually gaining more perspective), figured out how to keep a job, and figuring out how to put together a social support network to enhance his recovery efforts.
Callers like this often claim that they had tried 'everything' before 'finding God'. Well, "trying everything" takes time, and perseverance and commitment, and this helps them learn what social supports help support recovery and which do not. They don't often realize that they were ever so slowly increasing their ability to successfully recover. What seems evident to them is that, finally, they were able to recover. Since they hadn't been successful before, something else must exist to account for their success. Age, experience, better social support, employment. Oh, yeah, that.

Well I can't say I was ever atheist, thats a bit extreme in its quest for logic in itelself, but there was no God or Christ attached to my beliefs in my life.
My life was 100 percent indulgent. It was one big party. From age 14 to 35 it had always been booze, coke, sex , party, music etc. I was being a good boy if I was just smoking weed everyday.
I didn't even realize how bad of a person I was.
I Had a dream after my seperation at my lowest point on an alcohol/cocaine bender.
I had two. One right after the other that changed my life forever.
One involved demons, the devil. hell and something I'll call "separation from God".
The other involved the man we call Jesus.
The separation from God was something I had never felt in the real world, but it was by far the worst thing I've ever felt in my life. Like a sensation of being buried deep down in blackness for eternity with nothing but loneliness and hopelessness.
The sadness and darkness is indescribable.
However. On the contrary the opposite feelings were indescribable when I was in the face of Jesus.
Call them dreams and you're not wrong, but it made a believer out of me!
I cried out to him for the first time in my life and he answered.
Now i have to adjust my life to this truth. It's been 5 years and I'm on the path but still no ideal example albeit I'm a MUCH different and better person and maybe not always a nice man, but always a good man.
One thing I would say is even if hypothetically non of it was true, I see how just having the belief brings people peace and makes them better people with better morals and I can't see why we would want to diminish or discourage that ideology. It's existed this long and this far and wide. Only in this crazy new age do we see it as crazy!

Come back when you've bothered to look up the definition of "atheist". Because how the FUDGE does "doesn't believe in any gods" translate to "worshiping idols"!?

We are still waiting for you to provide some good verifiable evidence that you are right about your creator g0d and that one billion Hindus are wrong about theirs.
      What's the hold up?

      "stop worshipping idols"
You mean like an idol such as a figure on a cross or wearing cross around your neck? Those are idols...
      "and committing adultery"
I never got married so I can't commit adultery....
      ' I believe some demons"
There's no such thing... Are you a mental case?
"I pray all the people of the world "
Here's a better idea: GROW UP AND GET A MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT!
F**k why is it you people post like retreads and thing we are going to listen to you....
Do you really think we are as stupid as you?

@@DenisK21 Romans 1:23 teaches us that all people exchange the truth about God for a lie, choosing to worship the creation rather than the Creator. That includes atheists. John Calvin was right when he said that man’s sinful nature produces a “perpetual factory of idols.” Undoubtedly, an atheist’s idol will look different than a Buddhist statue (@holgerlubotzki3469)
The atheist may rely solely on his own reason to decide what’s true, he may give himself fully to physical pleasure, or, as Jesus put it, he may choose to serve money rather than God (Matthew 6:24). God’s assessment is still the same: Many atheists have rejected God simply because they don’t like the God revealed in Scripture. Regardless of the reason, atheists are no strangers to idolatry, and God’s assessment is still the same thank you.
