Oblivion was able to seriously astonish me. During the mages guild questline we see the archmage commit suicide to fire a black soul gem. For the purpose of defeating Mannimarco. While laudable this was astounding and left my jaw hanging. Could this be really happening? Traven must have known what this entails, that his soul would be eternally incarcerated and not reside in the heavens of the divine. It seems excessive, the act of a fanatic. To be sure, on the other side there were also lots of fanatics. The whole game has a plethora of them, particularly with the crimson dawn society. But to be mislead by the belief into a daedric prince is a lot more commonplace then giving up control of your soul for the common good. Perplexing.
I think it is more heroic than fanatic. Mannimarco had been a menace in Tamriel for thousands of years, potentially getting rid of him might have been worth the cost in his mind? I didn't play the quest, so the specifics elude me ngl.
I think as far as the goblins go, that their origin lies with the Ayleids, it's mentioned in the lore that some groups of Ayleids were adept shapeshifters and when the Alessians began their purges of the elves those Ayleids took the form of goblins to hide from the Alessians and that they stay in those forms for so long they became more and more like the goblins they hid amongst and ended up intermingling with them, which is where the goblins get their fashion of wearing feathers and where their magic abilities come from
Good old Janus Hassildor kept a low profile, no doubt he managed to stay around. Probably exchanging letters with Sybille Stentor chatting about wild vampires
I have a personal theory that the Jemane brothers in the quests Separated At Birth and Lost Legacy have a hidden past. Weatherleah is overran with Ogres, but all of the skeletons are inside of the house, a place that ogres shouldn't have access to due to their size.

You got the lore wrong Numidium was powered by the heart of Lorkhan not the heart of Arctus actually what arctus did was created a massive soul gem known as mantalla that allowed those of royal lineage too control the Numidium
So according to several sources, when Zurin Arctus re-powered the Numidium, he created the Mantella which is claimed to be from his own heart. His life force was then casted into it to give the Numidium life
He didn't. The Numidium was never actually powered by the Heart. The Dwemer tried that and vanished. Then the Second Numidium was similar, Dagoth Ur tried, but was defeated before it could get anywhere and then the Heart was destroyed/vanished.
I think it's pretty safe to say the conflict with the necromancers probably wouldn't have happened when it did or at least not to the same scale as it did if he hadn't of banned necromancy I don't think that's really in question. But I also doubt Mannimarco wouldn't have made some kind of move like that sooner or later, it wasn't vengeance for the ban he hates the University. Honestly to me that always reads as someone trying to suggest it was a mistake, when I'd argue the only mistake was taking that long to ban magic specifically about desecrating people's corpses and sacrificing people. They didn't even ban soul trapping just specifically using the souls of people which is pretty reasonable.

I think talos did kill akulakane, emperor 0, but it was in self defense and he made the story of the night blade up to protect his leader and father figure who he looked up to and loved..... story goes that akulakane called talos to his room late at night planning to have him done away with as he was the only danger to akulakanes power... the only man who could take the throne from him, but talos was too strong for his guards/lackeys and survived having had his throat slit... he created the story of the Breton night blade and lit the palace on fire to protect the idea of the man who raised him and allowed him to become the man he is.... that's my theory, and headcannon... it makes the characters sooo much more diverse... I imagine that akulakane didn't want to kill talos, and that when talos protected himself, killing akulakane, he was broken, most likely holding and speaking with akulakane, forgiving him and having akulakane line out why he did it... this would've taught talos a powerful lesson
Necromancy being legal is interesting because the things you need to do while practicing it are always so crime adjacent. Getting bodies legally is probably very difficult. You’d probably have to kill a bunch of bandits but we know that many necromancers aren’t making that effort and just taking the people whom are easiest to kill. Also, turning yourself into a Lich feels like it should be illegal because what else are you going to do besides kill and terrorize people? It’s what liches do. I know the goal is to replicate Mannimarco and to give yourself a perpetually youthful body but he’s the only one to ever do it and he has clearly committed many many crimes. I’m just saying that even if it’s legal, you’re probably committing a multitude of different crimes while practicing.

I've heard the standing theory on why Mannimarco doesn't *look* like a lich is that he's strong enough in illusion magic to appear human, but he is in reality a rotting corpse. Also to be fair, we don't know that he's the only one to ever achieve such a feat, he's just the only one that we know of to do so, which is a key difference. There could be a lich like him in every town and we'd be none the wiser, liches don't even leave a subtle trail like vampires do.

@@stebbenwolfe Yes, absolutely. Play as a glass canon illusionist in any of the games and you'll see that frenzy, calm, fear, etc. all persist after you've been beaten into a fine pulp. Also yes we are assuming that he is truly dead, which is also inherently a false assumption considering he was split in two due to the Warp in the West, his other self becoming the Necromancer's Moon. Even if we did kill him, he's not dead.

I think this series is great, my suggestion for it if you want/is possible: Try to refute those theories if you can, even if that would be unlikely. Might be an interesting thought exercise at times and make it less one-sided.
These are some interesting theories, but I don't really have much to say about them, with the exception of the Goblins and the Order of the Black Worm. My personal theories with both the Goblins and the Order of the Black Worm are as follows: -------- First, the Goblins. I've come to the conclusion that they have some Ayleid blood in their veins. Which might sound absurd at first, but hear me out: When the Ayleid slaves first overthrew their overlords, the Ayleids actually survived for a time, serving in the courts of humanity. Part of this was due to the fact that many Ayleid kingdoms were disgusted with the methods of the Ayleid empire, and ultimately turned against them. However, a faction of radical humans who utterly _despised_ the Ayleids ended up rising to power, and began a wholesale slaughter of every Alyleid they found. There is a theory in-game that some Ayleids may have survived into the present day, and they might be hiding out in some secluded forest somewhere. What if, instead of hiding in the forests, they hid in caves? Naturally, there'd be some Goblins hanging out in there already; If the Ayleids tried to wipe them out, it might draw the attention of the Alessians. I can totally see a few select groups of Ayleids being so desperate to avoid being noticed by the rising Cyrodiilic empire that they would resort to living alongside the Goblins; maybe some went so far as to _marry_ Goblins as a show of good faith. Over the years, a combination of interbreeding with Goblins and living for generations upon generations in pitch-black caves pretty much destroyed the Ayleids of old; the only surviving remnants of their presence is the inexplicable aptitude for magic on the part of the modern-day Goblins. My theory is that the named Goblin tribes seen in-game (Bloody Hand, Rock Biter, Dust Eater, etc.) are the end result of Goblin communities who interbred with Ayleid refugees. The random Goblins seen in-game without a tribe name or shaman are simply Goblin communities who never had any meaningful contact with Ayleids. I believe that the Goblins are indeed distantly related to Orcs, but have degenerated to the point where they are now effectively their own race (Similar to how the Falmer and the Snow Elves would be considered separate races, if the Snow Elves were still around). This would mean that some Goblins are technically hybrids of Ayleids and Orcs. --------- Second, the Order of the Black Worm. Knowing Mannimarco, I personally think he would've eventually attacked the Mages' Guild _anyway,_ necromancy ban or not. There'd still be his cultists, too. Sort of like how we see the Mythic Dawn recruiting from disenfranchised and vulnerable people to build their ranks. That being said, he wouldn't have nearly as many supporters, meaning he'd have to wait much longer to put his plans into motion. But if he is indeed immortal, that wouldn't mean much to him. I'd say it's likely that he already had plans to destroy the Mages Guild, or failing that, conquer it and reshape it in his image. But when Traven banned the dark arts, a great many mages (some of them quite skilled) left the Guild, either due to resignation or expulsion. This resulted in a great many people who were skilled in magic having no place to continue their research. And this, in turn, resulted in the Order of the Black Worm being their only option if they wanted to further the cause of magic. When you get right down to it, Mannimarco and his cult was be the closest thing to a proper organization of mages they could join. For the sake of comparison, imagine if the Fighters' Guild banned bows and arrows (for whatever reason). That would leave a lot of archers out of a job, and with no sense of belonging, not to mention they'd naturally feel pretty betrayed. Then the Blackwood Company rolls up and offers them a membership with them, instead. That would give the Blackwood Company a slew of new members practically _overnight,_ while also leaving the Fighters' Guild's membership utterly _gutted._ Well, we see a very similar thing happening to the Mages' Guild: Many practitioners of necromancy, who might've otherwise shunned the Order of the Black Worm for their extremist rhetoric, were pretty much _forced_ to join them out of necessity. Which had a double whammy of giving Mannimarco a _shit-load_ of new (and passionate) recruits, and dealing a crippling blow to the Mages' Guild. So, while I believe that Mannimarco would've found an excuse to declare war on the Mages' Guild regardless of the dark arts' status, his forces wouldn't be nearly as much of a threat had it not been for Traven's hardline stance against necromancy.

It’s something I’ll have to look more into! And I do see the perspective that an attack was likely imminent on the guild from the necromancers!
@@johnprager662 You might be onto something there; Mankar Camoran is a Bosmer who claims to be of Ayleid descent. Assuming he isn't lying his ass off, then it would make sense for some of the ancient Ayleids to flee into Valenwood.
@@NegativeDumpster To be fair, the 1st Era is dated by the founding of the Camoran dynasty in Valenwood. And their grip on the area stuck around for over 2700 years until Valenwood was conquered by the Second Empire. And even after they they still kept some level of power, even if it was as absolute as before. For the 300 remaining years of the 1st Era, the almost 900 years of the 2nd Era, and the over 400 years of the 3rd Era. And yes, according to a book in ESO some of the Ayleids did flee to Valenwood. So Mankar Camoran might indeed be of Ayleid descend. A lot of them also went to High Rock, so there might also a bit Ayleid in a regular Breton.

I was wondering that too! I also wondered what was happening in the other provinces during the Oblivion crisis! Like did Whiterun have Oblivion Gates open up inside its city, etc.
@@ABardsBallad Well we know some gates opened in Black Marsh because the Argonians forced Molag Bal's troops to withdraw completely from there sealing the gates to protect themselves. So probably safe to assume other provinces were hit.
@@ABardsBallad I think everywhere in Tamriel had oblivion gates I think there was a piece somewhere suggesting that the summer set had the Crystal Tower broken thanks to the Oblivion gates. As for the other continents like Akavir I would suggest looking at Michael Kirkbrides writings kinda hinting that Akivir and Tamriel have a different timeline of some sorts of say.
Considering the Imperial City sits right in the middle of Tamriel, the effect might be at least circular around it. Nobody would know how far exactly it reaches, because nobody needs to know. Yokuda is sunken, Akavir is hostile, Atmora is uninhabitable. Nobody would go there to check for any threshold where suddenly daedra run wild. Nobody would know if it is a physical distance around the city and/or Tamriel or a cosmological distance around Nirn or Mundus. And considering the planets are literal planes of existence that surround Nirn, we could assume that Mundus as a whole has lots of aedric protection. They wouldn't want to pop out on/in Stendarr for example. So it is safe to assume that the amulet and the dragonfires protect Nirn or at least part of it.
That’s a really great question! This one for me is so tricky because there are so many good theories out there of what happened to them! I might have to dedicate a whole episode just on those theories 😂
Two of my favorite theories are that they time traveled into the future (hence not gone just currently out of time) and that they got the insight (with the whole building god and such that they're not real, stopped believing in their own existence, and just zero summed themselves away.
Oh, and I just remembered that one sidequest in Skyrim, where you have to collect some stuff and do some tasks for one of the wizards there. His plan is to figure out what happened to the Dwemer. And tt ends with him hitting some modified soul gem with Keening and vanishing. He hits the soul gem five times, just like how the Nerevarine has to hit the heart of Lorkhan five times. And the heart was what powered the Numidium, which caused the Dwemer to vanish once activated. So lots of parallels there. But unlike the dwemer, once done, the player gains a spell to summon his spectre. Then there is the Mantella, which is also sort of a special soul gem used to power the Numidium. So perhaps the dwemer are soul trapped in the heart of Lorhkan. Or they went to the moons, which are possibly the corpse of Lorkhan. And since the planets in the sky are simultaneously the planes of the individual Aedra and also the Aedra themselves, the moons might be not so different, sort of like a bizarro version of Nirn. The plane of Lorkhan, who is sort of dead but also not. (Since his heart still works) And by "destroying" the heart, whatever happened to the Dwemer might be slowly reversing.
Theory 1. No Opinion. To me this doesn't seem important enough to study. Theory 2. This topic is WAY to deep to brush over in 3 minutes of a small section of a video. This topic requires a full video of it's own and would probably require 20 to 30 minutes or more just to get the minimum detail required to even properly debate the topic. I suggest the work of FudgeMuppet and Drewmora (half of fudgemuppet's own channel) which have heavy long deep dives on this topic. Theory 3. The orcs are Elves that were leaving Somerset to follow Veloth that remained loyal to Trinimac even after Boethiah ate him and pooped him out turning him into Malacath. What makes the Orcs or Orsimer kin to goblin as well as ogers is their god, Malacath. Malacath casts his protection over what he considers the outcast races. Orcs, Ogers, Goblins and other outcasts. Theory 4. Again here is another topic that warrants a much deeper study and longer video of it's own. There is so much nuance and detail that would take too much time to just brush over it so quickly. Your on the right track but there are many more details required to properly ponder the topic. For instance, Akatosh didn't even exist until Alessia created him to appease the Nords and the Elves under her new empire. Prior to her creation of the divines Akatosh did not exist, yet retroactively always existed. (Figure that one out.) Alessia took Shor and Auriel , two gods with completely different motivations, one to destroy creation and the other to protect it, and combined them. Hence why the depiction of Akatosh is both a dragon and a man. Man not Mer. Which one of these two sides of this schizoid god even appeared to her and bestowed the dragon blood in the first place? Since Auriel "killed" Lorkan for tricking and trapping them in the mortal realm and is an Elven god who supports the elves in their desire to return to aetherius would he even want to help the humans? Would he want to bestow the dragonborn gift on the last dragonborn to save the current kalpa? Without studying these deeper questions you can't even begin to understand the differences between dragonborn and dragonblood. Theory 5. Another on I don't place much importance on since the Mages Guild is disbanded shortly after the Oblivion Crisis anyway. By the time of Skyrim the Synod and College of Whispers have somewhat though very differently taken the mantel of this defunct organization.

I'd say it's likely that he already had plans to destroy the Mages Guild, or failing that, conquer it and reshape it in his image.
But when Traven banned the dark arts, a great many mages (some of them quite skilled) left the Guild, either due to resignation or expulsion. This resulted in a great many people who were skilled in magic having no place to continue their research. And this, in turn, resulted in the Order of the Black Worm being their only option if they wanted to further the cause of magic. When you get right down to it, Mannimarco and his cult was be the closest thing to a proper organization of mages they could join.
For the sake of comparison, imagine if the Fighters' Guild banned bows and arrows (for whatever reason). That would leave a lot of archers out of a job, and with no sense of belonging, not to mention they'd naturally feel pretty betrayed. Then the Blackwood Company rolls up and offers them a membership with them, instead. That would give the Blackwood Company a slew of new members practically _overnight,_ while also leaving the Fighters' Guild's membership utterly _gutted._ Well, we see a very similar thing happening to the Mages' Guild: Many practitioners of necromancy, who might've otherwise shunned the Order of the Black Worm for their extremist rhetoric, were pretty much _forced_ to join them out of necessity. Which had a double whammy of giving Mannimarco a _shit-load_ of new (and passionate) recruits, and dealing a crippling blow to the Mages' Guild. So, while I believe that Mannimarco would've found an excuse to declare war on the Mages' Guild regardless of the dark arts' status, his forces wouldn't be nearly as much of a threat had it not been for Traven's hardline stance against necromancy.

It’s something I’ll have to look more into! And I do see the perspective that an attack was likely imminent on the guild from the necromancers!
I think there were some Ayleids who fled South to Valenwood and mixed with the Bosmer. So they still exist through their Bosmer descendants.
@@johnprager662 You might be onto something there; Mankar Camoran is a Bosmer who claims to be of Ayleid descent. Assuming he isn't lying his ass off, then it would make sense for some of the ancient Ayleids to flee into Valenwood.
@@NegativeDumpster To be fair, the 1st Era is dated by the founding of the Camoran dynasty in Valenwood. And their grip on the area stuck around for over 2700 years until Valenwood was conquered by the Second Empire. And even after they they still kept some level of power, even if it was as absolute as before. For the 300 remaining years of the 1st Era, the almost 900 years of the 2nd Era, and the over 400 years of the 3rd Era.
And yes, according to a book in ESO some of the Ayleids did flee to Valenwood. So Mankar Camoran might indeed be of Ayleid descend.
A lot of them also went to High Rock, so there might also a bit Ayleid in a regular Breton.

I was wondering that too! I also wondered what was happening in the other provinces during the Oblivion crisis! Like did Whiterun have Oblivion Gates open up inside its city, etc.
@@ABardsBallad Well we know some gates opened in Black Marsh because the Argonians forced Molag Bal's troops to withdraw completely from there sealing the gates to protect themselves. So probably safe to assume other provinces were hit.
@@ABardsBallad I think everywhere in Tamriel had oblivion gates I think there was a piece somewhere suggesting that the summer set had the Crystal Tower broken thanks to the Oblivion gates. As for the other continents like Akavir I would suggest looking at Michael Kirkbrides writings kinda hinting that Akivir and Tamriel have a different timeline of some sorts of say.
Considering the Imperial City sits right in the middle of Tamriel, the effect might be at least circular around it. Nobody would know how far exactly it reaches, because nobody needs to know. Yokuda is sunken, Akavir is hostile, Atmora is uninhabitable. Nobody would go there to check for any threshold where suddenly daedra run wild.
Nobody would know if it is a physical distance around the city and/or Tamriel or a cosmological distance around Nirn or Mundus.
And considering the planets are literal planes of existence that surround Nirn, we could assume that Mundus as a whole has lots of aedric protection. They wouldn't want to pop out on/in Stendarr for example.
So it is safe to assume that the amulet and the dragonfires protect Nirn or at least part of it.
Goblins are orks in the same way as giants are nords.

That’s a really great question! This one for me is so tricky because there are so many good theories out there of what happened to them! I might have to dedicate a whole episode just on those theories 😂
Two of my favorite theories are that they time traveled into the future (hence not gone just currently out of time) and that they got the insight (with the whole building god and such that they're not real, stopped believing in their own existence, and just zero summed themselves away.
Oh, and I just remembered that one sidequest in Skyrim, where you have to collect some stuff and do some tasks for one of the wizards there.
His plan is to figure out what happened to the Dwemer. And tt ends with him hitting some modified soul gem with Keening and vanishing.
He hits the soul gem five times, just like how the Nerevarine has to hit the heart of Lorkhan five times. And the heart was what powered the Numidium, which caused the Dwemer to vanish once activated. So lots of parallels there.
But unlike the dwemer, once done, the player gains a spell to summon his spectre.
Then there is the Mantella, which is also sort of a special soul gem used to power the Numidium.
So perhaps the dwemer are soul trapped in the heart of Lorhkan.
Or they went to the moons, which are possibly the corpse of Lorkhan. And since the planets in the sky are simultaneously the planes of the individual Aedra and also the Aedra themselves, the moons might be not so different, sort of like a bizarro version of Nirn. The plane of Lorkhan, who is sort of dead but also not. (Since his heart still works) And by "destroying" the heart, whatever happened to the Dwemer might be slowly reversing.
Theory 1. No Opinion. To me this doesn't seem important enough to study. Theory 2. This topic is WAY to deep to brush over in 3 minutes of a small section of a video. This topic requires a full video of it's own and would probably require 20 to 30 minutes or more just to get the minimum detail required to even properly debate the topic. I suggest the work of FudgeMuppet and Drewmora (half of fudgemuppet's own channel) which have heavy long deep dives on this topic. Theory 3. The orcs are Elves that were leaving Somerset to follow Veloth that remained loyal to Trinimac even after Boethiah ate him and pooped him out turning him into Malacath. What makes the Orcs or Orsimer kin to goblin as well as ogers is their god, Malacath. Malacath casts his protection over what he considers the outcast races. Orcs, Ogers, Goblins and other outcasts. Theory 4. Again here is another topic that warrants a much deeper study and longer video of it's own. There is so much nuance and detail that would take too much time to just brush over it so quickly. Your on the right track but there are many more details required to properly ponder the topic. For instance, Akatosh didn't even exist until Alessia created him to appease the Nords and the Elves under her new empire. Prior to her creation of the divines Akatosh did not exist, yet retroactively always existed. (Figure that one out.) Alessia took Shor and Auriel , two gods with completely different motivations, one to destroy creation and the other to protect it, and combined them. Hence why the depiction of Akatosh is both a dragon and a man. Man not Mer. Which one of these two sides of this schizoid god even appeared to her and bestowed the dragon blood in the first place? Since Auriel "killed" Lorkan for tricking and trapping them in the mortal realm and is an Elven god who supports the elves in their desire to return to aetherius would he even want to help the humans? Would he want to bestow the dragonborn gift on the last dragonborn to save the current kalpa? Without studying these deeper questions you can't even begin to understand the differences between dragonborn and dragonblood. Theory 5. Another on I don't place much importance on since the Mages Guild is disbanded shortly after the Oblivion Crisis anyway. By the time of Skyrim the Synod and College of Whispers have somewhat though very differently taken the mantel of this defunct organization.
