Ben The Coin Geek
Old Pueblo Coin
That 3 cent piece is awesome, obviously if cleaned it was done very carefully. I hope it shows up on your website Ben, I might buy it!
I got my first trime yesterday. :D Twenty Cent piece is now the last non-gold denomination I still need.
100% crack out to NGC the dmpl morgan, I agree. Only upside
Thanks Ben!
Thanks Ben.
The problem with that TPGs isn't that they've made everyone unable to grade....they've made everyone AFRAID to grade. You may have a coin that looks to you and a bunch of other experienced people as an MS-whatever, but once the TPGs get a hold of it they slap a DEEEEEETAILS grade on it, with very little and usually vague information as to why. It'd be nice if they could provide THE HOBBY information with how to tell if a coin is cleaned, or even something like how much and what kind of decolorization makes a coin "environmental damage". But we don't get that, instead we see books and videos from then on how to tell an MS63 from an MS64. And yes that is valuable information, but some help in determining whether a coin will get ANY MS grade in the first place would be even better. But I can't help thinking that making public the methodology for those determinations might dig into grading company revenue just a bit more than they're willing to sacrifice...
Yes it would be real nice to know exactly why the coin got a details grade, more information would be really nice.
1884 CC - Center of eagles chest on reverse, tilted head out. You'll see possibly the altered service. Eraser ?
The true view image provides a little more detail. It's hard to tell. It almost looks like just some weird toning. But I definitely would crack out and dip to see.
Great content Ben.
No ! Does not crack out the soap box holders that was an awesome coin/holder combo hence the upgrade . Similar to cracking out a rattler.
Soap box holders are awesome in my opinion 😊 great video thanks
I like them too, unfortunately the resale just isn't there for those holders. Since he's running a business I understand why he did that
I think Pcgs is talking about the eagles surface it looks like what you said that someone tried making it look like a deep cameo on both sides to get a dimple on the slab.
really wasnt expecting that grade on the last morgan. bummer
That Morgan that is called AS at the end has been messed with no doubt. The frosting effect on the obverse has been enhanced. Unfortunately NGC will also call it the same. Definitely will not straight grade.
The Peace Dollars were struck during some of the largest Sulphur emissions the country had. The toning they have always reminds me of burning coal.
The country burned coal to make steel and now decades later after American Industry has shut down, plants actually are beginning to show Sulphur deficiency in areas where acid rain used to fall and damage plants and fish.
I've always suspected the dirty look of Peace Dollars is due to this while Air Conditioning became a thing which is why it's not seen on Franklin material.
Just a thought.
I've heard that peace dollars were dipped in a special liquid treatment to prevent toning which is what causes their unique "rusty truck" type of toning. I haven't been able to confirm it, but I think it's an interesting theory. If any peace dollar experts want to weigh in I would appreciate it.
Edit: I did a search for the reason why peace dollars tone weirdly and came across this: " The blanks for Peace dollars underwent a special process called depletion plating or depletion silvering, ("depletion gilding" when done with gold), before they were struck. It's a process that is done with some jewelry, but it's rare for US coins. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depletion_gilding This process involves placing them in a mild acid solution that leaches out the copper from the surface of the 90% alloy of the blanks, leaving behind a thin layer of 999 fine silver. This additional step made very lovely coins where they were newly struck, but caused them to tone in a weird way compared with regular 90% silver coins. Copper is subject to tarnishing and colorful toning much more than.999 fine silver is, and 900 fine silver - which contains 10% copper, is much more vulnerable than 999 fine silver. I don't know if the US did this with any other coins, but I kind of doubt it"
I guess i was partially correct.

It's interesting for certain-
The color on Carson City coins is another thing- I used to live on Hwy 395 a couple hours North of CC in the alkaline high desert and saw my share of alkaline storms. Where winds whip it into a fog and it falls like rain. I have belt buckles that have toning like you'd see on CC coins.
Alkaline is always in the dust and dust is always in the air.
I think next time on traveling on The 395 I may bring some coins to dip into Mono Lake and see what happens.
I like the III.
The eagle throws me off on the 1884 cc
I can't tell what it is but it feels like there's something going on with the surface of the 1884 CC. I guess I get why they called it that but I have no idea what kind of altering has gone on there
Dip the 84CC, since it is in Uncirculated condition.
Dip the 1884 CC!!
the 84-CC...." frosting" in front of the nose....
Ben, were you surprised that the 87 S didn't get a PL on the label?
Its a WIN-WIN WINNER WINNING WON video today...yes Jessica, We have Morgans 🤗
dip that 1884-cc before you resubmit it. get rid of the haze and it looks fine I bet. looks 64 dmpl
Wonder if you could run the fingerprints on that 34 Peace dollar?
Almost thought we were gonna get a Meat Puppets reference but you faked me out.
That 84 CC is nice, how did that not straight grade?
the 84 SEGS Morgan has no eye appeal, IMHO.....maybe why it got slammed
Hey Ben
Hi Ben
🏆
that 3c...cleaned....what ??
Why not CAC? lol
I'm pretty sure that peace dollar doesn't have original surfaces. It didn't come from the mint with all of that black dark toning.
How much will you charge me to submit some Morgan's to PCGS. Lets say 10 to start with first.
I don't want slow-speed with economy...I'd rather do a quicker turnaround submission.
My goodness.... 🐀 🐁 🐭 🐀 EVERYWHERE 😮😁
🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈🐈🐈⬛ You're outnumbered! 😸
