It is called ektaal because originally, this was counted with one thali (on 1st matra) and one khali (on 7th matra) i.e. 6|6 system with ek taali. Later, it evolved to 4|2|4|2 with taali on 1,5 and 11 and khali on 7. And now, it is counted as 2|2|2|2|2|2 with 4 taalis on 1,5,9,11 and two khalis on 3,7. If you observe, khali on 7 is in all 3 schemes, so the basic nature of this taal is still 6+6 with one taali, hence ek taal. :)
@@amitraohuman Wonderful! Would you be able to provide me any reference for the information particularly about the way it evolved to 4-2-4-2? Never heard about it before and want to learn more.. thank you🙏

@@Sachintyagi003 "आड़ा चौताल" probably means something like crooked choutal...The word "आड़" means something like crooked/twisted as in "आड़ी तेढ़ी"...
@@Sachintyagi003 My opinion about Ada Chautaal: I have commented above about Ektaal theka and it’s folk origins. Ektaal draws its structure from Chautaal which is more defined in academic terms having structure Guru-Guru-Laghu-Laghu. Here, each Guru is 4 matras long and each Laghu is 2 matras long. (1 Taali & 1 Khali together here would constitute 1 Guru, while one Taali standalone would be 1 Laghu). To this, if you append another Laghu of 2 matras at the head, you get 14 matras Ada Chautaal structure (Laghu-Guru-Guru-Laghu-Laghu). In other words, Chautaal structure is contained wholly within the Ada Chautaal. This explains why the word “Chautaal” is present in “Ada Chautaal” name. Now let’s look at Ada Chautaal a bit more. Ada Chautaal has 14 matras in its cycle, an even number. That means naturally it should lend itself to division in two parts as 7+7. Then the 8th matra should begin a new Vibhag but as you can see, the structure interferes. The 8th matra syllable “Taa” does not align with either Taali or Khali - it lies between them! This lack of alignment (or crookedness?) I feel is alluded to with the word “Ada”. An interesting related tidbit is that if you rearrange the letters, you can locate the entire Ektaal Theka contained within it with an addition “Dhin Dhin”. I could be totally wrong on this, but I’ll be eager to correct myself and learn if you can discuss with your teachers and enlighten me with the feedback 🙏

Thank you for the informative videos you made aapne bahut hi Sundar tarike se question ka answer Diya lekin ek Taal ko ek Taal kyon kaha जाता है क्या आप बता सकती हैं
I’ve always had a question, that whenever i listen to a raag sung by someone it sounds a certain way.and whenever sung by another singer,it sounds different.why does it happen?it is fair enough to say that i know nothing about Hindustani Classical music.
My humble opinion: In Taalshastra there are 2 types of Taals: Margi and Deshi. These refer to pathways of application and development of the taal itself. Margi taals are academically robust with well-defined and well-planned Laghu-Guru relationships which in turn translate to well-justified Taali-Khali depictions. This is the Shastra in the Taalshastra. It’s a system. It’s a framework. This is what is Classical means. Teentaal, Chautaal etc fall in this category. Teentaal has 1 Guru 2 Laghus. Chautaal has 2 Guru 2 Laghu. Deshi, on the other hand, refers to Folk music tradition, the music that doesn’t have to act according to a framework. Just what “feels” nice is good enough reason to justify it. No explanations needed. Today’s Hindustani music is a meeting ground of these 2 sides on various aspects & you’ll find a lot more as you dig deeper. The Tabla is a folk instrument existing for many millennia before it was drawn into the classical world. It’s Thekas are not always possible to justify in the Margi way. If you simply recite Ektaal theka enough times, you will realize that it’s got only 2 important points in it : Matra 1 and Matra 7. Matra 1 is Sam (heavy), Matra 7 is Khali (contrasting heavy). That is as if entire theka is only 1 Guru (like most other Folk origin taals like Dadra & Keherva). Shastra says smallest Taal has 1 Laghu, 1 Guru, nothing less. So technically, Ektaal doesn’t meet Shastriya standards. Yet it is so beautiful that can’t be dismissed simply under the pretext of Un-Shastriyataa. This is where the truth dawns that some “taals” are in fact “thekas” and not really taals. We should not confuse a Theka with a Taal. Theka refers to the widely accepted composition you recite that fits into a mathematical structure known as Taal. Ektaal has a beautiful Theka which adopts same Taali Khali as Chautaal - perhaps this was done to lend Margi character to a Deshi Theka to make it academically acceptable. Through the course of history, some things are ad hoc while some are post hoc. This might be one of those instances. Please ask your respective Gurus if this is correct and if you can come back to enlighten me, I would be most grateful 🙏
I’m sorry but I find this whole concept of margi vs deshi very hierarchical and elitist in nature. I do not subscribe to this thought process. I am also against calling ‘raag sangeet’ as classical or shastriya because it reeks of elitism & casteism.
@@AnujaK20 Thank you for the reply. Sadly, we cannot change the past. I have not judged the concepts of Margi vs Deshi for their impact on society. Therefore, even in my comment above, I have limited my thoughts to the technical aspects only. I do see parallels of this Margi-Deshi phenomenon in other areas as well. In linguistics, Sanskrit was developed scientifically. It is well-thought out, is known as Dev-bhasha and has scriptures written in it. Whereas, regional languages are referred to as Apabhramsh (translates to "corruption") although they may be much older than Sanskrit. I see "Margi" as a "Certification" that something conforms to a set of rules or a protocol. It requires in-depth knowledge, experience and an acute intellect to formulate such a system. That which does not conform to the rules is "Deshi" or Uncertified. It does not mean that it does not work or is inferior. It just means something was in place before the system was devised. It is what gives birth to Margi, it is what drives the need for Certification. There may be much less headache in Taalshastra when it comes to Margi vs Deshi, than Raag Sangeet. Tabla players might not have the same issues you encounter in vocal systems for Margi/Deshi. I want to address the elitism though which you mentioned next. The way I think about it is like this: Suppose I own a brand new Honda car but I tinker with the parts and alter something. Now the next time I take it to a dealership for related repair, they will refuse to touch it saying I have violated their terms for repair. The only way they will fix it is if I agree to replace the entire portion I meddled with using original genuine parts (which will cost a huge amount). In other words, they are saying my car is now no longer Margi, but is Deshi. I can always take it to a non-dealership mechanic who will fix it for me for much less cost. Post-repair it is now functional, just not certified. Is learning Sanskrit elitist? Is the dealership elitist? It is food for thought. I feel Classical by definition is elitist because it demands intellectual capacity for analysis and understanding along with a penchant for rigor. Not everyone is meant for it - which is okay. But people are suckers for money, power, position etc. anything that boosts their ego with the "I am better than you" sentiment. True corruption springs in the heart, not the systems devised. Therefore, I feel there is benefit to studying a System separate from how it was used/misused and evolved/devolved over time, for our knowledge. I am hoping to learn from any feedback you or your audience may bring back so I can know the subject better 🙏
