This Shabbat is Parshat Shmini, the eighth day, the greatest day of the inauguration of the tabernacle of God’s divine presence descending down and dwelling amongst the Jewish people.
Yet this day was stained with the terrible tragedy and that was the tragedy of the death of Nadav and Abihu. It’s no coincidence, that Simchat Torah, the eighth day of Succot was the day when the war broke out.
And also that great day of joy and oneness was stained with the terrible war and death toll.
There’s a little disagreement in the parsha that takes place between Moshe Rabeinu and his brother Aharon.
After Aharon’s two sons Nadav and Abihu had died, his argument was how to deal with the sacrifices that had to be brought.
And Moshe says go on with the festivities because it's such a special day. Eat all the sacrifices. And Aharon burned some of those sacrifices.
At the end Aharon explains his logic. Moshe comes in upset annoyed by Aharon not listening and Aharon explains why he did what he did and why he burnt some of the sacrifices.
    The passuk says וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע משֶׁ֔ה וַיִּיטַ֖ב בְּעֵינָֽיו
Moses was happy when he heard Aharon’s logic. He admitted and was not ashamed. This is the true sign of a leader. It's not about being right but sometimes it's about getting to the truth and getting to what the ideal way of serving God is.
And today, Moshe Rabeinu teaches us that sometimes it's not enough to say to someone else, “you're right.”
Moshe went around to the camp and told everyone I misunderstood God's will. I misunderstood the halacha. I should be able not to be ashamed to say we made a mistake. This is the true great quality of Moshe Rabeinu.
Shabbat Shalom, my friends. We should be privileged on Rosh Hodesh Nisan. The month of Geula. The month of redemption. Like God redeemed us back then, He should redeem us today. Amen and amen.
