I bought a white '86 Civic Si in 1986 and it was one of the best cars I ever owned! In fact it still lives in my son's garage with a B16A sitting in the engine compartment. He hope to have it finished over the winter and back on the road. Great video that brings back some awesome memories! Thanks! By the way, to bring back that feeling, I recently purchased a 2020 Honda Fit Sport 6MT, and I am having a ball in that too!
Came here to bring up the Honda Fit. It really is the spiritual successor of this car. A lot of their comments about the car could be applied to almost any Japanese import from the 80's but it's true that you don't have a lot of options today if you want light weight and functional transportation. The problem is when you find it, you realize the reason these cars are better left in the past. Road noise and rattles. It's not easy to build a quiet composed light weight car. My sister loved her Honda Fit. My wife chose the Ford Focus over the fit back in 2012 because it was a quieter smoother ride.
I raced an '87 Civic Si in SSCA IT-A in the 90s. Great handling momentum car on the track and easy to shift without the clutch when needed. Fun, lightweight and tossable.
Small world, I raced an 86 Civic SI and an 87 CRX SI in SCCA ITB from 2005 to 2015. By then, they had moved those cars to ITB. I still have the CRX race car.
I owned one in new Zealand, 1985 civic with a 16v 1.5 pgmfi engine. Pod filter, exhaust, 17 inch wheels, subs and amp, was the coolest car i owned back in the early 2000s.
Welcome to my world! These small Japanese cars of the 60s-80s were a riot! Never had a Honda, but grew up driving a '72 corolla with a 1.2L engine, 65hp, rear wheel drive, on 75mm bias ply tires. Super torquey! Super Dorky! One of the most fun vehicles I ever had. You could break out the rear end and drift it through corners, even on pavement. And nobody died! I still dream about that car.
I drooled over Honda's back then in high school and the Civic Si was near the top of the list with my number 1 being the Prelude. Back then, AC was a an option. The first car my mother got with AC was a 1988 Chevy Nova and she paid extra for that
TFL, Thanks for educating the younger generation about a time when driver engagement was considered a virtue not a vice. If you want an even hotter Japanese hatch from this era try out a made-in-California Corolla FX16. 🤩
Civic Si's are hard to find, at least on the east coast. It was the best hot hatch at the time. They were always well regarded and as a result they did demand more money. I had an Omni GLH and before you snicker, I know it is not as refined but it was a minimalist go kart. These Si often got engine swapped with Integra engines. Remember, this was at a time that Honda engines were on the left side so the engine spun differently than most cars. Of course, late the K-swap became popular. But as you guys point out stock, itis a blast. I'm glad to see this reviewed and appreciated. It is one of my favorite cars.
I had a 74 Honda CVCC with the 1200 cc engine, 53 hp. It had sufficient power and got 50 mpg very light weight, great car, reliable. Time before the public thought you needed a race car performance to go across town.
Listen, Hector is going to be running three Honda civics with spoon engines, and on top of that, he just went into Harry’s and bought three turbos with NOS and a motec exhaust. Oh, and double clutch like you should. No granny shifting.
I was commenting on the wagon episode about my mom having this when I was a kid and now you’re driving it! Ours wasn’t the si though, but it’s flooding the memories back
I’ve a 88 CRX HF swapped with a D16ZC sohc. It’s genuinely the most fun car i’ve ever driven. You’re completely connected with the road, as there is essentially no driver assists whatsoever (other than synchros and power brakes, of course). the lack of powersteering is exciting when one wheel hits gravel and it pulls to one side, it’s like the car is playing along with you. And don’t get me started about the intake noise. a completely unmodified exhaust and a cone filter makes that car sound incredible
You’re not old. You’re classic. Like Coke starting in 1985-86. We could’ve driven these in high school. A friend actually had a 70s Beetle (super beetle? memory fading, need more prunes!) and another had a more modern Chrysler Corp K-car (“a nice Reliant automobile” literally). And minivans reigned supreme. I just got out of one for over a decade and the sliding doors and cavernous cargo area … so much nicer than an SUV and easy to get in and out of the driver’s seat vs a truck or SUV. That’s important when a knee develops arthritis. 😮😂 I miss going to after-school bowling club in the back of a friend’s mom’s Cutlass Supreme(another had a Taurus wagon - that was nice too)… and playing Hall & Oates on cassette thru an 8-track adapter Ah, memories.
I owned an ‘84 Civic hatchback in the 80s-90s and still own an ‘86 CRX. Great cars. I love the analog feel. Very well built. To ease the heavy steering feel, just add some more air to the tires. Simple.
These are one of my favorite cars of all time. I drove one of these back in the day and it was fantastic. I was test driving it to buy it, but I was a poor teenager and I couldn't afford it, even if it was used with high-ish mileage. Everyone loves the EF hatch - I had one, so that includes me - but this generation of Civic will always be my favorite.
This was my dream car when I turned 21 years old in June of 1986. I was fairly new in the Marine Corps. A Marine buddy of mine had gotten a brand new 1985 Honda CRX Si, and I fell in love with it, but I needed a back seat and more room than the CRX. I had a beat-up 73 Plymouth Satellite at the time. My Dad told me any dealership would give me at least $1,000 for trade-in. My Dad told me that he would co-sign the loan as long as I got $1,000 for my trade. My heart was set on getting a 1986 Civic Si hatchback in Red. I didn't want any other car. I went to three different Honda dealerships, and every one of them turned me away. No deal on my trade-in. Broke my heart! My Dad told me to forget that Honda, it's not going to happen. To this day, I'm still sick that I never got to have that car. I ended up trading my old Plymouth for a brand new 86 Pontiac Sunbird GT. It was okay, but no Honda.
I had 1 of these in the 90's. Great car and would own another if I found it! My buddy in 86 got 1 of these new when his parents found out he was accepted into MIT & Harvard both, so he had something thrifty to commute with. Thanks Tommy n Kase for the 80's rides - brings back good memories! Most of my rides were from the 60's up. Wonderful memories!
In highschool a decade ago, I had an 86 CRX si. Tons of miles, rust, and terrible owners before me. Loved that car. I drove it for jimmy John’s delivery and I’d drive home on a country road at 112mph most nights. Man that little 1.5 was amazing. I didn’t even know what a timing belt was. Sold it for too cheap, but I also really couldn’t afford to fix it up either.
This reminds me of my dad’s 1986 Prelude back in the day. Most of the same virtues of this car, but even a bit smaller and more sporty. I wish we still had that car!
Apparently, when I was 1, my dad was torn between buying a Civic Si or a Dodge Colt. And he clearly made the wrong choice by going with the (rebadged) Dodge....
Oh man. You guys iys are giving me the feels! I had this exact car, same color and everything, used in 86. I loved everything about this car and drove the beans out of it. It was quick enough to get me into trouble more than once, but it was flawless to own. It blows my mind to think we are in a time now where a car as simple, clean, sporty, and affordable as this just doesn't exist anymore. I wish I'd never sold mine... ❤
Excellent review, Case & Tommy!! TFL now needs to find it’s own cheap 80s-90s Honda for a series (drag race, fuel economy, cost to maintain/upgrade, etc.)
You reminded me of all the fun I had with my brand new Civic Si identical to this one except it had AC (that worked very good) and a pretty good Honda stereo. I remember ripping through the gears, turning the front tires into smoke, attacking the wonderful Colorado mountain roads,... and also driving to work. Thanks for bringing back the memories!
Enjoyed this time travel. I think AC was available as a dealer intalled accessory on CRX and civics during this era. Completely agree seat back angles are best flat like this time than angled forward like a hunchback on todays cars. The crx had much shorter shifter throws. I owned an '84. Its crazy how light these cars were.
I might remember wrong but, I am pretty sure my 86 Civic Si had air conditioning. When I bought it new it was between this & the Toyota Corolla SR5 lift back. I made the right choice but, had to wait maybe 2 months to get it delivered to dealer. As I mentioned before I owned this car for over 15 years, had very little problems with it, with over 200K. Watching this video really makes me sorry I finally gave it to a charity that would then sell it. At least it went to a good cause. The car never felt small or underpowered to me, could hold a lot of stuff with the rear seats down. I took it on several long road trips with an after market cruise control & it was a comfortable cruiser that could get over 40 MPG on the highway & had no problems going up mountain passes. After I saw you were going to do this video I looked for one for sale, very few Si's & some fetch a pretty penny. Best car I have ever owned to date!
The 87 Civic SI was my first new car. I couldn't find one without AC at the time. I was willing to live without it to save some money. Back then, I think most shipped to California with AC.
Didn’t Honda have AC as a dealer installed option? At least at some point in time? I’m sure CA dealers added AC to most and probably only kept one or two on the lot without AC so as to advertise the low price special in the newspaper ads (remember newspapers and car ads?)
This was the best car I owned. Performance, economy and reliability was amazing. Was in Uk, so wasn't Si, will have to look up model. I could take out the sunroof and keep in supplied bag. Kept original apart from R5 turbo wheels and an induction kit. Was late 90s 2000s, so the CRX was the competition. Great car, aged well, Honda reliability.. So want one again. 🙏🙏🙏
that's beautiful civic im honda fan i did have si crx 85 86 but are 2 different ones one goes 140 miles and the other only 120 miles is really difficult to find the ones 140 mph on the cluster i did have the 86 87 civic hatchback the 87 wagon 4wd 88 wagon rt4 4wd and regular wagons 90 crx si and hatchbacks i almost had all civics lol love them simple cars you can do engine swaps old school with new school engines like b searies k series or L series even j series good show guys TFL always coming with good videos
I owned a ‘85 CRX si which was a blast to drive even when you were just going to the grocery store! The only car that was more fun to drive was my ‘89 CRX si which had a whopping 108 hp 1.6 liter engine and fully independent suspension to make it even more responsive when carving up winding roads! I’d love to have one of these pocket rockets today!
The car is fantastic shape! I mean 113,000+ miles and it looks near new! I'm a little jealous though. I wish my '87 Sedan had the fuel injected engine!
The supreme series. I mean come on you guys set that up perfectly. 😂. 4:22 Another kase Classic moment. He really does love the road trips. Awesome series guys. Can’t wait for more.
I never had one exactly like this. But I am very familiar with small Honda hatchbacks. I had the newer 4th gen Civic hatchback. It was my daily driver for a long time
Thanks for the trip down memory lane ;-) I owned a 1985 CRX. A 1987 Civic 1500S (with manual choke!!!) A 1989 Civic Si (original owner and still in my garage awaiting a redo) and I must say, when in 2007 I was looking for another car, I did not like the Civics so I went with an Accent Sport, manual (of course). It was the closest thing I could find to the Hondas. I still have it. And it runs great. (I wouldn't bet on the newer ones though) Simple cars are cheaper to own and a whole lot more fun to drive. I can't wait to restomod the 89' Civic Si. I hope car makers tell the Gubers a big fat FU and start making cars people want. Do you know how many cars Honda would sell right now if they had a $15K simple Civic???? LMAO Stay Safe. Cheers
Honda's crank windows in those days. It's such a good ratio. It was like 3 cranks and that big window was all the way down. You get in a Ford or a Chevy of that era and it's like you're cranking for 5 minutes.
For purely nostalgic reasons - it would be cool if you guys can find a first gen Dodge Aries wagon with the 4spd. My love for cars was kindled while riding in an ‘82 model - primer gray with powder blue cloth interior (complete with navy piping) and a 4 speed tranny with the rectangular rubber boot around the shifter. Everybody saw them as junk cars but it was what my parents could afford at the time (bought it in ‘86) and we kept it till 1997. It was a great car that served us well ❤
First new car my Air Force paychecks paid for was a 1984 Civic DX hatch 5M. Had some issues with it caused by the dealer when I had them add factory air conditioning, traded it for an 85 Civic LX sedan with the 3A. That car was a real dog and I had to add an aftermarket cruise control to it that never worked well. Got sick of Hondas at that point, traded that car for a 1986 Chevy Nova LX 5M (rebadged Toyota Corolla). That was a great car, kept it several years. Turned me into a Toyota fan for decades (until recently).
Had same one back in the day ! no a/c and it was black! lol.. had a pop up sunroof but a ton of fun to drive. wow memories brought back! Hey T let chase drive sometime!
4:13 "we have an AM radio". Actually, an AM-FM radio with cassette, but that's ok, I totally agree with the assessment on this vehicle having owned the next gen civic Si from 1991 which was a bit better all around, but had very similar traits
I love that car! I wish we could go back in time to when automobile industry had so many awesome cars like that unlike the overly electronic throw away crap we have now.
Another Great Video Boys! 🥰 Cars of this era were the best! Where I live there is now a blanket 20 mph speed limit 😢 That beautiful Civic is not emission compliant and would cost you $16:15 per day to drive...Which adds up real quick! 😢 It's like living in a bad dream, as I have 3 mint hot hatches made between 1988 and 1992 😭
Such a great car. Those tires are definitely letting it down, unfortunately good 14” tires are hard to come by, unless you go full summer performance tire. It’s a constant struggle to find good ones for my ‘89 si.
I remember as a young one the parents went to Honda but ended up getting a CRX instead of this. The CRX eventually was traded for an Integra hatch. Had they bought this instead it might have been around longer than the CRX.
Love this car! And live these retro car vids. Newer cars a full of solutions without problems. This was the golden era - reliable, comfortable but without all the doodads of modern cars that can all break easily b
With its p/w ratio can be as fast as 4000lbs/220hp 4 speed auto sedan. To get sth similar u had to go to the vw rabbit gti with 110hp and 1s faster acceleration but way more expensive.
The vented rear windows were cool but I remember sitting at a red light during a powerful windstorm. The next second I heard an explosion and watched my driver side window fly past me in a million pieces. If you had one you had to make sure the windows were properly latched. Whoops.
One reason why you don't see them on the road anymore, is that parts for these cars are hard to get. Unfortunately Honda does not support their classic cars with parts.
If only Mitsubishi would have made a real Mirage Ralliart version with a better motor, transmission, and suspension, we could have had a newer version of this car. That was the closest we had to cars like this.
Doesn't need a lot either because new cars are giant whales.....this is old Civic is far more advanced than anything now. Better mpg, easy to repair, reliable, and lightweight
@@matthewprather7386 Who cares I don't buy cars to crash them you can get an 80's Volvo also if that is the issue I ride motorcycles too.....I work crashes they are not that bad either as you are saying lol
I have a theory: Cars get safer, people get less careful. If cars still had a reputation for killing people, I think most people would stop being stupid thinking they can do 15-25mph over the speed limit everywhere they go. Just a theory.
@ I don’t think the data backs it up. And then consider the innocent bystanders and passengers that get killed or maimed because somebody is being dumb - think children.
@@matthewprather7386there was unfortunately a fatal collision earlier this week in Van Nuys,CA when a street racing Mercedes GT63 ran into a '90s Civic Wagon. The driver's compartment in the Civic was just wrecked leaving one dead and one critically injured. The suspect in the Mercedes made it to a hospital and is OK.
So thankful I had my youth in the late 70s, through the 80s and into the early 90s. Great and fun cars. I had a 1972 Volvo 142, a 1984 Volvo 240 wagon. ...and a small Opel Kadett of the 70s. Fun cars, loved the Volvos though. Miss that.
Honestly Honda needs to get back to cheap small hatches to get people into cars again. They could sell them in the 20s and sell like crazy with the Honda reliability. Cars today are just too darn expensive and many people just want an A to B car and could care less about anything fancy.
I wonder if the ladies would have given this car two thumbs up if Tommy had put it on his chick magnet car list? Maybe if Case had added it to his list. 😂😂😂
I think this version has aged beautifully, such a nice design! Would love more classic road trip videos with Tommy and Kase!

With the background music, I was warped back to a '80's school dance 😅. Class of '89, thanks.
I love that Honda had a 6-digit odometer when most domestics still had 5-digit odometers.
AND they actually need one, whereas domestics don't
I love simple cars. More of these please!

that's beautiful civic im honda fan i did have si crx 85 86 but are 2 different ones one goes 140 miles and the other only 120 miles is really difficult to find the ones 140 mph on the cluster i did have the 86 87 civic hatchback the 87 wagon 4wd 88 wagon rt4 4wd and regular wagons 90 crx si and hatchbacks i almost had all civics lol love them simple cars you can do engine swaps old school with new school engines like b searies k series or L series even j series good show guys TFL always coming with good videos
I had the 1985 Honda Civic 1500S which had 70 hp and it did just fine with A/C.
beautiful car and timeless design
i remember reading ads for these cars in every car magazine in the mid 80s
I owned a ‘85 CRX si which was a blast to drive even when you were just going to the grocery store! The only car that was more fun to drive was my ‘89 CRX si which had a whopping 108 hp 1.6 liter engine and fully independent suspension to make it even more responsive when carving up winding roads! I’d love to have one of these pocket rockets today!
The car is fantastic shape! I mean 113,000+ miles and it looks near new! I'm a little jealous though. I wish my '87 Sedan had the fuel injected engine!
Used to turn the a/c off when pulling out, passing & even sometimes on big hills & we liked it....
I had an ‘89 Honda civic hatchback dx. You could fit a ton of crap in it. Loved that car
It was my daily driver for a long time
Love a good ef civic, i had one with a built zc swap and man was that a fun little go cart of a car. Honestly wish i still had it
like the 2nd gen civics no one thought about saving them ..... same with the crx, prelude si even the del sol
Thanks for the trip down memory lane ;-)
I owned a 1985 CRX. Cheers
I remember riding in a light blue dx one of these in high school. A girl drove by while I was waiting at the bus stop and gave me a ride home in it.
These are the real dream cars ❤
id drive one in a heartbeat. so rad.
I love that car! I wish we could go back in time to when automobile industry had so many awesome cars like that unlike the overly electronic throw away crap we have now.
I love my Civic!
Oh man, that is epically good. I'd love to own one. Fantastic.
Really cool love the throwback series
Love this car awesome video you have to do CRX Si or Del sol. If it's possible love the channel
Right On 😊
I'd happily buy one today.
Another Great Video Boys! 🥰
Cars of this era were the best! Where I live there is now a blanket 20 mph speed limit 😢
That beautiful Civic is not emission compliant and would cost you $16:15 per day to drive...Which adds up real quick! 😢
It's like living in a bad dream, as I have 3 mint hot hatches made between 1988 and 1992 😭
It's an awesome car! Review the rare yellow CR-5 AWD next!
Such a great car. Those tires are definitely letting it down, unfortunately good 14” tires are hard to come by, unless you go full summer performance tire. It’s a constant struggle to find good ones for my ‘89 si.
If you can, drive the 80's ish CRX Si,
I remember as a young one the parents went to Honda but ended up getting a CRX instead of this.
That car is in great shape!
With its p/w ratio can be as fast as 4000lbs/220hp 4 speed auto sedan. To get sth similar u had to go to the vw rabbit gti with 110hp and 1s faster acceleration but way more expensive.
Uhhhhh! My favorite Honda of all time!
I will have one, one day!
A buddy of mine had 9ne of these in highschool
The vented rear windows were cool but I remember sitting at a red light during a powerful windstorm. The next second I heard an explosion and watched my driver side window fly past me in a million pieces. If you had one you had to make sure the windows were properly latched. Whoops.
was the CRX for those with kids.
Cool little car! Is it Kase or Case? Well, in any case, did he get to drive it?
One reason why you don't see them on the road anymore, is that parts for these cars are hard to get. Unfortunately Honda does not support their classic cars with parts.
If only Mitsubishi would have made a real Mirage Ralliart version with a better motor, transmission, and suspension, we could have had a newer version of this car. That was the closest we had to cars like this.
Doesn't need a lot either because new cars are giant whales.....this is old Civic is far more advanced than anything now. Better mpg, easy to repair, reliable, and lightweight
These are death traps though.. I have seen a number of these cut in half by surprisingly light wrecks. Occupants didn’t survive.
Civic Si, the Takis Fuego of cars.
For 10k, you could get a 3rd gen mini cooper that is in excellent condition though.
I still drive all my 88-91 civics.....crxs
Is the Si for sale? It’s in mint condition.
I'd love to have one but I'd drop a better engine in lol but wouldn't touch the interior or body.
Engine sound in normal cars has really gone down hill huh.
One of the biggest problems with cars from the 80's is that the plastics haven't aged well, especially in hotter climates.
I know.
Ha ha you guys drove by my mechanic!
You need to find a 80s Civic Si in this condition, and add it to your long-term fleet.
Thanks for the knock off Beverly Hills Cop music haha
So thankful I had my youth in the late 70s, through the 80s and into the early 90s. Great and fun cars. I had a 1972 Volvo 142, a 1984 Volvo 240 wagon. ...and a small Opel Kadett of the 70s. Fun cars, loved the Volvos though. Miss that.
10.1 is only 0.1 faster than a gen 2 Prius with 110hp but it weights 3k lbs.
I enjoy seeing this, I think they’re cool in their own right. Still wouldn’t pay much for one though 🤷♂️
Honestly Honda needs to get back to cheap small hatches to get people into cars again. They could sell them in the 20s and sell like crazy with the Honda reliability. Cars today are just too darn expensive and many people just want an A to B car and could care less about anything fancy.
I had a 87 CRX Si. It was my thin wallet Ferrari.
I wonder if the ladies would have given this car two thumbs up if Tommy had put it on his chick magnet car list? Maybe if Case had added it to his list. 😂😂😂
