    This man completely exhibits how powerful the flute can be. This instrument isn't and has never been just a little fluff pretty thing to listen to. The flute can exude POWER as well as lilting beauty.

    I so want to get another flute and start playing again. Long tones, scales, etudes, excerpts, pieces. Then at my age I hear this brilliant man and think to myself, "why even bother?" At my age I should be happily accomplished. I just want to fill my soul again with music. 😢

    I absolutely LOVE how his sound just sings out. It's so vibrato and alive. In all registers. Those octave leaps are incredible. Not easy. Especially in rapid passages.

    This man is absolutely AMAZING. I love his tone and how he makes every note speak. Especially with wide intervals. Not the easiest thing to do. His power and intensity are everything. He truly captures everything this work needs for a phenomenal performance. That cadenza, DAMN!! BRILLIANT!!!

    Francis it seems to me the answer is that no flute was played to this ability before. In this case we have the best instrument modern flute played with skill unmatched by past players, synergistically making possible this new standard of what can be done with a flute.

    I was listening to Barber's Violin Concerto just before this and wondering why couldn't he have written a flute concerto or two. Listening to this, I wonder why more composers didn't bother to. Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Brahms, Rachmaninov would have enriched the flute repertoire so much with their sound; granted the instrument has limitations but this performance here proves that it is capable of so much. Sadly this will remain a feature piece, won't get a place in concert seasons. I blame Mozart!

    • @city4497
      @city4497 6 років тому +9

      I know this is 4 years late but the main reason is because the flute at the time could not handle such demanding repertoire. It was only after the Boehm model that the flute began to shape into what it is today.

      @dominicktravis6119 3 роки тому +1

      @@alhdgysz not every musician should strive to have the same tone as another. The most successful soloists are 100% unique from one another. Emmanuel Pahud is more soft while Denis is harsh. I personally am more harsh with the intense parts of the music and soft with the light parts of the music.

    • @alhdgysz
      @alhdgysz 3 роки тому +1

      @@dominicktravis6119 you are right, we shouldn't play exactly the same way. However if we pass on the Pahud tone production, we will have wider colour palette, and wider dynamic range. It is still the artist's job to interpret the music and make artistic choices.

    Marvellous flute playing but as a flute player what is up with the embouchure? Like I love the video but it's an interesting way that I've never seen before - however if that's what works then that's great, he's a lot better than people with "correct" embouchures
