VFX and CGI are completely two different things. Oppenheimer has zero CGI with minimal usage of VFX.

always thought Computer Generated Imagery as a subset of Visual Effects since it is a visual element. Just like Circle is a special case Ellipse. Didn't fully understand that they are treated totally differently.
1. Why does this film have to be in IMAX?
Since it's a periodical film, This square aspect ratio will take you back to the olden days. (As you mentioned in Iruvar's cinematography) Though it can be done with any camera and projection, IMAX and Nolan seem inseparable.

3. Brammandam is missing in the explosion!
Somehow I agree, But mathematically, they're true to the plot. There is a reference point to see the size of The explosion. Base camp is 16 kilometers away from the explosion spot. They're observing it from that distance. It'll be equal to or less than the height of a 6-foot Man. And it's clearly shown.
4. Physics made clear
As the nuke blasts, you'll see only light. Since it's 16 km away, there will be more than a 20-second delay for the shock wave and sound to reach the observers.
And the climax conversation between Dr.Einstein and Dr. Oppenheimer is one of the best ever that you can experience if you love Physics.
You're lucky if you get a chance to experience this masterpiece in your lifetime.

I totally concur your view! Why this film has to be in IMAX, it was mostly indoorsy. But maybe I feel that the image quality we got from the conversion of film reel to digital was so good especially those 15 perf 65mm B/W kodak scenes as you said. I've seen some B/W movies of the recent past like Blond, Roma, The Artist but this B/W was far superior, I saw the movie in a bad, dusty/dirty, small 4k screen nearby by place and I have never seen such clarity in that screen before. BTW Great analysis video bro, waiting for you to share the 15 Perf 70mm experience soon, pray that you get a great seat very soon.

Agree with ur honest opinion.I'm very big fan of CN and his movies especially Dark knight rises - Joker scene - Hospital blast scene,Batman chasing scene,Joker introgation scene,hotel scene etc. But Oppenheimer la onnu kooda apdi illa. IMAX 70MM (15 Perf) theatre is not in India, hardly 30 such auditorium is available around the world.
I got an opportunity to watch it in 70mm IMAX, but observed the scenes were switching between 15-perf and 5-perf. the entire movie wasnt 15-perf and didnt fill up the entire screen, not sure if thats how they filmed it

Yes, per the movie site technical specifications the movie was actually shot in two aspect ratios 5-perf 65mm and 15-perf IMAX film. Since the film transfer was in full native resolution the true 70mm IMAX projection will switch between two ratios 1.43:1 and 2.20:1 throughout the film. I experienced the same watching at Dallas IMAX 70mm yesterday.

Edited like the olden days. They make a small size film print and edit the scans in AVID or similar nonlinear editors and transfer the time code to film and cut the film accordingly. Per Nolan this film is all analog with very minimal DI.
