Long-distance is a weird and wonderful adventure between two people who are committed to making it work, no matter how many sleepless nights they must spend apart and what the cynics might say. Open communication is essential because it shows you and your partner are able to talk about anything without fear that you will say something wrong and vice versa. Being apart from each other often cultivates a sense of vulnerability because you often spend so much time away from your partner, so once you are together, you feel more protective and attached to him and the other way around. You cling onto the numerous photos which bring the wonderful memories you’ve created together back to life until the next time you see each other again. The excitement and adrenaline you experience when you have only a few days left before you are back in their arms go well beyond anything you’ve ever felt. You’ve memorized every little detail about your partner so that when you feel their arms around you again, all the quality time you’ve spent apart melts away and you can’t kiss them fast enough. Your kisses with your partner are almost always sweet and romantic at the same time because it feels like you can’t get enough of them. Your partner does little things that are special with you and everything seems to slow down while you are together. Goodbye kisses are inevitable because each and every visit always comes to an end but you know you will be back in their arms before you know it. I wouldn’t trade my wonderful long-distance relationship for an ordinary and mundane relationship.
I was in a long distance relationship for two years - one of those years we were engaged. We're now married, living in the same country and have a sweet 2 month old baby girl! We had to fight hard for this relationship & it was worth every cry, long flight & miles that were between us. I'm from Burbank and he's from Australia but I was living in Uganda for the first few months of our relationship which meant bad wifi and a new time difference to figure out. We've made it & it feel so good. It's funny how much we love coffee dates or dinner in the backyard because even though it's simple, it feels like the most special thing to us.

While it's really difficult, one of the better parts I've experienced is still being able to grow outside of your relationship. The space lets you each grow in different communities in different ways, and then you can reunite and share the wisdom/love/new friends/stories/etc.

These are spot on!! My boyfriend is in the military, and we’ve gone months without seeing each other. Setting expectations from the get go was so important, especially when it came to making time for each other (aka FaceTime dates).
It also took me SO long to come to the realization that it’s more than okay to have fun without each other. I would spend so much time wishing he was with me, that I wouldn’t be “in the moment” when I was with friends.

I’m currently in a relationship of 5 years, I met my bf in 7th grade and we got together in 11th grade and now we’re on our 5th year in the same COLLEGE. We’ve been together for sooo long and next year I’m graduating college and moving to another city (about 2 hours away) to grad school but he’s still has more or less a year left in college after I graduate, so this video is and will come in handy when that time arrives. My boyfriend and I are doing long distance, with about 10-11 hours between us- unfortunately. We are heading into our second year of it now, and although we have summers together, we are expecting at least 2 more years after this school year as well. I have to say it can be challenging at times, but if you have a trusting and strong relationship, it is no issue. FaceTiming every day and all you can do on phones nowadays makes it so easy to stay updated on one another’s day, how they’re feeling, and just about everything as if you were there. In addition to all that- it truly makes the heart grow fonder. There is nothing that compares to finally seeing one another after a long time apart and it just makes that time spent together so much more special! If you’re going into a long distance relationship, you can do it!!!

I had two friends who had girlfriends going to completely different colleges in different parts of the world. One of them decided on staying together and trying long distance. His girlfriend ended up cheating and they broke up somewhere down the line. My other friend who's a little younger wanted to try the same a couple years later and asked me for some advice. I told him about my previous friend's situation that ended badly. I advised him to be very realistic and ask his girlfriend if it would be okay to use this time to take a break and just live life since they were young, and when they're done with college, he'll be waiting for her to resume properly again. She surprisingly agreed, and they both went off to college. The funny thing is, they continued talking to each other as friends and even visited each other during holidays. While they were in college, they went on a couple of dates with others here and there but didn't really see anyone else extensively. When they graduated and came back home, they got back together as if nothing happened and everything was the same. They've just got engaged a couple of months ago and he thanks me all the time for giving him that advice.

When my husband and I were dating, we did long distance for 9 months. It was very unique though - he was on a mission trip and traveled around the world so we didn't see each other at all for those 9 months and only got to call/talk once every couple weeks. I think the longest we went without talking was a month. It was SO hard, but SO worth it. Anyone who does long distance - I know what you're going through! It's so tough, but it will all be worth it.

My boyfriend and I have been together for about a year and a half now and it's been mostly long distance - we're from the same city but go to universities that are a few hours apart so can only be together for longer than a weekend over the summer or winter break. Every point you bring up is so spot on and so relatable. I didnt realize how important it was to schedule talking times, and how CRUCIAL it was to learn to really communicate well through any issue. Long distance can be super tough, but it's worth it for how exciting it always is to reunite 💕

oh my gosh! Thanks so much for sharing! I'm currently in a long distance relationship. I just moved to LA and my boyfriend lives in Hawaii. I can definitely relate to when you said not letting the last day together ruin your last day together. My boyfriend flew back home about a week ago and it was so hard not letting that rule our last day. We had to keep reminding each other to live in the moment and that definitely made a huge impact. I can relate to so much that you said! My boyfriend and I try being supportive of one another and schedule a facetime session about once or twice a week and text/snap videos on a daily.

I am not only inexperienced because I had never dated anyone before, but also, the troubles of being long-distance add to my frustrations. Once you started talking about how hard communication is and how you were also personally feeling a lack of love and attention because of it being long-distance really reassured me because I didn’t realize how linked these issues were to us being physically apart, not just that my bf is not great at texting 😂. 100% agree it's so hard to be in a long distance relationship but so worth it if you both really love each other and are both committed to each other. We were in an LDR from California to London for over 5 and half years, got married in October 2019 and officially closed the distance in January 2020! Stay strong everyone and remember what you're fighting for!!
We’ve been married now for a year but my husband and I went through 3 years of long distance in college as well! His school was in South Dakota and I went to New York. When he went on the plane to go back for the fall he would tell my dog “I’ll see u again when it snows!” I would bawl my eyes out every time he had to leave haha it’s just a part of long distance I think, but that longing really makes the heart grow fonder, I’m SO happy looking back on these days and knowing they’re in the past haha praise God that he always holds our hands through tough times, and how He shapes our lives to better reflect His love and glory 🙌🏼
My husband and I went to high school together, started dating senior year, and then went to different universities. We had 4 years long distance so I can totally relate to this! I agree it absolutely helped to have the next get together planned before leaving each other because otherwise it felt so hopeless like I would never see him again! 😭 Since we were both studying and in the same time zone, at night we would just sit at our desks and do work with a Skype call on so it felt like we were studying together! 😂 Once we finally got to live together, we never took it for granted! It was so hard, but worth it if you know the person is The One 🙂
