really true! fanfiction is a great low-risk way of getting into writing and storytelling. also, nothing is better than the feeling of finding other people that love the same super niche ship that previously you'd only thought you liked...
One time I made a fan fic of HL2 for school project, I wasn't anything like "Oooo, Gordon Freeman x Alyx Vance" It was taking place in an entirely different area in the HL2 universe with some lore addons, new characters, and references towards previous Half-Life games. I could post it here, but its kind of long, but just let me know if you want me too.
OMG yeah go for it! i'd love to read it! that's sounds interesting!(i've played through black mesa, and half life 2, and entropy zero 2, those games are great)
The Water Workers A Half-Life 2 based story Introduction: It has been one year after the fall of the Citadel in City-17 along with the Suppression Field, allowing humanity to repopulate, but the Combine still remains and are creating Biologically made soldiers and clones to help them still gain control on earth. Gordon Freeman’s whereabouts are currently unknown to everyone else but another story is slowly unraveling with a simple civilian living on an island off the coast of The Gulf of Mexico on City-33… Chapter one: Caleb Milton Caleb wakes up to the sounds of vehicles and Metro Cops moving outside with the radio chatter mixed within. They get up and walk downstairs in the rather empty living room with the only light illuminating the room coming from outside through the dirty or broken glass windows. They walk outside to see two people standing near the road looking at one of the saved Breencasts playing on a monitor. “Why do they keep playing Breencasts over and over again?” A civilian said while cradling a baby “Didn't he die over a year ago?” The two turned towards Caleb “Oh hey Caleb, woke up from the marching too huh?” One of the civilians said “Yeah, why are they even marching anyways?” just before Caleb could get an answer, he noticed the baby in the woman’s arms “Oh! Who's this little pumpkin?” Caleb pointed out the baby “I haven’t thought of a name for her yet.” The woman looked down at the baby for a moment before turning back to Caleb. “You should go to work, I heard the Combine is giving out ration bonuses for the first few workers who come in early.” “Really? Guess I’ll be off then.” Caleb hopped on his bike and began to make his way towards the cannery. Caleb stopped on the way before turning towards some commotion down the road. He spotted a group of Metro Cops raiding a building with an announcement playing in the background being followed by muffled screams from the innocent civilians inside. Caleb went back to pedaling towards the cannery for his job, soon entered the cannery and got in line for another day of work. “:So I’m guessing you came here for the extra Ration bonus huh?” a much older person said next to him “Yeah, I don’t have much to do at the moment Harry.” “Hm…” Harry began to look around the room before going back to work. An hour passes as the sounds of vehicles and radio chatter was heard outside, shortly followed by Overwatch announcements.. Chapter Two: Attention All Ground Units… An announcement went off as Combine soldiers began to storm the cannery "Attention, ground units - multiple anti-citizens have been reported in this building. Code: lock, cauterize, stabilize." All of the workers inside began to panic “EVERYBODY RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!” “What do they want from us?!” Through the panic another announcement went off "Attention, ground units - multiple anti-citizens have been reported in this sector. Code: lock, cauterize, stabilize." Caleb looks around for a way out of the cannery before noticing an open window near the ceiling but it was too high up. Harry runs towards Caleb, before getting on his knees to boost him up “Climb! You're worth more to me!” Caleb climbs up with the help of Harry and reaches down for him “Leave me! I’m just deadweight for you, I can barely move!” Caleb turns towards the window and begins to run towards it before climbing to the top of a shelf near the open window before he waved goodbye to Harry for his help only to see him getting taken away by some Combine soldiers. Caleb drops down from the window before falling into the back of a truck filled with gutted fish. Chapter Three: The Rebels The car comes to life as it begins to move towards the road, crashing through anything in its way. The truck suddenly takes a right turn into an old train tunnel after crashing through a fence. It slows down as it stops in front of a caved in section of the tunnel before two people step out of the car. “This is the Tunnel Rats coming from the TR base. The Cannery Crooks have been compromised, we just escaped after smuggling in one of the devices. Combine must’ve put a tracker on it.” One of the people said while standing next to the truck before Caleb peaks out from the pile of fish “Uh, what's going on?” one of the people turned, pointing a pistol at them “WHAT THE- Garry! There's someone on the truck!” Garry turns towards Caleb on the truck “Aw great, take him in for questioning!” Caleb drops down, willingly listening to them. Caleb is brought inside of one of the old maintenance rooms of the tunnel before being brought inside of a fenced off area of the room “Now listen here, you better tell us what you're doing here or I’m going to shoot that pipe behind you and get you covered in acid…” “There's acid in that pipe?” “Just shut up Hector! This is the first time I’m interrogating someone!” Garry said in anger “I just wanted to get out of there before I get caught by the Combine!” Caleb was panicking, he didn’t know what these people wanted from him “Well we can't just let you leave after finding our base…” “We could let him join us.” Hector brought up “Sure, I’m up for using him as Antlion bait!” “No! Not that, I was thinking of a spy of sorts.” “Oh, or that…” Garry sounded a bit disappointed “I’m uh, up for that…” “Very well then, I’ll tell them that you decided to join us.” Chapter Four: The mission A week goes by after Caleb joined The Tunnel Rats as their spy, he has now been tasked with an important mission… Caleb returns to the old train tunnel before knocking on the door, “What's the password?” “123Password” The door opens as Caleb walks inside and goes to sit down in the meeting room. A few minutes pass by before Garry and Hector walk inside and sit down. “Alright Caleb, we got a mission for you, There's a combine APC transporting a really important inside, and we need your help while getting it.” “The APC will “Accidently” crash around here, and we need you to go and swoop in to get the object, you might also find a gun inside, goodluck” Caleb gets up and makes his way towards the block where the APC was going to crash. A few hours pass before the vehicle is driving by, suddenly, an explosion knocks the car over, crashing it into one of the buildings, and one of the doors falls off as Caleb was running towards it. Caleb searches around the old vehicle before pulling out an odd glowing object. A flash goes off as a Scanner takes a photo of him. “Get away!” Caleb reaches inside of the wreckage before pulling out a pistol and shooting the Scanner, the Scanner crashes as Caleb makes a run back to the tunnel. Multiple Metro Cops began to make their way towards the crash site before seeing Caleb running away. One of the radios on the cops went off “Suspect spotted fleeing from the scene, opening fire!” Gunshots were heard behind Caleb as bullets whizzed by, Caleb quickly ran into an alleyway before hiding behind a dumpster as the cops passed by Caleb. A few minutes passed before Caleb climbed out from behind the dumpster and began to make his way back. Chapter Five: The Key Caleb returns to the tunnel with the odd object and sets it down “Oh my god… It’s The Key” Garry was in awe while staring at the object “Milton, do you realize what you have just found?!” Hector looked to be freaking out from the discovery “No…?” Caleb was confused about the object “This is the key to The Pump! If we break inside and rig it to uh, let's say take water from wherever it’s putting the water back to here, we could probably save Earth!” “C’mon Caleb, we gotta show this to Tom!” “Who’s uh, Tom?” Garry drags Caleb towards one of the lockers and starts to slide it to the side. “TOM! Look what we found!” Garry holds up The Key. Tom grabs a pair of crutches and hobbles towards it “Yeah?” “We got The Key!” Tom takes the object and begins to inspect it “No, not The Key, just the key to the gate of The Pump…” Tom carries it towards a computer before placing it in a socket and starts to type in the computer “What's he doing?” “He's making copies of the code, and trying to override it’s system or something.” Garry tried to explain “Yeah- Uh oh.” “What is it Tom?” Tom hobbles away while mumbling something “You fat cat.. Why do you have to be so big and fat?...” “What's the mumbling abou-” Caleb was cut off “Combine found us! Get everyone to the evacuation tunnel! I’ll deal with Tom!” Hector escorted some people towards the tunnel “Go barricade the door Milton!” Caleb nodded before dragging a shelf towards the door, he began to pile up some boxes and crates before running after the group evacuating. Caleb reaches the station where the evacuation train was before going inside. “Head count! There should be at least Twenty-Two people here!” People began counting before coming up with an answer “We got Twenty-One people here!” one of the people said “No, there's Twenty-Two here…” “I’m not counting Tom, Only humans matter!” “Oh, so Vortigaunts don't count even though they help us?” the two continued to squabble before being interrupted by Garry “Enough! We just escaped from the Combine and you all choose to squabble amongst each other over differences?! You might as well go back to being ruled by the Combine at this point!” The train stops as the doors begin to open to another station… To Be Continued…

Yes you should. Just don't try to publish it. I have written fanfiction and thoroughly enjoyed doing it. I've also written my own original stories. Do that as well if you want to be a writer.
