I dont miss doing that. I fix mowers now, thats all I do. I had a lady talk me into mowing her lawn last summer. I forgot how bad my grass mold allergys can be. When I was done mowing, I was sick for 2 days afterwards. My eyes were swelled and I could hardly breathe. I sold the mower I was using and told her I was done. It wasnt worth my health. I still deal with scraping decks and cleaning old grass under the mowers I repair. I usually wear gloves and a mask now when cleaning the deck . As stated, I do mower and small engine repair more as a hobby. I am disabled retired so I pick and choose what I do. I used to mow with a gas powered Reel mower and did custom designs in peoples grass for a fee back in the 1980's. People paid top dollar for a fancy cut and rolled lawn. No one does that any more. Its just whip through it and done. I started out in the back of a 1982 Mercury Lynx if you can believe it. It was a 5 door. I could take out the back seat, add a partial sheet of plywood and I could haul my lawn equipment in that. I used a push gas mower, a gas trimmer with the engine on the bottom, a blower and if needed a wheel borrow shovels and rakes. I kid you not. I moved up to a pickup with a plow for winter work, the reel mower, a self propelled 2 cycle lawn boy mower, a roller and the rest of it. Then got a trailer, a rider mower and still custom reel mower and roller plus my other. Then the economy took a dumper and I sold off everything. I ended up doing building maintenance after that. Wow, those were the days! Oh, just to clarify things, I worked full time at an automobile parts plant at the same time I was doing all that lawn maintenance stuff. Plus I took college classes three days a week. I still do not know how I did it back then. I know I only slept on days it rained. Yup. Didnt sleep much back then.
Crazy man! When customers of ours switch for whatever reason, most of the time for a cheaper price, we always let them know that they lose their place, we most of the time won’t be able to squeeze them back into our schedule. Literally when they leave for a cheaper price they’re back texting me within 90 days because they’re unhappy, I always raise the price or tell them we’re not interested in taking care of their property. I don’t like taking back clients like that. Love that you didn’t even go into detail about competition or get angry about someone putting their flyers on the door. When you’re busy as you you are the last thing you could care about is a customer leaving for a cheaper price. Keep it up man!
Absolutely you want to stress the competition...just as you guys do, with tremendous attention to details and great service! Place the stress on them in the best way; great service and quality production! You guys are great, don't forget that!

I get a fair bit of flack from some people about my prices. They think that because I'm a kid I should be charging cheap like most others get paid in Maccas or wherever. Once I show them the $18k of equipment I have sitting in front of their house they shut up though lol. Some people try to make me stand around all day talking or doing extra bits too and I make it pretty clear that they aren't in fact my only client and I have plenty of other people who can easily fill their spot if they annoy me. Like you I don't bother wasting time with them because I simply can't afford to worry about what they are doing.
Lol my dad had a customer last year who said the typical story of, "some kids used to do my lawn, and if I would like to do it" LOL For $15 $20 that doesn't even cover gas and normal wear and tear to that place and back lol

I mowed twice last week but I'm keeping it a little higher so it mulches better. It's getting so thick I had to slow down but I do mow with an electric mower. I'm retired so I have the time.

When you were talking about the Competition it looked like you missed edging the small side lol. About the mortgage, try to set up online bill pay. I pay mine on the Mr.Cooper application and it's done in less than a minute. No stamp/no fuel/ and stops extra interest the second it's paid. I hate interest because that's where my 4% robs me blind. I also pay extra so in the end the 4% could actually be 2%.
