Nobody is talking about half reps, only speed and tempo. Which it doesn't matter at all, because when someone asks you how many you can do with a correct form, you will do them at your best tempo to achieve the max consecutive reps
💯 I can do 25 with slow negative. I don’t understand why people don’t do slow negatives for literally every movement they ever do, it’s a like a free half rep worth of strength and muscle gain on top of your regular rep. Been speed running my muscle building journey this way
@@lilGamer98X guess I'm old and misunderstood 🤦♂️ I agree with op. I don't fall into these amrep routines where technique suffers. I prefer to be slow as a tortoise, but steady in my way. Remember him? He beat the hare.
When I was younger I got up to the 60s, 70s with 2, 1, 1 tempo. I did pushups all the time then though and my aim was 100. 40/50lbs heavier and about 15-20 years older though... depending on the day I could go anywhere from 20/25 to 40 reps.
I used to think I can do 50 push-ups until I found out about strict push-ups. 2 years training at home and can do 43 strict push-ups. You really helped me out a lot during those 2 years.

In the recent past I was able to do 30-40. Then left shoulder pain knocked me out for a bit. After a couple years of what I thought was rehab/building back up was able to do 20+ (shoulder width, diamond, wide arm). The left shoulder pain came back even worse with tricep and pec pain too this March and knocked me out of arm work for a few months. Now 10-15 is all I got and the strength and visible muscular imbalance in my left chest/shoulder/tricep is unreal. Doing a lot of actual PT work with bands and the Y T W routine to help balance everything. Maybe I'll get it right this time.
I’ve always added tempo in all of my work out. You actually improve a lot faster that way. I was able to do 1 handed pushups, archer pushups, diamond, type writer and pseudo pushups In just 4 months
Yes. It depends. If you go fast, you can do more reps. If you go slow, you're gonna do less reps. Either way, you have to burn your muscles. That way you will increase strength and muscle mass each day. Reps don't matter.
My apprentice recently told me he's doing 300 pushups every day, but he's still built like a broom handle with all the wood scraped off. Something tells me he's not doing them with great form. Gotta give him credit for wanting to take control of his health though.
Nah it doesnt matter if he did it in bad form, he still should have gain muscles if he does 300 everday. If he didn't gain anything then that boy needs some milk😂
"It depends" is my answer to so many calisthenics questions I get from people. People always want to know how many pull ups I can do but that number is going to be dependent on so many factors
You know a push up professional from the way his body stays straight, after doing so many pushups, all the muscles that are used including abs and core get stronger allowing you to do straight pushups with ease.
Kaiser Permanente did a ten year long study on firefighters and the conclusion was that those who could do 40 pushups in 60 seconds were virtually heart attack proof. So, I do mine fast. If I'm not out of breath from doing other exercises first, I do around 60 in 60 seconds.
If going for strength, the goal should be to make the pushups harder. This will naturally result in fewer pushups than the average quick and relaxed up/down.
50 is the absolute most i ever done in a row ,i was also 30 lbs lighter, now 10 tp 15 with perfect push ups,but as an accessory excercise ,Dips have become my bread and butter last few months
I can do about 50 clean push-ups but pretty quick on the first 30. If I do very slow pushups, I can do maybe half of that. And if I do cheat reps, I can probably do close to 70
And the position of the arms also matter, when more is the distance between your ribs and elbows, more effort is putted on the pectorals, that are usually stronger than the biceps and triceps (and if they are not, something is wrong) Is not a "bad" tecnique, it depends on what muscle you want to train more
Those full range, controlled/powerful, shoulders over hands or past hands push ups are the truth. Now try 1.5s. Full negative, half way up then back down, then all the way up.
Yes the speed really matter to do more reps in pushup cause i can do 50 rep in speed While I can only do 30 Pushup slowly .At first i think i think i am doing wrong but after some time i find out the difference And yes it matter but doing Slowly help me a lot
I call it sprinting when doing them cleanly and also quickly as possible. Some call it cheating to do it fast. I call it sprinting. No one says it’s cheating when you run as fast as you can.
You are correct. Also if you want to see how much weight you're actually pushing you can put your hands on a bathroom scale. I like to check it every so often.
if you wanna fully develop shoulders you can push through the rep at the top (and extend the shoulders forward) it’s an extra movement for the traps and delts mostly
Pushups have been my main chest workout since I only workout at home and I don't have a bench press. Currently I'm doing weighted pushups with 25 lbs on my back. I kinda neglected upper chest though so now I'm doing them at a decline.
If I've learned anything in life it's that just about every legitimate, honest and thoughtful answer starts with 'it depends'. Quick answers tend to be grievous simplifications at best, most generally meant to either misinform or persuade you in some manner or another, rather than to inform.
Mate your weight plays a role!!! When i first started lifting weights, i was able to do 60+, I was very low in weight though. 58kg I think. Could of been more reps, again this is with proper form.... If it was me now. Maybe 25, im 85kg now!!!!
Normally "how many push ups can you do?" Will always be related to how many consecutive push ups can you do, doesn't matter the speed or tempo, or whatever, just needs to be a correct form. You need to execute your max reps performance at your pace in order to achieve your max reps.

Yep. Doing fast is way easier. Doing slow is harder but feels like more rewarding because it really hits the spots.
