- Showing the SN95s some love today I review My friend Edwins 1998 Mustang GT with the 4.6L V8 and I also brought out my crowd surfer 5.0 to do a little comparison test.

Man! the plan is doing the whole pi swap, and a few more boltons and possibly boost it afterwards. Have to see what the budget looks like down the line lol.
Just picked up one of these beauties after totaling my first car ever… it was a very sad experience as I always find myself missing it but i will now take care of this 98 mustang gt for years to come 🖤
The '98 4.6l produces 225hp stock. The most of the three years in the SN95 Mustang. The '99 jumped to 275hp due to the improved P.I. heads. Same block but, better heads. So, you can put '99-'04 P.I.heads on a '96-'98 and get 275hp. Used ones are cheap. New ones are about $900. Still, the cold air intake, larger throttle body, larger fuel injectors, stronger fuel pump and better exhaust flow will get you far if, you're on a budget.

most of the gain from the 99-04 was the intake manifold and cams. The heads are better flowing but aren't worth as much hp.
They are overhead cams on the 4.6l which, to me, are part of the head assembly. So, when I'm talking buying new PI heads, at $900 they had better include the cams. I can't believe I'm actually having to explain this. C'mon man!

they not only upped the HP in the 98, they also made upgrades to the suspension to further stabilize the ride, and feel more sturdy than the 94-97 models
Facts
I love these cars for some reason. I had a 94 5.0 as my first car and sadly totaled it. Now I have a 96 4.6 with a remanufactured motor from Ford and a beefed up t45 transmission from pro-force performance on the way. They aren't that fast from the factory but they are fun and if you slap some shorter gears and a supercharger on them I think they have quite a lot of potential. Plus I just love their appearance!

I love my 98 mustang gt long tube headers h pipe straight pipes bbk 78 mm plenum cold air intake 24 pound injectors and a strategy tune with a Bahma tuner. Makes it the best enjoyable muscle car driven daily. You can get all these mods for under 1000 if you know how to shop. My straight pipes is my daily symphony. Oh yeah and waiting to install my 410 gears. I’m riding 245 17 front. 315 17 NITTOS REAR. T-45 Transmission. Thank you Mr. Random for the inspiration. My first build 96 GT wrecked it then got a 95 GT sold it then I went back to the 98GT these are my favorite cars. VEGAS BABY.
4.6L sounds better at idle. 5.0L sounds better off idle IMO. 4.6L DOHC sounds the best all around. I vote RACE!!!!
I actually think the opposite the 5.0 has a deeper idle but the 4.6 sounds better shifting.. Just my opinion
I had the 5.0 with straight pipes. that was loud. I like the sound of both .
The 96 on up 4.6 cradle, front geometry and steering rack are refined. Bro your my fave keep reviewing..
My 5.0 sounds quite a bit different.
I installed a set of BBK offroad H-pipes, and left the stock mufflers on. It's loud, and has a very defined growl to it.

I've owned a 95, a 96, and now a 98. And you can really feel the difference in handling, take off, and overall smoothness in shifting and ride stability
94 2003 98 for me LOL
I prefer 94 to 98 body style I like all mustangs but the 79to 93 fox body's are everywhere 14 years worth and 99 to 2004 6 years worth these sn95 cars are getting harder to find.and these other guys reviews put them down they are every bit as good as any of those cars it is all about style finally a good review on a one of the best looking cars on the street.

I've had a '94 GT and 2 Lincoln Mark 7 LSC's with 5.0, but I love my '98 GT Conv.

I always thought going from 5.0 to 4.6 was a bad idea by Ford. The old saying "there's no substitute for cubic inches." Obviously the 4.6 has proven to be a very reliable motor but it still seems to produce less power even though they were "rated" higher than the 5.0's they replaced.
My 20 sum thing yr old Son just bought one of these so I had to check out your video. His does need some work tho but sounds like it's easy to get it going.

PLEASE RACE THIS WITH YOUR 5.0 I've been wondering which one is faster. Also I can't believe you didn't mention the door panels ripping off as a huge interior flaw. Its sounds like the 5.0 has a deeper tone on the low revs but the 4.6 has a better tone up higher
Will ill say the 4.6 its faster at least by 3 4 cars i i raced before my 4.6 stock aginst diferents fox body & 94 to 95 5.0 i beat them by the same 3 to 4 ? at high rpm the 4.6 are really good & the motor its a lighter is faster forshure ..
i did 14.8 1/4 mile on my 4.6 !! & stock 5.0 hit 15.3 1/4 mile!
The 4valve 4.6 is the best sounding Ford engine ever. N/A with headers at least. I had a 98V6 mustang with headers and cold air intake. It was faster than my 305 87Camaro.
I have a 98 mustang 4.6 with simple mods. It is black also. My mustang has a new paint. Also when it came out has a 5 star crash rating. If you hit anything head on the engine drops to the ground instead of coming into the cab. Also great on gas. I love this body style period
T45 transmission vs. T5, the clutch, different throttle response, rear gears.
Both have fantastic sounds in their own right. To me the 5.0 has a much cleaner guttural sound to it. However I had a 98 Gt and I just prefer the sound of it, a roar that’s just pure aggression. ❤❤❤ I’d have both if I could.

the rattle could be a header bolt loose. I had that happen right after my flow 40's were installed. Same car.
These old sn95 5 oohs are cool but drive a new Coyote 5.0 and it is a night and day difference so much more refined and way faster stock to stock. But I always say you can't beat the old foxbody they have a timeless look and feel that will never get old.

Ompharus I have a sn95 with the 4.6 and I supercharged it and put some other stuff on it and it pushes out 390 hp

when it comes to cams 5.0 push rods all day because everything is in the middle and 5.0 are low end torque killer

I have the same Mustang as the 4.6 but everything is stock .I want to know what muffler set up you have on the 5.0 it sounds more richer
i think that the motor would make a big difference because the way each engine has its own power band at least comparing from the 4.6 and a 5.0 in the f150s it seems that the 4.6 loves the higher rpms wear the 5.0 seems more like a torque monster down low from my experience with the f150s wouldnt think there would be to much difference. i liked the way the 5.0 sounded maybe thats just me liking the way the only push rod engine sound

HugoVal0 I know u posted this 3 months ago. But yes, if ur looking for a cheap and reliable mustang gt. Get the the n95. I personally prefer the 96-98. My 97gt has nearly 200k miles on it, and never broke on me. Their easy to take care of, sound good, and still feel like a muscle car. Stock on highway I got 315mile averaging 55 to 65mph. Can do a simple pi swap(heads, cams, and intake manifold from a 99-2004 gt) to help with torque and u will be happy. But, the 4.6 does cost more to mod than the 5.o, but the 4.6 motor is tougher than the 5.o and more efficient.
My first car was a $50 96 grand am in 2008, second was a $5500 mustang gt in 2012. Grand am broke down with little things, mustang was bought with a bunch of small addons, here in 2018 header gaskets and an intake manifold keeps my white pwny running after 6 years

when you upgrade the heads on a non pi motor with pi heads you end up creating more compression which makes more power than the actual new edge themselves with the pi heads.
Having dealt with both cars on the SN95 platform, I like the 4.6 because of the ODB2. Easier to tune and mod. I still like the 5.0 engine, but prefer the engine in the Foxbody platform. The 5.0 has to many issues on the SN95 platform.
What are the issues?
Having built a few of these cars I can say I prefer the 4.6 out of the car.
They can be a pain to work on, mainly the heads when there in the car.
The 5.0 is easier and cheaper to build, easier to work on but I blew 2 motors in my lifetime.
I've never had any major issues with the 4.6.
Nitrous cracked a manifold once other then that, just basic stuff.
If the 4.6 pulls harder, you should check the codes on the 5.0 and check your tune.

Ive been looking into getting one of these cars. I've always loved the look of it plus my dad had it a long time ago.
i had the abs light on my MGM it was the wire unplug in the wheel
After 2001 they started putting trash transmissions in too. The t5 and t45 are pretty solid. The next was shit though. Horrible synchro's

Its still hard to believe this was my car 8 months ago,miss that 5.0 sound when driving it though. Nothing beats a 4v cobra sound though,those quad cams burble sound is mesmerizing. Its funny when you the 94 feels like it wants to kill you,lol. My Cobra rides like a caddy compared to the 94,previous owner hooked it up with tokico 5 way adjustable shocks and stuts,lakewood lower control arms,eaibach springs and full length welded subframe connectors. The 94 suspension has seen better days,i never got around to doing any of it. Btw change the upper control arm bushings asap or upgrade to upper controls arms cause they are pretty shot,u can feel it when you turn the steering wheel fast from left to right,its kinda scary

The only difference I can tell is the transmission.power is about the same more torque on the 94 95 smoother transmission on 96 to 98

He's constantly putting his car over the other saying the 5.0 feels this or that way compared to the 4.6. Both are good engines. The 4.6 will beat the 5.0
not all 5.0 1994 mustangs feel,handle or accelerate the same...neither do 4.6 es....so many tweaks could have been done to both cars over the years....

Midairmadness the 5.0 are slower then the 4.6 the 4.6 with a cam can beat a 5.0
It depends on which 4.6 you’re talking about, the 96-98 gt’s are dogs, and even a built PI engine pistons and all that a friend built made like 300, hence why she swapped a cobra into it. But the 5.0’s are way cheaper to work on and easier to make power going NA, my 94 cobra just dyno’d 246 whp and 299 ft/lbs, all I have is a CAI off road X pipe, a catback and 3.73 gears

I had a 1996 with Cai and exhaust and bigger plug wires and that car was wicked fast and I got all kind of coochie with it. Be at store getting gas a ladies trying to get a ride in the Tang. This was 1997 we all cruised and raced I only lost one race and that was a dodge viper he only beat me cause I got nervous and dropped at 5k and spun. I went 68-1 in the old coot. Just remember going 170mph racing a 1995 Ss Camaro with 7 speed manual trans. Sold the Mustang cause all the cooter I got they pop out kids.

Why do all of the sn95's have bad paint in Florida?
1.Because the sun it BRUTAL in Florida.
2. Stock Ford paint sucks (don't flame me I've had Mustangs for years).
3. Even if you clean and wax the hell out of your Mustang, see #2. The paint is going to fail.
ess2586 yeah I have a 97 gt and a 95 gt they bolth have paint chips, but it doesn't matter because I got the 97 gt with 114 thousand miles on it for 400$ from a old man, and the 95 was 1000 needs a new transmission, but I got a very good deal on the 97 iv already had people offer 3500, but I don't want to sell it
I got a 94 cobra that was a Florida car and the paint is embarrassing, the first owner seemed to drive like trash the front and rear bumper is spider cracked to hell among other paint scrapes and chips

4.6 was a nice and smooth, emphasis on smooth engine. Power was there but not with the ferocity that the 5.0 possessed. Reliable as it was also, the 5.0 was better here too. Can’t beat an iron block with iron heads for longevity when beating on an engine. Horsepower numbers don’t tell the real story. 4.6 does not beat 5.0. At least not in SOHC trim.
My 5.0 94 gt engine was complete shit and had a bad cylinder head because they don’t rev high good at all I now own a 97 gt with mods and boy is it way faster than the 5.0 motor

if the 94 all stock no heavy mod like stage 2 cam trick flow beards underdrive pulley and more well yes the 98 should win pretty easy 94 215hp vs 98 225hp I'm pretty sure you can guest that win.. now if it was 86 vs 98 mustang that be something to see

well in this case he just put in the ones from 99-2004 believe it or not you can actually make them fit pretty good..i plan on doing the same to mine

Ok so does every 94-04 have issues with the switch panel popping out of the damn door. I see it doing it in this video and my mustangs do it too and I thought it was warped or something so I bought new ones and it still does it everytime I close the door.
