  • Out of an abundance of love for my beautiful green polo, and for the fun of filming and editing a video, I've made a short video dedicated to my car as it recently surpassed 150,000 km.
    I want to keep this car completely original and stock (at least in terms of engine / exterior), but have some plans to tinker/ mod the car in other ways. If there is anything you'd like to see do leave a comment and maybe I get around to doing/filming it.
    For the exact specs of this car:
    Polo 9N MkIV, Variant: SC AZQX01
    Year: 04 (Prod. 11/2003 in Pamplona, Spain / sold & first registered in 06/2004 in Utrecht, Netherlands)
    Engine / Trans: 3 cylinder, 5-speed manual,
    1.198L 4-stroke, petrol 47kW (64hp) @ 5400 RPM,

    This was my first car at 19. Exactly like this one in terms of engine but mine was a five door and silver. Had it for 5 years, never gave me a problem. Bought it at 58k kilometres, sold it at 94k km. I miss it with all my life. Never sell your first car boys.

    Great car, I have a 2005 9n;1.4litre; 4-cylinder; 5-speed in Australia (made in South Africa), and it's been a really solid and reliable little car. Now at 157,000km.

    This 9N Polo car is in great condition and well looked after! Congratualtions on the 150,000 km. Polos rule. I use the BME-engine 64 bhp 1.2 12 valve in my 2007 Polo. The one problem, it needs six gears. 60 mph (100 km/h) is 3000 rpm in fifth. It gets busy when drives fast. It gets around 50 mileage to the gallon so I shouldn't grumble.

    • @P0L0G0D
      @P0L0G0D  9 місяців тому +2

      Completely agree. If I could change something would be 6th gear, and better sound dampening for highway. Maybe down the road I could install a 6 speed, but sadly none of the 2002 polos came stock with one, even the 1.4L, so I'm guessing it isnt a simple swap. For now it will do the long drives, mpg good, and for my primary use case of short drives, it does the trick. :)

      I totally agree, I’ve got the same polo, it isn’t really built for motorways, I did drive 640 miles in one day and it certainly did very well considering it’s a 1.2, but it wasn’t fun

    • @aden3113
      @aden3113 7 місяців тому +3

      I have a seat ibiza 6L 2004 which is basically a rebadged polo 9N, mine has the 1,4 four cylinder (BBY) instead of the 1,2.
      I agree that the car isn't really made for highways as the engines rev at like 3500 rpm at 120 km/h (75 mph) and road/wind noise is pretty intrusive. The problem with these cars (and most small cars) is that the petrol engines are gutless and have basically no torque or power below like 3000 rpm which is why they're limited to five gears instead of six. They could put a sixth gear but it would be extremely sluggish and practically useless. Overtaking would be basically impossible and the car would even have trouble maintaining speed uphill on a windy day. Overtaking on fifth gear already requires some planing and can't be done in a rush.

    • @nivens.1604
      @nivens.1604 Місяць тому +1

      I would agree but that would make top gear at 60 useless, being such a small engine it really does need to spin over 3k revs to make sufficient power to hold the car at that speed; any less and it doesn't breathe well enough. Try flooring it at 40, it will pick up but it won't be responsive. Compare that to the same thing at 60, it has just about got the power to overtake. It's not ideal but it's quite well judged

    • @owensteele1645
      @owensteele1645 Місяць тому

      @@nivens.1604 I still have my 2007 Polo 9N3, BME unit. I still enjoy it. I think its low-end torque is quite decent, it feels strong in the low rev-range. I always drive it gently and it just gets on with the job. I've learned to live with the Polo's hard-working nature as a motorway car, it needs to be at 3000rpm at 60mph so it doesn't feel like an underpowered car. It's still averaging 52mpg. My old 1997 Rover Mini Cooper 1.3 MPi used to be the same although it made much more noise at said speed.

    I have also a 9N since more than 20 years and now 370.000 km. The AXR engine (1.9 TDI; 74 kW) is running until today without any problems with a fuel consumption less than 4 l/h. I do not use it during the winter mounth with salty road condtions, it helps, to keep the material in good condition.

      That is awesome! I would love to drive a 1.9 TDI. For sure if you keep these cars off the road in winter they will last, and you've put some proper km on the clock. The only issues I see coming through rn is chasis rust here and there, but my car sees all year use rn.

    My first car was, and still is, a silver 5 door 2004, same engine. Mine is missing a few small things like the centre sun visor and the seat trays, because it's a twist not an se, but still. For the money, I really don't think there is a better car. Never given me any trouble (that wasn't my fault), always got me where I needed to be, when I needed to be. It has impressed me at times as well, when you really press on, how well it holds on to speed for such a little engine. Also how stable it is at v-max, very impressive for such a small car

    I've owned a 9n (from 2005) almost exactly like yours for over 1.5 years now, except in blue, and with added cruise control and auto-dimming rear view mirror (same engine as well), I think it's a really great reliable car and I have no plans to sell it any time soon. Also, embarrassingly, for these 1.5 years I've never noticed the right steering wheel stalk has buttons on it to change the screen on the dash, which I now know because of your vid, thanks :) I will try it out tomorrow :P

I've got the 1.4 5 door version and except locks not working correctly I have had 0 mechanical issues and generally it had no mechanical issues overall except changing starter motor after 202.000. For a car to purpose a point A to point B trip even for 300km distances rocks hard and solid.

Great spec and great car, love these things.

      Ι have the same exact issue with the passenger door so I usually unlock the vehicle from the passenger door. because my back left door doesn't unlock at all anymore, I do believe that it's not the module since it came with no errors via odb scanner but the locks themselves. Found replacement locks for 27 euros each but it's a hassle to change them and I dont have the tools or the space unfortunately

    One of the worst cars I've ever driven. Despite being in perfect condition, it feels extremely unresponsive, lifeless and has absolutely 0 seat support as the car will throw you around like a ragdoll in even a simple roundabout no matter the suspension setup. Replacing the alternator was an absolute nightmare and the weird engine plastic cover also being the air intake box is just weird and bad design, not to mention just about all of the screws are metal on plastic meaning cross threading is super simple even for an air filter change. This is easily the worst car I have ever driven and for comparison, the cars I've driven are: Honda Accord 1998 CG5 2.3L, Mazda MX-3 V6 (EC), Nissan Micra K11, Nissan Micra K10, Honda Civic 2009 1.3 Hybrid, Audi A4 1.8T 2004, Audi A6 2.0 2009, VW Touran 2017 1.9 TDI, BMW E46 2004 1.8, Ford Probe 2.2 GT 1993 and a couple more BMW's and a shitty Opel, I'd choose absolutely any of these cars over this Polo. It's bland, boring, unresponsive, ugly and prone to rust. This guy will talk about "fully adjustable seats made of cotton" when these are the most basic unsupportive hard seats I've ever felt in my entire life. Move on, don't get a 9N unless you're just an A to B driver, and even then I'd not really recommend this over pulling a random Micra, Civic, Golf, A3 or just about anything inside that category like a Yaris.
