Regardless of whether you end up going for Houston or not, you've had a phenomenal 2019. Even if OTQ time gets much more ambitious next time around, maybe the strategy can become hitting that goal (whether you go for Half or Full) with more time available to heal up and strategize. Totally a tough decision, though. May God grant you wisdom on the decision.

I agree with the thoughts of many others. It's the long haul that's most important, your just at the beginning of your marathon journey!! Regardless of what happens with Houston I look forward to seeing you run some very fast times over the next several years. You have done a tremendous amount of variety this year, between surfaces, elevation gain, mountain races, road marathons, cross training, etc. I think your knee will be fine with a little rest and rehab!!
Love the ideas that folks have on here - we are all behind you on this Seth - I agree with many of the folks here - take a bit of time off - use the pool as you have before to keep things going, and all will be good. What a base you have already for this - and Listen to Kim below!!!
REST up, work on single leg stability to activate the neuromusclar patterns, better to rest and heal and be able to chase the dream, than continue hurting and prolonging and not. Been suffering with Jumpers knee recently myself, but finally coming out of it 8 weeks later, been sharing on my channel what I've been doing.
You are remarkably positive person. I would be in full on depression mode if I found myself in the same situation. It's inspiring to hear you speak through adversity so positively (.. but also v sad that your dream could die)
Tough decision but your life requires a healthy strong body, I would rather see you run for years than break yourself over one marathon - new dreams will come. Bless you Seth!
Had a runners knee about 5 weeks ago. Took two weeks off with a lot of icing and heating plus squats. Two weeks later pain was gone, thank God! Still a chance I won't fail at the Phoenix marathon :) Stay strong Seth!
Hello Seth. We all know that you are a gamer giving 100 percent effort each day. Most of the runners I know have dealt with injuries at some point. That being said, listen to your body as there are other races and battles to be fought and conquered if you bypass Houston.
Hey Seth, I've been injured before and its a crushing feeling to miss races for an ordinary jogger like myself. However, coming back healthy, stronger and nailing a target race next season is just awesome!
Seth, I agree with sahacking below, I'm training for a 65km Ultramarathon in the Tarkine Rainforest in March and have just hurt my low back. It is ok when I ride my exercise bike or use the cross-trainer at my gym just around the corner, but I can't run without very intense localized pain. Every therapist appears to be shutdown for Christmas, so I'm just going to try to cross-train through it. I wish you every success in maintaining your fitness during this critical period. I recall reading an article in Runner's World several years ago about an American woman who cross-trained for more than a month in the lead up to the women's Olympic marathon trials, so it can be done, it really is just the mental side that you need to work on. Remember Kipchoge's mantra "no human is limited".
Hey seth, I'm also suffering with runners knee for last 3 weeks 80 days into a streak I tried the kt tape but I think I makes it worse and I was running in Luxembourg last week were I wore tights and even that pressure makes it uncomfortable for me I think no pressure and ice heat works.let it find its happy spot in your stride best of luck john. IRL
Sorry to hear that Seth... I'm dealing with similar issue as I prepare for Houston. Depending on how the pain persists I may have to adjust my expectations. Good luck buddy
A few days rest is not a bad thing. If you can reduce the pain by adding in rest, or "active rest" in the pool, this may be overall advantageous in your training block. It is not as if your training base is not high already. While the current state may not be what you had planned ideally, it does not mean the end of your dreams. It means you adjust your strategy and move forward. Take a few days here, and then re-jig your training plan with a rest scheduled in to protect the knee. The re-evaluate. Stay positive (like you need to be reminded of that). Stay encouraged. Head up buttercup. You do so much everyday to keep the rest of us motivated and encouraged. Running through heat, snow, pain, and fatigue. You also remind us to take care of ourselves. Hope this comment can help lift you up. All is not lost. The extra rest may be a benefit in disguise.
Dear Seth, If I were on your shoes I would really take it slowly, don't put in danger your health long term, don't put at risk these great vlogs, you are are really an inspiration for many of us, regardless if you are going to houston or the olympics or whatever....with all my respect.
Really sorry to hear about the knee Seth. I was supposed to run in the Miami marathon and I was on track to break 3 hours until the top of my left foot started hurting. I had to take the last 10 days off. It started to feel better a couple days ago so I decided to go out for 14 miles yesterday at 8:00 pace. The foot felt a little stiff for the first 3 miles but it loosened up and I was able run with less pain. Afterwards though, my foot was throbbing. I can put pressure on it and walk. I can run on it but I have to be careful on how I land. Like you with Houston, I have a few weeks until Miami. Like you said, if it was just a couple weeks away, you’d probably go for it but you don’t want to risk further injury which is the same situation I’m facing. It’s certainly frustrating when these things happen, especially when you put in the work. On a side note, the video you made a couple weeks ago on hip mobility exercises has really helped. Good luck with the knee. Wishing you well and hope that it gets better soon. I would love to see you run Houston and hopefully with a little luck , rest and rehab, you will.
Seth, I love your enthusiasm and energy, that at times borders on frenetic, which brings me to my point. I am not sure you should be wielding that antler-handled bowie knife.
Seth, I had knee pain few weeks before my half marathon last november. I took 5 days off and came back to run a great half marathon. take a few days off nurse the knee and you will be back stronger!! good luck!
AQUAJOG!!!! Get in the pool! Besides being kind to your knee, you can get a great workout! Strap on the belt and go at it. I do intervals, spinning my legs into a froth. I grew up in Denver and we would ride our bikes along the Highland canal, swing on the rope swing, and tube down the canal in the summer. Wish you the best.
Sending prayers your way Seth! I along with all your subscribers would surely rather have you healthy than trying to force yourself to race through pain - which could be detrimental to the overall lifelong health of your knee. Take care of yourself, then worry about other stuff.
Seth, what saved my knee in my roadcycling days- You sit on a chair and extend your leg(no weights or bands) and You just squeeze your quadricep(uper leg) not thinking about the lower leg.Try it ,it works !
Rest. One week of rest will not hurt your fitness. Sleep is your best friend right now!!! You really could come out of one week’s rest feeling so much fresher mentally and physically!!!
Time to rest brother, followed by easy base running and strength training. I have to go through this about this time every year. The body just needs it. Especially when you've put in as much intensity and volume as you have. I would love to see you getting back to those mountains and trails. Good luck
Don’t be a hero, if you have to bail on Houston, bail on Houston just be done with it. It is what it is. You are not a professional, and even if you were you would have doctors and physiotherapists and people advising you about what to do and how to deal with this. Foam rolling, stretching, icing and taping is not a replacement for common sense and taking a break to prevent the body from becoming injured further. Said with much respect and love take care of yourself dude
Seth James DeMoor We are all here for you, but we want you healthy. Olympic trials or no Olympic trials to us it doesn’t matter. I hope you have a nice weekend
@@SethJamesDeMoor Hello from Greece, Had the same issue not a month ago now at the left knee. What worked for me : Ice every two hours for about 16-20min. No running for two weeks and when I was doing some workouts for the knee I was wearing a kinesiology tape, just for the exercise and then ice immediately. Now I'm back in running. Needs Patience.
Great Vlog Seth, that's a great idea to get some help. Too bad I didn't live in Colorado lol I would be there right away for the pizza party. The best thing for that knee is to rest it, or will not go away. I know you don't want to hear that from everybody. I hope it gets better for you, but the pounding on it is no good.
Hi Seth, I noticed when you put the KT tape on your knee it looked like it was too tight. I was taught to apply the tape only 1/2 tension by my PT ( stretch full length then relax tape to 1/2 tension ) . If the tape is too tight it causes pain. This works for me. Good Luck, we are rooting for you.
I know how it feels when you have an injury and you feel that you can’t chase your dream! Rest up, we are all wishing you a speedy recovery! Go chase some butter!
Seth, I live in Houston and run that race every year. In 2015 I had to rest for the final four weeks leading up to the race. No running whatsoever in that time frame. That was the year I PR’d.
Will be praying for you Seth!! Since you have 4 weeks til the marathon, can you afford to take a few days off and rest it? Love what you are doing with the shoe giveaway!!
Seth, I got a lot of runners knee and went to some PT. The symptom is just like yours. At the beginning it only hurts when run slow but finally u will more pain when run fast. RICE helps but wont heal it. The good news is normally it will heal in 4-5 days. I normally took a day off then next day doing xtrain. I went back to easy run on 3rd day with KT tape and continued running easy for next 2 days then most of time at day 5-6 I’ll run with pain free. Wall squat is the best rehab move. It does help heal :) Hope it helps :)
I just thought of something...can you call your shoe giveaway something like the S.O.S project (Sharing Our Shoes) I was moved by the Germans sharing their shoes with one another in this vlog. How does one give and or receive the shoes? Thanks y'all!
SOS! I like this! You send shoes to me (PO Box is listed in the description of this vlog) and then we do a "Running Shoe Giveaways" in the Shoedio for people in need. The shoes need to have less than 30 miles on them though, so basically brand new shoes.
@@SethJamesDeMoor can I send in womens shoes as well? I've been sitting on a basically new pair that's just not for me and want to give them to someone who will use them!
Heads up Seth! I was wondering why you never take one day off each week. I am absolutely convinced that 1 day off does wonders! As well as 6 days kickin' it does. Greetings from Salzburg/Austria!!!
Seth, I’m in the exact same position... literally happened yesterday. Had to rest today... not sure what tomorrow looks like 😬 gutted. Trying to push up mileage, bit of a stumbling block
Diclofenac! I'm not a doctor, but years of experience with inflammation through gout attacks. Not sure if you will read this, but any pains caused by potentiontal inflammations around the joints: Ibuprofen and Diclofenac, as they both tackle the inflammation itself (they just don't simply stop the painfeeling). Whenever I have an inflammations, Diclofenac works much more effective than Ibuprofen. 75mg for the first night and you should feel improvement. Diclofenac is also used in Voltaren, but the Voltarengels don't seem to go to heart of the inflammation, they are too light as a dose. They opperate as pain relief more like Ibuprofen. Once the inflammation is reduced you can look further, but at least you can continue to train...
Seth, knee problem - I started having serious right knee problems, and read it may be a lack of stretching (elongating) my quadriceps (I sit all day long which results in contracted muscles). So three times a day I did specific stretches to elongated the quadriceps - problem solved! BTW, you need a hand held packing tape dispenser - much faster ;-)
You're a good man. Hope that knee feels better. I'm in the same boat but it's the Army's fault after 19 years so I am just being stubborn and pushing my knees regardless. But there is the Run the Alamo marathon San Antonio in March if you want to push me to run better. Running for a cause: Young womens breast cancer and St. Jude.
the power of shoes and the power of prayer , with a little rest perhaps you will run in Houston, much love and respect and well wishing , maybe some creative resting and buildup in the coming days so you can be there pain free
Seth, typically the treatment of patella femoral pain syndrome is balancing the strength of the quads and hamstrings. If I was in your shoes, I'd go hit the weight room for a couple of days.
Feel for you mate. Suffering from periformis syndrome the last few months and had to make a call to stop training for at least a week to try recover while I'm targeting my first sub 3:20 marathon. Doing cycling cross trainer machines and treadmill walks to at least try maintaining my fitness over the next week or two until I can get back to running. With the cross training the upside is though my legs never felt fresher.
Steven Robinson Ugh! Sorry to hear about your PF. I’ve been there! I’m happy to hear you made the right choice about taking time off. There will always be another marathon. We’re in this running game for the long haul, right!
Hi Steve, piriformis syndrome is no fun. I did all the flossing stretches, then squats and side-leg raises, etc for strength, and warmup routines... but what helped me most was a more pronounced arm swing. This seemed to correct my gait in some way. Who knows...
Hi Seth, knee pain.. ugh. All the rest, quad/ham/etc stretching, and squats sounds like what has helped me earlier this year. But since you've been running hard outside in the CO cold, have u considered the shoe midsole stiffness effect? I've read that certain midsoles materials stiffen a lot more than others in the cold. I believe the ZoomX Pebax stays cushier in the cold, and there is more of it too w the VFs. TPU in the Adidas doesn't stiffen up too bad either. Many articles online, but who knows what's legit. VFs (worn ones) in the cold for me still feels good, whereas the EVA shoes that were ok in the warm, made me hurt the other day.
I would love to see those exercises because I might have a similar situation with my right knee too. btw.... the knee brace does help. but if you wear it too much it could make your knee weak.
Seth, just coming back from a knee injury myself, the cure for me was lifting heavy for two weeks, doing box squats, deadlifts, and Bulgarian squats. Look up Squat University’s UA-cam video on patellar tendinitis.
I’m running the Mumbai Marathon on the same day as Houston. I have pain in my left leg, which the doctors say is because of some nerve injury. So, instead of running 5 days a week as I used to, I have got it down to 3 but then the remaining 2 days I’m working twice as hard in the gym with non-impact cardio (cycling, elliptical). So, it’s working on the overall fitness and endurance with lower impact on the foot...
Resting won’t help. Trust me. I’ve been dealing with knee pain since a 46 mile bike ride I did in Japan in September.. same Patellar tendinitis area, I’ve rested for 2-3 weeks at a time and it feels normal in regular use but the second I run it feels the same as how I left it.. the only time I feel better is thru extreme stretching of the quads and the hips!! I’d rest it for a few days but stretch for a few hours and it should go away!! Praying for you!
HI Seth, ask yourself the question, if you had to rest till the houston marathon day, would you be confident to reach your goal and qualify for the Olympics? If so, than reflect on introducing a different training schedule with less mileage, and focus on strengthening muscle groups.
Seth, I hope your knee is feeling better today. Why not work on some other aspect of your training module. Maybe some breathing exercises or stretches for your back & shoulder (you mentioned the importance of good running posture). I believe in you & I know that you have a really strong base, so a couple of days off will not derail you. All the best my friend !!!
Same/similar knee pain every cycle for me, it always goes away last week of my 3 week taper and doesn’t recur during the race. I have run it up as hi as an 8 or 9 on the pain scale, cut a 22 mile run to 21 because of it last cycle. Maybe do a 4 week taper? Maybe do a 4 week taper and consider the half? Best wishes regardless Seth.
Seth you need a coach someone to bounce your training and racing programme through. Sometimes as an athlete you can't see the bigger picture as you're in the middle of it. The difficulty is finding a coach who you can trust. Two injuries in the space of 10 months should be telling you that you're training/racing programme is not in balance. Good luck with the injury and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thank you Nick. Thank you Seth.
Hey Seth first time writing, love your vlog ! Get well and good vibes to you and your knee. Hope to meet you in Houston. Greetings from Guatemala 🇬🇹
Had a runners knee about 5 weeks ago. Took two weeks off with a lot of icing and heating plus squats. Two weeks later pain was gone, thank God! Still a chance I won't fail at the Phoenix marathon :)
Stay strong Seth!
Michael helping with the 📦! 😍
Hello Seth. We all know that you are a gamer giving 100 percent effort each day. Most of the runners I know have dealt with injuries at some point. That being said, listen to your body as there are other races and battles to be fought and conquered if you bypass Houston.
Wishing you all the best bro 💪
Hey Seth, I've been injured before and its a crushing feeling to miss races for an ordinary jogger like myself. However, coming back healthy, stronger and nailing a target race next season is just awesome!
Bummed to hear about the knee Seth... Hopefully a few days rest will help! Don't give up and keep inspiring us!
Like you said, if it was just a couple weeks away, you’d probably go for it but you don’t want to risk further injury
which is the same situation I’m facing.
All the best captain!
Jason Aberly Agreed! Seth will be setting a great example to all runners by taking time off to let his knee heal!
Seth, what saved my knee in my roadcycling days- You sit on a chair and extend your leg(no weights or bands) and You just squeeze your quadricep(uper leg) not thinking about the lower leg.Try it ,it works !
Great stuff you doing.
Thank you Mark, I appreciate your words and I'm definitely chilling out. Rest day yesterday and the knee does feel better.
Needs Patience.
take a week off from running and switch to cross training in the pool to keep your cardio up
Great Vlog Seth, that's a great idea to get some help.
Rest well champion! You got OTQ 👍. #ButterMyBread
Will be praying for you Seth!! Since you have 4 weeks til the marathon, can you afford to take a few days off and rest it? Love what you are doing with the shoe giveaway!!
Never seen a optimistic charecter like you brother Get well soon 🤗
Seth, I got a lot of runners knee and went to some PT. The symptom is just like yours. At the beginning it only hurts when run slow but finally u will more pain when run fast. RICE helps but wont heal it. The good news is normally it will heal in 4-5 days. I normally took a day off then next day doing xtrain. I went back to easy run on 3rd day with KT tape and continued running easy for next 2 days then most of time at day 5-6 I’ll run with pain free. Wall squat is the best rehab move. It does help heal :) Hope it helps :)
Sorry about your injury. I’m dealing with a knee injury now with my first marathon coming up. Hope you feel better
Sounds like it’s time to rest the knee! You’ll come back stronger, hang in there!
I just thought of something...can you call your shoe giveaway something like the S.O.S project (Sharing Our Shoes)
I was moved by the Germans sharing their shoes with one another in this vlog.
🤞🏻The knee calms down
Heads up Seth! I was wondering why you never take one day off each week. I am absolutely convinced that 1 day off does wonders! As well as 6 days kickin' it does. Greetings from Salzburg/Austria!!!
Go for it man!😊
Seth I hope your knee is better tomorrow! 💪🏻🏃🏻♂️
Jude.
I'm really looking forward to this shoe wrapping pizza party!!!
the power of shoes and the power of prayer , with a little rest perhaps you will run in Houston, much love and respect and well wishing , maybe some creative resting and buildup in the coming days so you can be there pain free
Take your time and getting better soon Happy Holly Days
i'm not local, but if there's pizza. i'm in.
Seth, typically the treatment of patella femoral pain syndrome is balancing the strength of the quads and hamstrings. If I was in your shoes, I'd go hit the weight room for a couple of days.
Zachary Rumlow that’s what my PT has been doing with me... and giving me a beat down with a steel bar...
Such a dramatic transition to roads this year, Seth.
Stamps.com ?
Keep listening to the language of your body, not the ego. Proud of you... head bowed,
Feel for you mate.
Stretch them quads!!!That will help the knee . A lot of times ,runner knee happens because of increasing work load making quads to tight .
Greetings from Philippines 😃
Thanks for watching!
Listen to your body. Don’t get injured for chasing that OTQ.
Yes indeed. Listening
Audio issues in car and shoedio. Perfect in the lounge opening the shoes...
SJD, I love your channel and enjoyed cheering for you along the NYCM course. Question: have you had a doctor look at tour knee, and if not, why not?
You knee d ice ice baby!
Hi Seth, you should get a stamp made with the return address. Would save you having to write them down multiple times!
Or you can print stickers out. Avery labels....
Color combo for the Scott shoes!!!
I would not be confident. Full answer in today's vlog.
Rest for a while and get well soon Seth.
