This song was published three times: A "Wikipedia"-version, THIS version (without Wiki quotes) AND a new 4:3 HQ-version in August of 2009. Select the one you prefer. "Who's Next" (here in the full second version with intro) is unfortunately still a hot topic today. Iran will maybe have the bomb ready before South Africa? This is the republished version of August 2008 without the Wikipedia quote and with Tom Lehrer's original spoken intro.
Lehrer said "OK" to "The Tom Lehrer wisdom channel" on UA-cam, as long as the performance is not altered and as long as it's free in the UA-cam flash video format.

"I aim for the stars but i keep hitting London"
- Wernher von Braun
damn that's hilarious!
@@Calyrekt It's Lehrer's joke in in song "Wernher Von Braun"
I think that was Mort Stahl mocking Von Braun
@@iamnotanumber3578 I don’t remember that part.
But Werner von Braun got Americans to the moon!
"One for the black and one for the white"
Best line ever.
I thought he was gonna say jew, was that on purpose?
@@raspberrycrowns9494 i don’t get why South Africa at the time was in apartheid so the joke was that they would even split the nukes too, i don’t really know anything about jews in south africa but since the colonies there were french it’s unlikely
@@humblehive6502 ah
@@raspberrycrowns9494 South Africa is not French, it has mostly Dutch and English influence, aside from native Africans of course. And the line was due to extreme segregation at the time in South Africa.
@@humblehive6502 I'm south african and I live in a majority black neighborhood, 500 meters from my house is a four lane road(lined with trees, flowers etc). On the other side of said road is a majority white neighborhood. White people and black people tend to keep to themselves, for example, I've only ever had two white friends in my life, one in preschool and the other an Estonian exchange student(I went to a private school).
tom lehrer calling out apartheid in the sixties, truly a man ahead of his time
That quite shocked me. I didn't expect that. Tom was a genius.
@@johanbrand8601 Was? He still is, as far as i know. He's been out of the spotlight for a while but hes still alive as of 10th of April 2024. Strange to think that someone who performed in the early 50s is still living.
@@jackgrant9301birthday was the ninth
@@jackgrant9301 I would love to meet them man,hes sort of an inspiration of mine.
honestly not really out of the ordinary,
apartheid african states were pretty much pushed into a corner from the start, some tried to compromise and slowly tried moving towards more equallity but generally that just lead to more anger (rhodesia and south africa) others tried brutal repression (portuguese colonies) the brittish and french were smarter in that they maintained nominal equallity but in truth the wealthy ruled, companies often having an african public head and in private being lead by white (brittish) families (in south africa the brittish white elite seems quite happy to throw the boer population under the bus)
but one can also say that the cold war was a major factor in social improvements, have to look better than the commies offcourse, so labour laws were introduced, contracts got better and equallity in general was propagated in every way possible
funny thing is that since the end of the cold war it has actually gotten worse in that regard, contracts are far less protective but on the other hand pensions are now being paid out and the young have to pay, meanwhile housing is mostly owned by investor groups and wealthy people and companies meaning the prices are jacked up
yeah i digressed way to much here
To quote a famous author, "History never repeats itself. At best, it sometimes rhymes."
what author was that?
@@GrimblyGoo mark twain wrote the quote
@@awesome9045 Maybe. God damn plagiarist alien.
The thing that kills me worse than nuclear proliferation is the fact that this song isn't a minute longer.
Hahahahaha
great showmen always remember to leave 'em wanting more
Well if someone does a cover they'll have more material to work with now.
Yeah - I've no doubt that he could have written reams more.
But conciseness is one of his traits - say what you need to say, say it efficiently, on to the next number !
I don’t think you’d want that list to be any longer
Tom Lehrer played great piano and wrote satirical songs that were Broadway quality, as well as delivering bitingly funny monologues between the songs during his performances. And all of this from a man who was basically doing it as a hobby!
So basically bo burnham
@@TitusXexYes. 20th century Bo Burnham
In case you dont know it, i recommend "an evening wasted with tom lehrer". I love his studio stuff, but nothing beats his live concerts.
tom lehrer was born in 1928. i wonder what its like having been an adult when the nukes were made and still being around now to see how tense things are getting, AGAIN
I'm surprised he's still alive, impressive.
Tom was a mathematician at Los Alamos. He MADE the nukes.
Pretty sure things were way worse during the cold war
@@gehhko8249 yeah, but we're catching up for sure
@@jackrambit9637 1. He was drafted 2. He recently revealed (2020) that he did not work for Los Alamos but the early NSA, which was so secret that he pretended to be secretly working on nukes instead.
What is sad about this otherwise hilarious song is how, fifty something years later, this song is still just as (or even more) relevant and true.
Несомненно.
Congratulations on Your 94th birthday today, Mr. Lehrer! You were and are always a legend! May Your timeless and genius music and lyrics live on forever!

He’s now 95 still going strong

Now his 96th birthday just passed.
Tom Lehrer is a national treasure!
As an Indonesian, I learned today that in the sixties our government is planning to get the bomb too. They never told us that.
That's pretty interresting. Seeing how South Africa and Israel also got the bomb (although SA had theirs dismantled after the apartheid), Tom Lehrer wasn't very much off in his predictions!
+cecasander China, India, USA, Russia, UK, France, Israel, Pakistan, (Maybe Northern Corea), and also alot of european ally states of the USA have Nukes stationated in their countries. So the world is very dangerous at the moment.
Israel hasn't used it, but if anyone attacks her, she'll use it too!
+099Nitro North Korea has the bomb (not very good ones, but deadly nonetheless)
LOL
Well, if Soekarno was still live...but we're still a dumbass, even PLTA (Water Electric Plant) can't even work straight...
The great Tom Lehrer, the greatest political songsmith of all time, was a mathematician by profession. His music was largely an avocation. One of the astonishing things about his songs is that though they contain references to events in the era in which they were written, they never go out of style because they are still relevant today. For example, Iran has been in the news, but now we're hearing Saudi Arabia either is going to get nuclear weapons or already has them. Who's next? Indeed.
Well, Kim now officially has them too.
DPRK has had them since at least 2006.
Sealand and Monaco will get nukes any day now. Nobody is monitoring them so it will be easy, always the quiet ones.
Just popping in to say you are using the past tense an awful lot for a man who is still alive.
@@Peta4241 I know that Tom is still, thankfully, still with us. That's why I don't say the "late, great . . ." Also, when I say he "was a mathematician by profession," I used the past tense based on my understanding that he's no longer teaching professionally, either at Harvard or at Santa Cruz. But if you have information indicating otherwise, please let us know. Thanks.
Born in 1956 I grew up to these songs as my mom had the albums. Was so happy to find these treasures on UA-cam 💝
Indonesia, Egypt, Luxembourg and Monaco were the only countries Prof. Lehrer mentioned in that song who DIDN'T get nuclear weapons (the state of Alabama probably DID have Nuclear Falcon air-to-air missiles for a few years as part of its contribution to the air defense of the United States of America. I had it on good authority Louisiana had Nuclear Falcons at Callender Naval Air Station for exactly that reason.)
***** True, and True. So many bits and pieces of AQ Khan's nuclear weapon technology superstore are unaccounted for after the Bush-Musharraf whitewash of Pakistan's own involvement in spread of nuclear weapons technology that just the centrifuge factory (part-owned by a son-in-law of Malaysia's president) which magically disappeared before Western intelligence could examine it could be quietly making enrichment centrifuges off on an island in Indonesia or Malaysia, producing bomb-grade uranium for use on a city near you.
I mean most of the Midwest had nukes since that's where most where kept. And Indonesia and Egypt did want to get nukes.
So what you're saying is, Luxembourg needs to work on its nuclear program?
But are we sure Monaco doesn’t have them?
This video is 2:35 long... Uranium-235 is used in nuclear bombs. (UA-cam always adds an extra second to the time, but that's just end screen stuff without any footage)
whoever uploaded this is a genius!
Of course youtube had to go ahead and ruin it
or.. yk the more likely explanation... it's just pure coincidence.
Technicly, U235 gets transformed to U236 when catching a neutron which breaks in two immidiatly. So the time fits.
My parents watched That Was The Week That Was, so I heard Lehrer’s songs since the 1960s. Listen to how he changes the music - harmonic minor for Egypt, then a hora dance for “you know who.” Genius on every level.

Given he's now 96 I feel like his retirement is probably permanent
It's incredible how Tom's work is still funny and somewhat relevant after so many decades.
It's good to hear his intro before the song.
Thanks for reuploading this.
Почему я так долго ничего о нем не знал? Он же просто гениальный юморист.
Tom Lehrer, Weird Al, Bo Burnham. Every generation has one.

Both Rucka Rucka Ali and now Kyle Gordon for Gen Z/Alpha. :)
My husband and i fell in love over Tom Lehrer records and we've been married for almost 40 years. The first time i heard Tom Lehrer was when we got our hands on That Was The Year That Was, - in the 1960s - his third record, i believe. All his records are terrific.
This guy is still perfect, decades later. My god.
Of all Tom's songs Ive heard (and memorized) over the years this is the first for me.
The other day I was thinking about this song and here I am. Loved him 60 years ago and still do. Thanks for posting
I was so young (grade school) when I learned and loved this song (and many other Tom Lehrer songs). Still remember every word.
The man is so un PC and yet so freaking awesome! Every time he sings I can do nothing but smile. Been that way for about 55 years we cracked the album and would just start it after the broken piece!
I grew up with Tom Lehrer's songs. Little did I suspect how much would still be pertinent today.
North Korea got the bomb, shed a tear-they could declare war within next year
that was nice :D
CommanderGolem Don't worry, we, the USA, have been first for the past 60+ years.
They won't. There won't be a war in Korea unless the US starts one, which is a real possibility
Don't you worry, President Trump's on the case, they handed over the hostages and soon their nukes will be without a trace... whose next?
any luck with that?
Can't get enough of him, ... genius in making music and songwriting
the best song ever made
Possibly the best political song I've ever heard
It'd be awesome if they put this song in Fallout 4
War. War never changes.
Rupert Von Braun the war has changed
sneakysnack Or has it?
PaladinPlay Unfortunately, Tom Lehrer wrote his songs after the Fallout alternate history diverges from ours. All of the songs on the Fallout radios are from before that point (1955 I believe). However, one or two of the quests are named after one of his song titles.
Dony Christie Well, that's what Mods are for, eh?
That performance was given in 1967. For 18 years it was Red China (1949) and of course that was the year of the famous six day war with Israel.
This is the best thing I have seen all month! Thanks and much respect!
What a great writer. To do this in his era. Must've been terrifying for some people then. Still rings true today. This is great! In 2016.. I can go back in time, with a wtf moment
1:51 aged like fine wine
Not really. The Israel conflict has been going on since 1947 and the Yom Kippur War was only a couple of years after this was recorded.
Nope
@@joshuawaring4180 It was also recorded only 3 month after the major egyptian defeat of the Six Days War
This man is such a genius whi was so ahead of his time when writing these it feels like these were made now.
I've listened to this comic genius for years, as my dad introduced me his songs. Never seen his face before and realised how beautiful he is 😲
Brains, looks, talent and heart!
Wasn't he a cutie?
Crazy that 59 years later this is extremely revelant
I love the *Here we go again* tone for the little “We better get a bomb”
I just googled that man. Guess, what he is still alive. He is 96 years old.
I had "That was the Year that Was" when I was 9........knew every lyric and crowbarred out of my parents what they meant! Quite a social/history lesson!
Glorious. Thank you. I grew up with Lehrer but didn't know this song.
We are both very lucky and in terrible shape as a civilization that nearly every line of this song is still relevant
1:21 The way he flirtatiously says "Who's next!"
I know , why was he so sexy with it
Who the heck allowed such an amazing comedian and musician to age? Huh??

Tom Lehrer is really a special guy. Just love his lyrics and songs. He just makes an great opinion, and back then it was pretty hard to make such an opinion. Or at least, that is what I've heard.
Great artist, with a great opinion
Tom lehrer walked in 1967 so bo burnham could run in 2013
He still m.i.a?

This sounds so much like more modern satirical musical comedians its scary. When i heard it the first time i thought it was released in the last 5 years
This is on the Tom Lehrer album I bought in the 70's while I was in school. Played that album to death.
AMAZING! Thank you so much for sharing!
This confirms alabama memes date back atleast to 1967, i rest my case.
oh how i wish i got the joke about china when he says "they can't wipe us out for at least five years"

"Israel is getting tense, wants one in self defense"
Self defense you say?
Ask it again when other countries says that they going to nuke your country
Just in case.
it was 1967 and the arabs league just declared war to israel few year before, and was about do attack it again in 1973... so yeah, it was self defence

Great songs! Favorite songwriter
His talent is amazing.
Funny how in all these years the fears are still there, best of wishes in 2024!
This one and 'So Long Mom' have been topping my playlist recently...
a punk cover of this song would go SO HARD
1:10 This made me chuckle given the recent hissy fit from Paris over the subs.
The idea in the 1960s that just the state of Alabama would get their own nuclear bombs made me laugh. That would have been terrifying 50 years ago.
I think it's a reference to George Wallace
The South Africa part cracks me up!
THANK YOU for posting this, complete with intro, and without the irritating insert. I'm confused by the intro because I heard another version of this song in which Lehrer says almost the opposite: "China - which we called 'Red China' - exploded a bomb, which we called 'a device.'"
So Israel's getting tense,
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd" says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb!
Sad to see its still very relevant almost 60 years later.
Tom Lehrer for President.
Better all start listening to this again.
Hours of footage to remind us so many talented and wise people came long before us. And they didn’t have a cell phone, either.

Been a fan for 40 yrs.
For anyone familiar with Eric Weinstein, he invited Tom to dinner for his son's Bar Mitzvah. Imagine being 13 and knowing all about him, and he's there at family dinner to meet YOU.
I love how relevant everything he had to say still is today. It must have taken some balls to get up on stage and sing about this stuff when he was going it.
Outstanding, stupendous, ingenious, BRILLIANT!!
If only Tommy Boy can come back with this fire! 🔥🔥🔥

"Hey, theres this great thing called nuclear power. We can use it to make electricity"
"ok, but hear me out. what if instead of putting our time and energy into making safer power stations, we put our time and energy into making BOMBS!"
You can do both like Israel
This was uploaded on my last birthday with my dad, before he died.
To anyone not knowing who you know who means, it means Israel. You can tell because Israel and Egypt were at each others' throats during that time and Lehrer talks about Israel wanting a bomb in self-defense immediately after the you know who thing.
Andrew Overy Well it’s that and then it’s also the fact that he explicitly names Israel in the lyrics. ”Now Israel’s getting tense, wants one in self-defence...”
Alternatively: Egypt just happens to have a really big problem with Voldemort.
Even without that specific piece of knowledge, Egypt hasn't really had a great relationship with the Jews over the millennia. It's a pretty easy inference.
Well, Egypt has a pest problem with Lord Voldemort
You'd need to be pretty stupid not to put that one together
@laudevecchi, yes, Tom Lehrer is a very funny and witty man, no doubt. His stuff is priceless and timeless :-)
Smart, talented guy! 👍
The dark inclusion of motherhood in the opening lines because dropping the bomb lead to infertility and huge deathrates for affected pregnancies. This song was dark from the very opening
Whos next?

Quoted saying "We'll all go together when we go."
