We homeschooled both of our kids-one retired at 30 and lives off their pension-the other went to college in China, graduated with 2 degrees, and Is a software engineer for a large computer consulting company
I homeschooled all 11 of my kids from 1991-2020! I just used my own different curriculum but I did use some A’beka a number of times! You guys are great! My husband passed in2020 and I just enjoy watching you all so much. He always wanted to move to Alaska!
Kids need the social interaction, so they should go to a regular school when they reach high school age. A classroom environment will prepare them for college. Also, they’ll miss out on the fun activities that high school has to offer
Homeschooling is one of those situations where it works for some and not for others. The beauty of it is, its always there. homeschooling (or not) may work one year but not the next. Do what works for you. 🙂
Love that life skills which everyone needs to function in life. Grocery store outing shows them to make menu and budget to help them be self-sufficient when on their own. Kids need more of this!
I loved this video especially when your dad took the kids to the store for them to be responsible for staying within a budget for dinner way to go teaching them responsibility in the store love love love.... and then they cooked dinner OMG
It just dawned on me how long I've been watching your videos! When I started watching you were at the old house and your kids were just babies! Now they are cooking dinner for you! You have raised some amazing humans! 🥰💖✨
As a fellow homeschool graduate, I appreciate seeing how other families homeschool and hearing what subjects are favorites! Being homeschooled was such a blessing growing up, I hope to also teach my children at home someday.
Love you guys! We also decided to homeschool after our youngest was retained in 1st grade for learning challenges. BEST DECISION EVER! He just turned 16 and has excelled. So much so that he will graduate next month! We chose to use Switched on Schoolhouse for our curriculum. It has been a great tool! Blessings to you all from NC.
We h.s.'d oldest three through jr high and the baby through highschool, doing dual enrollment at the jr college and earning her AA before turning 18. 1) software sales rep. 1) police officer 1) NICU nurse 1) s.a.h.w.
That was so sweet and they stayed within the budget. You all ROCK THAT!! GREAT DINNER and I LOVE HOW ALL THREE CHILDREN WERE INVOLVED WITH DINNER. Love the Day in the Life Vlog. Thanks for sharing.
Hello. Long time watcher but first time commenting. I find your family to be such an uplifting few minutes in my day. Also I would like to send out a prayer request for my father who just recently got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Bert and Jessica you both are wonderful parents. I love this day in the life. The kids are so much better off being able to to do homeschool. I think they learn so much more. So we'll grounded. I can see these three making their mark on the world in a very positive honest way. I'm proud of you. Love you guys and stay true to God and yourselves. Have a great weekend. Love from Liberty North Carolina.
That music during the dinner montage sounds SO close to the "last days of september" song that I had to rewind the video and hum the lyrics along with it to make sure I wasn't going crazy.
What a wonderful family. You’re both the best parents and are teaching your children the right things… Stay safe and well and thank you for sharing all that you do with all of us
You and your family show a wholesome life… I love watching your videos ! Garrett , such a sharp shopper & such a sweet mature little man :) Ladies -/ you are all a gleaming example of maturity , responsibility and so respectful…..the world needs more of this - it’s rare …. Bert - Jessica - YAll rock ! Solid !!! Very inspirational and positive thinking couple ! Your guidance with creating and producing the wholesome young man and ladies -this hard world is gonna need a lot of Sharp , responsible , respectful and humble….. It’s rare ✝️❤️🤗👏👏👏👏
I wasn't home schooled, but was taught in a church with classrooms that used ACE workbooks. I loved being in a smaller class room where the teacher can work with you one on one. I loved working at my own pace & made lots of great friends.
We homeschool too-preschool, 4th grade, 6th grade and 8th grade. We are eclectic homeschoolers. Homeschool is the way to raise a family in this evil secular world. We started homeschooling when COVID hit and as long as God provides, we will continue until my kids graduate.
Good choice to homeschool with ALL the is going on at schools and what they are being taught that MANY parents didn't even know! AND being in Alaska, I think just the driving to and from would be hard most of the winter... AND having meals together to really talk and keep up with your kids. AND extra activities like gymnastics and just them learning life skills seems better... Thanks for letting us see your typical day.
I knew a girl many years ago who grew up in Alaska 'schools only closed when it was minus fifty-five because cars don't always start at that temperature' ... that would have been 30 years ago and things changed but I would hope my parent's homeschooled me at those temps! LOL One thing about the virtual school that happened two years ago -- it got more parents involved in their child's education!
I believe the perception of homeschooling has changed quite a bit since I was of school-age. I see pros and cons for both. It looks like the two of you are doing a great job with it. Thanks for sharing.
Hello There Somers Family... So glad to see you. It feels like its been forever since we've seen you...I remember 53years ago when it was time for my oldest daughter to go to school I tried thinking of ways to keep her home and not send her to public school. Well we ended up sending her and then when we had our other daughter was born both to Catholic school...There was no such thing as Home School... Its really a blessing to have this option of choice due to what I hear the public schools are teaching the children...Good to see the kids grocery shopping for dinner and then cooking the meal.I love your little family and your fur baby🐕 God Bless All of You LuvYa! Bye from Ohio
Audrey, Evelyn and Garrett.. having watched all 3 of you grow up from watching the channel over the years, I'm super proud of all of you for your caring and compassion and your love for each other and everyone in general. You set such a great example for other kids and on how to succeed in life. 💚
Green leaves in Wasilla today..just a few, as the snow is still melting :) But this is the earliest I’ve seen in over 50 years. Former private school secretary with accommodations for home schoolers. Alaska is great for home school, love that you are doing it so well - hard tho it can be at times. Bless you all, appreciate your channel.
I am so impressed with you children and the valuable lessons you teach them. You have taught them kindness, generosity and compassion. You also teach them like skills. So many teenagers get out of school and don't know how to turn on an a washing machine or oven let alone cook anything!
Loved the video! More parents are choosing to homeschool in my area of the US. I love that the kiddos are learning about budgeting and working with money! ❤️👏🙏🇺🇸👍😊
I love how you teach your children the basic skills of life and being kind and generous. Your children will become wonderful adults due to your teachings and love for other people. I love your channel and look forward to each new one.
Your family is so refreshing to watch, with all going on in our world it is wonderful to see hard working, church going and loving people still around. Love all that you do with your family and community. Thank you for sharing little parts of your life with so many.
My husband and I have talked about either private Christian school or homeschooling our future children. We really want to be able to influence them in a loving & positive manner when they're young & give them the flexibility to work more in depth on a struggling subject or to advance if they're killing it. I love that you guys do the same for your kids! Great inspo
Homeschooling is pretty hard here. Not many do it and it's expensive. Enjoyed your video and loved how the kids were able to get dinner under a budget. Great job guys 👏. Love from the island of Guam 🌴💗🌴
Try looking into Christian Liberty School System (Class) in Illinois. We used them all the way through from k-12. Very affordable. They have two plans. One where you keep the records and one where they do. We did each child for less then 1000 a year. In grade school about 400-800.
If you are interested in homeschooling, but concerned about the cost I encourage you to look into The Good and The Beautiful. They offer their Math and Language Arts curriculum free for download on their website. If you do choose to buy a hard copy, their prices are very reasonable. There are many free and affordable options, you just have to do a little research and find what fits your budget and works for your family.
Teaching your kids how to shop and budget and prepare a meal is just as important as learning math and history. I'm always impressed when I see them make a fire and drive snow vehicles. You are totally teaching them all the skills they will need to become good adults. And good for Audrey. In twenty years when she is old enough, I would totally vote for her for President!
I really liked public school but that was 40 years ago. For my kids, there weren’t laptops or lots of homeschool curriculum available when they were growing up so they went to public school. I honestly believed there was no way I could homeschool well and I also didn’t have the desire. And that’s okay. Happy that it’s working out for you and your kids! There’s so many more people doing it now and a lot more resources.
Love the kids going to the grocery store to buy dinner. They did a great job!! Did that with my kids one time. My daughter kept making my so put things back, he was spending way too much !! Love your family !!! 😀😀😀😀😀
I'm homeschooling our girls. After you mentioned Abeka, I checked them out. I didn't love that the teacher was in a classroom interacting with students. I just thought that would be confusing to my 6 yr old. So I went with BJUpress which is just the teacher. But I wouldn't have found them or had any clue about DVD curriculum if It wasn't for you mentioning it. It has saved us this year! We have four kids 6 down to almost 2. So while I'm still very much chasing toddlers😅 my oldest has been able to learn to read and has done really well with the curriculum. She's also an independent learner so it's worked out great!
We had problems with our son being bullied and school didn’t do anything. When covid hit and schools shut down they went to virtual, Edmentum. He has done it since then and is finishing up his sophomore year!
... Loved this day with the Somers Family ... Every day has lessons to learn ,, not only the education curriculum ,, but life skills ..... like planning and buying the dinner's meal items ,, but having over 25% left over for desert ... You Go Somers Shoppers ... ....And who else to be part of preparing your dinner than ... President Audrey ..... Great Parents raising great people for the future ...
I really applaud your fam for incorporating real life skills such as shopping and budgeting as part of the learning experience. This is something that public schools sorely lack, much to the detriment of the kids who then at 18 have no or very little experience managing money and a household. It’s unfortunate that we as a society fail to include this in formal education yet then expect 18 yr olds to make sound financial decisions.
We enjoyed this video. Please include more every day family activities such as getting your garden ready for planting this spring and actual planting as well as harvesting. We also love to see places in your area.
❤️ learning about the kids’ schooling and watching them shop for dinner & prepare… you guys are raising champions! They are definitely mirroring the two of you❣️👏👏👏
My children both went through A Beka. One is in her 3rd year of college and the other is a JR. In HS. A beka is def a really great curriculum. My daughter went through 12 years of A Beka and my son went through the 8th grade. He now uses a HS virtual homeschool program with AP courses. I used Abeka as well growing up. Back in the day it was ACE , Bob Jones or A Beka. Now there's tons of options. Love that you both do lots of things with your kids.
Love this family, Bert you were brilliant with your children shopping, very encouraging and teaching them important skills for life. I always feel positive inside after I have watched you guy's. Sending Peace to your family xx
Happy Friday, SOMERS. I hope you’re having a good day. The snow continues on melting in Alaska. It’s getting close to May. Lots of UA-camrs are into DAY IN THE LIFE videos on their UA-cam channels. Plus, kids and teens do homeschooling ever since Covid 19 happened. I like these DAY IN THE LIFE videos. DAY IN THE LIFE is when people shows what they do in their lives. I hope you SOMERS have a good day. Stay safe. Continue on your road on getting the giant gold play button
I never homeschooled but I worked at my 2 daughters high school for eight years. I was fortunate to see their grades and speak with their counselors in putting them in the magnate classes. Both daughters are successful college graduates 🎓
I homeschooled family t 15 years and used ABeca also. Loved them. Burt’s comments about what they are being taught was our reason also, plus religious reasons. Blessings Helena Montana
You just saved my bacon this week. I had watched one of your videos where you mentioned Apple Cider vinegar pills and kidney stones. A week ago I started getting a twinge on my side, mid back. Thought I might have tweaked it but nothing happened. It kept persisting, but remembered when you said your pain started similarly - took ACV pills for a few days and no more pain! Don’t know if it was all in my head - but it worked - thank you!!!
My daughters are 31 and 29 and I used Abeka back in the day when I homeschooled them. That was in the stone age when it was all workbooks and pencils lol!!! Love your videos ❤️
It was a fun video. You're teaching the kids so much besides education. It takes each family member working together to make a family work. Be blessed. Love the Somers.
Was so excited to see that you use the ABeka curriculum for your kiddos. It is the best. God centered and wonderful teachers. I had the blessing to work at a Christian school for over twenty five years. May God bless you all.
I loved hearing Audrey say she wants to get into government or run for President!! That’s awesome! I loved History too. I homeschooled our daughter and it was a great experience. It brought our family closer.
I used to do the very same thing with my kids! To this day they can get the biggest deal for the buck. A list, money, and they made it happen! Awesome job Bert!
Really enjoyed this Vlog!! Incredible interaction of the two of you with your kids!! Nothing is wrong with Home Schooling! When we moved here to Ruskin we almost put Kaylee now 9 into Home Schooling! I was NOT against it as her grandparent who is living with her,! Each child works at their own pace and not all kids like the huge environment of a school structure! Yours are getting that positive interaction with Gymnastics Kudos for the shopping trip! Kudos for the adoption and the love the two of you are teaching your kids about the respect of the prior generation!!!!!!
Awesome that you are teaching the kiddos to meal plan and budget. Those are two things that most schools neglect teaching to students. Here is a little tip: Add a diced onion, diced bell pepper, and a can of diced tomatoes to your spaghetti sauce. It stretches your sauce farther, and makes it taste better by adding garden "chunks" to it. Canned sliced mushrooms works as well. And a little Parm cheese to top it off is wonderful.
@@emmib1388 But it is the school's job to teach math and economics. Budgeting can be easily wrapped up in that. As for meal planning, several of my high school classes touched on this but they were all elective classes. Who knows if they still have them. I sure don't.
@@Rebelrocker69 while you can learn the basics of math and economics in school, it would be the parent's job to reinforce it at home -- similar to the Somers where they have the child put what they learned into regular use . regarding meal planning, I don't think most schools have home ec any more unless you are going to vo-tech for a career in that field.
My daughter was homeschooled in grades 5 thru 8 with ABeka. Then enrolled into a Christian School for the remainder. I enjoyed that program. She is 35 yrs old now.
Your family is just too cute. I’ve been a loyal sub for a little over a year now & I must say that you guys are one of the most positive spirited UA-camrs I see. Also I admire the way you two parent; to me it seems like such a practical & loving way of parenting. I only have one 2 year old boy at the moment but I hope to grow my family to have at least three kids. Thank you bunches for the inspiration to be a better parent/human, just by showing us your true colors.✨
We homeschooled our youngest, just not enough interest with our older ones. Our youngest thrived on it. Some do better in a school setting. Out of our 2 older grandkids, one loves going to school and is 11th grade but her younger sister loves homeschool. You’re doing a great job!!
That, in my opinion was an economics class field trip coupled with a business classroom that teaches budgets, assets and debits...the kids cooked that meal and served it wonderfully. This basic stuff is hardly touched upon in public classrooms anymore.
We homeschooled both of our kids-one retired at 30 and lives off their pension-the other went to college in China, graduated with 2 degrees, and Is a software engineer for a large computer consulting company

One of the most important life skills, budgeting!!! Well done kids!
Bert, teaching shopping is a great thing to teach. Budgeting, things like that should be taught, and as you said, it's also fun.
Loved how Bert took the kids to the store , how he let them figure dinner out and budget
The kiddos did a wonderful job at the grocery store !! Great job on cooking dinner for the family! I’m so proud of y’all
Love that life skills which everyone needs to function in life. Grocery store outing shows them to make menu and budget to help them be self-sufficient when on their own. Kids need more of this!
You are my favorite family UA-camrs. You are so down to Earth and are Christ centered. May God’s blessings be with you all today tomorrow and always.
I loved this video especially when your dad took the kids to the store for them to be responsible for staying within a budget for dinner way to go teaching them responsibility in the store love love love.... and then they cooked dinner OMG

It was a great exercise for the kids to use their knowledge in every day life ! Like budgeting for a dinner for the family for X amount of money.
Homeschooling is such a blessing, for both the parents and the child.
We h.s.'d oldest three through jr high and the baby through highschool, doing dual enrollment at the jr college and earning her AA before turning 18. 1) software sales rep. 1) police officer 1) NICU nurse 1) s.a.h.w.
I homeschool my son. He doesn’t get bullied anymore he loves it. It’s expensive but it’s worth it.
That was so sweet and they stayed within the budget. You all ROCK THAT!! GREAT DINNER and I LOVE HOW ALL THREE CHILDREN WERE INVOLVED WITH DINNER. Love the Day in the Life Vlog. Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely love the hands on teaching about sticking to a budget! Love making education fun! You are an exemplary family! God bless!
You're children are so adorable!! Love watching them grow up
Loved this video. Showing a normal day was successful. I love the fact that you teach your children everything basic to sustain life.
Being a retired teacher, I found this pretty cool! Great job!
It's so great how you're teaching your kids how to shop and cook, great job. I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend.❤
Hello. Long time watcher but first time commenting. I find your family to be such an uplifting few minutes in my day. Also I would like to send out a prayer request for my father who just recently got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Learning life skills is so important! I love the way you nurture and teach!
Hey Mary
The skills they are mastering is phenomenal! Budgeting, making change, people interactions, cooking, etc... Making for awesome adults.
one of the advantages of home schooling -- every day real life application of what they are learning.
Bert and Jessica you both are wonderful parents. I love this day in the life. The kids are so much better off being able to to do homeschool. I think they learn so much more. So we'll grounded.
If everyone lived like this family we would have a happy world. Beautiful family.
Good to see all of you today.....the dinner looked yummy! Good job feeding all of the troops on $38.44??!! Good job!
Thanks for sharing 👍!
We use the cart system too. Love these carts for homeschool. We don’t use ABECA. I chose something different for my child.
Was so excited to see that you use the ABeka curriculum for your kiddos. It is the best. God centered and wonderful teachers. I had the blessing to work at a Christian school for over twenty five years. May God bless you all.
Truly love your vlogs. I look so forward to them. Your kids are so wonderful and I just love how happy you guys always are.❤️❤️
I loved hearing Audrey say she wants to get into government or run for President!!
Yours are getting that positive interaction with Gymnastics
Kudos for the shopping trip! Kudos for the adoption and the love the two of you are teaching your kids about the respect of the prior generation!!!!!!
Great Job Audrey, Evelyn and Garrett for doing the shopping and making supper. It was very impressive and looked better than Olive Garden. You rule!!😊
You are doing a great job with the kids, they are very hard workers.
I cannot believe how grown up your kids are getting! Really enjoyed this video!
We used ABeka Academy for my two girls, who are now grown adults - we even went to Pensacola, FL for their graduation/commencement ceremonies. 🤩
It is not the school's job to teach meal planning or budgeting... that is the job of the parent -- to prepare them for adulthood.
I was homeschooled for a little while and used A Beka also but had to be put in school because of my learning disabilities
My daughter was homeschooled in grades 5 thru 8 with ABeka. Then enrolled into a Christian School for the remainder. I enjoyed that program. She is 35 yrs old now.
I taught Abeka to preschool ages 4, then curriculum was fantastic so easy for the children. Our school started at age 2 up to high school.
You have a wonderful life. Family means everything and you are doing it. God bless you all from Cape Cod Massachusetts ❤️
I get so excited when I see by our notification pop up on my phone! You guys are the best.
That, in my opinion was an economics class field trip coupled with a business classroom that teaches budgets, assets and debits...the kids cooked that meal and served it wonderfully. This basic stuff is hardly touched upon in public classrooms anymore.
