  • When San Francisco artist and builder Jay Nelson sees someone tearing down a redwood fence in his neighborhood he asks if he can take it home with him.
With a stockpile of salvaged, old-growth redwood fencing, he recently built a tiny studio for his friend Lana to use as a home office. It's just under 100 square feet and that means it's small enough so that San Francisco doesn't require a permit.
In this video, Nelson shows us his stockpile of wood, the studio made of nearly all salvaged materials (doors, windows, flooring included), and how it nearly melts into the yard because of its rounded shape. He also gives us a peek at the greenhouse he's building out of some of his recycled redwood just next to the studio.

What a lovely little space he's created! It's awesome that the old-growth wood is put to good use, instead of being wasted. Kudos to Jay and other builder/scavengers like him.

Jay, I for one, enjoyed looking at your projects. Listening to you talk about it, one quickly learns that you are very passionate about reclaimed building materials. Thanks for sharing with us, and disregard all the ass hole comments from others. Peace brother.

You can't get old growth redwood anymore. Termites HATE it. My house in SF was 100% old growth redwood and it was great!

0:46, I'm telling you "the like" is, like, contagious. That makes me nervous when ever I'm around someone who does that.

Back in high school a 2 or 3 years ago my teacher always got old wood to build sheds out of and then we sold them. Though he didn't get the wood for free.

I grew up in CA, and I used 'like' way too much, too :) It took many years to get out of the habit, plus public speaking with slap the 'like' right out of you! He's a great guy, so he can like his like as much as he likes. He's handy and creative, I like it!!

Amazing how some people can look at what I would call junk and make something functional and beautiful.
