@@alhdgysz There's no need to compare them. Denis is another taste of flute playing and I like him a lot. By the way, Denis and Emmanuel get along together, they're really good friends. They do masterclasses together in Canada every single year. In my view, Denis is technically better than Pahud, especially on acceleration, however Emmanuel's interpretation is another level. I adore Pahud's inspiration.

@@ummitkoc I have quite the same comments like you, really appreciate his low powerful octave, seems he has very super hard rock inside going through all the octaves. and about Pahud, his performance is not so direct like Denis, sometimes you feel it's easy by his performance, cuz he hides all the difficult parts inside. anyway both are my on my list, also the principal flute player Walter Auer, his sound is really so pure like elf king .

      Let's take a fairly easy piece. ua-cam.com/video/HsUB38k_nmU/v-deo.html
The tempo is easy, the key is friendly. So it is not a hard piece. Until you get into the different colours. You can see how much can he do with his flute. And nobody can match this.

Let me be clear, especially to all you people comparing Bouriakov to whomever: Denis Bouriakov is in a category all by himself, and so you cant compare. He blows away any other flutist alive or dead. Technique, articulation, tone, projection, it's not even a conversation. If you cant' hear it, then your understanding of the flute is very little. There are other decent players, but they can't play half as good. A musician like Bouriakov comes around once every 200 years, or more. This man has a freakishly unique technique for blowing loud in the low register and tonguing it hard. He does it louder, faster, better. And don't say that 'loud doesnt mean good'. Im not speaking of playing loud makes you better. I'm saying its an ability that he has and can do it when the music dictates it. 'Faster' - same thing. He can rip through the most difficult passages with ease. Tonguing'- I've never heard anybody tongue faster. Now, after stating all that, his tone is like nothing I've heard before. I keep thinking its his magic head-joint/ flute combo, but we all know its not that. If it was, then everybody could match him. Let me say this; I once attended a master class he did in Los Angeles at Colburn. I was alone, like a loser, sitting up high in the small room, he was on stage. He didnt play at all for the first 2 girls that played, he just talked. But then he picked up his flute to demonstrate something. And I literally could not take it. I had to get up and leave. I walked out (James Walker looked at me shocked) across the street to the underground parking at Disney Hall, and drove home. His tone was too much to bear,, it was too beautiful. It was actually shocking. I was so moved, I was beyond crying. Dazed and confused, I drove out the driveway in the underground street and got so lost, I didnt know where the hell I was or where the freeway was. I could have been killed had my car broke down. His tone was so loud and full, that I knew then I could never ever play that well. Not only loud, but the quality of his tone is unique. In flute playing, tone comes first, then everything else. If your tone sucks, then your dead to me. I saw Rampal play 3 times when I was around 10 to 13 years old. His tone was beautiful, sweet and special. Ive seen Galway, hes loud and great. I never really heard a flute till I heard Bouriakov in person.

My flute teacher played with him before, and she told me that when he smiled he tended to smile to one side, so it follows that his natural embouchure would also be off center. Mine is also a little off center. It's not a special technique you would train on purpose as far as I know.
