  • Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
  • This is a shootout of main compressors used by the legendary David Gilmour.
    The Boss CS-2, the Demeter Compulator and the MXR Dyna Comp Script Custom Shop Reissue.
    This review is based on the amazing Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
    The gear used is :
    Strat Gilmour NOS Custom Shop
    Hiwatt Little D with Genalex Gold Lion tubes
    Xotic SL Drive (for second solo only)
    Effectrode Tube-Vibe (for "Waving" part only)
    Gurus Echosex 2 Delay
    Hardwire Supernatural Reverb
    Recording :
    Shure SM57
    AKAI EIE Pro
    Logic Pro X
    My choice for these is the Boss CS-2, really warm and opened sound with great reacting (thanks to the "Attack" knob).

    I think the Compulator sounds best, that is with the settings you are using. However, the Dyna Comp is set in a way that it is squashing the sound too much. You need to back off the sensitivity so it is set around 9:30 or 10:00.

    I have all three of those and for cleans, hands down the boss is boss...fuzz tones or overdrive, the Demeter and mxr are better. Subjective to my ears of course, but just my thoughts. Good demo dude.

    This is great, thanks for taking the time to do the demo. Compression is key to a Gilmour sound as you are clearly very aware and the MIJ Boss CS2 and script logo MXR Dynacomp so classic.

    "Opinions are like a**holes; everyone's got one and they all stink." How do we know that each pedal is set for the most optimal sound? All I know is Gilmour used a Dyna Comp back in the day. That's good enough for me personally.
    Don't over think things. Which ever one you pick will sound fine.

    The Boss and MXR both sound perfect for David’s later sound, MLOR and on. The Boss is unsurprising for that (‘cause that’s what he used on the album) but I was shocked that the Compulator sounded better for his earlier Dyna-Comp sound than the Dyna-Comp.

    The Dyna Comp IS the sound but you are choking the tone too much. Should be more like 11 o'clock not 3 o'clock -turn that knob down for more sustain and warmth. No way Gilmour had it at 3 o'clock.

    The CS-2 sounds full and handle right the dynamics of the play in this video .. I think you're too confident with black one (forget the name lol) so your phrases went right .. and flowed as it seems to be..in the second part of the solo the dynacomp won... warm and dynamic ! This is a really great demo of the pedals and lovely playing, thanks. All the compressors are nice but I can't help loving the CS2 in this. I'm using a Wampler ego at the moment and wondering whether to go back to Boss. I had a CS3 back in the day, it was noisy, but some good tones when set mildly. Did the Boss affect the signal much when off?

    • @PinkFloydish
      @PinkFloydish  8 років тому +2

      Hi David. The Compressor is my favorite pedal for replicating Gilmour's tone and i've tried A LOT of them. I actually keep two with, one Ross style and one optical.
      For the Ross style, none has ever beaten the CS-2, it's my all time favorite ross-compressor and can't hear any difference in the signal chain with or without when turned off. (just to say : the CS-3, to my ears, is an awful crap and should never been used for gilmour's tone, but might suit other styles, don't know).

    • @ebeep
      @ebeep 6 років тому

      Yep. I had the Ego comp and was less than thrilled. For me, the only comp that is as good as my Boss CS-2 is my EMMA Transmorgrifier, early production though as the later have a slightly different circuit and are harsh. I still have my old script-logo dyna-comp which is nice as a boost, but otherwise I've bought and sold a million comps all defeated by the CS-2 and Transmorgrifier: Empress Comp, Cali76 big-box, Cali76 Compact Deluxe, EQD Warden, MXR M87, Keeley Comp+, Keeley 2-knob, Effectrode, Ego, etc. etc.

    Nice review. The CS-2 and the Dyna Comp are good but they somehow sound darker and impair guitar tone; nothing like the vintage editions that David once used. The Compulator is very transparent/quiet and comes much closer to what a compressor should really do - especially in soloing (clean or lead tones). Smart pedal choices, in your demo... Never give away your Tube-Vibe ;) Cheers.

    • @PinkFloydish
      @PinkFloydish  8 років тому +3

      +Mr. Archonta Thanks for those kind words :) Actually, the CS-2 is exactly the same as he used for few years, especially during the Pulse tour. Every CS-2 are the same as they were made between 81' and 86' and the one David uses is not modded ;) And it's my favorite of the three ! The CS-3 is a total crap !
      The CS-2 is not transparent at all and that's what can give this Gilmourish tone exceptionally well ! The Demeter is the most transparent but too transparent for my tastes, it's optical, so it's subtle.

    • @MrArchonta
      @MrArchonta 8 років тому

      Pink Floydish
      You have a strong point there, but I'm not sure that modding is out of the question. David owns very expensive custom Pete Cornish pedal boards; it would be difficult to assume that he was not at least tempted to improve the cheap guts of the CS-2... Also, CS-2 is definitely *not* what makes the Gilmourish tone a reality. At least, it's the last thing that contributes to its shaping. It's more to the combination of guitar/amp/cabling used and the amp's response when it is pushed. That's why everything in between has to be transparent, if not invisible. No great artist build up their personal tone by taking advantage of effect natural weaknesses, no matter what magazines or the web say ;) Nevertheless, I was so glad to know that someone on YT makes a very serious effort for this tone; very few people do that really good.

    • @PinkFloydish
      @PinkFloydish  8 років тому +5

      Trust me, i've read everything possible to know about this, read the whole Phil Taylor book (Gilmour's tech for 1974 now) and saw a lot of interviews of Gilmour talking about his gear (things you can't find on youtube :D ), and so i'm sure you need all his gear, his amps, his guitar and his tecs. But the compressor is absolutely the FIRST thing to shape his tone ! Without this, you could have all his gear and won't ever sound a little bit like him. Yeah, cable are VERY importants, I use Evidence Audio for all my gear and it changed my life !! :)
      He uses "lots of non bypassed pedals in his gear so it shouldn't AT ALL be transparent !!
      About the CS-2, sure he has Pete Cornish and all expensive gear, but the price doesn't matter, if he (or either of us) tries a 80$ pedal and find it perfect, no need to mod it ;) He has and had lot of 100$ pedals not modded at all.
      I've got all new gear since this vid, i'll post a new one more "Pulse" tone :)

    • @MrArchonta
      @MrArchonta 8 років тому +1

      What you get is what you pay for. In time you will know because you have good taste in tone. Many years back I would have fully shared your opinion. Every Pete Cornish pedal has dual buffers (I/O) by default and separate custom buffers are used before and after the entire setup. As a result, the high impedance signal is transformed to low impedance signal and tone is preserved ;). Evidence cable is excellent, I observed your Monorail setup in your pedal board. I use the same cable to overpopulated boards. Far out. David uses a lot of Evidence Lyric HG, which is sadly out of production. Try to find a Custom Audio Electronics compressor (uses tube), a design of the legendary designer Bob Bradshaw. Bradshaw, Cornish and Demeter form the 'holy triad'. Last but not least: When you play solo you want the utmost transparency, because you need your compressor to sustain ONLY your decaying signal... So there shouldn't be any difference in tone characteristics between your attack and decay signal parts ;) Protect your tone...

      Funny how the CS-3 Boss are a dime a dozen and other one seems to care about them, but the old CS-2 is sought after. I have ever had offers to buy when people see them on my pedal board. I will not sell. They're also indestructible. I had a girlfriend try to smash mine in the street back around 1986 or 1987; all she managed to do was chip the paint a little. There in orange under the blue, FYI, haha

    Shine on = mxr dyna comp, but for everything after that I would use the CS-2

    You have the squash set too high on the Dyna comp for the lead part to get an accurate assessment. That knob at 3 o'clock is crazy. On the sustaining clean it works but no way on the less stuff. Needs to be at 9 or 10 o'clock. Bad use of a great pedal. If you had rolled it back would be more on par or beat the CS-2. Also Demeter is more "clean" with less coloration but other issue is there's something in the top end of your tone I'm not digging, so it's hard to assess that one as well.

    Hey, do you used standard 9V DC or ACA BOSS style power supplies which is an unregulated 9v which is like 12-15 volts DC in reality for BOSS CS-2? This case will coloring the sound

      Hi,
      I used standard 9V output on my Voodoo Lab 4X4 for all three pedals :)

      thank you so much,
      after i also read article on internet, hope you try powering with 12V on BOSS CS-2 :)

      Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try !
      I thought it would burn inside the pedal using 12V, as it's supposed to be 9V.

      The CS-2 requires use of the Boss ACA adaptor which puts out unregulated 12-15v DC, The Voodoo Lab manual will tell you to use the dip switch to change output to 12v for ACA Boss pedals. Here's more info:

    Gilmour used a Dynacomp.... Maybe that's why it sounds right ;-)

      Andy Betts I have read he used two Boss CS 2 pedals .
      I'm not sure about Dyna Comp but now Robert Keeley has made a Darkside pedal to get all the Gillmore sounds in one box

      Doc Tiberius 2 boss cs2's..... not on shine on he didn't. he did however use boss pedals in the early 80's on his solo tour as part of his Boss SCC-700 pedal board..... but definitely not on the Floyd stuff. The intro to Shine On was also played through a DI straight into the desk... As was stated in the back of the Wish You Were Here sheet music book, taken from an interview with Gilmour as they were recording the track. From "Syds theme" onward he played through his hi-watt amps and WEM cabs, utilising a colorsound powerboost, Syds theme also ugtilised a phase 90. The intro is pretty clean with little to no effects, although you do hear some rotary speaker during the latter part of the track.

      not only Dyna comp. Dave also used Boss CS-2 in 80-90's and Compulator in 00's. today he uses Origin comps. there is no right or wrong, just different.
