thanks for this! Just got access to my uni's flextight after DSLR scanning negatives for 4 years. Can't wait!

Latex gloves are safer than cotton IMO, as cotton tends to leave tiny particles on the film which tend to not go away even when blowing air on the negative

Agreed that cotton gloves can leave particles but latex gloves are powder coated so I wouldn't recommend, powder free nitrile gloves would be better! 😀

If one was to scan for a positive file output and colour convert elsewhere, would the scanning time be faster than the 5 minutes in this video?

The center portion is always sharp, but I found the corners are somewhat soft no matter what I do.

can you edit an image while a new negative is scanning?

Hey there. Does the flextight work with modern computers? Same with the software. Does it need to be run with an older computer or would something from 2020 be okay?

Hi Skyler, ours is currently installed on an iMac 2015 running High Sierra, the Flexcolor software, I believe is available at www.hasselblad.co.uk as a download. It connects via Firewire using an adaptor to the display port. I hope this helps!

It does not work on 64-bit os. So Catalina and newer is useless. Have no idea about windows os.

I had problems in Windows 10, 64bit, but also in Windows XP 32bit.
I managed to run the software on an i5 laptop, but no idea why it doesn't work on my desktop computer, both with Win10 and 64bit. They definitely need to update their software. It also looks primitive and it is not a match for their fantastic scanner.

How would you say a flextight compares to something like a Nikon Coolscan 8000? From my experience with the latter, the whole process of getting it setup (dated software, old connector standard, etc) is similar, and same with the time it takes to scan (it takes me 10 minutes per frame of 6x6).

I’m always curious from an engineering point of view why they’re so painfully slow 😅

I can only suppose it's because the film is scanned in lines and probably most users scan at high resolutions!

Wow this guy is destroying the film holder the way he bends it back while loading the film. At 13:34 you can see all the cracks 😢
The plastic will break very soon where it folds back and acts like a hinge. Even when you treat your holders with care they will show cracks in that area sooner or later.
Its also not a good idea to leave your negatives hanging out of the holder, they can definitely get scratches from the scanners lighttable. I did the same and ruined some of my negatives.
I would suggest, put the holder on the scanners lighttable, cut your film if necessary and put it carefully in your holder. Lift the black plastic layer only as high as needed.
Scanning 3F is the way to go though.
Just compare other software options to invert your scans. Flexcolor works ok but is definitely outdated.
I appreciate sharing a workflow and am tolerant for all the different ways to get to different results but I would not recommend anyone doing this to your or anybody’s expensive equipment.

Great observation! So yes, it will damage the magnetic element, although if you look closely this is cracked on fixed with tape which allowed it to bend back and is simply for demonstration purposes only, this was a video produced over lockdown to support our students learning! It has reminded me that I need to create a new video though, so thanks for the reminder!
