      While doing this work, do you allow people to pet the puppy or do you tell them you are training a service dog and not allow petting? Curious.

    I'm still using my giant rabbit as my clicker training and shaping non-dog before I start a dog training program (CCPDT + mentorship) next spring and it's a lot of fun. I don't have a dog yet but I have a dog-sized rabbit, so that's neat. We have mastered cooperative care for eye cleanings for her chronic eye issue and she's improving so much. She goes to "place" (a corner of a whelping mat) and waits eagerly for her banana slice and eye cleaning twice a day. She will remind me if I forget, which is amazing. She now knows how to "spin" or do a circle, she can heel for a few feet (hilarious and weird, a rabbit walking instead of hopping), and pick up a ball on cue. Working with an animal that has such a short attention span is really teaching me how to be more engaging and fun.

      Train the bun to play basketball! I used to rescue and foster rabbits, I always potty trained them and taught them tricks before I found them a new home. My favorite was a chinchilla coloured holland lop, she was the easiest to train and she loved my first service dog. She would follow her around the house and lick her. She would allow my dog to groom her too. They were best friends, I wish I could have kept her but I ended up rescuing about 10 more animals after her. If I kept her, those 10 animals wouldn't have been in my care. I found her a very good home though.

      I liked the hoolar hoops scatter for footwork skill building.
      Curious about treat giving and avoiding nipping without pulling hands away. Also roll over. With Eps I didn't want presenting belly submissive behaviour to become a learnt thing to do (I've seen many little dogs and wary dogs that struggle to change).
      Now I feel she has confidence and boldness and could be ok to learn show me your belly. She is reluctant except when we are snuggle playing.
      When is a good time to teach that?
      Are you working on nails and teeth?
      Any tips to make that easier, especially back teeth?
      Was Denver wary with the noise of the letterbox opening?

      @@EpsilonAD I'm hoping to do a "how to avoid getting bitten so much" video over on Patreon for treat presentation, as I've had that question a few times.
      I don't really worry about teaching belly or when I teach it.
      I am working on nails - I haven't worked on teeth yet besides just lifting his lips. I feed raw and my dogs have always had excellent teeth despite my infrequent brushing so it's not on my priority list at the moment as there's just so much to do!

    This video was completely brilliant. Wish I'd had it 19mths ago when I brought my little baby land shark home. I kept asking my trainer what to do to stop her attacking my feet and did not get useful information and ideas in response. I love that you are showing and explaining the structure of it all. That's what I was sorely in need of to stop my overwhelm and worry about ruining her for what I hope she can become. Thankfully we are doing okay with our progress now but it's not been an easy road and my progress with her has been slow.
    Thanks for making these videos

It's invaluable stuff you are sharing and I am just really grateful to have access as I am on a pension so it's a struggle to afford more paid advice than the trainer we've found in our area. It's my trainers first go at a service dog and mine too so we are inevitably making mistakes...

      @DoggyU right, time to chew on the blanket in the crate. 😅 There are days when my puppy only gets a blanket at night because she's set on attacking beds and blankets. 🙄 A night she's usually getting enough environmental cues to chill. I do use white noise and thick blankets and dark rooms during the day, but it doesn't always work. She's a ball of energy.

  • @janhankins911
    @janhankins911 3 місяці тому

    I have a question for you. I noticed that you leave Denver's harness on him (there is another trainer whom I follow who does the same thing). I wondered why you do that. My little guys have long hair and I'd never leave their harness on when the aren't out on a walk or out with me somewhere--that harness will really make their fur mat if left on for too long. Second, my guys play together all the time (my guys are certainly not service dogs, they're just family members) and I'm concerned that they could get a tooth or nail caught in the one of the other dogs' harness. So when our dogs aren't "using" their harness, they aren't wearing them. Why do you leave Denver's harness on? Our dogs don't wear their collar at home, either (just when out with me) for the same reasons they don't wear their harness at home.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  3 місяці тому +1

      I leave his harness on for two reasons: because he's hopefully going to be a service dog, I relieve him on leash, and because he's 10 weeks old I don't have much time to put a harness on him if he needs to go *right now!* LOL
      Secondly, he wears a drag line in the house, so I need something to attach it to, and I don't attach drag lines to collars.
      He doesn't play with the adult dogs in the house at this time so I'm not worried about him getting it caught, and he's always supervised when wearing it. He is naked in the crate.

    how much does training for an autism and ptsd dog cost?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  3 місяці тому +2

      The cost of a service dog varies widely. Program dogs can be anywhere from 10k to 50k. Training your own dog can be anywhere for 2k on the very low end if you say, go to group classes only, to 20kish if you're getting a lot of professional help. This does not include the cost of a well-bred dog which is typically 2-4k or food, vet care etc.

    • @one_field
      @one_field 2 місяці тому

      Adding my own experience at a year and two months of training my own psychiatric service dog: $800 for the pup, $40 for AKC registration (came with lots of discounts on vet stuff, and multiple bags of free dog food over the first year), $100 for initial vet visit and chip, vaccines, deworming, $165 per 8-session dog training class (and we've done 3 rounds of classes so far), plus probably $100 in gear (harness, leash, collar, auto-treat dispenser recommended by DoggyU, belt pouch for treats). I already owned some crates, dog platforms and such, plus bowls, brushes, etc so that cut down on gear. I also supplement the food bill with home butchery (meat rabbits and venison), but I've probably spent $500 on dog food for the puppy himself during these 14 months. He is still in training but already has sufficient manners and skills to come with me wherever I need him, and perform service tasks that make it feasible for me to go without a human companion. So $2k is a very good estimate of the initial investment that has taken him from weanling puppy to a CGC (Canine Good Citizen test performed by AKC), well-behaved dog that can do what I need. With every further year, of course, he'll get more experienced, better behaved and more skilled, because we're definitely going to keep on training throughout his life.
      Side note, he's a big dog, so that influences the food costs, and purebred, which impacts initial purchase price. You might be able to find a good puppy for a bit less and your feed bill will be easier to cover with a smaller breed. We live in the Mid-Atlantic of the USA, so prices are moderately high. Also, I am home full time and have no offspring, so I can dedicate my time to training at any point throughout the day, ideally multiple times per day. If you work out of the home and won't have as much hands-on time, you may need to pay for professional training help, and that will rapidly increase the total cost.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 місяці тому +1

      @@one_field Thanks for sharing your experience! Our prices around here (CT) are significantly more expensive. First shots/visit for me was around $200 for the visit plus shots, 8-session classes around here run in the over $250 range. In other parts of the country it can be even more! Really interesting to hear how different parts of the country are priced! Appreciate it!

    • @one_field
      @one_field 2 місяці тому

      @@DoggyU The classes are through a local non-profit dog training club, not one of the commercial options like Petsmart training classes--those cost about the same as those in your neck of the woods. The initial vet visit was discounted because of the AKC registration deals, and I only got the ones you have to get a vet to apply (rabies and chip) there; the rest I ordered and administered at home, since I'm used to giving shots (farm life). So we might be more similar than it seems... but I think cost of living is generally more expensive up in New England, so you probably pay a lot more for dog food than you would if you moved down here to rural Virginia. OH and if you are ever tempted to do so, I will cheer, throw a party and help you move!!!
