    Thanks Scott. You've helped me make up my mind in favour of the Roland. Even in my sound-isolated music room my sax is too loud so it would be handy for getting the tunes under my fingers with some privacy and then switch to the sax for recording. Also I've got a bunch of synths I'd like to be able to play from it because I'm not a great keyboard player.

    What a difference a day makes I’ve had the AE10 for 7+ months now ,Scott and have nothing but praise For this remarkable musical digital Sax ,it’s so much fun to play and you keep discovering.new tricks you can embellish your playing with ,doesn’t take to long before you are able to pump out tunes as you have demonstrated,a worthwhile addition to every ,Sax players kit ,nice one Roland the AE10 whose time has come .

      Totally agree!! It is so much easier to play than all of the other wind synths on the market. I also like that it has internal speakers so I can sit on my couch and practice while watching tv late at night without having to hook it into anything else. It's a very well thought out instrument!

    You might as well be an endorser for Roland while you’re at it! You had me sold on the P. Mauriat 66r tenor, which I bought, is hands down the best tenor I’ve laid my hands on. And now I just bought one of these. Looking forward to using it as a tool for practice, and for something to expand my creativity. Thanks for all you’re awesome posts and insights!!

    Hi Scott,
    I really enjoy your videos. I purchased a Roland Aerophone-5 Go. I am a frustrated Ewi player.
    I use my Aerophone like a controller. I run it off of Logic Pro. I have had it for three days and I am almost ready to perform publicly with it.
    The Aerophone is easy to play if you’re already a seasoned saxophone player.
    The Aerophone was a great purchase for me.

    Great information, thanks! I have been playing saxophone since 5th grade in 1966. I majored in music in college and also played for 11 years in an Army Band. I got one of those Akai EWI-USB things a couple of years ago and never could play that thing for anything. I get it out every so often and have another go at it, but it sucked! I'm so glad of your comments as it showed that it wasn't me! I'm in the market now for a midi wind controller and after your review this Roland will definitely be on the top of my list. Anybody want to buy my Akai?

    Thanks for the video. I purchased the Aerophone GO,; it more or less comes as a “simplified” version of the AE-10. You have to get most sounds through the app, but to get good sound you have to have a line out anyway. I just put my phone or iPad in between the instrument and the board (or speaker). All run on batteries. I am not a saxophonist (I play the flute) and the GO has a couple non-saxophone fingering choices. I have the Yamaha WX5 and the EWI 5000. The 5000 is great if one wants to play really fast passages, but is not as good for regular play as you pointed out. The GO has the best of the three instruments when comes to key feel and the software, as mentioned, is at least of this century😊.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  5 років тому

      I haven't played the GO, but I assume it is really similar to the AE-10 but just with fewer sounds and controls. But, agreed... it is so much more friendly to play!

    For an instrument that's designed for portability, it baffles me that there isn't a rechargeable battery for it. If you're a pro, and it dies on stage (or you get your low battery warning light), you just pop it out, and pop in a full one. No messing about getting 6 batteries out and 6 batteries in.

    Hi Scott, I play alto sax and would like to say thank you for helping to break down technical information for the sax. (...more than you know..) For example, how chords work like 1,3,5 1,4 chords for your chop shop exercisers. It's hard at times to find a convenient time to play after work without disturbing the neighbours but hey... I watched your tutorial on Roland Aerophore AE1 - what is this like to play with head phones..? Would anyone else be able to hear me playing if I am using the Roland Aerophore in the same room? Thanks for sharing your advice and knowledge. Please keep up the good work.

      Before playing it, I would have said no. After playing it, I would say yes! The fingerings is very similar and I think it will translate. I'm very new to it, but my first impression is that it won't replace practicing an actual sax (especially for sound), but it should help with fingers and technique.

    It is a nice straight ahead review, thanks Scott. Captures the experience of getting a new one! I know it’s not really your intended usage, but did you try it with decent headphones or through alternative amp/speakers? What did you think of that? I have one and think the sound through headphones is terrific... I wonder if it would have sold better without the little on-board speakers since this seems to be what its detractors seem focussed on.

      I haven't plugged it into my PA yet. I might give that a try today! Yeah, I think the onboard speakers are both cheesy and helpful. Cheesy because they just don't sound good, but helpful because I can just pick it up and play it without having to plug it in to anything.

    I come from a piano background years ago and wanted to learn a wind instrument. I tried an Oboe and I nearly popped an artery getting a note out of it. That put me right off. Then I thought I could learn on the AE10, in simple mode, I could learn much faster. I don't want to have to hook it up to computers etc to begin with. That would be very confusing. What do you think? I can rent one of these pretty cheaply to begin with. Maybe if I can compress the learning curve enough to move to a clarinet which would be my end choice. I am 68 and I do not have 10,000 hours available to get reasonable.

    So glad to hear you struggled with the octave on the EWI , I bought mine 4 years ago and for most of that time it has remained in it's box for that very reason. I managed to create some pretty wicked sounds but found that I couldn't use it live as I kept jumping octaves so I'm sticking with my saxes.

    Bonjour Scott !
    Thanks for this video which is very useful for me.
    I first apologise for all grammar faults, but English is not my native language 😅
    I'm considering buying an AE 10 G from Roland, and here's the situation : I'm 38 and I consider to start learning a wind instrument. I had solfege lessons at school from which I keep decent basis on reading music sheets. I also played recorder, still at school, and I remeber wasn't too bad and found it quite easy to play. I also had some sax lessons but I was going and not patient enough to learn seriously. I also have a bad memory because of the weight of this instrument, especially on my lower lip.
    Back in present, I grew up, I know things don't come alone and need sometimes some practice. I live in a flat, I wouldn't like to scare my neighbours or my cats with my exercises. I sometimes have music's in my head, don't know where it comes from, it just comes like that. It sounds more windy than a piano or a guitar. So, I needed to find some wind instrument that can be plugged on a headphone so that people around me can keep living in decent conditions 😄
    I first googled "electronic recorder" (in French) and I quickly found the Roland Aerophone. I understood that this strange machine is based on a sax. It seems to me quite interesing because I understand that it offers more flexibility than a single recorder. So I conclude it represents a great opportunity to learn how to play with sax fingering and also on other wind instrument since it's possible to switch between fingering mode.
    Anyway, here's my question: as a teacher, what do you think about the AE 10 from Roland for a person like me who would like to play firstly for itself ? I don't think I will perform on stage. I may try to record and write down this music's that come out of my head... I consider playing music as a leisure, not as a professional.
    I hope I'm not too confused ^^ Feel free to ask for more information if needed.
    Thanks in advance for your reply 😊

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  5 років тому +1

      I've never met someone who went from wind machine to sax, it's usually the opposite, but I don't see why it wouldn't work out for you. It's easier than learning a sax because you don't have to worry about tone at all. Just fingers and tongue. So yeah, it might be the perfect fit for what you're looking for.

    Hi Scott
    I agree that it doesn't sound all too good with just the internal speakers. I wish you would have plugged it into an external speaker source so we could get a better idea how it could sound.
    My biggest question is would you recommend it to a pure beginner? I am seriously considering learning an instrument and this seems like the perfect fit for me. I was told that you could play it with just the left hand which would be perfect for me since I lost my index finger and half my thumb on my right hand.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  5 років тому

      Hey Terry, this video was an unboxing and first notes video. So I just took it out of the box and started playing it :-). I have plugged it into my PA, and it still has somewhat cheesy sounds, but it works perfectly for what I want to use it for. There are all different kind of configurations for the fingerings, so I'd check further into it before purchasing it for that reason. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a primary instrument, unless that was the sound you were going for.

    how does the blowing work. I had an ewi usb briefly (horrible) and there was barely any air passing through. the pressure from blowing hurt my ears. Does air pass through the Roland aerophone more naturally?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  6 років тому +1

      It feels more naturally than the others, but there is still some resistance. The tonguing for me was more of an issue than the air. I don't try to put nearly as much air through this as I would a sax. Just enough so that it plays.

    I had to look up that key setting, because I didn't remember there being one. It's called KeyDelay, and it's from 0 to 10, default value 5.
    The errata sheet for one of the various versions of the manual says:
    "Unintended notes can be sounded due to inconsistent fngering when you press or release multiple keys simultaneously.
    By specifying the key delay, you can make it less likely that unintended notes will be sounded."

    That's exactly how I was taught on Clrt. So no problem.
    Clarinet has no bis key. NONE! So I never use it on sax. You could cut it off without telling me and I would not notice until I came to sell it!
    Will that hinder my playing the AE10?

    Hey Scott, great video! How do you like it ~6 months later? I just discovered the Aerophone and what it can do. I played bari sax for about 13 or so years but stopped a while back because I moved from house into an apartment and then into a townhouse so I am in a bit close with my neighbors. Plus I don't really have much time having a toddler running around now. I'm sure this is absolutely no substitute for an actual saxophone in terms of response and embouchure , but do you think this would work to practice on? Maybe get back into the swing of things? It's portability and volume control are pretty attractive in my situation. The price is decent, considering that if you are ever able to find one, a proper "mute" for a baritone would be astronomical.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  5 років тому +3

      It's great for what it is! It's not a substitute for playing a sax though. However, if you want to play a sax but can't because of volume constraints, this isn't a bad alternative. However, the tonguing is completely different than a regular sax. The fingerings are the same with the added octaves. I wouldn't use it thinking it was a sax, but if you want to play a keyboard sax, this is your instrument! They also make a cheaper version now with fewer sounds and controls. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the full versions AE10

      Hey Kieren! I'm not sure how easy the switch would be from AE to sax, but the way I did it was pretty seamless. I'm guessing when you pick up the sax, the biggest things will be breath control and tonguing. The fingers are nearly identical and you actually have to play cleaner on the AE10. I did a video on Embouchure... check it out. It will translate to the AE also, you just won't hear any tone differences, but it will help you have everything in the right place when you switch. The tonguing is the exact opposite of a real sax.

    Great video! I'm thinking about getting a Roland Aerophone AE10. I have owned an EWI-USB, 4000s and 5000. I have had no problems at all with the octave rollers on the EWIs, but maybe that's just a subjective opinion. :-)

      I couldn't play the AKAI because of the rollers and the touch sensors. It was disastrous for me. I picked up the AE10 and could play it in a day. I strongly suggest the AE10 especially with the update to 3.0 it has lots of great modern sounds now too.

    Lo primero es pedir disculpas porque escribo en español pero sentía la necesidad de expresarme en mi lengua natal.
    Hace unos 5 meses envié mi instrumento AE-30 a un técnico de Roland para cambiar las gomas por las de 2º generación , lo consulté y me dijeron que si sin problema que me ponían las nuevas , pues bien me devolvieron el Aerophone con una avería que nadie sabe de dónde viene (Notas que se quedan colgadas y otras que no suenan) para que mencionar que la gente que trabaja en Roland España no tienen ni idea de estos instrumentos y ni son músicos ni nada , después de más de 4 meses a la Sra. En cuestión se le ocurrió contactar con un especialista y al parecer tienen la solución pero claro ahora hay que esperar a que vengan los repuestos y quizás otro mes o dos más , les pedí que me dieran una solución ya que 7 meses sin instrumento es demasiado y no tengo otro ya que por problemas de salud tuve que vender los saxos porque no podía tocarlos más , el verano ya empezó y estos Sres. Me han dejado colgado y ni siquiera tienen la delicadeza de facilitarme otro instrumento de cortesía mientras reparan el mío aunque sea de la gama más baja y eso sin contar que nadie sabe y ellos tampoco que la solución al problema sea la que ellos piensan , sinceramente una vergüenza , no se puede dejar a un trabajador sin su herramienta de trabajo en pleno verano y no asumir ninguna consecuencia
    Si vas a un taller mecánico con el coche te dan uno de cortesía y esta gente me deja a mi sin instrumento 7 meses y a saber que pasara, vaya empresa Sres. de Roland que están haciendo ¿? Nunca me había sentido tan poca cosa como estos meses, falta de empatía , falta de profesionalidad ¿?

    Hi Scott, I would like to know what your perceptions of the AE10 are now after 9 months. I have had mine, also, for about 9 months but as a clarinet/sax/euphonium player I would never play these tones on this as they are amongst the poorest of the 128 tones it has. I am incredibly lucky that I live but 9mls from Alistair Parnell and I have had instruction from him re-it's electronic wizardry - he is 'the' guru and an incredibly nice bloke to boot!! I have great fun layering instruments, playing with backing tracks, and using mostly orchestral and/or the oriental tones. If one wants to play sax, clarinet, trumpet - get your proper one out of it's case and just enjoy the AE10 for the fun stuff!

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  5 років тому +1

      I use it as a keyboard for sax. In other words, to create sound that I can't on a sax. I never ever use the sax sounds on the AE-10. First, they aren't very good. Second, I already own a sax that sounds like a sax.. haha. Now, I do like the more modern crazy sounds.... I can't make my sax do that. I've watched tons of Alistair's videos in learning EWI type things.

      Hey Jared, yeah I do! But only if you already have a pretty high level of playing the sax, because it is a bit different (especially the tonguing) which could develop some really bad habits if you're not really locked into your technique. But it is great for playing chord changes, tunes, technique practice etc. You can even plug headphones into it so it is silent. I have it sitting on my desk out all of the time, so if I have something I need to figure out real quick, I can just pick it up and play it. It's a great tool!

    I appreciate your videos that are of excellent quality. My name is Juan Pablo Rivas, I am Chilean, I live in Santiago and have been a music teacher for over 30 years. Currently I want to buy an Aerophone Go or the AE 10. They sell me AE 10, but it has only 50 sounds or a little more, the owner tells me, that I could add more sounds, I think you have to pay to acquire them, but in the tutorials from You Tube, this instrument features 129 sounds. Maybe it would have to be configured as factory state, so that all the sounds can be returned. The person who sells it said: "That it had only those sounds and bought it new" Also this seller said: "That it could generate more sounds by mixing them with what it has, because they can be stored in the empty banks, which this instrument has.
    Is there a software, in which I can download the sounds for free? Or this Aerophone AE 10 comes configured like this. I am concerned because I do not want to be cheated by buying a faulty instrument and it is not cheap.
    And in relation to the Aerophone Go, which has 11 sounds, but other sounds can be added for free and saved in this instrument. Which one suits me best?
    I currently have an EWI 4000s but I don't like the sounds. I'm looking for one that has more real sounds, like sax, violin etc. If I want to have them for this instrument, I must buy them. I don't like it very much either, because of the wheels it has for the octaves.
    Thank you for reading this message, if you could help me please!
    Thank you so much!
