My first teacher was Luella Howard, principal flutist with The Hollywood Bowl Symphony under Carmen Dragon, and at Twentieth Century Fox. She taught me lean forward a little to hit low notes and lean slightly back for higher notes. She said for low notes, think of your aperture as flat at the bottom and a wide dome on top. As you play lower in the right hand, the top dome gets a little bigger and goes forward a bit.
Carmen Dragon left us a legacy of music in his five children, the most famous is Daryl (aka The Captain, nicknamed by the Beach Boys).
I am obsessed with low notes especially low B
I don't comment much, but here are my 2 pennies... I never ever use a "smile" embouchure, ever. Relaxation is key in the lips, and tons of air in your belly... (I'm not going to use the SUPPORT term which EVERY flutist on Earth has heard at one time) I once heard Julie Baker say the great flutists, direct the airstream to the left corner of their aperture. So if your the type of player that wants huge sound think of pointing your airstream towards the left corner of your emboucure hole. Not into the flute or to the right, but the opposite direction. The greats all talk about the lower lip never covering more than half of your lower lip plate, and directing your airstream not straight across, or to the right, but left and towards your crown. I hope I'm explaining this correctly.. I've been playing for almost 40 years in groups all over the Bay Area, and am known for my huge sound. Btw- I play on a 14K Brannen body, with an original (by Lafin himself) platinum headjoint, Once owned by Demarre McGill. Good luck, working out your sound- btw- you sound great, don't be too hard on yourself. Happy flouting!!🎵
That’s so interesting, I will have to try playing towards the crown the next time I practice. I definitely also enjoy playing with a big powerful sound & have also been told I have a sort of “fire-ness” to my playing. Will be cool to see what effect it has on the sound!
I've heard of this but had forgotten about it recently!!! Thank you so much for reminding me!!
Thanks, I've tried to direct my air to the left of the e-hole because I found that difficult notes form faster and clearer. Now that I've heard this from another I will be sure to remember to do it.
The 'struggle' of low/chest notes...is a real deal! Such a beast. Low notes go 'up' high notes go 'down'....how in the world does that make sense? but it works!
oh my god I love the Octopath music I was so surprised to see that here
9:08 playing a piece that matches the pitch of the lawnmower is a perfect life hack
Can you please review a Trevor James copper alloy flute? I know you have reviewed the alto version of that one, but I would really like to see the flute version😊. I also really like to watch your videos, I have been watching them for a long time.
You are not alone with the air not being directed low enough into the embouchure hole. I discovered such when Sandy Drelinger "measured" me up for a headjoint.
We were talking last night about the Chained Echoes music. I'm only able to find recordings. Where did you find the printed music? Thanks
I'm no expert. Perhaps dont over do and over think the process... I suppose the aperture should be pretty flat and wide and relaxed to some extent, so the lips have to be broadened on low notes. I saw a clip of James Galway on embouchure. He seemed to press the mouthpiece/lip plate quite well against the lower lip, inwards and upwards.Great channel you have.
Oh my goodness you are so cute!!!!
