Wonderful video. It helped me much. Thanks.
A great video!!I've got a stagg kit it's not that great but it's sounds a lot better since using the drum dial
Great Video
Thank you making this video very helpfull
got the digital version. very good. plus i don't have to tap the head like another tuning product.
DRUMDIALS are the Best..😊
Would you recommend a digital drum dial for bass drums?
hello,
I was trying to tune my 22 in bass and my resonant head reads 75 on one lug and less than 70 on other lugs alternating.
I already seated my head twice, in addition, my lugs are sometimes barely on and is at a higher reading where some lugs have resistance but are lower in tension.
Any advice?
Thanks
Kenneth, it sounds like you may have a problem with your hoop or bearing edge. See our trouble shooting video here: ua-cam.com/video/icTyHzpTOjU/v-deo.html
This will help.
Hey just a new acrylic vistalite kit. 22, 13, 16. Was wondering what tuning would be good for up and bottom.
I typically like a low tuning. Not chasing that Bonham sound. Using Evans Hydraulics on top.

I've been using an Evans 350 EMAD clear head for my bass drum. Due to the thick dampener, I can't use the drumdial against the rim, any advice? I just tuned it by ear the best I could but was wondering if you guys had a better idea.
rgkse Excellent question! With any dampening ring or foam (EMAD's etc.) tune to about 2 inches away from the edge of the rim. Use the inside ring as an easy gauge while tuning to the inside edge of the foam ring. The dampening will have little effect on the overall tuning.
How should i tune my set? Thanks a lot!

@@DrumDial Hi, thanks for the response! After reading some of your other replies & experimenting while hoping to hear from you; I hit on 79 , 77, 75 top and bottom for the toms & that seems to work... I like my toms up a little higher - the floor Tom especially sounds awesome. My kick drum also has more life in it now & the snare is sounding perfect.
I wish I’d bought my drum dial years ago. You also just saved me years of frustration with a snare I’d just bought... tried to tune it with the dial & had loose lugs... back to the shop it’s gone... gonna tune the next one in the shop to make sure those bearing edges are good from the get go! Thanks!
Hi ive come around to doing my bass drum, with an emperor remo coated,i have a pearl export kit and there's a problem, i can't tighten at 70 or lower with out lugs loose?, the original head was a pearl ss before i took it off, it was at 85 on most lugs way up there, and i took it off and retightened it with the new remo, and seemed to be able to get 75,but some lugs are almost loose and are at 77 ,maybe two of them,it still sounds good when it was a 85, but all the new remo coated skin's seemed to float different than the one's i had on before, i had two ply pinstripe remo's, and its almost as if the skin would pull themselves into the drum, as i would stretch them with my hands ,almost like they were not seating as well as the pinstripe's were, strange?,But i doubt anything is wrong with them, since they are the right size i got lucky with the 12" and 13" toms, but the bass drum is the main issue.any idea's ?.I realize your probley going to say theres a low spot, and could be some warpness, but i doubt that could be all the problem,i have in fact stacked my drums on eachother, with soft towel's underneath them over the years ,maybe this could be part of the problem not sure, thanks, chris.
christopher dunn Make sure that your tuner is calibrated. See the video here: ua-cam.com/video/4ojCsiocq70/v-deo.html
If your tuner is calibrated, you may have to tune to a higher setting. Ideally, try to get the head loose enough that there are no wrinkles and there are no loose tension rods. If you need to tune to 80 to make this happen, that will be your lowest possible tuning and you will not be able to tune any lower without getting loose tension rods.

OK to tune slightly higher if needed, just increase all by 2 tics to maintain the note separation between the toms. No need to go higher on the snare drum.
@@DrumDial Thank you so much! I will give this a try. Usually with the Performance II (I wrote powerstroke, lol) heads I tuned them at 72/70 because Aquarian states they are designed to be tuned lower. They always sounded good to me, but I will give your recommendation a try. Thanks again DD, it is a great product!

How would I get an accurate read on my Drum Dial when tuning my Evans EMAD batter head when there is that foam ring in the way? All other drums have been tuning fantastic with the Drum Dial by the way thank you :)
Tune to the inside of the foam ring.
That has been bugging me for a while, I have always tuned by ear, but I finally got tired of double bass pedal issues and bought another kick drum for my kit and tuning two kicks is alot harder than I thought and since I'm a perfectionist I finally broke down and bought a drum dial and after I got home it hit me, I have Gmads on both of my kicks how can I get to the edge when the dampening system is all in the way. So you're saying put the drum dial against which ever dampening ring I'm using and it will work?
@@Jarhead1313 Yes, just stay to the inside of the foam ring. No need to use the edge gage. Try to maintain the same edge distance. Easy to do with a clear head and stay to the inside edge of the dampening ring. Match your readings and your done.

Hi! Recommended setting setting for a 36” concert bass drum head?
85 is an excellent setting, at the edge of the drum for all concert bass drums and marching bass drums. The diameter naturally determines the pitch.

@@DrumDial must’ve read my mind that’s exactly what I was going to shoot for!!

Yes, directly on the line. Keep the same distance from the edge.
@@DrumDial thank you! What would you recommend for a Tama B/B 22“x18“ Remo PS3/Tama Reso, i‘d like to have a nice thump for Pop Music?
74 kick batter and 74 front resonant. We aim for the lowest setting with no wrinkles and the hardware does not rattle. We also recommend a bass beater patch on the bass drum head (Remo Falam Slam etc.) and some light internal muffling. If you have or add a front port (hole) to the front resonant head it will lower the pitch and the bass drum will have less of a concert bass drum sound and more of a pop sound.
best setting for 20X8 with emad batter and single ply reso with port hole. (yes, 20X8 - not a typo)

22" DW Collector's Series Bass Drum with new Evans EMAD Heavyweight "Level 360". After seating I'm getting readings from 72-74 around the head with just finger-tight lug tension. Am I doing something wrong?
Brian, excellent question and no, you are not doing anything wrong. The 360's have a slight tension already from the factory and will read as high as 75 at the edge without any tension on the hardware. Evenly tighten the new bass head to about 76-77 and then apply a downward palm pressure to the center of the head to help seat it. Loosen the head to 72 on the kick batter and front resonant. Just enough to where there are no wrinkles and the hardware does not rattle.
Thank you very much for the quick response and great information! I'll be giving this a try right now. I very much appreciate the well-presented and clear information from your channel!

The tension is already at or above 70 by the time I barely finger tighten. This isn’t right, is it?
I am using a 22” bass with a Remo p3 (brand new head).
Thanks for any insight.
The P3's are pretensioned. Set the kick batter to about 74-75 and the front resonant to 74. The head will settle in and will need to be retuned after playing for a little while. Otherwise, firm palm pressure to the center of the head and edges will help.

Just once I'd like to see someone using a drum dial while tuning Evans Emad series bass heads...I have Gmads and still can't get the sound I'm looking for...
Johnny, if using a DrumDial, tune to the inside edge of the Emad tone ring (about 2 1/2 inches from the edge). Kick batter set to 74 and front resonant set to 73. If tuning by ear, tune both heads to their lowest setting without wrinkles in the head and the hardware does not rattle. Use a Kevlar kick beater patch for more attack and longer head life.
