INSCRYPTION and Player Expectations

- INSCRYPTION is a game that's difficult to approach in more ways that one, but the prime reason, in my view has everything to do with the concept of "spoiler culture". To explore this, I've opted to make a two-part video series, with the first being a spoiler-free introduction to the game (and hoping to get more people into it), and the latter being an exploration of a spoiler-heavy side of the game.

Personally I disagree with your take on the atmosphere but the rest of the video is solid.
The hairsplitting between "roguelike" and "roguelite" has motivated me to just use "roguish" for everything. Plus it's more fun to say
p.s. goddammit, you got me
oh, i like that. i personally find utility in the distinction but "roguish" is great
thats a pretty clever solution
Just call them all roguelites lol. There are preciously few roguelikes released today.
@@Eval999 respectfully disagree, but then that's why I say "roguish". removes all confusion and we don't even need to have this discussion lol
"Wow! Great video." -Luke Carder
I normally just listen to this style of videos in the background, but when you mentioned the atmosphere i was hooked. Great video!! 👌
Definitely has a sitdown by the fire and stay awhile vibe.
This was really interesting! One thought (spoilers ahead):

Adding the chapter markers was a masterful touch lmao. Cant wait for the real vid (i have already played inscryption i promise)
While I think there is something magic about experiencing a piece of art blind, especially something like Inscryption, I think that we shouldn't be too precious about it as most people aren't willing to go into a work completely blind, so we have to be willing to give some details away to get more people to experience the thing.
Not to mention how much there is to be gained from experiencing media while aware of your own expectations, spoilers don't spoil anything if you're able to critically engage with a piece of media during consumption. I knew about a lot of Inscryption before playing it and it still feels fantastic to go through with the knowledge of what will happen. Good media can't be spoiled.
if you dont want to experience something without knowing it you have no soul
@@etasjo games cost money, so there's definitely a reason to atleast know a little bit before investing.
I agree, it's hard to say "go play this game, but I won't tell you anything about it!" That said, when I've recommended Inscryption, I'll usually just say it's a rougelike deckbuilder with a creepy vibe, and I highly recommend it. I think there are a good amount of talking points for the game without spoiling anything.
Yeah I went into inscription partially aware of act 2 and 3.
And I was still immensely surprised and delve into every new content.
I want to really congratulate the amount of effort that went into setting up this video. You made not one but two community posts creating an entirely believable fiction, which made it so that I fell hook line and sinker for the joke. Everything in the first half of this video felt delightfully mocking, just dancing around the ideas of expectation and subversion, and I just sat there the whole time like "okay but the video's gonna start any minute now, they're just kinda like this in their videos and it's a big part of what I love about their content, how willing they are to lay out all the groundwork and the thought process behind the presentational style." Even after the "jump scare," I scrolled down to see "intro" and thought "okay, this is just an extra-cautious spoiler warning before the video begins in the next chapter."
Fucking got me.
I have about a dozen april fools day vids in my feed today and then there's just... this. Solid vid
Love your content man, got so excited to see a new video so early!
The rudest part about this video is now I have to wait a month for something I didn't previously know I wanted.
This is one of my favorite games ever and I love your take on it. This video fills me with joy.
i came back to this video wondering why it has so few views but autoplay put me in the atmosphere section and reminded me why
Ironically I put this video on while I edited a video for my side channel because I didn’t want to damage my main with poor viewer retention. This was brave of you despite Leshy’s great sense of ambiance.
See you in a few months I hate this date!
You can't remind me of Inscription now, I'm in the middle of Baldur's Gate 3!
you monster
Very good dedication to the bit. I respect that.
this reminds me of the point tim rogers makes about how everything, even posters, the names of a work, *everything* is a spoiler. all metatext.
I've already played inscryption so i just stuck around to enjoy the ambience. this game's soundtrack rules
It seems I was not the only one amazed by how good inscription is. And just how much you can learn about it.
There’s a hidden code to link to an unlisted UA-cam video, right?
Thank you
I want you to know I am playing this through to the end
Im so excited
Yknow what? I trust your tastes and insight. I'm gonna play Inscryption and then watch this video.
I think Inscryption is a solid okay game. I think the "twists" are not terribly revolutionary or subversive in a shocking way. That said many of the core mechanics of the card game are actually really fun but certain elements of repetition hurt it a bit for me.
so, thats how it is. i guess i have to finally get around to playing it then.
I'm excited
I like Inscryption, cant wait for the next video
i hope the timestamps for the end of this video and the actual video are the same
daniel mullins should be forced to make short games
You should make a video on disco Elysium, i am very interested in what you would have to say about it. Also love your videos. Edit: somehow didn't realize it was an april fools video, very clever.
I don't know what I was expecting.
Wow, Rosencreutz actually put out a 5 minute video for once! Weird, put suprisingly deep too, especially considering the short amount of time.
Outer Wilds is another great game that works best if you know nothing about it.
PLAY IT NOW!
@@calebr7199maybe later
You're right, the real Insryption was the friends we made along the way
you got me
YES SIR I SHALL PLAY INSCRIPTION
I went and played it, good game
this is why i have trust issues
Forgot what day it was
is devolver really that associated with games like inscryption? or is it just that the games i associate with devolver are... abnormal for the publisher? (Loop Hero/Terra Nil, which are chill vibe games for me)
Inscryption is actually the game that made us start speedrunning
fine, I'll play it. had it for months, just can't be fucked playing new games lately lol
Dont release it till it goes on steam sale!!!
I sent GoG an email being like "hey you wanna put on a sale" in the way Mandalore Gaming often gets one to coincide, but I'm small and it was an unlikely request, so it didn't happen, but, oh well.
its funny because i started playing it yesterday
inscryption probably da best game
Personally I wasn’t a huge fan of how subtitle heavy this video was. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate how they can expand the accessibility of a video, but when I’m listening to these at work and not watching the screen consistently it definitely made me feel like I missed a lot of content that was relatively important.
do you know Flaw Peacock?
god damnit
10/10 analysis.
The game, though? 7/10, too much water.
i like swimiming
Ah yes the two plot point genders: trucks and small things that arent trucks.
Ever get the feeling you're being WATCHED?
smilecat
I had a friend who wouldn't stop telling people to play this, and now I feel obligated
I'm 1.5h late... But I was watching Dune for the first time, so it's ok ;-)
Honestly there were some hot takes and I kinda disagree with the atmosphere takes you had. But I dont want to spoil the video for others.
no
No-spoiler culture has gone too far. Exhibit A: that show about games and thrones, forgot the name, it would have been the peak of the golden age of TV if only the showrunners didn't decide that the ending must be a surprise to the audience at all costs. Making a story interesting even when you know exactly what's going to happen is possible, just very difficult. There are a few exceptions, like your classic fair-play whodunnit, but outside of that...
I am not a fan of how much Inscryption fans hype up the no spoilers part. All it did was make me extremely disappointed with how things ended up. I could have saved some money if I actually knew what type of game I was buying.
hey mr gay voice
Hey man I was really disappointed by this video. I was hoping for some kind of April fool's prank where like 5 minutes into the video there's a twist that completely changes the whole thing. Instead it's just a normal video essay the whole way through. Unbelievable. Unsubbed and reported.
Im so disappointed in you 😤😤😤😤😤😤
I have 0 interest in a rogue like card game so………
aye
Akschuallly for me Inscryption was a big disappointment, because I wanted a sincere and genuine game like the bait part of this game. The "twist" for me was that this isn't actually a game I like, and its a game I hate instead.
Judging from the setup here, I am speculating you had the opposite experience.
as someone who loves inscryption, i also did not like the later parts of the game. the good thing is once u beat it u get an endless replayable version of the beginning of the game
