Kate seems genuinely concerned about people confusing her real life character with the characters that she plays, especially Shane. Not just in this interview, you can figure it out from her other interviews as well.

Paulina Pociecha Hi Paulina. This may not be your type of humor (that's okay), but I do want you to know that this interview was staged. Kate was in on it. Kate even went on to do a couple more interviews with Liz (they consider themselves friends) including a very recent interview a month ago.
That's fine I'm happy okay with that so yeah it's just a nuisance make me know

In Kate's earlier part of her career she stated that she was straight. As the show progressed, she began to state 'no comment'. Later moving into accidental outings in interviews. This is because Kate is the kind of person who wants her private life to remain private and feels her sexuality should have nothing to do with the kinds of roles she will receive.
To answer your question, it was an interview with Jennifer Beals for The Advocate magazine in January 2006.
