Problems to Look out for When Buying a Used Toyota Solara Convertible

- The Toyota Solara is in a league of its own. There is no other used convertible that is reliable as the Solara. Dependable, safe, attractive and with the highest resale value makes the Toyota Solara the best used cabriolet that you can buy. There were two generations of the Solara. The first generation ran between 1998 and 2004 and the second generation between 2005-2008. The problems to look out for with the first generation were a cogged idle air control valve, otherwise known as the IAC, the O2 sensors, sludge problems and leaking valve cover gaskets. The 3.0 engine was a non-interference engine with a timing belt.. The second generation had the 3.3 engine which also had a timing belt but was an interference engine. Both engines were very reliable as long as you changed the oil regularly and on schedule.
Elderly neighbor sold me her late husband's 2005 Solara convertible for $5500. Pristine condition and only has 50,000 miles on it. Great car!
Hello , i keep hearing that convertibles make large amounts of noise while driving. Would you mind sharing your experience with your Solara?
@@eiyrie2990 Only if the top is down and you're driving fast (over 55 mph). I only drive with the top down in the city where the speed limit is usually 40mph or less, so it isn't a problem for my use case.
The only major complaint is that visibility through the back window while the top is down is limited, so backing out of a busy parking lot may be a problem.
@@eiyrie2990 Hi, I have owned several convertibles and for me the road noise has never been an issue. The older covertibles ( I learned to drive on a 1967 Chevy Impalla convertible) may have been a bit noisier due to air moving over the vinyl tops and less interior insulation, but more modern convertibles drive and sound pretty much like a normal car. If you are thinking of getting a convertible don't let the noise argument dissway you from making the purchase. If it is a used convertible just make sure it has been well maintained as you would any other car. The car I own now, a 2007 Toyota Solara, looks exactly like the car in this video. We purchased it in 2011 with 25k miles and it now has 165k miles and we keep it well maintained and follow the manufactureres maintenance recommendations. My wife and I love it! Good luck!!
Too bad some one had to kick the bucket so you could get a car.
I’ve had a convertible since I was 16. I’m 67. I bought a 2007 3.3 SLE Solara for $7500 & 38K miles on it. It just passed 127K. Never had any problems except a dead starter at 85K. The top is always down, unless it’s raining or snowing. The road noise is NOT a problem. The low profile tires are very quiet.
I have the 04 hard top.
140,000 miles.
Still runs good.
Same I Have A Sliver 04 Best Coupe Ever…
I have the 06 hardtop with 131k miles, 3.3ltr 6cyl 225hp. It's my 2nd Solara, my 1st was a 99 hardtop.
@@daniellenichols9757thinking of getting a 1999 hardtop at 168k that's been taken care of , not sure about the high miles
2006 soft stop, I got her at 112k miles...now she's at 211k! Still running !!!
I recently bought a 2007 Solara. Here is additional 2 cents from me if u buy one of those.
Check the water leaks from the gutter of the roof top. The gutter of the roof is hidden under the black metal cover at the top of the trunk, but you will see the gap. Close the roof and hose lots of water at the back of the roof. Water goes into that gap, then it will come out from the sides of the car. If there is a hole or tear with the gutter, you will see a lot of water inside the trunk. Mine was this case, and it was a huge pain for me to fix those huge holes. Holes are so common at the both side of the corner of the back.
Same issue I had and water went under the back seats aswell
I just bought this car for my daughter for her sweet 16. We love it!
Hell yeah
Great dad/mom.
My 2002 Solara has just over 168K and still runs beautifully. Great, reliable car.
I own a 2007 Solar convertible with same coloring as the one in this video. I have loved this car for 16 years. Your video was informative. Thank you

You must please post more videos, they are all excellent.
I own a 2007 Solara now sitting at 101K + miles. Great ride all around. Your video was very unique in that it was fully descriptive of the vehicle, highlighted problem areas without being harshly critical and, best of all, you were down to earth on your presentation. Thank you greatly.

Hi Greg, I have a 2007 Toyota Solar (white w/tan top, tan leather interior) which I purchase in February 2011 with 25k miles and it still is performing excellent with a 165k miles on it. I have owned many cars in my life and several covertibles, but this is without a doubt my favorite car that I have ever owned. My wife and I both love driving this car and we do our very best to keep it well maintained and follow the manufacturers maintenance schedule. I replaced the top and the drain gutter myself a few years ago and overall the car still looks beautiful. The interior is starting to show its age from normal everyday use, but that is to be expected. My wife and I will periodically speak about getting a newer car ( before this car I would typically get a newer car every five years or so) but we both love driving this car so much it would break our hearts to get rid of it as it still looks and drives great. Unless Toyota starts making a convertable again we have no plans on trading it in anytime in the foreseeable future. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for this! About to buy a mint condition red 04 SLE with 113k miles. Happy to know it has many years left in it.
People didn’t take care of them I’ve looked at so many of these and everything time I go under the oil cap it’s super dark build up in it
That's one car whos styling could be described as polarizing.
Always a good day when Greg uploads a new video, thanks man.
Info came in handy with the purchase of an 08 fully optioned SLE. One owner older couple, garaged and heavily serviced. For a 14 year old car it looks barely a couple years worn. Everything works no rust all the bits and they even kept the window sticker. Do wish it had a manual though I know the convertible didn’t offer it. Still so fun to drive and a suitable daily for all my stuff my truck doesn’t need to do. 125k miles and they had the timing belt done. Only thing I updated was the head unit and added a backup camera.
Ditto on the one I bought recently. I can't completely verify entire maintenance but clearly it was a well-maintained car that runs as smooth as can be. I also added an upgraded head unit and camera which is really the only thing these cars need to bring up to a more modern spec. Going into the purchase I planned on keeping the car for just a couple of years but a few months in I can see keeping the car until it dies lol.
For the guy who posted the video, the mid-cycle refresh came in 2007 but otherwise I'd say everything about the video is spot on.
Same for me. I’m at 127K on my 2007 SLE. Fun car, good mileage. Great car.
I got one a couple years ago and also did a head unit and back up camera upgrade. It really is the one major thing this car is missing and the factory integrated feel is great. Unless this car really starts gaining in value to the point of making some good money, I don't see any reason to get rid of it and will keep it as another car if for whatever reason I need to get something more modern.
One thing not really covered was the dash cracking issue. These cars are notorious for developing cracks and really bad. Any prospective buyer would see it but even on a good car it's something to keep in mind as a potential issue down the road.
@@thedude957 l lucked out in that area as the prior owner kept it in a garage mostly. No cracking but it does get weird and sticky in high heat. Also got a premium cover with it that I still use regularly. Just got it back from the shop after rats ate the harness triggering a bunch of codes. Had left it at my mom’s for a couple months for reasons. All good now and only $500. Getting ready to do some further upgrades to the audio, tinting the windows darker and adding in a dashcam. Oh and new headlight domes. Love this car.
We have had a 1999 Solara, and two 2007 Solara Convertibles. They are excellent cars and if Toyota was to produce a new line of these I would put in my order on one. We still own one and my wife does not want to part with it and go with a Highlander or something more Colorado friendly. So I put a new set of tires on it, change the oil and battery and we are good for a long time.
I have a 2003 Highlander with 136k miles and wow, I love my car. Definitely is a bigger change but here I am looking for a beautiful Solara 😂
Bought my 2007 ragtop Oct 06. My everyday driver. No problems until the alternator and hood struts needed replacing this month. I get lots of compliments. No, it's not for sale!

@@eiyrie2990 Nature of the beast but nothing like ragtops of the 1960s & 1970s. These have headliners. Biggest downside of any ragtop is rear visibility. Hardtop convertibles have much less trunk space but I'm sure are quieter.
My 2007 3.3 SLE IS available for sale but I want $20K for it 🤠

We own a '06 with 75,000 miles and bought it with about 60,000 miles. Changed the timing belt at 65,000 miles I expect it to reach 200,000 miles. Change oil every 5,000 miles. Took it on a 3,000 mile trip with zero problems, would drive it anywhere!

Thank you for your video. I bought a used 2006 Solara convertible in 2017 for $10k. It is light blue with a light tan top and an almost ivory leather interior. I am the third owner. I knew both previous owners and that it was well cared for. The car had 10k miles, I jumped at the chance to buy it. Now the car has 17.5k miles. I have other vehicles and I live in the frozen north, so it doesn't get much use other than on nice sunny days, but it sure is fun to drive when I do use it. I have loaned it out to friends from the warmer climes when they visit and they get a real kick out of driving a convertible where you wouldn't think that one would exist. We do get temperatures up in the high 70s and 80s during our short summers.
Great to know. I am looking into a used 2006 white solara with 73k miles on it.
We bought a used 2007 Toyota Solara in 2017 for about $4,000. It was good deal. I had never heard of Solara before. We bought it because it was a Toyota and coming from a trusted seller. It's our only car now. We had a 2000 Corolla that we recently parted with. Loved that car.
Saw one exactly like this for sale by private party with 39k miles. Just bought it for my son. What a great car. Owner was meticulous.
I have an 06 convertible with 190K and it runs like a top! the 3.3 L engine is a non interference engine .
I think its an interference engine. Make sure to change your timing belt when its due
thank you for this video you are so on point with the mechanical issues i use to own a 98 sienna that had this same engine and all the issues you
described i experienced to its credit it never broke down on me and it was bullet proof I bought it with 119K it was parked
and totaled in a three car accident thank god i wasnt in it🙏 RIP Sienna with 187K and it was still going strong i never had the sludge issue
Long time no see. Thank you for continuing.

I am about to buy a 2006 that has 30k miles. Got burnt on my last car I bought so I am doing my due diligence. Hopefully it’s the right choice 😊
Have it checked out by a mechanic. But it is a terrific car if it passes.
It is a great car if it was maintained
Bought an SEL Recently. 2008, 92k, one owner, dealer serviced, garaged. Hit in rear over a decade ago but you would not know it. Nice car. Paid 10k and it was a fair deal Handles better then I thought it would. Not a sports car but sporty. My mechanic was surprised at the great condition of the car. Satisfied so far.
I have a 2007 Toyota Solara convertible, I love it! Black.
Mine’s red with tan interior. I love it !!
Greg, I bought a 2010 Highlander from a private party based on your tips and recommendations. It’s been 3 years and one of the best purchases I’ve ever made! Thanks! Do you have any videos on the best gen and things to look out for on the Camry or Accord similar to your Prius and Highlander videos?
Wow, I didn't even know they existed 😳 would love one of those 🥰.
I have a 2004 Toyota Camry Altise sedan here in Australia, and I love the reliability about it.
I watched your video because my wife's client offered to sell us a Solara for $2000 .I still have to go see it tho.
My friend bought a red '06 Solara convertible and I drove it a lot. I liked the car so much I'm looking for one of my own, preferably white. The Solara is very reliable and fun to drive. My only complaints would be limited view out the back when the top is up and the leather seats got very hot during the summer months, particularly if the top was down. There was also an occasional rotten egg smell from the catalytic converter.
I had a 05 Solara se sport. V6 was a good car traded it at 131,000 miles dependable car. Replaced front tie rods struts & general wear things brake pads Toyota quality.
And timing belt water pump at 91,000 miles.
The refresh happened in 2007, not 2005. The car was the same from 2004-2006, and the final two years had the bumper taillights, Bluetooth, new grill, steering wheel, new holes in the rollover headrests etc. otherwise, pretty spot on I think.
Great video. I love my Solara Coupe. I dont like the interior noise of the convertible nor the maintenance on the roof so I’m fine with my sunroof . I love this car and do think it will be very reliable but it’s lacking in comfort and has street / wind noise . Eventually I will switch to the 2002 - 2006 Lexus Es . Maybe it’s because I’m over 50 . I’m gonna try some aftermarket seat cushions first as I can always turn music up for the noise. One thing I will say is switching to ride flat tires added some noise. I’m more concerned with the seat comfort . I do like the ergonomics. I’ll probably regret selling ! Lol I’ll just continue to change oil every 3 k and hope it doesn’t start to burn oil as I have the 4 cylinder.
I have a 1999 V6 SE with 5 speed manual. First gear is quite low and a lot of fun, getting the engine into its power range really quickly. Very different from the sluggish automatic transmission.
2007 Solara convertible with 220k miles with no issues. It’s a Toyota After-all
I have a 2014 Lexus is350c convertible that i adore and still want one of these lol. love toyota
Thank you very much for your comment. Actually this car was great I drove this 2013-2016 in NY Eastchester. A bit understeer so it was easy to drive.
I recommend you to buy if you want to drive valuable convertible car in this world.
In my 2005, he internal rain guttering system was made of cloth and it degraded to the point that it would allow water to leak behind the back seat/floor and the trunk, filling up the spare tire well. Removing the rubber plugs under the back seats and in the bottom of the spare tire well helped the water drain, but the back seats still become somewhat soggy in heavy rain.
You left out the best feature of the car: My 2008 has a BIG trunk, and I simply cannot find ANY convertible that offers me anything like its' trunk space!!!
I am purchasing a 2001 SLE great video, I will be looking at oil cap very close. Great video 👌👍👏
I have this car. Bought it used 6 years ago. Engine and transmission is solid like new still but body is falling apart and it's pissing me off. All the plastic outer trim pieces around the window and on the back of the convertible top are either cracking or peeling off and fading. All the rubber moldings around windows have gone to shit as well. Engine bolts are rusty that's no big deal. Some smaller rubber hoses became brittle. I am banging my head on trying to find what these parts are called so I can order replacements for them. Biggest issue is the convertible top which leaks now costs like 3 grand or something to fix. They made the engine so well that the body of the car will deteriorate before the engine ever does.
Love your videos. At 4:10, what would you say the life tile for this engine is? My Lexus ES330 (same3.3) is currently at 300,000 miles with no signs of stopping at all. You also uploaded another same Lexus with about 600,000 miles, so the potential life span could honestly be like anything!
Enjoy your informative videos. Seems like you were in the St. Louis, Missouri area. If so hope you had a nice stay😊.
This 3.3 was also in the Sienna. Great engine when maintained. I like it little more than the 3.5 that replaced it.
Selling my 06 Solara Convertible. Loved it and would like to sell to someone who will love it.
Miles?
Using this video to help convince my partner that the 2006 Solara we found is the way to go 😈
I just found a 2004 listed with only 50k miles on it. Im super excited, to say the least. I just hope there isn't anything wrong with it.
I’m one of the lucky owners of an 08. Mine also has the optional vsc and tc. I also have the optional hid headlights.
I have the exact same car. Love it!!
I like all your reviews for Toyotas. But I also miss the reviews for evolution of Corolla/Matrix Vibe/Corolla Hatchback various 1.8L engines.
I have a 2002 solara. I love it
Hey, we are still here... where are you? wish you wel.
And I would like to see a comparison between the Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe.
Here in Canada, the base Vibe started as a better equipped car. When combined with GM's financing and price flexibility, the Vibe became the better option. Now I just wonder what I did with the $2-4,000 I saved when I bought mine in 2005 🤔
Same car different look
The Vibe is a re-badged Matrix and is 99% identical.

my 2004 convertible never leaks
My 2007 doesn’t leak either. I’m in northern Calif so we have a rainy season.
Have a 2007 white convertible .Headlights fade in the sun and I polish them out.
Would like to get new headlamp assemblies.
Problem is my headlights tilt up and down.
There is a switch on the left side of steering post.
I can not find any reference in Toyota parts for these tilting head lamps.
So my question to the Solara world is can I just put in regular headlamps??
Hi there. I’m buying one hopefully-it’s 2024. The one I’m buying is a 2005. Buying because I need a reliable vehicle for $5K or less. 164K miles…any thoughts? Or things I should check when I go test drive? Also, do you have any thoughts regarding an Avalon vs Solara? Thanks!
I've been researching Toyota Solaras and the convertibles are plentiful. It's the coupes that are few and far between. I know that Toyota built a few of the first geniration (1999-2003) Solaras with the 3.0 L v6 engines and 5 -speed manual transmissions. I would love to find one of those cars in an unmolested condition. But I'm most likely going to have to settle for one of the second geniration (2004-2008) cars with an automatic trans. Those with the SLE trim package are really nice! But they all have those "sun-moon roofs". I worked with a man who restored cars for about 3 years. We restored a lot of English roadsters "MGBs TR6s and the occasional Jaguar. We had some meny of our customers bring their cars in with slashed roofs, and upholstery.. We worked on cars with those sun-moon roofs and T-Tops too, and we had the hardest time keeping those things from leakng..
Think you will have to go to Japan for the five speed. I sold Toyotas back then for Sandy Springs Toyota and we were told they weren't going to be available.
@YourCarAngel I have a 2002 Toyota Camry XLE V6 and I have been told that when I tune it up that the intake has to come off on it also, is it True or do you know how to get the plugs and coils out, because I was told that I have to also get the gaskets for the intake.
I’m getting a coupe version. No leaks!
What about the 4 cylinders that had oil burning problems? What year did those issues start
Hi Macke,
I'm happy I found your channel.
Please help me, what car will you recommend for a perfect fit for Uber business considering it fuel efficiency, low cost maintenance and durability?
Thanks.
Just want your input. My daughter bought a used 2002 solara convertible and after only a day all of a sudden the window just shattered, she said all she did was just opened the window and she was shocked it shattered into pieces. What could have happened? She said it was in fine shape when she got it otherwise she wouldn’t bought it. She’s shocked and disheartened, imagine after only having the car for one full day and there she is excited to drive it and all of a sudden that happened. My heart just breaks for her.
She lied..
When he says carbon does he mean like rust around the oil cap?
I tried. Just after the pandemic. I test drove 2. They were just too large. Too Bulky. Waaay too hard to see out the back. That was a deal breaker.
Paid half, bought a 2000 Cabrio, that was much more what I wanted. Handles waaay better, easier to maneuver, I can see out the back and it’s actually more solid feeling. That second gen Solara had a lot of cowl shake, and it was much newer, less miles. I may have considered a Paseo Convertible, but how often are those available? Still prefer the VWs, honestly. I wish we had more small convertibles in the USA. I bought a 15 XB manual a few years ago, I ❤️ it.
The Solara is a different kind of car though. VWs tend to be a bit sportier than Toyotas. But the Solara does offer a decent amount of room in the back seats and is definitely a boulevard cruiser. If that's your thing it's tough to go wrong with a Solara if you can find one in good condition.
@@thedude957 agreed. I was just absolutely blown away by the poor rear vision. One I last drive was $5000, 2005, 110k miles. Not a bad deal. It was on lovely shape. Just too bulky and difficult to see out of.
You said it's a pain to change power plugs and end with "it's easy to maintain"?
Thank you, I'm thinking about getting one of these
I can't believe people fall for the 10,000 mile oil change interval. That's just to make the EPA happy, not your car engine happy. 5,000 miles or less depending on driving conditions.
With synthetic? Definitely 7000.
Regular oil generally last 5000 miles. Synthetic oil 10,000 miles at most.
@@djkenny1202 I don't consider the oil, only the mileage/time. I consider synthetic to just be and added bonus of protection.
@@Leonardokite today’s oil has so many additives. Time means very little. Since I only Drive 3000 mikes a years, I change it about every 1.3 years, which is very soon. About 4k miles over a year. I am sure even every nearly 2 yrs I would be Okay.
Any issues with finding parts for it?
Interference engine? I read on Google it was not an Interference engine. Now I'm not sure if I want to buy one without records of timing belt being changed.
Double checked and it's a non interference engine 3.3 with timing belt.
Changed the timing belt at 120K, now at 127K. Runs great, love my 2007 3.3 SLE

I am the original owner of a cosmic blue 2008 Solar tan soft-top convertible. 80k miles in 16 years because the car was too big for me, but my wife said I would like it when I retire. Well retirement is here. 🙂
So many women love this car for some reason. It's like a magnet. Strangers come up to me. It's embarrassing really while listening to the Vogues and the Lettermen on the stereo.
Very informative and helpful tips and tricks :)
I would be interested in the there's problems with the rubber insulation at the very back of the convertible top well-watered my great sin from the defective seals and ruins the interior is no replacement for that they don't make that part anymore so I'd like to convertible but I guess I'll stick with the coop SLE with the sunroof I'm still looking for one you have to be so careful these these cars have to have that oil changed every 3,000 mi or less then you could see one with 49,000 miles and find out that it burns two quarts of oil because they didn't do any oil I guess if you do a compression test on a cylinder you could probably find out if the rings are bad that's what I plan on having John before I buy
Nice job my man!
Excellent Video. Thank you.
Has anyone upgraded their car with mods , if so i want to know more about ur build , I want to supercharge it do any one have any recommendations

Is that one for sale?? Have an 01 with 177k miles. Wouldn’t mind a convertible
I love this car❤️
I've owned several Solaras....coupes and ragtops. Great cars. I thought the Gen 1 was beautiful. The 2nd gen is weird looking IMO, but is a better car from a technical point of view. Get the V6. Performs MUCH better and gets practically the same mileage. The 4 also has occasional issues, like oil consumption. On the 2nd Gen, some of the LCD dash gauges are almost impossible to see in daylight...an aggravation. I thought that the 2nd Gen 5 speed automatic was rather lazy in its shifting, albeit very reliable. My gen 1 ragtop roof leaked around the windows in the rain and was sloppy to latch closed. My Gen 2 ragtop was better in that regard. My gen 1 V6 did develop valve cover gasket leak at about 150k miles. Easily repaired. I'd buy another ragtop Gen 2...but I gotta say...the "blob" styling just never grew on me, I'll likely buy a Mustang GT instead next time.
I have a 1999 Solara SLE, 70k miles. I bought it with 67k 8 months ago for 2,500$.
It's basically already paid for itself. I am having a noticeable shaking, mostly feel it between 30mph and 60ish. I have balanced and rotated wheels. No change. There doesn't seem to be a definite "cause" answered in any of the sites I've read. I travel for a living, so I don't drive it alot, but before I just throw money at parts? Any suggestions?
I have a 2007 Solara. My car would sometime start getting a small but noticible shimmy/shake to it at around 40 to 60 mph. I had the tires balanced and rotated but I continued to get the shimmy between 40 to 60 mph, particularly going downhill and braking. I ended up putting new tires on it (Michelin Defender2 215/55R17) and all shaking and shimmy went completly away. The tires previously were also Michelin Defenders and they had around 70k miles, which is a lot but they were rated for 80k miles. I think I possibly could have gotten another year out of them, but I am relieved and glad I purchased the new tires earlier than expected.

Confused now! I was told before that 3.3L WAS NOT a interference engine....now this person is saying it is.......does anyone know 100% if it isnt or is? Thanks : )
fscortti. The 3.3L is definitely an interference engine. Timing belt snaps and expect major damage. But just change the belt at specified interval and no problem.
