      @@JarrodsTech Yeah, I ordered mine from HIDevolution, with a Liquid metal Repaste as well as Premium Thermal Pads. :) Hopefully, with an undervolt, I would be able to get acceptable results. Looking forward to more videos for the M17. Hopefully, the RTX2060 that I got with my unit would be more than enough to run games comfortably at 1440p... I would have preferred if it came with a High Refresh Rate 1080p panel instead, bit it is what it is and the RTX2070MQ is just a disappointment on all fronts.

    Seems like the performance is a little low? My buddy has a 2060 in his with the 7700HQ and he gets about 95FPS on WOW high settings used.

      It is thermal throttling on the GPU, I cover that in the full review linked in the description, so there is performance loss. That said, I did not test WOW, so not sure what you're comparing with out of my results.

    Just like every other Alienware, you’d probably see a significant improvement with an undervolt, repaste (or even better with a Graphite pad in my experience!), and raising its bum off the desk. Not something a consumer should have to worry about, but seems par for the course with most thin n lights. Makes you wonder how much cost some simple tweaking would add to the laptop from Dell’s side, as it would improve the end user experience quite a bit.

    Great video. A bit disappointing with the throttling. I wonder if it will even be worth spending the $350 for the i9 even considering other laptops don't really show the benefit due to throttling. Also really odd screen choices compared to the competition. This was the one laptop I was worried might give me buyers remorse on my gx701. I upgraded from an Alienware 13 (OLED), and the keyboard is fantastic, the build quality is great (though I'd give my gx701 a slight edge, but both top tier IMHO). The m17 is about 30% bigger and doesn't have gsync though. Thought about waiting for the OLED since I loved my OLED (though prefer gsync + 144hz instead given the choice), though the rumors seemed to be 4k OLEDs, which are pointless in a gaming laptop IMHO. Either way with the performance so far that really makes me sad (even if it makes me happy for my choice itself).
    It's interesting to see that the gx701 does a good 10%-ish better than this (like it does the gs75 based on other reviews) despite this having the 90w bios. I wonder if undervolting might net big gains in this case (basically -maybe- approach what the gx701 can do stock) or if the thermal design just can't handle it. If so repasting seems likely to be essential to get full performance out of these non-gx701 2080 max q laptops (and flashing the vbios apparently like some people are doing to get the 90w version on 80w stock ones). Of course I'd then be interested in the gx701 being repasted and see how far the overclocking (CPU and GPU) could be pushed with the thermal design.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому

      Thanks! The i9 might actually be ok, I didn't see thermal throttling on the CPU, just the GPU, though in the upcoming thermal video I do speculate that adding the i9 and dumping in more heat might would result in even more throttling on the GPU under combined CPU/GPU load.

    • @M4ttNet
      @M4ttNet 5 років тому

      @@JarrodsTech It seems like our fears are confirmed by the latest notebookcheck review on the i9 version of the m17
      "The less expensive i7-8750H in the Alienware m15, for example, performs within 2 to 3 percent of our i9-8950HK according to CineBench R15 benchmarks."
      Theirs cinibench multi score was almost identical to the gx701 (though the single core was a bit higher).
      The gx701 did anywhere from 6%-24% better on 3dmark results. Like your results the gx701 did better on gaming benchmarks too.
      Such a shame since I think the alienware laptops feel the best in regards to build quality (if not the most premium feeling) and the keyboards are fantastic IMHO. Of course I haven't tried an "m" version which I know is less reinforced than their thicker versions (which is what I have a 13" OLED version of).
      I'm also dissapointed to see the m15 get the OLED screen, but a 4k 60hz version. For gaming I would never get a 4k screen (though it'd be great for design work etc)... Was waiting for an alienware 15/17" OLED 120/144hz screen (1080p or 1440p). That would be perfection IMHO. Based on the rumors I decided to hold off and now not regretting my gx701 purchase.

      Basically I cannot benchmark this laptop at 1440p because it does not have a 1440p screen. The 4k screen cannot be set to run at 1440p. I could however connect an external 1440p screen with mini DisplayPort, but the results there are not fair or accurate. The display output on the laptop are wired directly to the Nvidia graphics, so using an external monitor would perform better than if the laptop had a native 1440p screen, because the laptop screen uses Nvidia Optimus the display signal gets sent from the Nvidia graphics to the Intel graphics then to the display - there's an extra layer of overhead, something that does not exist when simply plugging in an external screen. Alienware just needs to go back to the thicker chassis and put proper cooling inside the laptops. $3000+ US for a laptop that thermal throttles inside a thin chassis just seems to be a bit much for what I would look for. I would rather pick the RTX 2060 or the GTX 1660Ti when it releases in mobile form and be done with it and save a lot more money that way, but that’s just me.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому +1

      I think they definitely need to do something to improve thermals under combined CPU/GPU load, given there are other thinner machines with the same specs that perform better out there for a similar price point (eg ASUS GX701).

    • @zgoaty9235

      I know the past couple of years Dell and Alienware haven’t had the best reputation when it comes to thermal paste application in their laptops, and it might be the case with this one as well. I think the Alienware 17R5 I have might have a thermal paste issue, but I need to take it apart and check. It has the i9 8950HK and I have it running at 4.3 GHz on all cores, as that’s how fast I can run it without too much thermal throttling, and I’ve also set a pretty aggressive undervolt on it as well at about .167 mV on the core and .125 mV on the cache using Throttlestop, with the power limit set to around 65 - 70 W of power draw. Even then it can still hit the upper limits on the temperature but it doesn’t seem to thermal throttle at the very least. The GPU is a 1070, which does fine for me in my use case.

    The screens are kinda bad. The 1080p screen option is only 60hz. The 1440p screen is 120hz however it is a TN panel on a high end laptop like this is should be at a minimum an ips screen. Also 4K is too demanding to run.

      I agree, would have liked to seen 1080p 144hz, though at least 1440p higher refresh rate is an option, not many companies are doing that. The 4k screen looks amazing and isn't really for gaming in my opinion, good for photo/video editing
