Did combining all our chicken flocks slow down egg production?

- We have been talking about it for some time now and we finally decided to pull the trigger and combine all our chickens into one flock. We debated building one large coop to put them all in and pull it around the farm with the tractor but decided to just use the chickshaws that we already had and save the money. Also, when you have a large coop for all your birds there is a large concentration of manure right under the coop and usually leaves you with bare spot in your pasture. By using our chickshaws it is easy to move them daily within the fencing so we can spread the manure throughout the pasture and we shouldn't end up with any bare spots.
We have also been asked multiple time how many egg laying chickens do we have and we haven’t really been able to give a answer since our chicken math has gone crazy. Today we count them and see how many layers we really have!

Surrounded by tall trees, fields like that are a dream come true for hawks and owls. Sheer numbers do sometimes intimidate hawks, but they learn over time how to pick off the vulnerable ones. Hawks are territorial so it won't be all out carnage, but they do teach their young to hunt.
Stress-related loss of egg production doesn't really manifest itself until the 3rd day after the stress. The eggs that are laid the first 2 days after the stress have already been developing and will come out normal.
I haven't seen your videos from a year ago. I hadn't started watching you at that time. Very informative videos. Enjoyed watching them.
I read somewhere that fermenting their food for a few days will help them digest it and their egg production will double!! Hope to have more updates on our channel, just getting into making UA-cam videos we are definitely beginners! Great video!
I love your operation because you even taking your son along with you and they showing other youth that you could enjoy being or having chickens. 🐔I love the fact that they have their own homes and they have their own 🐔
I love when you guys hatch out chicks! I would use this incubator for quail eggs. I live in the US
Great idea putting them all together and just shifting coops daily. The manure below the coops will attract insects which will attract hens and nourish the ground. You have a great crew too. Best to you all.
Thanks! They are good help. We are excited about having them all together
Your chicken set up looks great! Thanks for sharing, as usual I always learn from you and get ideas on how to make things easier:)
Thanks this has made our life so much easier
You all have such pretty land. That sunrise shot was lovely.
Thank you
That's a great looking set up! I would be excited to bet them all in the same field too! Thanks for sharing, this gave me lots of ideas.
It is a beautiful sight. Love just watching them all do chicken things!😂
Think counting as they come out would be more accurate
Hahahahaha....love the boy saying.....Wommmmaaannn! That was the best.
I really admire the company and teamwork. It's amazing...
Thanks
I love it when the kiddos know how to distinguish the chickens by name 😀 my kids want to start selling eggs here in my town. How much does a dozen of eggs go for in your town? We are in Arizona.
Wow!! Great space for them!! Should be an Amazing experience ..
Love your videos! You guys are a great family❤️
Thank you
Found out yesterday you have to childproof your pig pens like you child proof your house. I had a two week old baby piglet face plant into the hole in a concrete block ..couldn't get out, don't know how long he was in there ..got him out put him in the pool to help him cool off.. that was a close call so if you have baby piglets think outside the box and look for anything that they might get into trouble with
I remember when I was a kid my uncle who is a pig farmer pulling a piglet out of a gate that he got his head stuck in. He acted like it was a normal thing that happened and pulled that little guy out screaming his head off. lol.
Thats a very pretty field. Congratulations!
Very impressive set up. Thanks for sharing it
Your welcome. Appreciate you following along!
Would love to see how you made the bottoms of the feeders
My best friend, Wonderful video dear. I enjoyed watching. Hope to see you soon...
Very beautiful farm setup 😍
Thank you
Cool idea. I will try it on my farm ❤
I love your coop.... Im gonna check to see if you have a blueprint
They are a Justin Rhodes design he has plans on his website
Would automatic deer feeders work, they can be set on a timer, and adjusted to how much feed comes out.seems like a couple of deer feeders help out.
I live in town, so i have no advantages of building a big farm. just try my best to work hard everyday to make alot of money by my way
Thank you for allowing us to see how your production is going this is the first time I ever seen your free range chickens on your land on land. It is a joy to see how the production is coming along.
Thanks Andrew we appreciate you following along
This is inspiring
There is an outfit just outside of Lubbock that pastures a couple thousand hens. They use commercial built movable self contained chicken house trailers. By self contained I mean automatic waterers and feed are on the trailers. They move them around their pastures like you do with the chickshaws. When you drive by their operation, the layers are all out milling about the pastures. I don’t think your idea of a chicken house on a trailer would be a bad one. I’m sure you could find a running gear from an old hay wagon in your area and build a light weight structure on it. It would further cut down on labor and maintenance of multiple chickshaws. I’m going to predict you will grow weary of caps on/caps off on those feeders every day. Looks tedious and time consuming.
Wow that’s a lot of buckets and a whole lot of chickens 😦👏🏻👏🏻
I would have the chickshaws a little further from the fence to keep flyers from getting out as easily ... Otherwise good job ...
Looking good
Tha is man hope you’re doing well
How many chickens per chickshaw? Do you have a video on the construction of these?
You're right. The pigs are really unhappy. 😂
Would a shade cloth over the water pans help?
We are thinking about adding that
Awesome setup!!! Quick question! Is there any issues with hawks in your area? I would love to do this, we have 5 separate coops and want to put them all together to free roam like this but hawks are a real pain in the ass. Appreciate your videos!!
We’ve lost probably 3 chickens to hawks in 4 years. Appreciate you following along
which country is your farm in
Very nice
Thanks! Appreciate you following along!
How did you you make your chicken coops. I’m not trying to build all these fancy chicken coops these other people are building. They act like they are building houses
Video is great where do y’all get your chicks at
Thanks! We get ours at valley farms hatchery
Love this! Great vibes from this farm. Which type of chicken would you say TASTES the BEST (for meat and for eggs)?
Thanks for following along Raquel we appreciate your support. We haven’t raised many birds for dual purpose. We love the Cornish cross for meat and sex links for laying eggs.
We have heard good thing about the Bresse chicken for dual purpose but haven’t raised them yet.
@@KCFarms Thank you so much! I will keep that in mind. 🙏
@@KCFarms American Breese is great, I just don't know how cold hardy they are.
Nice ranging area! I'm not familiar with one of the breeds you named: If you will, please list the breeds again. Looks like you have some good help! Thanks!
Vario-ova, white leghorn, commercial brown (brown sex-link), black sex-link, and amberlink
Thanks for the names. I have "several" breeds. As I wish to hatch eggs of each breed, each pure breed is penned separately, so I can relate to the time/effort needed come chore time!! ha Then I have a pen of mixed hens and as Novagen (sp) is not technically a breed, I keep my Novagen in with the mixed flock. Thanks again!
What are you using to charge the 5 nets?
I don’t have a charge on it. If I do it will be a premier 1 solar charger
How will they go into the correct coop? How do you keep preditors away with having the nesting boxes open like that?
For the first month or so it was pretty cool they would go into the coop that they were used to going into to. Now some of them have switched but there are chickens still in all the coops each night.
Nice life, my friend.
Any dandelion in the grass? My chickens love that.
Great video. I learned some things. What is the dimension of your Chickasaw?
We have a few that are 6x6 and one that is 8x6. We used the Justin Rhodes Chickshaw plans and modified it to fit our needs.
@@KCFarms how do you train them to go back in at night to begin with? How do you time the best time to go out and close the door. Can you use sun set plus a certain number of minutes?
When you first put them in it leave them closed in with food and water for a day. They learn that is home and go up everyday. We go and shut the coop once it is dusk or shortly after
I know nothing about chickens so I’m asking probably a goofy question…does it matter if there’s cross breeding between the different species I guess is the right word? Or do they stick with their own? Just curious and really love watching how you do things!!
It doesn’t matter. If you decided to hatch you would get a mixed breed of chicken. Thanks for following along!!
@@KCFarms oh for Pete’s sake, I watched that too early today…you just sell the eggs, duh🙄 I promise to have 2 cups of coffee in my system before asking questions next time😂 thanks for answering though!!
We do hatch as well
where is the village farm
What type of feed do you feed your flock to help them lay a lot of eggs
We just use a 16% non gmo layer pellet
Do you have a video or link to make those chick shaws? They are a great design!
Justin Rhodes has one that’s where I got the plans
@@KCFarms awesome thanks! Also do you electrify the netting fencing they are in or no?
Nice sharing my friend 👍❤️🤝🤝🤝
Thanks
I call that free range
I thinking to do that , go behind my goats and cows
Greg Judy style if you haven’t heard of him.
He has a UA-cam channel.
Combined or whatever , you think you feed chicken but long term ,chicken raising you 😅..
So your tools set as wholesome natural .
Yes it will. Hopefully just short while
This is a gorgeous setup! Love the simplicity of combining them all together in one large, protected space. A couple of questions…How many feet of fencing is this space and is it electric?
Thank you. We have 6-100ft fences put together. We don’t electrify them.
What tupe of food are you feeding them
Non gmo layer pellet
Chicken lay like that when they wanted to be submitted
Do the chicken return to the group and the same coop every night?
They used to now they have changed lodging but usually they go to the same coop they have picked
Great,but what about Eagles,owls & hawks?
We have lost 3 chickens to hawks in the 5 years we have been here
Where do you sell your eggs? Do you need an egg license? Do you wash them in your kitchen? Or do you have a dedicated facility? Just wondering because I would like to sell my eggs at farmers market and we need an egg dealers license.
We sell by word of mouth and at a market. Rules are different everywhere
Be nice on that water Speak it to have a patio umbrella
I love ❤️ this! Chicken land.
Thanks
Do you worry about chicken hawks?
We do have hawks. We have lost probably 4 chickens to hawks since we have been here
@@KCFarms
Thanks. I plan on expanding my flock and wanted to know the risks. Thanks 😊
🤔❤👍
They need protein. !!!!
