If you spray paint a clear coat on the outside when finished, it will help to keep dust / finger prints / etc from staining the lamp. You should specify to only use very low wattage or LED lamps in the instructions too. (some people don't have the common sense to figure that out on their own) .

This is really nice - I have two questions - Could you use spray paint vs. a marker to color the outside of the box? Also, is fire not a concern? Did this get very hot when you turned it on?
Yes you can use spray paint and the bulb heats up after some time but not the lamp. I don't think there is any risk of fire. You can also use LED bulbs as they do not heat up when turned on.
