We have had emission regulation's here in Australia since the seventies and we do have safety standards which are star rated ANCAP tested. In New South Wales vehicles over 5 year's old have to undergo an annual inspection. The car building industry no longer exists in Australia. The red Escort is a locally assembled vehicle, they came from the UK in complete knock down kit. The Ford Falcon and Holden Utes were built on the sedans or wagons from the time. The Falcons started life from an American Ford imported in the early sixties. The Ford with the air cleaner hanging out was an Australian Ford Fairlane, it is a stretched Falcon we also had the LTD.

  • @simbob26
    @simbob26 2 роки тому +56

Actually…. I call bullshit on that whole statement. Australia’s emissions regulations, safety requirements and road taxes are far in excess of those on the USA, including back when most of those cars were built. The difference was that Ford, Holden and Chrysler developed muscle cars which were tailored to meet those regulations, and didn’t just throw their hands up and admit defeat. Chrysler’s 6-cylinder Hemi only existed in the Aus/NZ market… Ford’s 6-cylinder Barra engine, that everybody is so crazy about today, also only an Aus/NZ product. When we manufactured vehicles here for the performance market they were great. Too bad that all stopped 5 years ago!

Re the roll bar at that back of the Ute you commented on. The owner looks like he's a tradie ... a tradesman with the trailer at back .... so he would use the 'roll bars' to strap building material onto, not to prevent a roll over. Lots of tradies add that extra bar at the back for that reason.

I ❤️this guy. He flips out at the parked cars in the street and he is forever searching for a Sundowner panel van. GMH (General Motors Holden) had an equivalent panel van called the Sandman. Both companies had fully Australian based design teams. It was a sad day when the factories closed down. Also, we have had catalytic converters on all cars for decades and yes, our population is smaller than the USA but we still have some of the best air quality in the World (when we have bush fires the air quality is bad though). Regarding car ownership, my son’s family of four adults means four cars in the driveway and out on the street.

The little red escort was a British design iirc, and a bullet on wheels.
The roll bar serves a dual purpose for tying down loads. The ute with the bar at the back would have used it to lay ladders/lengths of timber so that they don't scrape against the duco and leave space in the tray for all your tools and gear.
And yes, we had the Fairlane. It was the top end model of the Falcon. I think the Fairmont was in there too.

Ute is short for "utility". Basically a car/truck that can more than just carry people with some kind of tray or tub. Not limited to 2 doors.
Also the roll bars are more "sports bars" and apparently help with the aerodynamics. The bar at the back of the ute is usually in place to carry long items, ie. Ladders.

14:31 - The rear 'roll bar' isn't for protection. It's used for tying down long items in the tray of the ute, such as ladders or planks.

Stupid comments thinking that the rear bar is used for cosmetic use or as a roll bar, and thinking it’s only to be supported by a bloody tonneau cover! Bahahaha!!! Yeah we are dumb Aussies according to their comments. And YES Ford was the parent company to Ford Australia, but most of these cars are Aussie designs. The long shot at 6:53 shows falcons which are essentially 4 door mustangs in size.
The red falcon at 8:50 is a GT with a 5.4 l quad cam vvt v8 with 315kw.
The blue car at 9:43 is a Capri which was ford UKs “mustang”. Started as a 4cyl and grew to a 3.0l v6.
The red car looks like an rs 2000 escort with a 2l 4cyl. Behind is the cortina it replaced.
At 13:32 he says it’s a custom paint job but that was a limited model from the factory called a goss special celebrating John goss winning bathurst.
At 14:03 the rear bar makes the roll bar into “roof racks”.
At 18:25 the little car is a British ford Anglia.
18:51 THAT is a fairlane. In fact ford put this to the US people against the first crown vic. The people loved the fairlane better because of the more euro styling but ford went with the crown vic anyway. These could have been all your taxis and police cars.

Ford in Australia is a real mixed bag. We've always had some American models but Ford established a completely autonomous factory in the UK about 100 years ago so we had many British models that were never sold in the US like the Zephyr, Anglia, Escort, Cortina, Capri.
In the 80's Ford bought 50% of Mazda so they replaced the British models with Mazda variants, made in either Japan or Australia.
And like Holden and Chrysler, Ford designed and built a large sedan in Australia just for the Australian and NZ market. So we had the Australian Falcon from 1960 through to 2016.
But like the US they're hardly selling any cars now, and the only ones left other than Mustangs are made in Korea, Thailand or Europe.

The drop sides on a tray back are a little under a ft high & go the full length of the tray . Both sides & the back have the drop sides & are attached by hinges & sth sides are removable. The sides are for when you need to carry a load that can't or shouldn't be carried on a flat bed tray.

The Utility vehicles were designed in Australia. A farmers wife asked Ford if they could design a car that they could go to church on Sunday and use on the farm to carry animals around the farm on Mondays.

That rear roll bar on the falcon ute, isn't a roll bar. It's used more as a tradesman's rack.

The catch about the Ford F series, is that the F series starts with the F150, and goes up to the F700, or F800 I don't remember exactly which one. But that would be like a box truck/dump truck/ school bus. It is all those trucks, whereas the Silverado and the Ram both are just pickups, nothing bigger. So the sales numbers are not exactly fair. Ford numbered the larger trucks a F series so they could count all those in the sales figures, so they had an advantage.

What is Wasteland Firebird talking about in the opening statement? Australia has had strict laws and regulations governing all those things on an increasingly strict basis since the 70’s!
The biggest misinterpretation that citizens of other developed countries have about Australia is that the whole place operates on a care free “she’ll be right” basis which is an absolute fantasy.
Australians who travel abroad anywhere are always surprised at the lack rules affecting them overseas.

I know right. 🤣 it’s like he couldn’t be bothered reading a little about Australia’s car manufacturing history. There is a reason why politicians like to through around the term nanny state when they think the government is over regulating.

Firstly, I drive a 1998 Ford Fairlane.. Leather interior, V8, Politicians car, Fairlane is the top of the line Falcon.. (still) The ones with nice leather tops were Fairlanes/Fairmonts.
The base Ford Australia sedan is a Falcon (imagine Crown Victoria).. The base GM/Holden Australia sedan is a Commodore (prob Chevrolet Impala)..
9:40 Ford Capri.. Just amazing medium/small car/designed to compete with the Mustang, with either straight 4, V4 or V6 incl turbos and "Tickford" Special editions.
10:10 RS 2000 Style Ford England/Europe car (Homogenized) street version of the RS2000 Rally Car (a BEAST).. the rally car HAS no fenders, full rally pack skirts..And an earlier Ford Cortina behind it..
And Chrysler/Valiant here use the "Roadrunner" on our version of the "Chargers", like Dodge (they are a Dodge subsidiary). Our Chargers are a little bit fatter and wider with bigger tires.
The bar at the back is so you can load long stuff and support it at the back.. very useful actually.. its not protection.. apart from for the roof of the car haha

Those "roll bars" on that black ute aren't roll bars, they're tradie bars. Used putting long objects on it that don't fit in the tray, that way you can fill the tray up and have more things to tie on the bars ontop.

That car with the air cleaner out of the hood mate, was your mum's Ford Fairlane but I guess the Aussie version.. The Two door with the green hood and orange stripes is a take-off of the Bathurst 1000 winner back in the 70s. I have had one Ford in my lifetime, (no Holdens) and that was 302 Ford auto two door, like that Bathurst car but mine was Copper Bronze with a white painted roof. I did like this car except for the little annoying things happening all the time. Brand new, it cost me $3300 driveway and even though I didn't pay for it at the time, it had a radio and retracting seatbelts. Those were not standard in 72.

The Falcon Cobra was a 1979, The USA just went so wrong that year with the Cobra
The car @ 18:50 is a Fairlane 1980's. Australia had Fairlanes up till 2007. My last Fairlane was my last new car in 2002 AU2 Fairlane 4L Tickford Police interceptor, It would do 2000km to a pair of 17x60x415 back wheels, The car looked a bit like the crown vic, but had all the toys. The one I had used alot of parts from the Crown Vic Police incerceptor. The car names my be used by a car in the USA, but it's not the same car in Australia, eg Fairlane was the 2nd high end Ford with the LTD at the top, A LTD was an Limited edition Fairlane with the lot = to the Lincoln

When you say they look like Pontiacs are you thinking of the G8 and 2000s era GTO.
These look Australian since both these were made in a Australia based in Holden Commodore but given a Pontiac nose clip treatment in the Holden factory assembly line then exported to the USA.
Similar story with the later Chevrolet SS and Chevrolet Caprice PPV after 2011 and later.
Australia trying to get export markets but GM US made sure the main benefit was too them once contract conditions were skipped over concerning Australian government subsidies.

I'd say the G.T.H.O's and the G.T's would be the most expensive cars on that whole lot , that's why they park em away from other cars . Common practise down here is to build a HO or any other GT model Falcon out of a standard XR , XT , XW or an XY model falcon , I've seen hundreds of replicas over the years and there absolutely stunning !!!
    MAD MAX RULES BABY .

The Mustang ute was definitely custom built. You see a lot of cars in Australia that have been converted into utes. I've seen versions made from 57 Chev, 64 Chev Impala, 80's Volvo, Mercedes, Subaru Impreza and a four door Nissan Patrol wagon turned into a 4 door ute. I'm sure around the country there are many others.

That rear bar is a tradie bar, for ladders and stuff. It's not a roll bar. And what looks like roll bars are really ladder bars, or spot light bars, or they exist to add coolness. In another of Firebird's vids he shows the Sundowner and the Sandman. I owned a genuine 1970 Holden Torana XU1 in Dolly Yellow. Sold it for $2000. Worth squillions now. 😢 Those were the days.
