- Queen's classic rock anthem performed by four bassoonists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison: Brian Ellingboe, Dave Wells, Theresa Koenig, and Marc Vallon.
Words (not used here) and music by Freddie Mercury. Arranged by Brian and Dave.
I love how the popularity of bassoon has grown so much. Anyone else geek out when they can hear a bassoon playing in a movie or a commercial... Or maybe I'm just the geekiest of all... lol
Yep
lmao whenever there's bassoon in music I always point out to my friends 😆
I am the geeky bassoon. Well Big Bertha is the bassoon. I’m the geeky bassoonist 😂
I'm a tubist and I have mad respect for bassoonists now.
Same bro I think I’m gonna start bassoon soon
As some one who plays both tuba and bassoon, it's AMAZING the different face muscles you'll use between the two. Also, my range and power on tuba increased massively after a month or two on bassoon.
WW IronmenFB once you play bassoon everything else seems easy compared to it
Bon Jobey yeah, when I play saxophone it seems so effortless compared to bassoon.
Thank you so much!!! I play the Bassoon for awhile now, and nobody at my age knows what it is!! Sometimes I wonder, why I play the instrument. But it is moments like this that gets me think:"Shut up!! Bassoon is a F**king awesome instrument!".
Hey u signed up for this. I've been asked why I play the bazzoon, the bazzoka and the big piece of wood
"Bazzoon"
Never underestimate a humans ability to not know stuff
I play the bagpipe and I'm 16 ...
My first concert in sixth grade someone asked if it was a really weird bass clarinet...
Bassoon is such a beautiful instrument, if I had the choice I would have totally started with that instead of clarinet.
Amir King I started with clarinet and moved to bassoon. It's better to start with clarinet first, since it's an easier instrument to learn. I would not want a newbie musician to start out on a double reeded instrument. Plus, most of the fingerings for bassoon are close to the ones for clarinet. It's an easy transition, is what I'm trying to say.
I was a percussionist, and my band teacher one day said "Hey, how would you like to play the bassoon?" Not knowing what it was, I said Yes. It was VERY difficult to learn, and play in a concert from 3 months after I first picked up a reed (let alone a double read) but, I feel I have gotten fairly good at it. This was in 7th grade, mind you.
**reed
I am an exception to that then, I stared straight out on Bassoon and have been playing for six years now. BTW in my opinion, if you want to start learning on the Bassoon, just do it. It is far easier to learn one instrument off the bat than to learn on just forget all that and relearn everything...
in case you wonder, I started playing in 5th grade, am now in 11th and playing with the Community Band that took me to Carnegie Hall.
Regina Phalange I did the same thing. I played clarinet for 4 years and then switched to bassoon.
Us bassoonists dont get enough respect
agreed 🤞🏼
Ambearlie Golbrock Agreed! I play bassoon in my highschool band and all the trombones poke me.
You Bassoonists don't get enough respect.
agreed😔
True, the only people that respect me are the bass clarinets.
I’m just barely leaning sax and bassoon at the same time and this is what fuels my love for music
THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER I HAD MY MOUTH OPEN IN DISBELIEF AND I JUST COMPREHEND HOW AMAZING THIS IS
Bravo! Being a [amateur]bassoonist AND a Queen fan, I couldn't help but love what you've done. And you nicely illustrated how, with it's range, the bassoon is able to span the impressive octave span originally sung by Freddy Mercury and Roger Taylor.
My cat is making a face. Does she not like Queen? Bassoons? What's not to like? this rocks!
I love the timbre of bassoon and this performance demonstrates the range and humanity of the instrument really well. We need more bassoon in popular music!
Me: *Plays clarinet at the moment but is switching to bassoon*
Also me: *Watches 100000000000 bassoon videos for fun*
Im so happy your switching! Bassoon is so fun but really under rated! I hope you like it!
Bro- I did the same thing. I was so scared cause when I switched, I had three days to learn a piece of music for an event and I didn't start lessons until two weeks later- So bassoon videos helped a lot-
can you keep both? Both are really important parts for the orchestra and both have large instrument families...
SGA Hobbyists depends, I got my clarinet from a music store on a contract while the bassoon is the school’s instrument (I’m getting a contract for a bassoon soon) and I was allowed to keep my clarinet since the contract isn’t over yet while the bassoon is going to stay with me until I leave my school. I guess it all depends where the instruments are from.
This sounds amazing! I have been playing bassoon for less then a year, but I hope that one day, I can get to this point
Same,
me too, I've been playing for a year and I'm playing it for all county and a college honor band because I'm the only good bassoon player in my county.
I've been playing bassoon for just over 2 years now
Lly Rnchrl same
I’m a 2yr band player, first chair in my city, and 4th wind symphony
Queen + Bassoon = Double awesomeness!!
I love this song and I'm glad their is an chance to hear it played on bassoon, especially if most people don't really call our intruments the right names
MAD respect for them standing while playing that's some hard crap to do
This is a really impressive and unique twist to a great rock song! I never thought you'd be able to put a rock song to a bassoon quartet, but these four do a great job!
Are you kidding me??? How can you go up to that c at 4:10???....That's fucking crazy!!!!!
The C took a trick reed. The Bb was a special fingering, a good reed, and some luck.
David Wells
that was great!!!! could you teach me the two fingerings, please?
That high C is not really that hard to get out, you just need to know the correct fingering, and usually a pretty old reed for it.
+Riccardo Papa actually, there isn't a fingering for that c... But I can play it enough easily on a Yamaha 811, which isn't famous for its high notes... Here's how do I do. First, you should practice with G5, the fingering is a bit tricky: left index hole (or half hole, depending on the instrument, I cover the full hole) and A key (not totally opened, only a bit). You should play around a bit with that fingering to find the correct "touch" ;-). Uh, i was forgetting, you have obviously to put your teeth on the reed (for practicing this even E5 and F5 are good).
Then, when you're VERY good with G5, you have to break the harmonic. The best way I found to do it is to add the Bb position on right hand.
So:
G5: (teeth on reed)
a | x
| o
| o
| o
| o
| o
C6: (teeth on reed)
a | x
| o
| o
b | x
| x
| o
Tell me if you manage to play it ;-)
+Enrico Febbraio I have no problem with any reed to play until g#5, I just got really shocked as I heard a c played so clear. Thank you very much for the fingering! If you know also the fingerings for a, bb and b I would appreciate to learn something new! :)
I've been playing bassoon for about 7 years now. I can't wait to play in college and play upper level music like this:)
+Caitlin Hosterman you must be pro after seven years aha
+Ellie D No, not really. Sure I'm good but there is always room for improvement:) just practice and you will sound great
+Caitlin Hosterman that's pretty good!
and thanks aha
+Caitlin Hosterman It's amazing how seven years on an instrument is really such a short amount of time.
You Bassoonists are AMAZING! I have been playing bassoon for three years now and you guys just became my idols for bassoon!!! That was an Incredible performance!!!
Right when I thought I was good, I went and watched this video...
XD same here XD I've got lots of practice to do! XD
Audra Jones This video just made me wanna learn how to play it even more omg
The tone quality is lovely! I feel like the acoustics could have been better though. It's rather echo-ey and difficult to hear the different parts.
I love this song and I love this instrument!
I'm a tuba player in our wind ensemble and am going to be learning bassoon for concert band. One of the most beautiful instruments out there, and you guys make it sound so nice. Keep it up!
You guys sound absolutely beautiful. I've only been playing for a year and a half now, and watch you guys all the time.
I play piccolo which is basically the polar opposite of bassoon but I have MAD respect for bassoonists. I wanna learn one day.
So expressive! Brings me to tears. I have been playing trombone for a year and never fathomed listening to this kind of music. For eternity, may music live on
Go Badgers!! This ROCKS!! I have played that stage many times but never Queen!
Have you guys noticed that the bassoon is always in the front of the orcestra? Its because it not only the pretiest instrument but it has the prettiest voice and its so unique that that you can always hear it over all the other instruments =)
I have just spent all day listening to this, writting down the arrengement for my bassoon quartet :) We will perform this next week. It wont be as perfect as this, but we will try to do our best ;)
I don't play bassoon, but now I'd love to
No Face me too
I play the flute, but I want to switch now :)
No Face me too
just be prepared to lose $20 when you break a reed.
I've been playing bassoon for just over 2 years now and I would never go back. It's a really fun instrument
Bassoon is my favorite instrument, it's truly a beautiful wonderful sounding piece of art
AB.FAB!!!!!!!!!!
Great transcription , great players!!
very beautiful
Absolutely loving that monster C
Awesome. Just pure awesome
wow i play bassoon in school and i cant believe how beautiful this is!its amazing i cant believe how awsome this instrument acctualy is.im glad people are going out and finding ways to express this amazing instrument
Beautiful
Also playing it standing up. You have my respect.
Most amazing thing ever!!!!!!
Just goes to show that despite what many people think, the bassoon is an incredibly versitile insturment. I played in Jr high and High School many years ago but never approached this range and ability.
this is one of reasons i decided to start playing again
Where has this been all my life
Love that upper register. Goosebumps!
I want to try out a bassoon now. This is really good, and in a range that I love. I'm a bari sax player, but I'd love to play this too.
welli started playing bassoon 5 years ago and i can't wait until i can play as well as you all do...it was AMAZING!!
this is rad, i love the Basson!!
I need to find a bassoon again. I really miss playing it, and it's videos like this that make me miss it even more. .
..wow! You guys ROCK!!!
I love bassoon. Such a pleasant change in band from flute. I played in Orchestra for 2 years as an upright bass so I can read bass clef!
Waddup with the dude on the right? How can he read the music??
Ikr. I have to be 2 inches away from my music to read it
I'm soo glad I'm not the only one. I need to have my stand very close, and also low, otherwise I don't see the music clearly enough to play! I'm not even short sighted, it's so weird.
Lada Karasková when u have been playing as long as him it becomes easier
Liza Terra It's my 10th year of playing the harp..
Im like that. I have to be far away or else i confuse notes for some reason.
I play the viola, I wish I played the Bassoon, but they're both unusual, kinda! I love them both.
I wish I could play this well! This shows just what an amazing instrument it is, when we rarely get to hear just bassoon.
This is great. It's such a clever way to show off the beautiful sound and the versatility of the Bassoon.
My vote goes for having ten bassoonists, and eating the entire orchestra with our amazingness, then taking the center stage(: GO BASSOONISTS
I LOVE BASSOON!!!!! The C6 at 4:10 is amazing...thats a high note for oboe and this is the first time I ever heard it on bassoon!
This was excellent!
That's what I call fabulous. Outstanding performance I give you each a superior rating.
THIS IS, LIKE, THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER
10 yrs later, still cool....
it's...so...beautiful...and epic
Beautiful!!
Flawless.
I never dreamed if this famous Queen's tune would be played by Bassoon quartet...
That was freaking amazing! It's things like this that make me wish I hadn't stopped playing
Amazing.
this just shows how awesome the bassoon really is!!!!!!
this is amazing
Wonderful!!
This is fantastic!!
Amazing , perfect❤😍👏👏
yes! bassoons rock!
awesome playing and an awesome arrangement!
very well done!
I LOVE the range on the bassoon! I'm barely reaching 3 full octaves of Bb concert, and I've only been playing for a little more than a year!
Thank you for sharing.
Phenomenal
Wow, this is awwwwwwsooooommme!!!!!!!
Love the tone quality. It has a Peter and the Wolf feel to it.
That was beautiful
That's awesome. I've been playing clarinet and I'm gonna switch to the bassoon.
LA ADAPTACION ES PERFECTA ES UNA HOBRA CLÁSICA FELICITACIONES MAGNIFICO
Fantastic
omg can I be this good. I mean i've only played the bassoon a year but dang.
Yeah give it another year or two, and a whole lot of practice and you'll be on the path to being this good.
i hope so :)
I've been playing for about two years, and let me tell you, I've improved so much over the past year. Some things you'll want to consider when playing bassoon:
1. Use hand made reeds. They're made with care, and are actually meant to be playable, unlike machine-made reeds. You can purchase them online, or maybe find a local bassoon player or lesson teacher to see if they sell reeds. They're generally more expensive, but so worth the extra $5.
2. You see those keys above the whisper key? Those are called flick keys. They're a bit hard for me to explain in a UA-cam comment section, so you can research them and how to use them to make the tone on your higher notes better.
3. USE. WARM. WATER. TO. SOAK. YOUR. REEDS. No bassoon players my age seem to understand this concept.
4. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! You will never develop any sort of good tone if you never take out as little as 15 minutes in your day to practice. Try not to practice for over an hour continually, (to be continued)
+TheMooseljack as you will get tired and start learning from your tired bassoon playing
Oh crap this comment is a year old. You've been playing just as long as I have lol
loved it
Amazingness!!!
Excelent! More basson players, more magic sounds in the band!
Salutations of a basson player of Mallorca!
I applauded at the end!!!
I used to work for UW-M...great arrangement, guys and gal! :-D
Felicitaciones, excelente cover... es de mis canciones favoritas y lo interpretaron muy muy bien... felicitaciones =D
This is great!
Theresa, thank you for making me not feel like such an idiot cuz I dance when i play too :)
I cannot describe the epicness of this video. Life:won
This is definately one of the best bassoon quartets i've heard
I mean there arn't that many but everyone has great tone in this :)
never heard something so cool on bassoon!
Wonderful arrangement and great playing by all of you!
I play bassoon too and its amazing instrument! I love to play it
@davewells Never thought that would be possible. That was cool! Nice!
BLOODY AMAZING!
Excelent. This is one of my favorite songs. Besides I likeít,because I play bassoon,
INCREIBLE-INCREDIBLE
i m from spain and tjis is incredible
this is why we need more than just bassoonist at my school. i'm so alone ;-;
I quite literally laughed out loud @ 4:10 in that. High Bb. Sick!
Even though Bassoon isn't my favorite woodwind to play I love how it sounds.
good Job.
I LOVE it!! so epic. "Bassoons the only instrument that matter"
